    I used to hate it as a kid. I tried it again as an adult expecting to hate it but actually quite liked it.
    A word of warning, it's like heroin. You have to up the dose to keep getting the same hit. I'm a thick spreader now, pretty soon I might be a finger dipper. I need to find help.

      yeah I agree but everyone seems to think that the way to eat marmite is in small amounts ?
      You don’t thinly spread you overdose then you toast it off with a cuppa marmite so you can get rid of that bread and butter aftertaste 🤪

      Never could understand how people can't work out the fact it comes in a small jar which must mean you don't need to use much .
      I mean I don't see many people pour ketchup on a desert spoon then ram it in their gobs.

    2:50 yes, I agree. That is a good colour for toast. one shade lighter, is still just bread. One shade darker is too carbonized. It's a very difficult situation to get correctly. Congratulations on your success in toasting. M

    Marmite is really great in cooking too. Added to gravy or soups/stews it gives a really deep flavor to it. It can give a gravy a very beefy flavor even though you didn't have any beef drippings for a gravy.
    Its supposed to be used sparringly.

    That was my first fault after i moved to London 3 weeks ago. I bought all the things i needed for my perfect morning muesli. Yoghurt, apples, bananas, different nuts and finally honey. The honey was MARMITE. It stood next to other kinds of honeys in the shopping shelfs... So eventually i took a big spoon of it. It was terrible! You are expecting honey and that that! My whole muesli was contaminated by MARMITE! So i washed all fruits and nuts under water. Then i startet again and finally enjoyed my muesli without MARMITE. Now it is all the way back in the cupboard. May be now i will give it a new chance. :-) Thank you for your Video. It was not without sense. You see?! :-D

    This is an excellent video for Marmite beginners.
    However, over the years I started enjoying a thick layer of the stuff. A couple of years ago I also started putting the Marmite on first as this allows you to spread it more evenly and it gets absorbed directly in to the toast, then butter on top of the Marmite.
    I do also enjoy eating it straight of of the jar with my fingers.

    Marmite is a love/hate thing, but I have always loved it. After lots of experimentation, I have discovered the perfect way to eat it (in my opinion). Use granary bread. Mix enough butter and a small amount of Marmite into a paste, in a bowl. When your toast pops up, quickly spread the mixture onto the toast. Perfect!

    Add it to chilli or spag bol and it’s lovely, also add it to things like baked beans/tinned spaghetti. One strange one which sounds gross but is actually really nice, mix marmite with Philadelphia cream cheese and use it as a dip with breadsticks 😛

    Thanks for your video. I enjoy Marmite this way as well and even my 18 month old daughter enjoyed it this way. Another way you could try is with soft crusty bread spread with butter both sides marmite on one side and covered with iceberg lettucue on top and squashed down. No vinegrette and eaten with cucumber or cherry toms on the side. Lovely in summer. regards from France.

    Although I was not about to eat spoonful, I would have messed up the spreading. Thanks so much. ;-) [update] My Marmite arrived... Ok, I like it and can see how this could be an every day thing. Being a 7th of 9 generation Californian, we always explore, shun convention and tradition. I just discovered that this pairs well with Cabernet! Perfect when relaxing after work. Cheers!

  • @lumpyfishgravy

    Good point, well made. The other way to do it is let the toast cool down enough that it doesn't go soggy with the butter. Then you'll have ultimate control over marmite spreading.

    Got my hands on a jar of Marmite yesterday and tried it using this method. Well... let's just say that after I finished the first piece of toast, I immediately went to the kitchen to make another one. Instant addiction. :D
    I was curious so I tried a tiny bit on its own as well, and yeah, eating it straight out of the jar would be disgusting. The taste is kinda similar to soy sauce, but more concentrated, bitter, and kind of... herby? It would be like chugging soy sauce out of the bottle but 5 times worse.

    • @prufrockrocks79
      @prufrockrocks79 5 лет назад

      Yes! I put it in homemade mushroom soup. Chop celery, celery leaves, mushrooms, garlic and any odds and ends from the fridge (e.g. half a carrot, a random tomato etc). Put in everything except the celery leaves in a pan with a little oil. Briefly fry said veg and shrooms in said oil. Boil a kettle and put one teaspoon of marmite into a cup. Pour over the boiling water and stir. Add the water and marmite 'stock' to the shrooms and veg. If you have a jar of vegan pesto with a tiny bit left in the bottom, add that too. Simmer until cooked, then add the celery leaves, stir and eat. My mum never eats anything I cook, but even she really likes this.

      There are no harmful ingredients known. However, it might be helpful to know that yeast extract is almost pure natural glutamate. That's why it delivers us the delightful umami tase. Very few people react sensitive to glutamate, monosodiumglutamate to be more specific. The chinese restaurant syndrome and the popular refusal of glutamate is based on a huge ill-founded hoax.

    • @MrSonofsonof
      @MrSonofsonof 8 лет назад +1

      Tricky question that. You would think that if all the input costs are in GBP (labour, raw materials) and 99% of production is sold in Britain, currency fluctuations shouldn't make a difference. But if the owner (in this case Unilever) posts results in a foreign currency like dollars or euros, it will want to increase the price in the UK to compensate for the relative weakness of the pound. Of course, it doesn't have a totally free hand in this because retailers and consumers wlll resist (and Marmite is not the only yeast extract on the market - Tesco for example has its own brand). At the end of the day Unilever might simply have to accept a hit to its euro/dollar results.
      Or it might not.

    Having lived in England for so long you must know by now that someone, or something, that produces a 'Marmite effect' is someone who elicits an equally strong reaction of either love or hatred. There is no neutral position when someone is Marmite. "That Chris Moyles he's a bit Marmite isn't he?" Chris Broad (Abroad in Japan) did a RUclips clip titled 'Japanese people attempt to eat Marmite.' It didn't go down at all well.

    Great video and many thanks for Jen Dre to show how to eat Marmite.
    But Marmite is not only eaten on a toast but also in many other ways like as a seasoning in many recipes.
    If you are in Brazil you can find a very similar yeast extract by the name of Cenovit.
    You can buy Cenovit directly from the company's store in Sao Paulo through the WhatsApp: 11985499457.
    Cenovit taste great.

    When you have been eating it for 30+years you really do want half a teaspoon on your toast

    Marmite can be used to promote world peace, don't you know? Marmite contains yeast, yeast makes people less irritable, Arabs and Israelis don't eat enough yeast cos they eat unleavened bread and don't drink (enough) beer, De Bono wanted middle east hospitals to hand out samples of Marmite. Thanks, QI.

      It is forbidden for Muslims to drink beer, which is why they are so hyper-tense and angry all the time.
