      I wonder if its just a coincidence that the Chinese word for Korea sounds so much like the word "Hangul"?

    • @marc536
      @marc536 7 лет назад +10

      韓國 (hán guó chinese) = 한국 (Hanguk = 'Korea' in Korean) lit. meaning: 'empire of han'; 中國 (zhōng guó) = 중국 (Jungguk), literal meaning: 'middle empire'. As you see the Korean word for 'empire' 국 'guk' and the chinese one 國 (国 simplified) 'guó' sound very similar. As for 한글 (Hangeul): The 글 (geul) part has the meaning of 'writing' or 'character set' in this context. 한글 means therefore 'wrting system of the han empire (한국/韓國'). 글 has no chinese character behind it (maybe this one 書 but i am not sure as i find no references of it and the korean wiki page for 한글 also shows no chinese characters). so the sounds are comparable but have a really different meaning. i hope i could help an did not confuse you even more! xD

      Korean traditional word stems from old chinese letter. that's why it sounds like 'Hangul'. But those are clearly different words by the way.
      'Hanguo' = Chinese word which means Korea
      'Hangul' = Korean word which means Korean letter
