- On February 20th, WestJet inaugurated passenger flights with their Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner between Toronto and Calgary, as preparation for launching their transatlantic flights from Calgary to London, Paris, and Dublin.

Has technology and/or innovations taking place, regarding NDE of composite materials? Issue has always been / still is NDE testing for cracks and fatigue in polymer materials, wings and even fuselage of 787's ! Specially in cold Canadian climate, are materials now guaranteed to last 28,000+ flight cycles ect? Still prefer how aluminum welds and riffits are NDE tested for cracks as part of planned Maintenance (on 737s ect). Gratz on new Airplane :)

Excellent video. I've nearer done a first flight but I'd love to. The 787 model is a very nice gift, that's another first. With as many first flight videos as I've watched never have the guests been given such a gift.

I was at work at YYZ when i saw this flight being pushed back, it was really cool to see the arrival of the aircraft a week or so to unknowingly witnessing its first flight.

I was working for Time Air (where a lot of the initial WJ folks came from) at the time when Westjet started out (1996) and the mantra at the time was "yeah, I'll give 'em 6 months". Looks as though they sure proved that incorrect :)

I flew from Toronto to Calgary on the Dreamliner, though not WestJet and I too found the seat back a tad uncomfortable. I felt that when I reclined the seat, the area at the small of my back, it didn't recline as far back as the rest of the back fo the seat. The quietness of the plane was wonderful. If I had flown WestJet the crew would have been a sure lot friendlier than the carrier I used.

Oh my gosh I’d love to fly in a Dreamliner. I saw one taking off at YVR once but I’d do anything to actually fly in one. It’s one of the fanciest and most beautiful airplanes ever made...

Thanks, Alex, that was fantastic. Probably the most detailed TR I've ever seen. Great to see the extra legroom seats. I myself am 6'3 and flying YYC-CDG in June in Y and was curious to see what real world legroom is like. Even at 6'8 the 35 inches of pitch didn't seem too bad. Did anyone else notice the ribbon cutting fail at 18:24? Cracked me right up! Great TR, cheers pal! P.S Am I right in saying the headphone jack is dual pin?

Yeah I can’t wait to fly on it in April to Toronto as well when I go back to Puerto Plata I hope WestJet starts thinking about South Pacific routes to like the Philippines Taiwan and Japan and to Australia and New Zealand flights soon
Starting from the 737s and ending up with ultra-long-range 787-9s for international flying...the times are changing (in a good way)

787 is an airliners dream..hence the name dreamliner. its mostly a composite material aircraft, less metal parts and way less weight. making it very fuel efficient and capable of travelling very far..
