I’m not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I do most of my own work. I’ve been doing my own brake jobs since the late 80’s and I’ve always thought I did a pretty good job.But after watching just 1 of E’s vajeos, I feel like I’ve learned more than all of those years put together. E you do an outstanding job and personally, I’ll never stop watching your brake shows. Heck I’ll watch every one you put out. ALWAYS entertaining and I’ve never not learned something.

This was the first video I watched of yours as I have a 2014 ATS we bought in 2022 and have been a fan ever since.
Also have a 02 Intrepid 3.5 which we bought in 03, 07 Grand Caravan SXT bought in 08 and a 2012 CTS bought in 2017.
So I am obviously one to believe vehicles are worth repairing.
Even though I have had a tranny rebuild and AC system/heater core replaced on the old Intrepid averaging out the repairs since 2003. It comes to an average of $35/month cost of repairs. Well below any car payment. Have studied and learned to paint in my garage as well as doing some repairs and your videos are a great help.
Your videos have been great to watch and learn from.
    Thanks for your content.

Between Eric O., Big Clive, Adam Savage, and a few others ... I've been inspired to just get in there and do things.
I've ripped the inside of my car apart to properly wire an amplifier, power and remote lead down one side under the carpet in the wiring path, RCA cables down the other side similarly; taking apart things in the dash to replace the lights with leds (changing the color from that pale green to blues and purples, adding in resistors), learned to solder thanks to Clive, and Savage making me want to just make or modify things.
An extra special thanks to Eric O. though; because I noticed after watching so many of the videos, the process of thought in both diagnosis and the problem solving, I've found I am naturally thinking more in that line myself, better at helping others problem solve, figuring out what is wrong, paths to take, and just being more creative with things. The covid thing has gifted me more free time to pursuit those goals and now only does the accomplishments feel better, I'm actually decent at these things and thinking of a few opportunities when this is all over. My car started rough idling and I managed to figure out the EGR runners were clogged, cleaned them, and she's running like a champ ... though I don't feel confident enough to be poking at my valve adjustment; if only Avoca wasn't 17+ hours away; but tempted because Mr O is such a honest guy some of us wish we could patron his shop for all our repair needs.
Thanks a million. You may never realize or hear from most of the people you make a positive impact in their lives. From inspiration to restoring faith in humanity by being such wonderful people. I bet quite a few people tune in to the videos when they are having a crappy day and the slice of your life is enough to help and bring a little light upon the world.
Take care and best wishes to you and yours.

We west coast boys get cars that are 25 years old and the fluid is nasty, that's why we open the bleeder when we push the piston back, lots of the time we flush the brakes. On cars as young as you see, we don't worry about the fluid much. I'm really hooked on your channel. You are good and entertaining too! Keep posting buddy!

One last comment. After 30 years of driving I only buy OEM pads. They may be more expensive but they last twice the mileage, about 35,000 of normal driving. At least here in Long Island, NY. Aftermarket pads are just a waste of my time with excessive brake dust, squealing and less than 18,000miles. I also highly recommend the coated or painted factory rotors. Nothing like a shiny new brake job that looks all rusty in a month! Keep up with the awesome videos Eric. I truly enjoy watching.

Hi Mr. O, I was a Certified mechanic during the 60s, 70s, 80s, I always used safety first, with mask always while during brakes inhaling brake dust. I see most of the times you do not wear mask, or eye protection, which in fact damage your health in the long run. You are a great mechanic I am sure Mrs. would like for you to continue to be safe. I always used a C clamp to push the piston in. I also checked for any fluid leaking around the boots indicating that the piston was leaking. Sometimes a little ridge builds up in the cylinder and screws up the seal as it gets dragged over the ridge.
I've been using motorcycle chain lube on the battery tray slides in the motor home. I may need to give Fluid Film a try.
Guess I missed the brake cleaner reveal. I'm sure you didn't forget it :)

Compressing the caliper pistons. Way back in the '90's I did brakes on an 86-ish Chevy pickup with Kelsey-Hayes ABS. When I was done, the ABS light was on and the pedal was mushy. Then I found out that lots of people were having that problem. I also found out that nobody knew how to fix it, not even the Chevy dealer. Then I heard that it was because I compressed the caliper piston without opening the bleeder. That was in 1993. So ever since then I have been cracking the bleeder and using a screw driver before I even un-bolt the caliper. That's just the way I do it now. If you're not having problems doing it the way you're doing it, then great. I'm STILL going to crack the bleeder before compressing the caliper. It works for me, so I'm going to keep doing it.

I've not seen your videos before (yes, I live a sheltered life) so I was looking for a bit more explanation on such things as cleaning up the the caliper grooves where the pads slide. I've not done that before on the half dozen times I've done rear brakes on other cars (and those people didn't get charged for my time, either, so they got what they paid for). I just needed a little more filling in of information with the reasons each step was being done, as redundant as it might be for you. As it is, I loved the video even though you probably guessed I didn't. Yeah, I'm easy.

I live in the U.K. and I guess we have all the rust symptoms that you have. When changing the brakes I have got into the habit of loosening and then tightening the bleed screw on the piston, not to bleed air but to ensure that it does not seize up. Years ago I had the formative experience of twisting one of these off. I used a screw extractor that true to form unhelpfully snapped off inside it and then spent about two hours grinding the whole sorry mess out with a Dremel chain saw grinding bit. Once bitten, twice shy, I also put a collar of silicone grease around the base of the bleed screw threads.

Why the heck would anyone criticize a guy who has been doing this stuff for a donkey’s age and is the best mechanic on RUclips. I’ve been working on cars since the mid-70s and I learn something from EricO every time I watch SMA.
One thing though - there wasn’t a single instance of the Brake Clean sound in this video and I did miss that.
PS - I also like the wheel bearing videos. Hearing the big ugga-dugga gun and Big Nasty is cool too.

its not aboot the job, its aboot the personality! I just bought factory workshop manuals for my 2007 mkx and the image is a giant C clamp pressing the piston in with the old pad. Fluid film is magic potion!

Right on man! I just found your channel, and love it. You remind me of every guy I've ever enjoyed working with, funny yet know your trade. I appreciate that you show what an honest competent mechanic looks like. Not a flat rate speed freak, but worth every dollar a customer pays you for good reason, quality not quantity. Love your dialog/narration, FUUUUNNY and real! You're not afraid to show simple little day to day mistakes, gun set wrong direction, wrong socket, shameless plugs for free products, etc. All the little gremlins that a true professional in this trade faces. Been in the industry for 24 years, and have done better for myself than most of my friends that went to four year institutions of higher learning, AND by far had more fun. Keep up the good work and keep making these videos. Be well brother!

HaaHaa Seems the RUclips AI closed caption reads "Welcome to The Semi Auto Channel"... Guess there getting pretty good at reading between the lines Mr.O? Here's a good one..
My neighbor sneezed and said "I shouldn't have taken that cruise" he is NY native and a COP here in Fl now! Great guy, almost as funny as you Eric. Almost...
Thanks for everything you do. Wishing You, Mrs.O and all the Family the best.

everytime I see you use that file to get the rust off on the caliper bracket and I know you have a blast cabinet I just think why. I would love to have a blast cabinet. I hate rust and I love the way to blast cabinet cleans It off
