Keep it simple!! Great content John. Thanks for sharing. That set up is MONEY!💰
Appreciate you watching - and commenting as always.
That's the point. I always talk about the good, quality lighting. Easily level up any camera and lens, totally different noise levels at any ISO, just an another level of image quality. And don't need more, than a speedlight, and an umbrella (same go-to setup for me). And than, my friends go out, and buy the newest, "best" camera... and do the same bad quality photos under the same bad quality lights.
It’s the theme - everyone forgets lighting.
Thank you for all the good advice from a pro.
I ordered the MagMod MagShoe v2, because it seems really great
and i like quick and easy, but quality.
You will love it
Such simple but incredibly effective lighting. The results are superb.
It’s really simple and almost fool-proof
Great video - I watched it twice. I like the idea of portability and keeping the lighting system simple and easy to use on the go (which is my case most of the time).
This is a nice setup for that
It's really a great thing with simple capabilities that produces great images.
It is. I’m all about simple with great results
Thanks for the encouragement of getting started with just an umbrella.
It’s a great way to start and very forgiving light.
I share your love of umbrellas. Also prefer reflective umbrellas for being efficient and retaining more flash power.
My first lighting modifier was a Glow 40" White Umbrella with Removable Silver/Black Layer from Adorama. The combo was magical to me. Had the softness of the white umbrella with the crispness of the silver. Best $14.95 I ever spent in photography.
Finally upgraded to an Angler ParaSail Parabolic Umbrella (White with Removable Black/Silver, 60"). Same white and silver layers.
Along with the larger size, I liked the shape.
There’s a demo video on RUclips where it showed the ParaSail umbrella could be turned sideways horizontally and fit in a small conference room.
I was sold on that flexibility to shoot in tight spaces.
You could get a nice downward angle even if a ceiling is relatively low.
Curious to see the video about your new umbrella. I know you said it’s a white reflective, but if I could find a compact portable trifold umbrella with white and silver layers, I’d pounce on it.
Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for sharing. I’ll def get that video done on the white reflective soon
Amen on the importance of good lighting ❤
It’s amazing how so many don’t realize it.
Another great video John!
Thanks, appreciate you watching!
Another great video my friend!!! Like you I have lot of high end lights, and like you I will always pick the right tool for the job. But lately I have been forcing myself to train with the Stella Pro Reflex S, I what I am discovering its the simple things like a umbrella or Mag mod sphere that I can produce beautiful light that is good enough for head and portrait work. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the video with silver umbrella .
Thank you so much, I appreciate your input and comments.
I've been watching and enjoying your videos for awhile. I mainly do sports photography, but would like to get into portrait photography. Your videos have been very helpful. On a side note, I live in NEPA and, just today, realized that connection.
Small world! I shot sports for many years. NHL, NBA and pro baseball. Loved it when I was younger. It’s a young man’s field.
A great explanation of why you don't need to spend thousands of $$$ Great images as always. Your videos are a real highlight.
Thank you so much
Great video. Thank you so much for the help you give to beginners like me. Much appreciated!
I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment
Another good video! Thank you! 🇨🇦
I appreciate you watching! Hope you are keeping warm.
@kaskoPhoto snow just stopped, time to blow! 😊
@@marcthibault8723 it was sleet and ice here all day. Finally stopped as well
@kaskoPhoto You guys are lower than here in Ottawa! It's probably a little warmer also!
Great instructional video. At 17:42 you say you are shooting in manual mode, no TTL, but how are you taking exposure readings for correct exposure, as you seem to be moving the flash around a lot, but don't seem to take exposure readings?
Thanks for sharing another great video.
Thanks for watching!
Great Vid....very grounded ....... I'm inspired
Thank you so much. Appreciate you watching.
I hope the next video will be about what are the basic tools can help me to have a studio in my home and be able to make some money
Well, honestly, this is a good start. A second light would be great for a hair light and separation.
just got back from imageUSA in Dallas, it would be super cool to meet ya next year in Nashville 2026 Jan.
I may be there
I love your video. Can you please share the company that makes sure white background supports
Look for Westcott X-Drop Pro. amzn.to/3WTBUdz
Hi John.
Do you ever use two umbellas together for clam shell lighting, speedlight up into a reflector that bounces down into a shoot through?
Enjoy the rest of your day.
I haven’t. It sounds like a nice easy setup.
15 years ago - every video with Joe McNally seemed to keep umbrella companies in business all on his own ... Annie L seems to know a thing or two about the humble brella too. I always keep a tiny one in my bag - had to use one for a talking head video a few weeks ago after I gut stuck in a tiny room without enough room for my softbox
They will be around for a long time
That flash is the nissin i60a.
Yes, I believe I said that in the video.
Do you have any concerns with the Magmod and Sony brand flashes? I am always concerned about mounting the Sony HVL equipment on stand mounts as the hotshoe mount on Sony is so delicate with the exposed pins? I appreciate you, your work, and your channel.
I’ve used the Sony flashes for years on these exact mounts, never an issue at all.
@@kaskoPhotoThank you John!
Do you crop your pic in post production? Tnx for the another nice video
I crop to format only. 4/3
Agree :)
Thanks for watching as always.
Hi! I’m an amateur with the Godox V1. The only times I’ve used it seriously was at a wedding, a couple of office events, and a cosplay event. I’ve also dropped my V1 about three times at about a height of 4-5 feet. Thankfully the V1 appears to be modular, so that it breaks apart, but doesn’t break, when dropped. The coldshoe feelt that came with the V1 is only good for putting on flat surfaces or mini-tripods. I really do want to upgrade to using reflectors and modifiers. But realistically, I only do see myself doing events. That being said, should I get the Godox S2 bracket or the Magmod MagShoe? I get the impression that with the MagShoe being made of plastic, it can handle only lightweight setups? PS would this really tiny tri fold umbrella work for events?
I like the Magshoe but that does depend on what you will connect to it. It handles larger softboxes without a problem (MagBoxes) And if you are doing portrait setups at events it would work fine. But if you are using this setup to light a room, bare flash.
@ thank you!
@ Thank you!
Hey @Magnetmod , sponsor this man already woudja?!?
😂 I don’t have to be sponsored to love their stuff.
@ true, but it couldn’t hurt 🤞🏾
Hello, what focal lenght you normally use for such sessions?
50mm is my go to
@ on a full frame?
@ yes
Which on-camera Godox flash would you suggest for someone who does events? Should I put any consideration into Profoto?
I think for events you need a backup of everything- so I’d say go with the V100s as you can buy two and a X3 remote for less than a single A10
Do you have another backdrop under the white x drop pro backdrop ? If so, may I ask why?
What I love most about the system is that I can stack them on the fly during a shoot. I don’t have to take one down to put another one up.
@@kaskoPhoto ahhh, that makes sense, and keeps them wrinkle free. thanks for the response

Unfortunately, you are right 😂😂😂
😂😂 thanks
you cant possibly be suggesting that light is the key to PHOTOgraphy? PHOTO from the word greek phos, meaning light? I feel like if that were true the camera companies would be spending all their money on marketing because we already had good enough gear...
You’re right, the camera companies are way behind the times 😂
@@kaskoPhotothose evil companies that seem to always be receptacles to my “spare” cash?
I don't believe that a photographer really needs a ' great camera or lens' nor that great lighting is easily achieved Either n the studio or outdoors, otherwise everyone would have been Lindberg. More gear, more ligjting, more modifiers do not make a photpgrapher.
Very true
I waited first 7 minutes for you ending the gear advertising. Thumbs down
Sorry it wasn’t for you.
