I’m so glad you’re doing so good I have been followed your podcasts for a while, I a 23 years old daughter who has been diagnosed with so many disorders, the last one is schizoaffective disorder, so much medication has almost killed her, i don’t have support from clinicians around me, but have learned a lot from Palmer doctor and another guests you have had in your You Tube Chanel, God bless you.
Enjoyed Dr. Ede's book. This discussion helped a great deal because my schizoeffective wife chooses not to read, but she will watch these videos with me. It's a work in process to get her to try these changes in her diet, but I believe I have already seen significant improvements in her just by giving up processed foods, to include sugar, bread, oatmeal, pasta, and rice. Her blood sugar continues to be above 140, so I'm encouraging Fasting, but she's not there yet. She still believes she's possessed by a demon. Thanks again to you both for this discussion. I'm convinced if she can ever get into ketosis her life will be significantly improved.
We're in a similar situation... My daughter has a diagnosis of Schizoaffective and I have been trying to encourage her to try a low carb diet and eventually try keto for several months now, but she is very resistant to it all. My husband and I have adopted a keto lifestyle for several months now in the hope that it would encourage her. We are both enjoying the keto lifestyle and we have both lost significant weight. We feel great! We only have keto friendly food available at home and we cook keto friendly meals for our daughter at home. However when she goes out of the house she buys her own food and often chooses high carb and sugary foods (which her meds cause her to crave), so we have a long way to go yet. It's a huge challenge to encourage her to make these changes when her voices tell her not to eat the keto friendly meals we cook for her. It would be great if there was more support, discussion and guidance on this issue, as she's not going to get any support on this from her mental health team, or from the NHS here in the UK for many years yet - until more scientific trials are done on keto and it becomes accepted as a possible intervention in the medical community for severe mental health conditions. This could take 20 years or more and that would be too late for her and many others. So for now we keep trying to do our best to encourage her, but it's really tough going and disheartening to know there's a possible cure out there for her but she won't try it 😢 Seeing Lauren thriving since she has been following a keto lifestyle is incredibly inspiring. I just know my daughter would be likely to benefit if she could do this, but having the condition of Schizoaffective itself and the lack of insight it causes, prevents her from following a path that would be most likely to help her. It's kind of soul destroying in any ways but I hope one day we can cajole, encourage and convince her to give it a try. Any suggestions from others in this situation would be most welcome!
@@deirdredaly954 I totally agree. I'm encouraging her doctors to read Dr. Ede and Dr. Palmer's books, but I can tell by most of their reactions that until it reaches their formal training there will be little support.
You could try something like berberine and allulose now to help get the blood sugar down, and gradually increase the ketogenic foods in the diet to start getting the metabolism under control. Good on your for pushing for healthy changes!
I haven't finished listening yet. Around 2.5 years ago I went whole food plant based with no gluten for about 6 months (maybe a bit longer) to try to help with chronic medical conditions. As a result I saw great results with my medical symptoms and it also reset my body to be able to lose weight after some medication had caused weight gain. Not only that it also turned on my cue that tells my body that it is full. Preciously I didn't know I was full until I felt it in my stomach which was extremely distressing due to a mental health diagnosis I had previously dealt with. Moving forward after a stay in a mental health hospital different situations led to me not continuing the plant based gluten free diet. Knowing that helped my medical issues yet I did not see as great as an impact with mental health as of that time as you have there's such a complicated part there where my medical issues need the whole food plant based gluten free diet. But it is true about the great amount of carbs. Maybe I needed to stick with it longer however we can't always determine what takes place in our life interfering with so much. Sigh
Please consider interviewing Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride author of "Gut and Psychology Syndrome ". She is really one of the unsung pioneers of this work. I adore her.
GAPS was awesome for me, but she has some out there and seriously untested ideas. It's a real bummer because I think it has a lot of potential, but it's really hard to take someone seriously who doesn't care about the science (outside of their own "work") or involving anyone in their process/furthering research.
Dr Edes patients are so lucky to have her. Having a clinician to help you troubleshoot when transitioning onto Keto would have made the whole process so much easier I think 🤔. Anyway I'm committed to a Ketogenic diet for the long-term. My body/brain is telling me to stick with it ❤xx
Lauren, one of things I have appreciated about your approach to sharing your keto journey is that you have been very upfront about what science currently exists (and does not yet exist) surrounding the benefits of the keto diet. We've seen how it has worked for you and some of your guests and I think that's wonderful. However, I'm confused by Dr. Ede's basis for recommending paleo as "a starting point for everyone". She claims it's more "natural" because it "predates agriculture" but as others in the comment section have pointed out, the diets of non-agricultural traditional tribes vary greatly and do not all fall under keto. She also claims that the foods from the paleo diet "make more biological sense looking at our brains." So she's just making a leap in logic due to how she believes certain foods "should" affect our bodies? And that's the basis for recommending paleo over something like the Mediterranean diet which actually has three high-quality controlled studies? If there is good quality science to support her claims I feel like she didn't do a very good job at highlighting it.
