By mid-July it was time for the final gentle amble up the last bit of the north Coventry canal to Fradley Junction. The main thing of note was how thick the overgrowth was not only on the offside but the towpath side as well - and quite a lot of weeds growing up within the canal itself. I've been told this whole area is earmarked for a good cut back by CRT's volunteer team and you can see it really does neeed it!

I am developing bad habits watching your vlogs, I started by having a cup of tea while watching, then it was a cup of tea and two plain biscuit, now it's a cup of tea and several chocolate biscuits, where will it all end? Great vlog
Just keep off the booze! Best wishes to you.
As of writing your channel has 71K subs and this video (less than 24 hours old) has been viewed 34,825 times. That's astonishing. Just shows the power of quality editing and material. Congrats.
Thank you Mr. CC. I do so appreciate your wit and commentary interspersed with quiet cruising. Cheers from the US.
Parts of this one remind me of the film African Queen! I half expected Audrey Hepburn to start screaming about leeches as you pushed through the lush growth. As always a great watch.
I love the putt putt of the old two cylinders! Sounds just like an old John Deere tractor in the US.
Phil Jungels - Was just thinking “Johnny Popper” lol!
Just a few days ago I was wondering what it would be like to refit a boat using Grampa 1950s John deer and running the boat off the PTO shaft
"I want everything!" Me too, brother. Me too. But I'd settle for a canal side cottage and a narrowboat.
This is the type of England I envisioned reading stories in my childhood. Rural, quiet, lush vegetation, shady footpaths with blotches of sunlight.
@2:42 the side of the boat says Unknown #3 Arch Stanton 1862 and above that it says "registered at Eastwood (something) 1966". In the film 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' starring Clint Eastwood and released in 1966 Arch Stanton 3 February 1862 is on the grave marker where the gold is supposed to be buried. However the gold was actually buried in the next grave marked Unknown.
I wondered why that was bugging me so much... Bravo!
That might just be the prettiest canal yet. Thanks for another great video sir!
Busy binge watching your Vlogs and wishing this virus would '' do one' stay save everyone
Thank you David, always very nice to wake and be taken on a leisurely cruise out in the country side, so green. We here in Australia are going through a very prolonged drought and I envy your green pastures.
I could listen to the sound of the classic 2 cylinder engines all day. The sound they make is so satisfying
They are fun...
Great video, as usual , thanks again for another delightful trip with delightful commentary...lol. One tiny request if I may please ☺
When you go to the store or other brief land excursions for lunch or tea and cookies, it would be delightful for your fans to come along on those with you,
Can you perhaps include a couple of short clips of that too, so we won't have to stay back at the boat and twiddle our thumbs until you return?. .. just kidding on that part, of course...lol
Hi I hope we said hello. we are at minute 7.00 to minute 7.12. Regards Tom and Ann
I remember you and those lovely plants. You have a lovely home.
Another great visit with you on your adventures on the cut. Thanks for taking us along!
A very pleasant relaxing video.
I have seen about 15 or so of your videos so far...and this part ( 13:50 ) of this one was the most beautiful of all of them to me. It's just stunningly gorgeous. It looks surreal. And where you stopped at the end was just lovely as well.
Thank you for this.
Im not being biased but i think your videos are the best out of all the rest .
But I like that kind of bias!! Cheers
I agree with Norman.
The classic engine sound is like the Harley Davidson sound of narrow boats. Really enjoy your Videos
Good day to you!. My wife and I are very much enjoying your videos of your narrowboat adventures. We are in the U.S. and have been RV'ers for 30 years and can relate to your good, and bad, times aboard your boat. We 'backed up' and started with your very first video and have watched them all. You do a fantastic job. We are Suzanne and James from the Beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast. Cheers!!
Hello! Thanks for tuning in.
Hi David! here's a freebee for you, canal boat Jousting, same principals of medieval jousting on horses but instead of a trusty steed you use your floating homes. Got to make this worth the watch so forget about broom handles fixed to the Bow, use half a telegraph pole cut to a point like a giant pencil. You can also add an earlier element of weaponry by adding to the side of your craft some sticky out metal poles to give a bit of Boudica Scythe chariot going on........so what do you think? maybe brainstorm it with your canal boat Vloging buddies to see if it floats their boats......pun intended!
I’ve been binge watching both your channels. I’m a bicyclist, so I would have to have my bike with me. I figure about an hour ride each morning would be a great start to each day. Great job on the videos, also.
