The actor who played Jesse was in the closet at the time. When this movie came out, it was during the height of what’s called Gay Panic and early days of the AIDS crisis. And it caused The actor to not getting any more work. Essentially, he left the business after this and moved to Mexico. There’s an insightful documentary called Scream Queen, My Nightmare on Elm Street.

I always saw the ending as an allusion to a popular misconception at the time that finding the right woman/man (delete as appropriate) would "cure" homosexuality

Freddy is Jesse's sexual confusion. It's a metaphor for the writer's own sexual confusion at the time. He claimed "it was supposed to be subtext" but it's blatantly there. FFS he had a Probe game in his closet and a sign on the door that said "no chicks." Jesse literally runs away from Lisa and goes to Grady, or the gay bar, and Freddy's only vanquished when he finally admits he loves her. Jesse is kind of the damsel-in-distress in the end and it's Lisa that saves him with the power of love. It's totally the point of the movie.

Definitely an apt metaphor for someone who's been made to feel that their sexuality is an aberration. But it's an absolutely devastating idea that he could will it away by forcing romantic love with Lisa only to discover the feelings will alway be there. The more I think about it, the sadder this movie is to me 😫.The first viewing was such a campy good time(still scary but fun), but I think the second might make me cry 😂

The actor playing Jesse, Mark Patton, is a gay man. He's said he was playing him as a closeted gay guy. The writer of the script also said the homosexual elements were intentional, and Freddy's actor was also well aware of them and leaned into it on purpose. Apparently, though, the director was either unaware or uninterested in that aspect while filming.

Since you've recently seen Halloween 2, I highly recommend at least finishing Laurie's story with H20. It was made to complete the story by people who love the story (it also ignores 4, 5 & 6). There are no other movies after that until Rob Zombie did his remakes and then the franchise was rebooted with the official sequel in 2018. Nope, none whatsoever.
Regarding _Nightmare,_ the next three sequels showcase the smartass Freddy we all know and love, but don't forget _Wes Craven's New Nightmare_ and _Freddy vs. Jason,_ they're a lot of fun. A Nightmare on Elm Street Pt:2 released in November 1st 1985. A little under a year since the first Nightmare due to overwhelming success of the classic.
*Fun Fact:* the first Elm Street had fierce competition with another notoriously controversial horror movie that was pulled a week since it was released imagine that a "Killer Santa" would have been a horror icon
Yes, the first Silent Night Deadly Night premiered the same day as the first Elm St.
    November 16th 1984

I've probably watched ten at this point, and they're great for repeat viewing just to have on in the background while I'm going about my day. Along with Redlettermedia this is my favorite channel for movie commentary. The funny shit you say while watching these movies has me in stitches! I've been in a great mood with the weather getting nicer and listening to these videos just makes it better. I hope you keep on, especially with the horror franchises. @@avgnfandon2 I liked it more than part 4, 5 and 6. I've heard some people say that part 1, 3, and New Nightmare can be seen as their own trilogy, which I agree. The only problem is that at the point when that movie was made the character just wasn't scary anymore. He had lost his edge. I mean you see kids cheering him on in that movie. Although I do enjoy watching it, it's just not as creepy as the first 3 movies. But that's my own opinion

Mark Patton has a documentary called “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street.” It’s fascinating. Nightmare 2 is just bizarre. It’s a one-off that makes little sense with weird gay subtext woven in. As far as the rest of the series, 3 is one of the best, 4 is decent and then New Nightmare is pretty good. The rest of them are awful.

    • @MLJ7956

Mark Patton, Nightmare 2 Director Jack Sholder and writer David Chaskin all talk extensively about the making of the film (including all the gay undertones in it) in the long documentary - Never Sleep Again: The Nightmare On Elm Street Legacy (which goes into each Nightmare film in great details within the entire franchise - which is why the documentary is so long, including the crossover Freddy Vs. Jason as well as the short lived TV series Freddy's Nightmares). It is worth checking out (and may even make you appreciate what some of the other sequels were trying to do, although not always very well). 😁👍

I'm glad you mentioned that about the bird in the cage. I think it's cruel too, they are made to fly vast distances, yet it's confined to a small little cage where it can't even fly. I feel the same about fish in a bowl. Fish swim vast distances yet they're confined to a small little bowl where they'll just swim around in circles for the rest of their lives. I also don't see the point of owning such animals. I love them so much but you will never give a fish the same amount of attention you would a cat or a dog, which is pretty sad as it's sacrificing it's whole life to imprisonment just for you to say 'look, I have a fish'. Seems too cruel to me and for such a pointless reason too. I mean why would you ever want a fish or a bird? What can you possibly get from keeping such animals in the restrictions they're kept in? They're quite literally there just for decoration. Sad.
