4960 is kickin ass. Love to hear throttle up. Wes I really think you love the ole girl a lot. Hence the reason you fixed her,,,,, but every video you have made driving/working her,, you have this big ole smile on your face, like kid in a candy store. As you should. Take care and thanks again.
Great to see you out in the fields. Hey, I'm a custom woodworker - my life is mostly spent in my 6,800 sq ft shop - building just about anything you can think of made of wood. So, people condense my life to "just a guy who builds wooden boxes". Yea, right. So - a farmer is "just a guy who works the dirt in fields". Yea, right. You've shown us a lot of what is really involved - and growing up in Jersey I thought I always knew just what farming is about, but you've opened up a new world to me. I'll admit I'm one of those guys who ran through many a field on my motocross and enduro bikes back in the 60's, 70's and 80's, if I had to do it again I sure wouldn't now. Just dumb riding, never thought about what those fields were really about. Again - thanks for sharing and letting us "non-farmers" get a first hand look at what I feel is an amazing industry. By the way, my favorite color is blue and I like when giving you a thumbs up I get that blue "liked" message! :-)
Nice to see the 4960 running again. If you want some fairly cheap ballast, do the old washer fluid in the tire trick. Heck of a lot cheaper than getting calcium put in, plus won't eat away at the rims either.
Hi just a couple comments on washer fluid ballasting. You guys do realize that washer fluid is lighter per gallon than properly mixed calcium, so you don't get full weight benefit for your money. plus how much washer fluid you would need to ballast Those front tires correctly on the 4690. Yes 6 cans in a lawn tractors great but on this you would probably need 70 gallons plus at a guess to do both tires! I suggest you watch Billstmaxx channel when he did the fronts on his 110 JD TLB, and see how much he used, in those small tires on the front of that. Regards Robert
Yes, totally aware of the amount. Calcium however, for lb for lb is the best but, you have the rust issue that comes with. Other option is dry weight, metal weights. If you've never driven a tractor that has only the metal weights on it, I suggest you do, then compare the ride vs one that has fluid in the tires. Completely 2 different ride styles. Fluid gives a smoother ride. The other biggest drawback to tires that have fluid in them, you gotta remove it when replacing tires. Honestly, it's really not that hard to do either and will very little waste if any at all, if you know what you're doing.
TsmnnDvl5 Hi thanks for the reply. Yes I'm fully aware of all the advantages and disadvantages of weight methods. I do calcium in my tractor tires on the farm here, and pump it/ repair tires myself. I don't pay the tire guys crazy money to do it. I fix tractors for guys in my workshop when I'm not busy farming. so not totally clueless on a lot of things either. Regards Robert
Wes , you dont use moldboard plows anymore ? or harrows ? thats how we always did it ? i guess im old fashion hahaha love your videos ,,, keep on farming !
That's giving her a workout dragging that cultivator and some of it looks as though it is coming up wet! Do you ever subsoil down to about 16-20"? Many people who have min-tilled for a number of years here in the UK have found that compaction below normal tillage depth has become an issue. (Heavier kit, tractors, trailers, sprayers etc and wetter winters coupled with farms getting bigger has resulted in soils being worked outside the "ideal" timing.) Extra weight on the front will, as you say, give you more traction and make the hydraulics work as well to hold the correct desired depth.
I agree with you about the soil temp,we are just a crossed the river from you,had one bad night right after corn came out of the ground,Temp hit 32 degrees one night. corn survived but only yielded 55 bushel to the acre!!
Here in indiana we chisel right after we harvest.. So the ground has plenty of time settle down before we run the field cultivator the following spring
Wes the 4960 appears to be running better than ever. 1 quick question what do you think of the JD 4730 sprayer with 90 foot booms? Keep the great videos coming.
Tractor sounds good after all that work and frustration. Some of the guys question the "Ear Plugs" and it makes a difference after listening to noise all day long.
Do you think the old girl pulls better then your 8120? I checked that tractor data site out and they have smiler power and weight according to that anyway
Wow, you are getting so many likes Wes, it's awesome :D. I am guilty for forgetting to like all the time, sorry, don't forget to always thumb up :D or I will probably forget :O :(
it went from 2k to 1900 rpm and he said it was lugging to much, lol. run it at 15 or 1600 rpm. we did that all the time on the hard Ohio clay. every deere guy seems to be afraid to lug the engine. case guys lug the engine with no issues. I ran 4440,4650, 4760 and 8300 for years. I didn't know how a real tractor pulled until we got the case 7250 and 8940. never ran a deere again!
