Mark, would you say Kensington is worse than Skid Row? I know Kens is a smaller area than Skid.

    • @SoftWhiteUnderbelly

Skid Row and Kensington are very similar. The biggest differences are that tents hide a lot on Skid Row. Skid Row has a variety of different drugs where it appears that 95% of the addicts in Kensington are using fentanyl. It’s important to understand that this exact situation is going on all over the U.S., not just LA and Philadelphia. You can find similar problems in every large city in every state. If you’re not seeing it it’s because you don’t want to see it. Even the most rural areas have terrible problems with drugs. It’s becoming difficult to pretend it’s not something we need to address.

Even in my small city of 28,000 in Canada there’s over 350 homeless people. There’s a massive homeless encampment right in the middle of town next to a highway and literally no one cares. They all want them gone so they don’t need to see it. The problem is that little piece of land is owned by the province and not the township so they can’t just kick them out. Some local city workers have been helping them out with getting rid of their garbage and other things but all I see is other residents complaining and asking the classic “why can’t these people just get a job?” It’s still so misunderstood. Somehow.

I have never seen anything like this first hand and I hope I never do. The people laid on the street and the dirt and rubbish. Not only was it very emotional to watch but it felt like another world. Drugs didn't put them on the streets. Poverty, systematic racism, unreliable employment laws, lack of free healthcare and substandard social safety nets put them on the streets. In most cases the drugs come when a life is already too much for the individual to handle. Living on the streets is close to unbearable, and being high negates that. Putting the blame on drugs means that politicians can continue to win election on being tough on drugs rather than actually fixing the source of America's drug and homelessness problem

My first week someone tried to break into my home. The police NEVER came. Exactly one month later a man over dosed in front of my door, he was there for at least 12 hours before someone came to pick him up. It's terrifying and heartbreaking because honestly irregardless of their past or addictions this is human life & the city of Philadelphia doesn't give a rats ass. I've fed people around here I've given them clothes and had conversations with them & most of them are just like you and me only difference is life fucked them up beyond repair & the people who are supposed to "care" left them behind.

It's been about fifteen years since I lived in Philadelphia. I drove through Kensington at least a few times every year. It's definitely way worse than it used to be. There are easily five times more people on the street.
My good friend died from fentanyl overdose last year. He was a middle-class, middle-aged man with an English Literature degree, working at a regional marketing firm. How does this happen?
It happens when you start doing adderal to churn out more work (eventually cocaine), and take oxy and vicodin to come down. It gets expensive, so you start using heroin and meth as a speedball. You eventually need the pain meds to deal with your failing organs. Fentanyl is really cheap compared to heroin and 50 times as strong. You can OD on two grains. If you cut the fentanyl with meth, you get extreme focus, but your high is mellow. So you can just do anything. But when the meth wears off (adderal and cocaine wear off way faster), you still have the fentanyl in your system, without the stimulants, so your blood pressure drops, and your systems shut down. That's what happened to my friend. He stopped breathing because his system was so relaxed that it just stopped. Technically he suffocated, but didn't feel a thing.

Each one of them has had - and continues to have - intricate life stories, memories, relationships, thoughts, dreams, fears, regrets and hopes. In societies that consistently ignore and dehumanise the most vulnerable of its citizens, even the simple act of bearing witness to their existence is more important than some might expect. I worked at Temple Episcopal Hospital in Kensington for a short time. Every day I got off the train, I had to walk about a block to enter the hospital. I would normally pass 1 to 3 fentanyl users passed out on the ground in that space at 7 am. Needless to say, our critical response unit was constantly full of people overdosing. Yes, there are used needles on ground. A lot of combative patients, and the psych unit was always full. Kensington is not a small area, it is a neighborhood and many people squat in dilapidated buildings. The sheer number of people on the streets. One thing that video cannot capture is the experience of being there. Some of these people starve themselves for drugs, then you go and make eye contact with them, they stumble around you, sit in some of the most uncomfortable positions imaginable and yell out occasionally. Few of them seem lucid, and when they are, they are searching for a fix. I truly hope some of them can escape the cycle, but I know it is unlikely. It does not feel like the richest country in the world. Whatever perception you have of America, I can guarantee it will change after going to a place like this.

