Two years ago, I was with my father, and we were rear ended by a drunk driver. We were stopped with our lights and turn signal on, and we were trying to make a left. A drunk driver was traveling around 30-40mph when he plowed into us. He never slowed down. My dad's old 2001 Honda CR-V was totaled, and he is still facing neck and back injuries TO THIS DAY. This vehicle is very important, so thank you for informing others to possibly prevent this scenario from happening to others.
Hi LGwasherFan - Thank you for your comment. And so sorry to hear about the crash. Yes, the very unfortunate part about being rear-ended is that vehicle occupants often sustain soft tissue injuries. And those types of injuries do not heal. And owing to this many people suffer long-term chronic pain. My prayers are with you. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you so much! In a way, it was partially a blessing in disguise. I now care deeply about vehicle safety ratings and safe driving habits. As a result, I've found your videos and have started watching them. (I can get my permit in 2 months, so I'm working to learn as much as I can). Thanks for the quick reply. God's peace!
Hi LGwasherFan - Thank you for your comment. And yes, although painful, many of life's lessons are there to simply be seen if we choose to look. Gool luck with your study for your permit - have a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/PvsWqgZ11ow/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Speaking of "sitting duck", i encountered this Prius driver ahead of me that had a good sense of driving skills. We were doing about 60km/hr in the rain and all of a sudden i saw his brake lights and hazard lights came on. I then braked accordingly while he moved over to the shoulder. It was then that i realized that traffic had qued, and sitting duck at a 60km/hr zone and rainy weather. I moved over also and later thought to myself of what a nice way to communicate the dangers ahead so effectively. Kudos to others who drive like this.
Another good point is that if you are being tailgated by another driving drop your distance to the vehicle ahead even more thus giving byou more room to brake in an emergency situation if the driver ahead breaks suddenly, now that you have a car right on your rear end you need not only the space to be able to stop for the car ahead but extra space so you can stop at a slower rate of speed. Also slowly down will encourage the tailgater to pass.
Hi Chris H - thank you for your comment and most excellent point. It's almost as if I was saying the exact thing - brilliant. Yes, it seems odd that to prevent yourself from being rear-ended or tailgated you increase the space in front - it initially seems a bit counter-intuitive, but it is the best defence against both being tailgated and rear-ended. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Wouldn’t it be nice if this were true? No, what it does-in a situation where you have a real jerk, usually one with a much larger vehicle-is make the driver tailgate even more closely while shouting obscenities, blinking lights/high beams, and acting as if s/he is going to crash into you. If you’re on a two-lane road or in heavy traffic and cannot change lanes or see behind you enough to pull off the road or to safely change lanes (because now the jerk in the raised pick-up is blocking all three mirrors), then what? 70% will go around, but it’s that other batch of boneheads that I find disturbing.
It drives me nuts whenever I'm in line at a red light and there's a car behind me approaching, only to hit the brakes at the last second and nearly plow right into the back of me. People seem to have the same bad habits on the road I've noticed. Probably because they got it from their parents as well as social pressure. If everyone around you is doing 5 over the speed limit, you're gonna start doing it or else you'll feel like you're holding people up.
Great tips. I was rear-ended for the first time at a red light by a driver distracted by his phone. There were cars all around me, so there wasn't much room to avoid the crash. Perhaps turning on the hazard lights or pumping my brakes and leaving more following distance could have prevented the crash. Thankfully it was a very minor crash, but very irritating.
I have been playing racing games for almost a decade before I drove a car for real and riding bicycles for almost all my life. And playing a racing game, just like racing in real life, you gotta check your mirrors a lot. Almost 50% of the time or more. Its a very good habit which translates well into regular driving. Seems like the last 10 years playing video games haven't been wasted at all! Also, being on two wheels requires one to be incredibly alert with everything around you. Pedestrians, cars, motorbikes. And you soon learn not to assume anything in traffic. I'm always ready for anything to pop out suddenly. A person may come out suddenly from a blind corner, someone may suddenly dash out between a row of parked cars or a car might suddenly reverse out from an alley. In fact, all this time on 2 wheels has made me a much safer driver on 4 wheels. Very good video btw, thanks.
Hi 212809 - thank you for your great comment and compliment. Little doubt, there are transferable skills from both the video games and riding a bicycle. I too have ridden a bicycle lots, and and you are much more careful when riding because you simply can't make a mistake. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Tahm Wretch - that is bloody brilliant news - thank you so much for letting us know and for your really awesome comment. Be sure to take some time out to celebrate your awesome achievement. Hi ,I just want to say thank you .I failed twice in my road test but the day before my 3rd road test I've been watching all your videos and i learned a lots.I just want share my happiness that i finally got my driver license :D.