Appearently you haven’t read her book. She explains in detail why and how paleo/keto/carnivore diets work and she goes into the details of every nutrient, plant toxins and anti-nutrients. The research and references in her book is solid, but of course she can’t explain all in 30mins interview.
Watching your videos lately about your diet has made me seriously question mine. I have PCOS which causes me a lot of hormonal anxiety and on and off insomnia. I know for a fact I feel worse when I eat too many carbs, either in one sitting or just too much in general over a duration of time. But, I have never really done anything about it, cuz well I love carbs. Lol. Trying to cut back now and I have more energy and feel way less anxious and I am sleeping better.
I'm glad this is pretty close to what I'm trying now, focusing on fruit and nuts, some meat, etc. I'm trying to cut out fast food entirely, but it can be difficult
My public library has a copy of the book and I requested it to read. I have mental illness and am neurodiverse, and would like to implement some of these techniques. Thank you so much for doing this interview!
I appreciate this interview - I checked out Georgia's book awhile ago and this was a great refresh with some great questions answered well. I wonder if people without diagnosed insulin resistance/slow glucose processing and/or no such symtpoms get helped with these diets like keto and why.
I don’t aim to go into or out of ketosis. I listen to what my body tells me and it tells me to eat meat and vegetables. When I eat meat and vegetables my mind is very sound.
For the non-agricultural, traditional tribes that still exist only some of them eat a ketogenic diet. Not all pre-agricultural people eat the same things and the amount of carbohydrates in their diet varies from tribe to tribe.

As I have been researching I have noticed while yes the ADHD medication I’m on works well to manage my symptoms for a time it’s only 6 months to a year and then we have to increase the dose. I am researching some of her work heavily to see the connection to treating ADHD when you approach it from a biology standpoint
Again, what does the longitudinal research say? Yes, a sound diet really helps...for how long? Is diet really just the start of a more complicated recovery? I believe so. What is really known?
If you don't try, you'll never know! Waiting 20 or more years for having studies done....may be too late for many people. So just give it a try and see if it works for you. It's just food nothing to be scared about
There is zero financial benefit for companies to fund such a research. Government organisations and university nutrition science departments are full of plant based bureaucrats or researchers whose interests also don’t coincide with this type of research. There won’t be a research unless it’s funded by a non-government, non-profit organization. Luckily a billionaire family’s son had incurable bipolar disorder which was totally cured by ketogenic diet and they decided to fund these research and we started seeing real clinical trials. Unfortunately the world works like this, but now there is hope.
I think it's not just a brain healthy diet but body type too. I dont know why but since i did a restrictive diet and lost more six or eight kg from my previous and usual weight which i thought was my normal weight (1,73 cm, 69kg ~ and being a relatively young male, 36 years old), i had no "flu event" this year and counting, first time in a very long time. Just some cold. But i also have had some intestinal issues maybe a process of body adaptation to the new situation?? Also triggered by some food extravancies 😅😅
Psychiatric medicine just damages your brain and gives you much more illnesses that you didn’t have before and it’s obvious they didn’t help her til she started changing her diet. Psychiatry is a joke all their meds are toxic to our brains listen to Peter Brigens I believe that’s his name he has a lot to say regarding these meds
Listened to 6 odd minutes so far and it is depressing to hear a Dr recommend the consumption of non human animals and their products. Compassion for humans suffering from metabolic brain dysfunction is admirable. But once you Know about the vile suffering of other sentient beings who are slaughtered for food - it is impossible to compartmentalise empathy for humans and concurrently ignore that the human animal does not have a monopoly over feeling pain, fear, grief and bonding with loved ones. Dr Ede cited the dichotomy between "mental" and "physical" health yet this undermines her essential claim that diet is a treatment for brain dysfunction.
We have so far to go. So many doctors and scientists continue to support and participate in the barbaric torture of captive animals in the name of "science." And the animal agriculture industry has a vested interest in hiding their abuses against humans and non-humans from consumers, most of whom prefer to remain ignorant. I was glad to see Lauren collaborating with Hannah Warren, who was vegan before using the keto diet to treat her bipolar disorder and did vegan keto for some time before incorporating eggs, so she is (at least) still vegetarian. I hope people who care about our fellow animals will make it a point to find ways to balance their health and morals.
