- "It is the most erotic film that I have ever made," wrote Michael Powell of Black Narcissus. "It is all done by suggestion, but eroticism is in every frame and image, from the beginning to the end."

Jean Simmons, was not the right ethnic to play this part, she was good ,but not Asian/
@Logic Presenter ok,u r taking this to seriously,I am african american we also have a variety of appearances, but r still black/so ok I got it wrong, but why didn't they cast some one of that ethnicity, for the part, from that culture, period!!
It was 1947. There were very few South Asian actors in Hollywood at the time. Sabu (playing The Prince) was the only famous South Asian actor in Hollywood at the time. I don't think there were any South Asian actresses in Hollywood back then... unless we count Vivien Leigh (i.e. lead actress in Gone with the Wind), who is believed to be about 1/4 Indian.
Yes,I understand about lack of right ethnic person to play part,I do !yes Vivian Leigh , I believe was anglo-indian,l
she was anglo-indian not because she had hindu blood, but because she was born in india, which was part of the british empire. also, it is ironic that you thought of vivien leigh, because jean simmons, without the dark foundation worn in this movie, looks a lot like vivien leigh. and i mean, a whole lot. merle oberon was indian, but she did everything to hide it; also, i don’t know what age she was or if she would have been appropriate age-wise or look-wise for the part jean simmons plays. @@karenjones7651