Hi clearance finder - that is bloody brilliant news!! Thank you so much for sharing your success. And thank you for your great compliment. Be sure to celebrate your success, but it sounds that you have. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best with your newly earned freedom. Hey Rick, I'd love to see a video about pressure from other drivers and how to not allow oneself to give into that influence. This is a big problem for new drivers, especially in places like LA. Maybe a video about social driving and how driving has become a forum for aggression. Just an idea.
Hi Christian - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and your great suggestion. I will definitely put that on the list, because as you said, that is important for new drivers. All the best, Cheers Rick
That’s a problem for everyone, not just new drivers. I call them road bullies. Thing is: you can hold to your guns on the issue, but you may find a batch of batteries hitting your windshield or an ice cold soda smacked on your driver’s side door. There really is no right way to deal with it other than to get a front and rear dashcam and hold your own.
I rear ended someone yesterday :( we were merging onto a highway, I was shoulder checking to check for gaps I looked forward and noticed the car in front of me had suddenly braked. We were on a slope too so my car slid right into him. I knew if I was going to get into an accident it would be there, it’s such a stressful merge for me and I find looking for gaps and shoulder checking so stressful. I’m 100% at fault because it could have easily been prevented by me, so I’m trying to learn to do better. Luckily no one was hurt and we just pulled over.
Hi Esther Batycki - Thank you for your comment. Car crashes--even minor ones--are upsetting. At one and the same time we're happy to hear that no one was injured and everyone was okay. Could you send me the address where you had your crash? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Esther Batycki - Thank you for posting your dashcam footage. Do I have your permission to use the footage to make a video that will help both you and help others? I'll put a link in the description for your channel. And I want to stress to you that your crash was not your fault. You can't blame yourself for for not knowing something. The reason for the crash is advanced and takes many drivers years to learn. All the best, Cheers Rick
Absolutely, I was hoping for guidance in this situation because I find driving on the east west connector so overwhelming because there's just too much for me to watch out for (going north bound is just as terrifying). Priority for me is to not get hit by a bus!!! But the more I know, the less panic I experience. Of course my father is furious with me, and everyone (including ICBC) agrees it's my fault. In the end I was the only one who could have 100% prevented the bump. After all the driver in front of me did not rear end the car in front of him! Someone mentioned to me that even though the guy stopped at the merge (which is annoying) you never know why someone will stop - someone or something could have ran on to the road and you need to be prepared for sudden stops. I try to keep my distance as much as I can, but forgot that on a slope I need more time, especially if I needed an extra second or two to scan. I've had so much anxiety since starting driving, that I was worried it was inevitable I will get into an accident... but I'm just so glad that I stopped in time that it wasn't worse and nobody was hurt. I want to learn to drive so smart that I can prevent as much of an accident as I can. I really appreciate your videos thank you. @@smartdrivetest
I just got rear ended this morning. A young lady was too busy looking at her phone and didn’t realize that we were stopped at a red light. No brake light or flashers would’ve stopped her because she wasn’t looking up. Luckily the fact that I practice the tire rule it didn’t knock me into the truck ahead of me. She was going about 40/45 mph. I basically need a whole new back end, muffler and everything. Her hood was crinkled up like a tin can.
I got rear ended by a tow truck on a congested highway with no free lanes to get around. Luckily, I ended up with some whiplash and a minor concussion, I was driving an SUV which absorbed most of the hit. It's crazy how many people are not focusing on the road.
You cannot always avoid a rear end crash because if the driver is having a stroke or changed lanes without making sure the traffic isn't stopped in front it's not possible
Hi Defensive Driving - Thank you for your comment. And only if you think it's NOT possible, is it not possible. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I had my 1st accident yesterday because: Driver rear ended me because he was impatient in the left lane. He sees that a truck behind me is leaving a huge gap so he accelerates but fails to notice that everyone has slowed down in the middle lane because it's rush hour. I hate when people assume the lane will move faster in traffic because a truck leaves a huge gap.
Hi Defensive Driving - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. And sorry to hear about your crash. I assume that you didn't sustain any injury. Keep in mind that vehicles can be fixed, people can't. If it was just a bit of damage, then it was a good crash because you walked away my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I rear ended someone in Traffic. I couldn’t brake In time as it was on the highway. the driver in front slammed on his brakes. It was my fault and I should have given more space. So here I am trying to learn from my mistakes.
I was rear ended in September of this year. I was preparing to stop at a traffic light when I was hit by a Jeep who in turn was hit by a BMW SUV. Nobody was hurt, just damage to our (my) vehicles.