I agree, I’m trying to get off medication (safely of course) and I used to be vegetarian bc I love animals. I’d rather be vegetarian, so I have to figure this out!! I gained over 100 lbs on the medication and used to weigh 95 lbs at 4’11”. I might try vegetables fruits nuts and maybe fish and eggs and be pescatarian
If we didn’t slaughter animals since 1 million years you wouldn’t be able to have a brain size that enables you to type via a keyboard. All organisms live and die, that’s part of the life. Killing an animal for food sounds like an inhumane thing but literally that is what humans are evolved to do and survived because they’re very good at it. When there is life, there will be death. If you don’t kill a cow in the wild do you believe they retire comfortably and die in his deathbed with grandchildren peacefully? That animal would be slaughtered by another carnivore before it reaches old age. This ideology is literally against human nature. If you’re saying animals should not be caged, they shouldn’t be tortured etc I agree 100% and there are ranches who obey by those rules. So all of us should vote with our money what to buy and ask how that meat is produced. However if you’re saying we shouldn’t eat meat because ethical reasons, that ethics is against human evolution and existence. The consequences are appearent in declining health of humans across the world. Particularly among vegans with them being much more prone to psychological disorders.
Theres no way around it...the brain needs animal fats...grow up...everything dies in order to live...you have magical thinking going on...grow up peter pan
I miss the old channel . This is just a keto obsession and commercial for keto which I fear will only be a temporary “cure”. Kind of like a former anorexic who now obsessively eats “vegan” or “clean”. Not interested in this new craze . Best of luck to you .
I had a feeling this video would be another promotion of keto and carnivore, and it was. It is absolutely fine to enjoy your dietairy pattern and benefit from it, but the confirmation bias here is quite strong. Plenty of anecdotal examples of people who felt worse on a keto diet and the rebranding of it as a necessary 'metabolic' diet who will heal all your ailments, compared to other more balanced diets, seems dishonest to me. Georgia Ede simply don't have the evidence to support most of her claims here.
If you're not fan high fat diets you should look into medical medium. I've been slowly following him and been reducing symptoms, Joshua Alexander (he had schizoaffective disorder) has actually healed through using his methods.
She isn’t claiming that keto will fix all your ailments, just that it helps heal certain mental conditions. She is also clear that it isn’t for everyone. If it isn’t for you that’s fine but that doesn’t mean it’s dishonest to educate people about the benefits. I used to think keto was a bunch of nonsense but i gave it a a try because of this channel and my bipolar symptoms are almost non existent. That’s just my anecdotal evidence but I’ve only heard positive reports from people trying it for mental health, not once have i seen anyone saying it made their mental health worse.
I commented something similar. I'm actually in the camp of people who have enjoyed Lauren's keto journey, but I think we need to be honest about the science. I too found it odd that Dr. Ede didn't seem to offer much scientific support for her claims (heck, the "high quality controlled studies" she mentioned were for the Mediterranean diet, which she says she recommends against!).
@@atsiong100 did she really knock the Mediterranean diet ? I’m desperate to try keto eve tho my dr said it’s not a healthy diet and can destroy Kaiden’s liver heart .. don’t know who to believe anymore
Sorry but no, it’s not. Vegan diet is nutritionally deficient for human brain. You may argue that it isn’t, but eventually your body and brain will disagree with you.

I’m curious to find the negative reviews of this diet .. can you direct me to this information thank you
I commented something similar.
Be kind vegan Diet good for brain and heart
Sorry but no, it’s not. Vegan diet is nutritionally deficient for human brain.
You may argue that it isn’t, but eventually your body and brain will disagree with you.
Vegan
try smoking cigarettes
Smoking improves Schizophrenia symptoms in the short run but harms you in the long run. In the long run it can not 4:45 only damage your lungs and heart but there is even some evidence that it can make schizophrenia worse.
Medication won't work so well if you smoke

Earth is 6000 years old!
We dont know how old the earth is.
That is a religious belief.
So close, about 4,6 billions years as I remember from high school.
How do you know?
Sure you can tell that story and add the fact that the earth is flat too…
They both make great stories 😂
omega 3 fish oil supplementation is vital, infact its being researched for medical treatment of prodromal phase schizophrenia or the negative effects of schizoaffective disorder in general
So then us with fish oil allergies?? What about omega from plant base?
@@ronnie-lynn i should have specified omega 3 fatty acid* not fish oil specifically, so yes plant base will work fine!
yes I read a while ago that omega 3 suppelements help with the prevention of psychosis. However mind you that this probably help for people who are / were not ill yet.
I use fish oil, and walnuts and still got in psychosis
@@jeanpaultongeren125 yeah i used fish oil too and also still got psychosis, i just think its a good idea to recommend it anyways since it can reduce cognitive/negative symptoms in some people who already converted to psychosis before and its good for brain health in general
Thanks!
