    Chickens need natural branches to perch on- not boards. This is per one of the top two bird vets in the U.S. Also, they need to be fed a pelleted food. "Scratch" is only for an occasional snack. Pelleted food such as that made by Roudybush ensures that they get all the required vitamins, minerals, etc. that they need. Scratch lacks that. We have rescued chickens. The hens are all implanted to stop the egg laying that otherwise kills them early. Any occasional egg that happens as a result of us not implanting soon enough is boiled and fed back to the hen who laid it to help replace nutrients lost in forming the egg. I am adding this info. for anyone receptive to it. I wish someone had mentioned these things to us years ago.

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  Год назад

      Hello we do like using natural branches and tree roots as roosts but but really matter is the roost is wide enough do the chickens feet lay flat. There can be many ways to desired results that may work for different people. Also to clarify that is not scratch, is is a chicken feed formulated to all the chickens dietary needs, all organic and small buisness woman owned. The brand is called “Scratch and Peck” poking fun at what chickens do, not meaning is is literal scratch grains.

    I recommend the egg door for future coops be on the front of the nesting boxes instead of the top. Chickens are hunted from above and so having the front door instead of the top door this will help not stress them out when collecting eggs if a chicken happens to be brooding

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  Год назад +2

      I feel like people always say this based on a different coop builder on youtube, however, NEVER have any of our chickens been frightened when we open up the nesting box lid. Every once in a while a chicken is in there when we open the lid and they don't even bat an eye. Both designs are cool this is just the one I prefer.

    Lovely! Might use a 2x4 as a rooster bar. Just round the edges. Chickens like to rest over their feet. Round or thin bars don't work as well. Caroline Coops have great videos and ideas. FYI

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  Год назад

      Thank you! 😊 it’s a 2x2 so not round or thin. It’s true chickens are not parrots so feet are not designed to curl their toes to perch. Honestly we have been doing this for so long and have used every kind of roosting material under the sun. From natural wood branches, pipes, 2x4 & 2x2. We have noticed the chickens prefer and have chosen 2x2 as their favorite roosting space. The chickens foot isn’t very large and 2 inches is plenty for their foot to be completely flat and toes covered in winter and comfortable with no over curling. We recommend 2x2 for the same reason Carolina coop would recommend a 2x4. Just have noticed from experience it’s not necessary and 2x2 is more cost and space effective.

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  Год назад +1

      It’s a 2x2 which is plenty for a chickens foot to lay flat. We agree completely with that statement and why we recommend these for that same purpose. You could use a 2x3 laying on the flat side or whatever size you like but I wouldn’t recommend a 1x1 or rounded poles. Thick natural branches or roots can also work as they would have roosted on in nature. If you’re in extreme cold climate you will have to be more careful that others.

    Beautiful work!!! I’m gonna be building a coop this fall. How much height space do you recommend under the coop itself? Especially if we want taller birds like Brahma’s?

      Very cool, I usually make the legs be 22-24 inches tall. Plenty tall for even the larger breeds to hang out underneath. Good luck on your coop build!

    Some coops have a doorman. He/she is high rank ( top 3 ) so technically the resting branches are not equal

    I've been viewing dozens of vids on raising chickens and have yet to find one detailing how to get the hens to raise the chicks. It seems the eggs are always incubated and the chicks are put in a brooder.
    Why is that?

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  2 года назад +1

      Hello hens do a great job at raising their own chicks, better than us humans. They take complete care of them and teach them how to chicken and growing up outside scratching in the ground gives them a good immune system as it introduces them to the microbes in the soil. You cannot get a hen to raise chicks, she must become “broody” they do this on their own and it’s a hormonal shift. You will know your hen wants to brood and hatch her own chicks if she doesn’t leave the nest and gets very warm and she will growl at you. They go almost into a trance. This just happens naturally and there is no way to convince or get them to become broody, you have to just wait for it to naturally happen. Some breeds are prone to being broody like bantams, silkies, and Orpingtons are notorious.

      @@BockBockBouquet Thank you for the response as this is new information to me, Seems really weird though. So, if you didn't harvest the eggs they lay, they'd just rot, as the majority of hens aren't brooding?
      I'm trying to learn all I can now as I expect to do the chicken dive this next spring. I bought 20 Guinea fowl this past spring and it has been an absolute Joy to watch them grow. I bought a gander at the same time and am going to get him a mate on the 17th of this month. Since I'm enjoying the experience so much, it just seems like it's time for chickens. I'm leaning towards a couple of Dorper sheep for next year as well.
      I'll definitely look forward to your videos in the future as I know, there is so much that I don't know. 😆 Thank You for making this information available.

      @@ernestperry5952 Please rescue vs. buying chicks who never had the chance to have their mother. Ever wonder what they do with the males that no one wants? They kill them at one day old. It is best to rescue. I can put you in touch with people who rescue chickens and who already have so many that they are looking for good homes for the newly rescued.