One of the things I do is when I am the first person to stop at the light I keep an eye out for a car behind me and sort of “flash” my tailight as they approach to get their attention. Sort of like pumping the brake a bit. just so they notice that red flash. and also I NEVER get in front of a semi. If I know one is behind me I get in another lane.
My vehicle was savagely rear ended by a truck in 2012 ---a hit 'n run---while I was driving. My car space-shot across the opposite lane and into a rock wall. A neighbor just happened to be traveling two cars behind mine, and watched the errant truck driver speed away. Neighbor called police and ID'd the truck. Half-hour later, my boss coincidentally came across my totaled and abandoned car after paramedics whisked me to the hospital. My boss met me at the hospital...I was almost killed, suffering head and face damage. The key was having working air bags and sufficient insurance coverage--for under-insured drivers. I went on to work another couple years, but retired early via a spectacular settlement. An aside, my lawyer had been appointed to me by my wonderful company owners. He became a judge during my rehabilitation and several years later, I was relieved from jury duty because...I knew him, the judge. Always pays to be nice and fair to your employer.
Hi Kathryn J. Hernandez - Thank you for your comment and great story. And you are correct my friend; people will always respond in kind. We're happy to hear that you were compensated for your crash. All the best, Cheers Rick
Been rear ended a couple of times..... First time I was stopped at an intersection and checking my cross traffic to head off..... Unfortunately the driver behind me was trying to just roll the stop and hadn't realized I had stopped..... Luckily it was at slow speed so the damage wasn't severe, but it did happen..... The second time I was stopped for a good while in a turning lane for a good while..... It was on a downhill though and the vehicle behind me did attempt to stop, however his brakes failed and he ended up using me as a brake..... After all was said and done though all we had to do was head off just past the turn and exchange information and my vehicle got repaired........ Sometimes the crash is just unavoidable, but main rule in that instance is remain calm
Hi Christopher Rosas - Thank you for your comment. You're correct my friend - remain calm. Also, be sure that you secure the vehicle before getting out of the vehicle. All the best, Cheers Rick
Two questions. 1. Could you do a video on how to defend from other distracted drivers.? Almost all videos are on not being a distracted driver. This video is good defense for that. 2. Are there other strategies?
Hi Saiful Abu - Thank you for your comment and compliment. And you are most welcome. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you for this video! Ive been rear-ended twice already due to stopping in the red light. My question is, where is the "point of no return" when it comes to yellow light? Im very anxious with traffic lights now.
Hi A A - thank you for your comment and query. I'm working on just that video and should have it up in the next week or so. When confronted by a yellow light know that no vehicle will stop in its own length. Therefore, if you're farther than 1 vehicle length from the light you should stop. If you're closer than one vehicle length you should proceed. And it takes a bit of practice too, and these will become easier as you gain more experience. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Neustocks - thank you for your comment and compliment. I'm glad that you use these techniques - they are invaluable. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Michael St Clair - And you are most welcome. We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I was rear-ended. It was at night and raining. I was in the slowest lane, driving within the speed limit. I was alone in my lane. there were no cars behind me for miles. Suddenly my car was hit, spun around, and dragged several meters before it stopped on the shoulder. The traffic began to approach and pass my accident but The car that hit me was a few meters behind me with minor damages and the driver was not hurt. I miraculously survived with a concussion. my car was totaled and it took me 2 years of litigation, some compensation, and savings to replace my car. I am from the Caribbean. I still have nightmares and only drive for essential purposes. I no longer drive at night or on wet roads.
Sir, I am from Ohio and I am your big fan. I always like to watch your videos and really good and i have some questions: 1) How to make perfect right turn in small road? 2) How to parking a car between two car? 3) I need to make Ohio Driver(BMV) license but i don’t have any known person for who have valid driver license with going BMV office with me?
I was assigned to my first duty station Ft Hood Texas back in 1992. One day I was driving off post and for reasons I am not able to recall at the moment I slowed down to make a u turn heading back toward Ft Hood. Traffic wasn't that heavy that day though it had been raining. All of a sudden I heard tires screeding behind me and the rest is history. Driver hit my rear bumper and spun me into a 360 . Fortunately, no one was injured thank God. Odd thing was there was very little damage done to the back end of my car. Just a few minor scratch marks on my rear bumper. I think it was due tot the fact that he had caught me at the moment where I started my turn and that what helped lessen the impact/damage on my end. However the front end of his car was a mess. That was the first and last time in all of my years of driving that I have been rear ended. Though I have had close calls here in Florida. Thank you for sharing these educational driving videos. Even for seasoned drivers I feel it is a good refresher. We tend to get ta little too confident behind the wheel of our cars/pick up bad habits. Now with mobile phones its made our roads/highways that much more dangerous. Stay frosty out there and thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us! 😁👍
I was rear ended on a highway about 6 months ago by a drunk traveling at over 100 MPH I saw him coming and due to his speed, in the little time I had I tried to avoid but he matched every move a made. Any tips in that situation? I have been trying to regain my confidence and get back on the road but the constant fear of people behind me proves difficult. I do practice all of the lessons in this video but am still finding it hard trust drivers around me.