That classic boat sound reminded me of my summers west of Oslo, Norway, at the Oslo fjord, while I grew up. I now live in the U.S., but will never forget that cozy engine sound. Thank you for a lovely virtual narrowboat ride! Love your videos. :-)
Lovely scenery David it’s so relaxing to watch for us who are grounded on dry land...!!! Keep up the good work
Thanks David. You made an not so well old man, feel a tad bette.🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍👍
Your channel is my sanity now. Your voice is easy to listen to, never too fast, or too slow. The video moves at the best pace. You are Goldilocks dream. Just right. I have tried to watch some other boating vlogs, in other countries. They move slowly, are burdened with music i don't fancy. I want to see the countryside, the towns, the animals, the glass of the canal, the arches of the bridges.... The weather, the people by the locks or on the tow path You show it just right...and tell what one wants to know. Your humour is so good.
Thank you :-)
My wife and I are from Texas. She would love to see video of your travels into town. We LOVE your videos and always look forward to your next one.
Howdy - for us who have never been over the Pond, some video of the walk to stores, pubs, and the like would be great! Car parks, how the "mains card" works (and costs), the current price of fuel, if your cell single works where you are, if there are bugs (and need for screens) and oh you know, just good stuff like some more info onr washing machine. Also, is a Danfoss compressor/fridg/freezer an option and what is your daily amp use? One, none or all is appreciated. Love the VLOG, never fail top open up and enjoy with a "Cuppa". Hope to see ya Stateside some day. Bob Jarrard - Boulder City, Nevada, USA
Hi. Some of this is answered on my website FAQ page. I don't intend filming at the shops as they won't appreciate it, it means I'd have to lug the camera along when I'm trying to get my shopping (and when walking back with heavy bags that's the last thing I want) plus the vlog is always going to be about the canals rather than general UK life life shops.
The "fun little day boat" was a Shetland 535, I have had 4! Great boats and when I first met my wife we spent 2 weeks holiday in one!
After that I knew she would put up with me 😂
Hi David, Your Vlog is always that evening's before bed quiet time. I much enjoy your style and hope someday to travel from New England to Britain and have a trip on the canals. Thank you for sharing your journey! Danielle, Vermont, USA.
I love that canal boat as planter - would make a lovely piece in a painting.
You always make me laugh "chaotically busy road scene on the bridge ahead".
The windsock was for Pegasus.😉
Hahaha of course!
Gorgeous Vlog! I always watch your channel full-screen with the sound up. A treat for the eyes and ears.
So lovely these old engines. Sure puts a smile on your face. Would love to own a boat with one.
The boat engine noise you ask about is the lovely putt putt of a Ruston & Hornsby 2 VSH engine...... beautiful!
A superb vdeo David - thank you. The end of the vlog was lovely scenery - can't help the A38 and the light aircraft passing overhead, Just before Fradley Junction - very beautiful.
Well I've done it. I started at 1 and went all the way through to 184. It took me several days and a lot of "What the hell are you doing"s from my wife but it was fun. Oh, I did digress to watch the van being built and I just enjoyed seeing the kilns and canals in Wales. I am as land locked as can be here in Dallas but I do enjoy your travels and your appreciation of nature in all its glory. Keep it up.
Cheers Michael!
That was a lovely stretch.
Loved the vlog but then I always do! Some gorgeous scenery on that section, a true feast for the eyes. Thank you for taking us with you x
You don't know how much I envy you.
What a spectacular day you had for cruising! Blue skies, greenery everywhere (too lush in places - it reallyd oes choke the canal)
Yeah, baby - I'd love to have a cute cottage on the canal! Nothing too large, definitely nothing fancy. Just cottage-y :D Lots of windows for light.
I loved the classic engine sound chugga chugga chugga... COWS! Yaaaay!!!!
Thank you for opening your life to the world.. very enjoyable
Cute canal-side cottage with space to discretely park a camper van for those longer distance weekend away trips.
The stereo sound as those classic single cylinder engined boats passed was wonderful.
It was a twin ;)
No adds on your videos . It’s great
Last month the waterplants were mowed over here in the Ijselmeer, it was getting annoying and most of the sailboats stayed in because if your prop or keel picks it up you are done. Only thing left to do is dive under the boat and cut it away from the shaft and prop, or wait and let it die off so it drops to the bottom. Talking about engine sound i have a one cylinder too and it sounds so nice. Love the engine sound in the video where one passes your boat. Greets from Holland and keep us updated on your adventures!
You seem to have cultivated a really loyal following here! Usually people draw about 10% views to subscribers - your ratio is evidently a lot higher - congratulations! PS I would love to see some footage of your short jaunts into towns.
Lovely David, and 70k subscribed to your channel
When I travel I like to stock up at little shops. They often have unusual food items. I rarely if ever stop at chain stores.
is it just me but watching the video. when another boat pass by and I see the other captain I keep having the urge to smile and wave
Lovely vlog David. Cheers.
One of your finest video. The scenery is breath taking.
Great stuff just love these vids... so relaxing.🍸🍹🍷🍷🍹🍸
I love your videos I watch then during the school year it rilly removes my stress! Thank you!
