    Ricardo when you build the new coop use silicone on ever joint/gap so the ticks can't hide, if you're going to paint it use silicone that you can paint over.

    Another treatment you can apply to the coop, bedding and dust the birds with is food safe Diatomaceous earth. It is a ground up form of diatom shells that are safe for the birds and will not effect the eggs. It's cheaper and safer than the other treatments you mentioned. Spraying lemon oil on all of the wood also chases the bugs away. If you have lemons or oranges grind them up and soak them in mineral oil then strain it and use as a spray.

Can you imagine if a person had a hatchery and got invaded … yikes! I can tell you, this is one time my husband commented, he’s glad we have winter here in our northern climate, Nova Scotia, Canada. Seems many homestead families have, and are moving from California to North Carolina … you can even have a bonfire there … 😄🇨🇦

I thought they were roaches, odd shape until I watched your video and took a picture. Yup ticks. I saw them only near where I house the chickens.daytime and nighttime area. Thank you ❤

    I cried after watching this video because I can totally relate. I’m going through this now but with a different type of pest called stick tight flea. Last Sunday one of my Isa Browns was acting odd and I thought she was egg bound. After soaking her multiple times we were inspecting her and noticed something by her ear. I took pictures and asked on a backyard chicken group what the bugs were because they didn’t look like mites or lice. They seem to be a rare insect because I’m having a hard time finding information like you guys did. These insects are like ticks and they can live on the host for 4-6 weeks! If we didn’t notice her being off she probably would have died from anemia. We have been rubbing Vaseline on their comb, wattles, ears and around their eyes to smother the fleas. We are spraying the permethrin and using lime and DE around the coup. Also cleaning very thoroughly. It’s a lot of work but we are doing everything we can to help them.

    • @floridahomesteader7983
      @floridahomesteader7983 9 месяцев назад +2

      We also rub our legs down with coconut oil to prevent the fleas from getting on us. I didn’t know how bad they were until I looked at my pants and they were crawling up my pants legs. One was embedded in my leg. I had to really scrape to get it off. We also strip off our clothes before going in the house.

    Thanks for sharing both the good and bad. I wish you the best for the future! It may be worth sealing the cracks on the new coop with some kind of sealant. The big tubes of construction adhesive are cheap, and add a lot of strength when cured. If it happens again in the future, You may be able to completely seal the coop with plastic, and fumigate it while keeping it away from the chickens. It may take weeks, and multiple treatments to make sure they're all gone though, especially the eggs.

    Copper naphanate is used to prevent insect damage to wood but it stinks worse than chicken squat. I used it to treat the floor or my coop and it needed to air out for a week lol. Indoor fogger for bed bugs is the pyrothrin stuff, I use it for yellow jackets nesting in walls. DE in your coop and bedding may help as prevention to nasty creatures.

    you could fumigate coop by burning sulfur , sulfur fumes gets in all cracks and anywhere you're not able to spray , it will kill everything and leaves a coating that all bugs stay away from. I always dust coop with wood ashes mixed with sulfur and sand before putting bedding down and it keeps all bugs away.

    Arghh!! This is freaking me out!!
    I am so sorry that that happened to you.
    My son and daughter-in-law are in the process of building a coop for my ladies, Cheesecake, Treasure and Jezebel and their bossy boyfriend, Brewster de Rooster. I am learning so much from you. One thing that you have made apparent is that they are really overdoing this coop! If I had this infestation happen in our coop, it would be a total nightmare to take it apart. I would have to just plastic seal the whole coop, fog it and let it set for a month. Then, I'd have to unseal it and let it air out for another month before I could let my girls back into it. You did make me feel a little better when you said that those ticks prefer dry climates. We are in America's Rain Forest, South Carolina so, hopefully, we are safe from that.
    When we moved out here, we were one of the only families out here. Well, now we've been found! Developers are building like Crazy and turning over the soil in some wild places. We've had a whole Summer fighting cockroaches - Brrrr!!! I wonder if that Permectrin II will work on the cochroach problem?
    Does diatomaceous earth help to control the ticks? Somebody said to add it to their dust bath to control mites.
    I can't seem to get my ladies to hold still long enough to allow me to check them as well as I would like, so DE has been my go-to mite control ( plus I like that it is totally natural.)

    If you place the coop under a tree, the ticks can jump off and they can hibernate in the bark for 12 months, longer than in dead wood. No wild birds are needed for contamination because the ticks can come from a last years wild nest. So. I would check the tree and clear it from nesting material, also spray the bark with bio agent which isn't harmful to wild birds and trim the tree. Also, check the undergrowth and surrounding bush for places where water ends up. Good video

    When you build the new coop, it is imperative that you CAULK every seam, every place where a board joins another board, every nook and cranny! Do that and use Permethrin (a residual insecticide) and you should be good.

    Oh my gosh. This sounds like some sort of horror movie. I never heard of these. We live in the mountains so maybe we don't have them??? If we would have to tear our coop down, my husband would go berserk since he had it custom built for me. I know we have ticks here, but we don't free range because we don't have the room. We also have a covered run so hopefully the wild birds can't infect them. I am so sorry this happened to you. What a nightmare. On the bright side, you can now build a coop that works better for you.

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  Год назад +1

      It really was our own horror movie. I, nor anyone in my family had ever heard of a bird tick. They act more like bed bugs than a traditional tick. Funny thing is we don’t have traditional ticks here as the weather is not hospitable. But I guess these bird ticks like this desert climate. Hopefully there are no bird ticks near you. Our next coop we are going to seal gaps and cracks to not leave opportunities for homes for them to hide and breed. This could prevent mites as well. The article I linked in the description has good information about that

    We had this happen to us in Maryland. It was horrible. I had to tear apart the whole small coop that Rent the chicken provided us for the 2 hens. It was a complete nightmare. I have since did as one comment suggested and siliconed all cracks and crevices I could to prevent any hiding places.

    Great channel and hope you have no more fowl-tick problems ... try caulking and painting the interior of the coop with a good quality sealant/paint that will eliminate those hiding places where material come together to form a joint or corner ... it would be like a seal inside and out to prevent places for them to hide ... just an idea ... little more work and "investment" in materials, but may be more than worth it in the long run ...

    Wow, this is crazy. I am getting ready to build my coop, an 8X8 that is tall enough that I can get inside. It will be made mostly from recycled lumber from a structure I tore down. I wonder if while I build and assemble this if caulking all the joints and then painting the inside will help remove hiding places and make cleaning easier. We are in NM east of Albuquerque at 6600' elevation. It gets into the teens during the winter so hopefully that will kill and reduce them. Glad to hear you are recovering.

    I saw a video recently (I think maybe it was Justin Rhodes?) where a coop owner took a small blowtorch to the cracks. Obviously only for a second- not long enough to ignite anything but enough to kill any pests. Might be too risky in your area but could be a method of prevention for others. New chicken owner here- thanks for sharing all your knowledge!