I have experienced someone who was malicious. These people are less then .01 percent of the drivers out there. The people in your story or mine. In my case, the car in front of me was doing around 20mph on 45mph two lane road. When legal, with no on-coming traffic. I gave my signal and went to pass. The slow car, picked up speed. So I slowed down to pull back behind him/her. He/she slowed back down. Matching me move for move. I couldn't get back into our lane. Speeding up and slamming on the breaks. Dropping my speed down to 5mph. Other driver would not let me over. On coming traffic appeared around the bend. I made the decision I'd rather ram this car then hit a truck/let a truck hit me head on. (Large personnel vehicle truck, not a commercial truck). When I attempted to ram the other car. They slammed on their breaks. Took a nose dive. Allowing me back into our lane. Whew, yet still shaken. Not sure what the oncoming truck driver thought. But he/she noticed me in the lane and was costing down in speed. Had he/she not been paying attention. It may have ended in a three or more vehicle crash. People are out there. Drive a car that scores high on the crash tests and drive defensively. I know it's not wise. We recently purchased a Toyota Yaris. Low crash rating. I know it's not wise. Especially, for passengers. That is what drove me to seek out defensive driving education. Thank you for posting these videos for free. I thought I was a good driver. Some of the points made. I had simply never considered before. I now feel like a new driver all over. So much to consider, remember, pay attention to while driving. Breaking bad habits is hard. I appreciate your videos and feel with practice. I will be a safer driver because of them. Resulting, in the increased safty of those around me. There is no telling how many lives your free education has saved. I will share these videos. Thank you.
I was rear-ended while stopped at a red light at the end of a line of cars by a “driverless” car. He was reaching for something on the floor of his vehicle. I hit the horn, he popped up, and slammed on his brakes. I used the space in front of me to lessen the impact but also to prevent hitting the car in front of me. There were cars to my left and right preventing my escape from the lane. Although it looked like my car was fine from the outside, I knew by the lump on my head that it was a hard hit. There was almost $2000 dollars of damage to the crash absorbing structures under the flexible fiberglass shell of the car. If I hadn’t forced him to pay to fix my car and was rear-ended again, my kids and I would have sustained significant injuries according to the body shop that fixed my car. Don’t allow someone to convince you there is no damage based on what the outer shell of your car looks like. Don’t let them drive off without getting their information. Let your insurance company determine if there is damage.
Hi Robin S - Thank you for your information. You're correct about car crashes. The vehicle may not look like it's damaged, but as you said, it's better to leave that decision up to the professionals. Be safe my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Milton Raj - thank you for your comment and compliment. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

I was rear ended once 2 summers ago. I was driving at about 90 or 100 on the highway and I saw the traffic has stopped. I got very close so I stepped the brakes super hard and I got rear ended but the day of the accident I didn’t get hurt that day.
Hi jdjck4 - thank you for your comment and compliment. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I drive from Minneapolis to Chaska M-F 4p-5p. 25 miles. I stay in the right lane and typically drive 30-40 mph, but I don't need to use my brakes. Everyone passes me, but I see their brake lights over and over. Also the last stretch is 6.5 miles and typically everyone who passes me in that stretch, is waiting at the light at the light. I get 40 mpg and my driving is typically only during rush hour. Toyota Corolla 2009, 150,000 miles. Stay right, stay reasonable.
Hi Kyle Card - Thank you for your comment. It sounds like you're doing it correctly my friend. Yes, one indicator of a smart driver is minimal brake use. As you said, when other drivers pass you often they're on and off the brakes all the time. And the other thing that smart drivers aim to do is drive in the spaces between the clusters of vehicles. This video too may help out: ruclips.net/video/gMCE9CJtFdw/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest yes, I find myself in those frequently. Offer 3 or 4 'waves' typically overtake me in a given commute. I wish I could talk to Google or someone and get video of my commute from above and show the impact 1 car can have. I've postulated that if 10% of drivers drove this way, we could eradicate stop and go traffic.