I used to binge watch them when I was a student too.
Another great video, another excellent adventure. You are living well😎
Another very enjoyable vlog, get your point about overgrown towpaths but your enemy the angler would love that swim (angling terminology) all overgrown and hidden from his catch!
looks like a good spot!
We really do have stunning countryside in the UK don’t we? Thank you for showing us and for another wonderful vlog.
Never apologize for grumbling especially when you have good reason to
And yet another bit of entertainment. I enjoy each and every one of your vids.
Didn't anyone else notice the boats name at the 2:40 mark. It's "Arch Stanton" and it's painted next to "Unknown". Fans of the Clint Eastwood movie The Good, The Bad & The Ugly will get it.
good eye! bravo!
"So, let's just take a few moments to just chill". Brilliant! Glad you are enjoying your summer cruising, despite the increased traffic.
Good idea but I think a scythe probably has to move faster than 4mph to be effective! ;-)
How can anybody think that lovely vlog defeat thumbs down?! They need to take a fresh look at themselves!!!
I do enjoy the travelogues very much. But I wonder how popular a "day in the life" video would be? When do you rise? What do you eat? What daily maintenance items do you go thru when moored or before heading out? How long do you warm-up the engine? Do you make a thermos of tea or stop and put on a kettle? How do you go about planning a voyage? Do you check the internet for issues at gates or call ahead? This may sound mundane but the details are sometimes very interesting.
I've shown the daily maintenance and engine start up before and I do little planning, just glance at the map. There's really not much to show.
David is noted as liking a cheese sandwich.
A fine mooring spot there at the end. And a little tip I learned as a youngster on grand longings , "want in one hand and poop in the other, and see which one fills up faster! " dream BIG,sir. Great vlog!
I look out my window and see overgrown grass... But I have to cut it... Is it me or are you sounding a bit sick, Please keep the vids coming its my fix. ;-)
Thank's Dave, a very relaxed way to to spend 15 mins.
Of course a gaggle of GRP boats is a Tupperware party.
way back in the 70,s my wife Jane and I used to hold the sports car sprint record at Curborough just up the hill from Fradley .
Your cruises are the best. I love that you keep your videos music free and we can hear the birds singing and the water lapping the sides of the boat and your 'hellos' to other boaters.
The engine in the Xebec @8:45 apparently is a 1948 Ruston & Hornsby 2 VSH engine (www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/register/2958/xebec)
What a lovely relaxing video, thank you kindly sir.
Fans of spaghetti westerns should take note of the boat name and other details on the classic-engined boat at 2:42.
"Idiots...it's for you." Meaning me, I never would have caught that. Thanks for pointing it out.
I was scrolling though thinking “ I can’t be the only one that knows who arch Stanton is!” So thanks for making me feel less nerdy
11:53 those trees although overhanging the cut were just marvelous as the cast their reflections over the water. Breaking up the man madeness of the canal and making it look so natural. I do see you point about the grasses obscuring your vision around bends whilst also stopping a proper mooring site, but again, it looks so delightful. It's a price i'd be willing to pay. Nice little cruise in the sunshine Dave.
Sure, that's the "African Queen" engine!
5:03 love the green on the shed. with each video you post i feel I'm becoming a judgmental connoisseur of backyard accoutrements
Quite right too
Not sure how I got hooked on these vlogs but I seem to be obsessed watching them...do dogs ever swim in the canals?
Yes, I see a lot of dogs jumping in to chase sticks etc, though owners need to understand that an oncoming narrowboat cannot stop quickly or change direction easily so they shouldn't let their dogs jump out when a boat is coming else the dog could get a serious whack, it won't just bob out of the way like a duck can.
@@CruisingTheCut Thank you for your reply...I have now successfully completed all 208+ vlogs. I really have enjoyed each one.
@@pameladstephens Don't tell me the ending! I'm still binge watching, but I have to sleep sometime... zzzzz -Phil K. Indianapolis USA
@@pameladstephens Congratulations! I've only got up to 184, but I reckon I'll catch up with you in the next couple of months. They are all so good, aren't they!
David, Thanks for sharing your adventure. It's very peaceful and relaxing to watch your videos. I live in Minnesota and like to look up the locations on google maps to see where you are visiting. Makes me want to come over and try it out for a week or two. Have a good day!
I feel your missing the potential of those tall Reed's, you could get a jolly Roger and ambush smaller boats from it!
The abundance of oil and gas coming out of the ground in Texas is enormous. I worked for a company that used one cylinder engines to pump gas to refineries. These one cylinder engines sounded like the vintage engines in your boats. Ours were enormous. Sixtyfive horsepower on a single cylinder. We increased the hp to 300 horsepower turning a generator for a pig farm.
