Leica Summicron. Are they enough for high resolution?

  • Sometimes enough is enough. Take out the preconceived ideas of perfection that the RUclips community convinces you you need and then lenses like the Leica Summicron line just may be your perfect option.

    Smashing bit of kit there - forgive the Londoner in me, LOL: I do wonder at some channels I have seen zooming in to corners, finding something to compare to something and no real-world use stated for it. You do wonder how much some of them know. Your pics here really did pop with something delicious and are a pleasure to view. Many prefer to criticise others, not daring to show their own work.

    I love your no-nonsense content: subbed! And you're spot on about those summicrons. I shot studio portraits on my M-262 with the 50 and the (non-apo) 90, and they are beautiful. Nowadays, I shoot Fuji GFX and Canon professionally but since most of my work isn't printed large, I could definitely use that combo too.

    My first Leica lens was the 50 Cron - like many other folks - and I’ll never get rid of it, despite acquiring a Lux and Voigtlander APO since. It’s just so good for what it does.

      Last Summer, I used a friend’s Summicron-M 50 (v. 4) and APO-Summicron-M 50 lenses on my M11 and SL2. Their renderings were sufficiently different (but both were high quality) that I could see having both (or two similar non-APO and APO lenses).

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Год назад

      It’s just a classic lens that you kinda want to hold on to for that alone. But the quality and rendering are special.

    I think more knowledge about lens resolution as it relates to sensor resolution may be appropriate here. See Lens Rentals Roger's excellent work in that area for a better understanding.

    I understand that you (and the rest of us) don’t always need high resolution, and that Leica kit is expensive, but have you compared the Leica Summicron-M lenses to their Voigtländer APO lenses?

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Год назад +2

      Really don’t have to. The Voigtlander APO Lanthar 50mm is a near perfect lens that is far superior. Sorry, just had to duck from the Leica gods and their lightning bolt almost hitting me.

      @@kaskoPhoto I love Leica kit, but you won’t get any complaints from me about your liking Voigtländer lenses!
      I have no problem mixing and matching M glass from different manufacturers and appreciate what each lens can do. I haven’t tried the Voigtländer APOs yet, but their Nokton 35 mm f/1.2 VM I offers a nice soft vintage look and the Nokton 75 mm f/1.5 VM is a lightweight and compact fast short telephoto with very good optics, so both were keepers for me. I had tried the Voigtländer Super Wide-Heliar 15 mm f/4.5, Color-Skopar 21 mm f/3.5, and Nokton Classic-M 35 mm f/1.4, but sold them. They were reasonably compact, but at the time, I didn’t appreciate their über-vintage performance. However, I might reconsider them in the future.
      I tried a TT Artisans 50 mm f/1.4 and wasn’t fond of it. The new close-focusing Leica Summilux 50 kills it.

      @@johnkasianowicz6536 well the 50 and 35 APOs and the 28 and 35 Ultron IIs are my favorites. And like it or not can more than hold their own against Leica.

    Would you say that summicrons have more of filmic look to them on these high resolution sensors such as the M11’s?

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Год назад

      I think that is a fair statement. You can see that they are sharpe but just a little less resolution and not at all clinical. Really just a pleasing look

      The 50 lux asph is my absolute favorite lens on the m11 mono, but when I am going for a different look I reach for the 35 asph cron and blown away by it looking like a modern film file would look if it was digital lol.