Hi Kyle Card - Thank you for your reply. Space management is the key to driving smarter and greatly reducing your chances of being involved in a crash. Unfortunately, many drivers do not seek advanced drivers skills. Keep up the awesome work my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
I wasn't rear ended but my grandfather was. He was the first and only car at a stop light on red which was on red for almost a minute... A truck was coming down the road and smacked right into him. Trunk of his car crumpled up to the rear windshield. Turns out the guy was texting and never seen him. (meaning if my grandfather wasn't there the guy would have blew the light and possibly would have been a much worse situation. Luckily my grandfather who knew he couldn't move in time was able to take his foot off the brake so the impact wasn't as bad as it would have been if he would have been resting on his brakes like you normally do at a red.
Hi Kathleen Grant - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Was rear ended years ago I was driving a older Crown Victoria was waiting to turn left - stopped with left blinker on waiting for car coming opposite way to go by as it was going pretty quickly and I had my children with me so I was waiting until it was safe for me to turn and a SUV slammed into the back of the car - buckling up the trunk I believe she was going about 40 - 45 and had drank some . We were all okay except we did go to be checked by a chiropractor I went several times for my neck , my Son twice and our Daughter was a baby in her car seat asleep and I had her also checked by the chiropractor. We were moving some stuff and our Grandmas china set survived the crash. You may have already talked about this but how far back from a semi truck should a person stop at.
Hi Teresa Koff - Thank you for your comment. And we're so happy to hear that you and your family were okay. With any vehicle, you should stay back so you can see around the vehicle. Just to clarify, are you talking about in traffic, or is the semi backing? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest Yes in traffic - if you are at a stop light in traffic and you are behind a semi how far should you stop behind it . Thanks for answering .
Hi Teresa Koff - Thank you for your clarification. Stop back so you can see the tires of the vehicle in front making clear contact with the pavement. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I've been rear ended twice - once by a car that a pickup truck hit and pushed into me and another time by a car that slid into me. That time the rear wheels of my van lifted off of the road. My wife was also rear ended by someone talking on their phone. I myself have hit many people from behind, but that was while driving a demo truck in the hit to pass races at our local speedway and they had it coming to them, lol!
Hi Tim Davis - thank you for your comment. I'm glad that everyone is OK, and yes that distracted driving, I suspect causes a lot of rear end collisions. And you got a bit of a revenge streak there with the ole' demo truck thing going on! Too funny. All the best my friend. Cheers Rick - God Bless
I was hoping the video would address being rear-ended while at a red light, which happened to me twice within one month last year. The second guy stepped out of the car like a Manchurian candidate, in a complete daze. 😱
Hi ramsey553 - thank you for your comment and request. Yes, I can do that. I'll work to get it up in the next fortnight. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. all the best, Cheers Rick PS - see this video: ruclips.net/video/6WbYpgn6T4c/видео.html
Hi Noelle Kurien - Thank you for your comment and query. I believe you emailed me this request and I asked you to give me a call. All the best, Cheers Rick
Great advice. I live in congested Los Angeles California and most drivers in general but I've notice V8 Truck drivers I mean F150 , Silverado etc//. In particular tend to stop really close to the rear of my car which for once I drive standard and uphill I need a space just because the car might roll backwards. Anyways I for onece do like to leave that space in front of me just in case I need to move. I liked your advice over all for highway and city driving. Great advice I hope some drivers out there would be get this knowledge too its for the best.
Hi M6 H2 - thank you for your great comment. Yes, unfortunately to many drivers stop too close to the vehicles in front. And I always tell students that they can control the space in front, and there is good reason for that. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
Rick, thanks for this video. It’s very helpful. I am already using some of the techniques. What do you recommend to avoid being rear-ended when the car behind you is tailgating? I am really struggling with this in The Netherlands. It appears that the maximum speed here is the considered the minimum speed. On my way to work, there's a VERY curvy road. The maximum speed is 70km which I drive, but there is also someone tailgating me. On Tuesday a BMW passed me honking his horn. They are not supposed to pass there. It was a very dangerous situation. I am on edge due to the fatal accident I saw on the highway. I really don't know what to do. Yesterday, someone was so close, I went on the roundabout really fast because I knew if I braked she should hit me. They flash their lights. It's a nightmare! Do you have any recommendations or a video I can watch? Thanks a lot!