With the top guy at crt earning over 220 thousand...thats where money goes!
Wow
Wow so relaxing. Seems there is need for some overgrowth management on the canal. But at least you can cruise your way through. Enjoy your videos immensely. Take care in your travels.
With many of us paying 1000 pounds a year for a canal license.. Plus monies from marina's etc CRT do very little to keep trees and weeds in check. Check out the Stratford upon avon canal, overgrown (always on bends) and poor lock maintenance.
Karl I was on this today and must agree it was overgrown. Hopefully the plants will but cut back.
I think it's more that they have way more to deal with than the funds to do.
I thought the excess canal greenery was looked after by volunteers with the difficult stuff, trees say, by CRT itself.
However, it may be that access to private land is an issue too. Perhaps some of these private landlords prefer to keep their side of the canal overgrown to deter mooring and unwanted visitors poaching or worse, viz dumping stuff on their land.
I have seen old tyres and even lengths of 2" diameter electrical cable dumped on private land not that far from my moorings.
I'm grateful this opportunity is available for so many people
Oh to be rich. Then you could buy one of the lock keepers cottages and moor your boat next to it... Oh that would be the life.. :) Great video David, thanks for keeping it up.
"Imagine the varnishing", looking at that boat, the varnish is imaginary.
Thanks for letting us tag along. I really enjoyed it.
That mooring at the end was very nice, indeed.
Happy Camping
I love the plug, plug, plug of the old motors. Are they the hit send miss type or something else...?
Managed to run aground on that overgrown bit of the Coventry last year. There's quite a lot of shallow patches around the overgrowth too.
Travelling opposite direction to you, near those canalside cottages around 3:55, moved a bit too close to the reeds and grasses to let another boat past, and next thing I know, the front was in the mud, with a bit of a lean to Port, to boot.
Nothing that a healthy squirt of reverse and shifting around of crew-members couldn't fix and get us off, but quite a few kitchen drawers and cupboards came open and gave us a shock!
If I was narrow boating, I would like to explore the towns and villages along the route by bicycle. Can you just dock along the canals and do this without a struggle? Just going down the canals without exploring the surroundings areas seem dull after a bit.
It would be nice to see some of the shops you visit.
Yes it's easy to walk around or go by bike.
Respect to your steadfast style and wonderfully simple commentary. I can still enjoy this after quite a lot of alcohol.
You've mentioned not getting around to writing a book on canals and narrowboats. Have you considered not writing fiction such as Murder on the Canals, or Murder Most Narrow?😄
I am indeed writing my book but it’s non fiction. There are lots of canal murder mysteries already.
Relaxing and peaceful. Thanks for the pleasant videos.
David... Your videos are normally over 10 minutes long.
I don't think your regular viewers would mind if you dropped in an advert half way through.
I for one would support increasing your ad revenue.
Maybe ask your viewers what they think 🤔
I hate the ads in the middle (as a viewer) so I'm not going to put them in. I already turn off the overlaid banner adverts as they're really annoying too.
CruisingTheCut Thanks David love the flow of your clogs, adverts are best left for the television.
I applaud your honesty and integrity.
CruisingTheCut Thank you David. We the viewers truly appreciate it.
lovely video, relaxing to watch even with the grumpy old man grass rant.
How come you drive on the left side of the road, but on the right side of the canal?
'Cos rules is rules.
Rules of the Road (sea road) have always been that way (drive boats on the right).Darned good question tho'!
I was just wondering that myself.
I believe it's a world wide boating rule same here in Australia
Please see my website FAQ page, cheers
Hi there. Brilliant brilliant brilliant vlog. I am around 3 years behind you. Been looking at boats since January. I have taken much information from you (and your sisters in arms ......... London boat girl etc !!!!), including the length, as i was about to view a 70 ft boat and wasn't aware it wouldn't fit into some locks !! Thank you for that one David.
Anyway, windsock at 9.47 is for the airfield behind the horses. Keep the great vlogs coming and i'm looking forward to the book.
"opium fields of staffordshire" one of these days I'm not going to be paying proper attention and end up retaining one of your fibs as god's honest truth and regurgitate it at the most inopportune moment
Hahaha I really do hope so.
Or the sheep given by Henry VIII.. we few we happy few
Another super video, gorgeous scenery.
David, I am a new subscriber from America and just fascinated by the narrowboat. I guess my first question will make you laugh, but when you stop to go to the store to buy food and such, how do you keep your boat from being broken into ?
You lock it!! Like a house, shut the windows and lock the doors.
@@CruisingTheCut , Thanks David. the locks on most of our boats are pretty weak. LOL
I do enjoy your videos. They are put together wonderfully. Just the right amount of you. Perfect amount of commentary to keep it interesting. I love the bow shots the best, and side shots to enjoy the countryside.