I have been working with people addicted to heroin/opiates for 10+ years, i've been clean for 12 years. There is such a widely diverse population of people who suffer from addiction and although we continue to fight the stigma that addiction is just the "poor people" who come from poor homes with bad upbringings it will continue. Currently if we look at this politically, it is obvious that there is a line drawn between those people we can waste our time on to help (for appearances only), and those we might as well just throw away. There is plenty of money in this country to help them all. There are plenty of empty, salvageable buildings and medical facilities we can rebuild to house and treat, I can show pictures of hundreds of them, already set up and ready but abandoned and waiting to be leveled. As you can see, and there was a comment below about this, those in charge would rather spend the money building new buildings, new, updated, "for profit" facilities and more and more expensive housing and shopping/restaurant venues. My city has shut down 3 sober houses, now they are building coffee shops, Starbucks, gas stations and etc where they were. There is not a chance that any of these people can get out of their situation, get a job, afford a rent and all of the bills on a mere job at a coffee shop, retail establishment or even a warehouse when rent for even a studio apartment is 1,500 dollars a month! How many people are getting housing subsidies? Not many. What kind of mind set do you think comes from that reality, it's not a good one and with that being said, many have already lost everything, their jobs, homes, cars...there is nothing left but the high, do you understand? There is also the fact that our politicians just ignore the situation and continue to send money to other countries and even when agencies are given grants and allotments you really have to know that more often than not, the money is going to the top of ladder, the CEO"s, Executive Directors and so on, the ones connected to investments in big pharma, the new real estate, the ones who receive their dividends and investment earnings just like the politicians. It is fixed, it's all fixed and even if you speak or try to have a voice you get useless talk and no answers or resolution and it's because of money, period. Everybody wants their piece of luxury and right now, in these times they do not care one iota about the poor, sick, addicted or mentally ill, they are "throw away" beings, I was a throw away being, unsalvageable, a waste of time and of course, money. It's in every city and every town in this country. Of course I am not saying that there are not people dedicated to helping them get well, myself included, I am not at the top of the ladder, those of us at the bottom don't get the spoils, we get what's left but, it's my life and I entered into this thinking that if I at least help one person then it was worth it and I have, I am good at it. I won't stop, i'm 56 years old and I will likely continue working well through my retirement years. Fighting the system is exhausting. When you are fighting for your client you are going up against resistance, you are fighting for their right to be human, their right to "quality" medical care, food, housing, treatment, education and dignity. You might have the idea that they are receiving benefits and they get all of that for free. Wrong, there is very little that state medical pays for and it's ALWAYS a fight to get things paid for and the criteria for many programs is set just so that only a certain amount of people will ever qualify. As someone who works in it, directly with clients, you either continue fighting or you become one of "those" and take a "shut your mouth" and join our club position, a "sell out" , a little raise, a little recognition or plaque with your name on it...nahhhh, shove it, I will never be one of "those".

Started using at 11 with his sister, who ended up dying of an overdose at 18. Others have been stabbed, shot, hit by cars and they just seem so numb to the pain of trying to survive. They were some of the most honest and open people I’ve ever talked to. This video captures the state of Kensington with people openly shooting up and needles littering the streets. People riding dirt-bikes, ATVs, whatever with no helmet, potholes on all the roads, glass on the sides of the roads from broken windows, infrastructure that is falling apart, humid/hot as fuck, empty beer/liquor bottles everywhere, homeless/fiends/gang-bangers. One of the roughest cities Ive ever seen alongside Stockton CA, Oakland CA, Detroit Michigan, New Orleans Lousiana, Mississippi and some parts of NY. And when you’re part of the drug addicted mass, this all seems like a regular day in the neighborhood. I’ve spent far too much time and money down here. Just finally kicked it 23 days ago. Seeing this after moving away in 2020 really hurts. It looks like it got even worse. I didn’t think it could get worse than 2019 somerset. That block was constantly fucked up.

I’m so glad u were able to get to a more hopeful, stable environment. I can’t even imagine the lows u were at but trust me when I say u got the strength to keep going strong 🤝 wish u the best!

Don't even get me started on City Council. I can't count the number of Councilmembers who've been convicted of corruption. And our mayor literally just said he "can't wait" to leave office so he doesn't have to deal with our city's record-breaking gun violence epidemic anymore. They simply don't care about anyone but the wealthy businessmen who bribe them.

My family lives here and I am a Philadelphia native however I never grew up in this area but have been there. This hurts me to my core in ways that are indescribable. These people are someone’s son, daughter, brother, sister etc and they truly don’t deserve this. This goes to show why it’s so important to address poverty and mental health. No one envisions this for themselves and many feel like they have no way out. My heart goes out to everyone and anyone struggling right now🙏

Most of these people come from rich ass suburbs and do drugs cuz mommy and daddy didnt hug them enough so they come to our city and fuck it up worse than it already is because they have no connection to it. My office is on Cambria and the Ave and im constantly beating these scumbags up. Hopefully at least one realizes they arent built for these streets and decides to take their bitch ass back to Delco where they belong.

Fuck all these lazy ass losers. Theres a time to grow the fuck up. Zero sympathy. Funny thing is most the people that want to coddle these losers have never even been through the shit.

I'm one tragedy away from being a junky? Nope. Most people don't destroy themselves after a tragedy. And most people don't start taking recreational drugs because of a tragedy, they do it because they want to party. I've known plenty of these people. But of course after it's gone too far they all know that it's much easier to get sympathy and more drug money with a sob story.