Hi Val S. - thanks for your query. This video should help: ruclips.net/video/HABPPIUhIIE/видео.html You need to focus on what you're doing. I know it's tough, because horns are really invasive, but you can't let other people rattle you. Were you able to get in to talk to someone? All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick, yes, I did. I am still very shaken, but getting better. At least now I am not re-playing the accident all the time. I still have horrible flashbacks. Tomorrow I will drive on the highway. I think this will be an important step for me. One of the things she said is that this will increase my awareness on the highway and avoid the type of situation that caused the accident. She’s right! I am very aware of my surroundings and do not drive side by side with another car unless it’s traffic jam or slow speed approaching the traffic light. On the motorway I stay away from other cars. I follow your principle “if there’s nothing around, you won’t hit it”. Thanks for checking.
I was sitting to turn left. Third car in the row. We started to all turn when a pedestrian started to cross out of no where and we all slammed on our breaks. A guy was flooring it up the road to catch the light. Did not stop and crashed into me so hard it pushed me into the car in front which also went into the car in front of him. The side doors on my van like popped out a bit. Car crunched up like an accordion. I watched him in the rear view mirror as he came flying up. Didn't look like he knew we had stopped. Just had to make that light...
Ive been reAr ended 5 times 3 of them where drunk drivers. MY CAR HAS BEEN TOTALLED 5 TIMES. THE LASt time july 12,2020 . On the highway trying to get off ramp to 75 here in ohio. I seen him comming up fast i was able to manover left and i pressed the gas but he was going so fast that he still creamed the right side but nobody eles was hit or hurt... AS of 2021 im seeing driving like I never have... im terrified on the highway people drive excessively fast. I don't know how many "close calls" ive had but something must be done. I found that honking the horn and flashing break light help. And sometimes Ill just honk a few times just to make sure everyone is paying attention 😊💁♀️
Ended up getting rear ended today in my brand new car (day old) the car in front of me had did not have back windows so i could not see the brake lights of the car ahead of him and he suddenly jammed on the brakes. I managed to stop in time along with the car behind me but the car 2 cars behind me did not stop at all and ended up pushing the car behind me into me. The side shoulders were very very small so I couldn’t get over even if i wanted to and there were cars moving quickly on the other side of me. I feel like there’s nothing to be done in these situations as I was forced to make an emergency stop and could not safely steer myself out of the incident. Do you have any advice for a situation like this?
One year ago right on new years day of 2021 I was on the freeway at a light waiting to make a left turn onto a main street. I was already at a complete stop and there were two cars in front on me, lucky I kept my distance do to my paranoia of this very thing. While I was waiting for the light to turn green I looked up at my rear view mirror and I saw a SUV exit of the highway ramp entering onto the freeway. I saw that the guy was exiting off the highway a little quick and I thought he was going to stay straight on the straight lane. Next thing I know I hear the sound of tire's screech and the guy hit the back end of my SUV. There was no damage to my car just scratches and paint markers from the dude's SUV and the right rear light for the blinker stopped working after the accident. Unfortunately it was a hit and run because as soon as the light was green I motioned for him to pull off to the next street so we can see the damage but when I turned onto my street I looked back up at my rear view and saw that he just kept going straight. Now I know y'all are probably saying why didn't you go after him. Because of how I had just gotten the car that very same day my car wasn't insured and there would have been no point of going after him. I was okay just scared me a little bit but otherwise I was all good and I'm pretty sure the guy behind me was good too since he drove off.
Hi sol1m - Thank you for your comment. And sorry to hear about your crashes. Did you sustain any long term injuries? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Question. Have you ever covered “waving people in”? Near me there are people who have the right of way but stop to “be nice” (even on state highways) and allow a person to turn left in front of them or merge into traffic. I was side swiped while sitting at a stop sign because of this behavior. There were two lanes to cross. One came to a stop and waved the gentleman in. He thought her wave meant she was telling him both lanes were clear. A man with no warning or ability to see the car pop out from behind an SUV doing 45 MPH swerved to miss the car but hit him with a glancing blow into me. I was in the front of a line of cars with nowhere to get out of the way. I’ve heard many examples of people misinterpreting the “wave in” and causing a crash. I refuse to wave to anyone. I stop to leave space if my line of traffic has stopped. I then make eye contact to let them know I’m leaving space but will not wave. Do you have any advice?
I tell drivers "never" to do it on a road test. And as you said, be extremely cautious if someone else waves you on. I get a lot of it when riding my bicycle, and it drive me crazy. I know that drivers think they're being courteous, but as you said, it makes other drivers and the traffic unpredictable. Unpredictability--in my professional opinion--is the root cause for crashes. All the best, Cheers Rick

I am learning driving in Vienna, Austria. I have a driving test tomorrow. In the driving classes, I used to keep a one car space in red lights as I learned from your RUclips channel. I believe too that it is logical to have a secure distance. But the driving course tutor ordered me always to have shorter distance and the reason for that as he said is to not create long line of traffic in the street. Which his reason is nonsense. When there is enough space between my car and the car before me, I find it easier and safer to move forward faster and clear the space for the behind cars when light becomes green. What is your opinion in this regard? Please, let me know. Thanks
Hi Sayed Yasin Hosainy - thank you for your comment and excellent query. Does Vienna have a traffic congestion problem? I advocate--a do myself--staying back one car length. You can always control the space in front of your vehicle, and there are a lot of reason why you should stay away from other vehicles, fixed objects and other road users. It is good defensive posturing. If you're too close and you want to get around the vehicle in front - you have to back up in traffic. Backing up in traffic, in any vehicle, puts you in a dangerous position. My opinion is to maintain space in front. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test I do this, but other drivers get very upset, gesturing, honking, going around and jumping into the space... I have to remind myself that the angry driver would be angry, no matter what. They’ll always find a reason. Thing is: these people can be VERY dangerous, esp in LA (gangsters, hoodlums, sociopaths, et al).
Hi Infinite - thank you for your comment and request. Could you tell me where in the world you are, and perhaps suggest an intersection where you think you'd do a 'U" turn? That will help me to make the video and tailor the information. All the best, Cheers Rick
I'm in Colorado, USA. I'm not talking about any specific intersections it doesn't really matter. Just want to learn how to do a proper u-turn on any intersection or street. Thanks!
Early morning, continuous rh turn(Over a small rise!)from a side-street onto a large boulevard. I came to a Stop on a Yield because i was used to driving it when it was busy,a guy came up and around the corner at about 35mph and nailed me. He got out and asked if i was ok,i said no and dialed 911,about 30secs- minute later i looked in the mirror and he was gone,no plate,my fault but sort of his as well. The police gave me some kind of ticket(for being a dumb-ass?) but it was Not impeding traffic, tough lesson.
Hi Robert Senecal - Thank you for your comment and story. Sorry to hear about your crash. Yes, it's tough to get the details of the other driver when you've been injured, or you're simply in shock from the crash. Hi Rick, thank you so much for your videos about various aspects of driving. I watched most of them. I have a 'G' driving road test on 23rd June 2017 in Ottawa. I am sure your videos will definitely help in passing my driving test. I have a question. You suggest that we should have a good distance on the read behind the car. While in left turn lane, the lane is small. So if you maintain good distance between cars, a lot of left turning cars can not be accommodated in the lane. So is it not a good idea to keep less distance in left turn lanes as the left turn green arrow is for a short period? I observed in USA that they maintain little distance between the cars as opposed to Canada. Thank you for your videos. They excellent source of information for the new drivers.
Hi vgummi - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome for the videos. I took my driving instructor's licence in Ottawa with DTSM. That is an excellent question and there are different school's of thought. I always stop back so I can see the tire's of the vehicle in front making clear contact with the pavement. That gives a good distance to drive around the vehicle if something goes wrong. And I've never had an issue. On the other hand--as you stated--other's believe that you need to move as many vehicles through the intersection as possible. However, there is debate about whether that happens better if the vehicles have space or there are more vehicles packed together. I would go with the former. For your licence however, be sure to take a mock road test, and go with the information from the local driving instructor. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you Rick for your reply and advice. I am taking local instructor for mock test. I will update about my road test once I know it. Thank you so much.
Hi Rick, I've been watching your videos for months now and I have some concerns regarding what to do in situations like vehicle's brake won't work while driving, what to do if you got Tyre punctured.. And how to deal with such scenarios to not get confused any more
Hi Abdullah AlSebahi - thank you for your comment and query. In this day-and-age it is unlikely that brakes will fail. All braking systems are divided into two independent sub-systems - if one fails the other will continue to work normally. And tires are robust and rarely get punctured. The easy way to deal with a puncture is to get local automobile membership. For a couple hundred dollars per year you can have road side assistance. Otherwise, learning to change a tire is fairly easy. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Thank you. Yes Changing tires are easy but I meant in case they get punctured while driving fast in the highway some old driver friend told not to hit on brake till the vehicle stops otherwise you will lose control and in worse scenario it may flip..
Hi Abdullah AlSebah - my apologies for the late response. The comments here can be a bit off! First, if you keep good tires on your vehicle, it is unlikely that you're going to get a puncture. Second, due to advances in power steering, suspension components, and tire technology, there is a very low risk that you will lose control of your vehicle if you do get a puncture. I disagree with your friend - you can use the brakes, and just bring the vehicle to a stop in a safe location and repair the tire or call road side assistance. If there is anything else we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Mr. Rick, I know this probably a dumb question/ scenario, and it's probably no real method behind this but how many times do you turn the steering wheel in order to turn into a shopping center, and corner. I don't know, I think it just me but I have a tendency to count how many times I have to turn the steering wheel to turn a corner of something. I hope I made sense. lol
Hi Stasia Lopez - apologies for the late response. ruclips.net/video/L4DkGGJKzlE/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/BN_JL3A_ftk/видео.html Thanks Cheers Rick

Hi Ladonna - you're writing to me on YT, so everything, I suspect, is okay?!? Did you see the other vehicle coming? How did you avoid the crash? Thanks for your comment. All the best, Cheers Rick
Rick all is good. Thanks for the concern! Yeah I hold my breath and say a prayer at the same time...it works! I was on the I-55 bridge going into Memphis from Arkansas it is a two lane one way freeway, nowhere to go and EVERYONE is stopping short, I tap those breaks a lot, there is a concrete barrier to keep you on the bridge, they have had some awful pile ups in that long cage...lol! I leave at least four car lengths...get honked at a lot! Doesn't bother me.
Hi Ladonna - yes, keep that distance in front. You can always pull up if you have space in front. I'm glad you're good. Yes, we always say a prayer when those near-misses happen. Tank care my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Leaving a space in front of you makes sense but in rush hour anyone can cut you in the front and can cause accidents because we see many impatient drivers these days.
As I say my friend, if someone wants in, just let them in and they can go and have their crash some where else. Protect space in front at all costs my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi A - you are most welcome my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Little doubt, there are transferable skills from both the video games and riding a bicycle. i remember being rear ended, back in 2014 , the lady that rear ended me said she was changing her radio station, luckily it wasn’t major accident..

I have a Driver Ed student who loves these videos, please keep them up!!!!
We will my friend. Where in the world are you working? Cheers Rick
I had my 1st accident yesterday because:
Driver rear ended me because he was impatient in the left lane.
Hi Michelle South Florida - those are smart defensive driving habits my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
Do you honk

Sir, I am from Ohio and I am your big fan. I always like to watch your videos and really good and i have some questions:
1) How to make perfect right turn in small road?

I was rear ended once 2 summers ago. I was driving at about 90 or 100 on the highway and I saw the traffic has stopped. I got very close so I stepped the brakes super hard and I got rear ended but the day of the accident I didn’t get hurt that day.
Great job on an extremely important topic. Well done!

Great tips!!

Hi Rick can you do a video about wheel control for beginners
Hi,
Can we use this video for our training. I need permission from you so that the legal department will allow me to use this.
Smart Drive Test If i allow 2-car spaces in front of me, somebody will always overtake me and get that space.
Agreed! The pick-up truck drivers are the worst!
I was okay just scared me a little bit but otherwise I was all good and I'm pretty sure the guy behind me was good too since he drove off.
thanks

Hi sol1m - we're happy to hear that you weren't seriously injured. Stay well my friend.

Hi Samuel Kingston - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
The distance is also good in case the front vehicle stupidly puts the vehicle in reverse.
Can you please do a video on how to make a proper u-turn? Thanks in advance!
Thanks!
Hi Infinite - thanks for getting back to me. I'll get that up for you within the fortnight. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Big$MoneyBoss - you are most welcome my friend. I haven't forgotten about your gap video! 80)
I hope I made sense. lol

I was plowed into by a vehicle going in excess of 80mph while traveling at 45-50mph while following my nephew at only 3 1/2 car leangths i did not see the rouge vehicle till my sister yelled to look out i had about a half second to clear the road i vearred right and hit the accelerator both to get out of the way faster and to decrease the velocity diffrence between us they were going so fast i and my acceleration so slow i did not clear fast enough and was hit in a glancing blow that made my car bolt forward and our velocity increase as my car went off the road i got my foot on the brake and gave it quick taps to slow us without locking the wheels it was working to a big degree till we went four wheel airborne as we struck odd terain when we touched down my car began to roll two or three time where my sister shielded over my youngest nephew saving him from possible ejection but was herself ejected from the vehicle and crushed by it as it rolled over her and killed instantly our roll was halted by an asphalt laying machine where the passenger rear tire came to rest on her head and upper torso all my passengers including myself sustained little to no injury except my sister i dont know what I could have done better but either way i lost my precious sibling early sunday morning pronounced dead at the scene at 3:10 am i dont know if any of this can help anyone but its my horror story of how my dearest sister lost her life saving her son and my soul all at once shes my hero may her glory and honor be forever remembered
My sister was rear ended at a 4 way stop. The lady was doing her make up.
I was rear ended by a guy who launched his Maserati into my Saturn...
