What do you think is the theoretical limit for an hour record attempt? Let us know in the comments!👇
He injected the tires with Lance Armstrong's piss, that's why.
Ganna just needs to beat Boardman and claim the absolute record.
299,792,458 metres per second
The drag coefficient isn't related to the size of the rider, but only to how streamlined he/she can get. Of course the frontal area has the same importance of the Cd factor but it's important to know the difference: a Boeing 747 has a Cd of 0.04, it doesn't mean that it takes the same force to push it as a bike
Someone will do over 60km within the next 20 years
The livestream of the Dan Bigham didn't show any data or lapcounter/time. This was really poor from a spectators point of view. What do you think about that?
Yes
we had jonny wale shouting the time split
The video crew missed their flight so they had to make do without
@@_zya_1783 interesting take
@@refthimos damn even a ig live woulda been cool. Also plenty of video crew to find. They just don't care
Regarding the Q-Factor at 8:00. A nod to Graham Obree who designed and made his own bike, with a narrower Q-Factor, over 30 years ago.
The Q factor should be optimised for the hip width and musculature of the rider. After Obree's records many cyles were built with much too narrow Q angle because this was not understood. This affects power output and can cause problems and injuries. I am sure Dan got his right.
Alex's laughter is infectious. 11:41
Great “hour” content. Really insightful. More of this kind of in-depth info please!
Loving the sheer level of detail you give in these videos.
thanks mate. glad you appreciate it
I'd like to see Remco try it, followed by Ganna, and then van Aert.
Imagine the same day, same velodrome. it'd be great theater, records or no, the big wheels dueling the clock.
@@robbchastain3036 You can add Victor into that battle as well, as I'm sure he wants some redemption/revenge. 😉
Thanks for Supernicing my Vitus guys! Made my week!
With regards to sizing I am at the top end for this size XL (I’m 192cm) and it’s very difficult for us human lamp posts to make our bikes look good. I’m basically the same as Casper Asgreen 😜 and take a look at his seat post/drop!
Bikes always look better in a Medium so thanks for giving me the SUPERNICE!!!!
Love the show.
P.s. if you want to look for my TT bike in the Vault and supernice that too, that would be great. 👍
If you go strava Stalk Gana . have a look at his Zone distribution. the upper limit of threshold (His FTP) is set at 518watts
Love when Jake is on with you guys!
He should definitely be there more often!
10:29 was that a Donut reference?!?!? My day is made :D
MO POWA BABEH
10:30 I love alex’s impression on James Pumphrey catch phrase from Donut Media. 🤣 #MoPowahBabeh
little easter egg! 😉
Foreshadowing for a GCN/Donut collab?
Did Ollie really get through the section about the hour record without mentioning his atempt at every given opportunity?
Ollie should get dropped on the next GCN lunchtime ride so he can sit alone in a coffee shop and reflect on this colossal self-promotion fail. Perhaps all his efforts are being poured into promoting shirts and bidons unpretentiously. :)
Once we train for months and then ride in a velodrome for an hour at our physical limit - it is only then we should have comments about others who have completed the task. Either then, or the day that typing comments becomes equally physically exhausting.
@@acl812 Yeah, I'm there already, typing sometimes knocks me out. So I think I know what it's like to be like Ollie in the velodrome, cruising around for an hour and then talking about it forever afterwards. 😀
They probably edited it out.
That was really interesting to watch. Lots of cool info. Thanks guys👍👏
I think Dan's record will stand for quite a while. Dan has a secret weapon.......that guy in the comments a while back that advised him to just pedaled faster, don't we all feel like idiots now 🤪
hahaha! brilliant! i’d forgotten about that!
@@oliverbridgewood3929 🚴♂️ 🚀
Alex is the naughty child in the class, "ribbed for Dan's pleasure?!" the other two just raising an eyebrow and loving the cda figures. Great show.
They are the old speedplay aero pedals. Unfortunately Wahoo still doesnt have the bearing design right on the new pedals. Hoard the original speedplays while they are still available old stock.
Nice to know. Got mine in 2008. Still going strong
Commenting on a comment of the week (inception): Ollie, Hambini said in his video released today that his hairdresser is also away. So my only logical conclusion is that you guys have the SAME hairdresser 🤔😂😂
Hahaha! I was thinking the exact same thing when Ollie said his hairdresser was away!
How many times did Olly push his theoretical glasses up talking about the hour record? #Ubergeek!b🤣🤣🤣
This was a brilliant video. And not just because Alex was in top form with the jokes
Good show, Guys! Keep it Light.... Lite.... Fun!
One thing of note - next year the uci rules for handlebar position are being relaxed. I'm assuming Ganna, being taller, may be able to get into a better position with the alterations. He looks cramped now to me, he's obviously doing just fine, I do think the longer reach will be helpful though.
And seriously the lack of data being broadcast during the uci record from Bigham was terrible. If he was recording all of that, show the viewers, they didn't even have up/down progressions by lap.
Thanks guys. Dan deserves that record for all his work on aerodynamics over the years.
Remember the debate about using standard equipment in track events to reduce budget differences among teams (specially the ones from underdeveloped countries)? This reminds us that even if that was the case, the budget differences still would matter when taking into account how clinical teams can get when evaluating and improving their rider's training and results given the sufficient resources to do so. Cheers!
Dan Bigham……great job!!! The research and testing the systems to evaluate the marginal gains reminds me a bit of what Greg LeMond was doing back during his winning years.
17:48 Jake shows PRECISE CRINGING like a gentleman. Well Done Jake, well done.
Thanks Ollie !!! Finally pronouncing Bolide right !
Alex revealing himself as a Donut Media watcher...
Ribbed!?!
“For Dan’s pleasure?!” 🤣🤣🤣 nice one!
I think we should have an Evenepoll on this
Best comment ever by GCN presenter goes to Alex…”for his pleasure?” If I had been drinking milk while watching that, I know the milk would’ve been shooting out my nose, I laughed so hard!
It made me happier than you’d expect that a Brompton got a super nice! There’s hope for me yet. *orders compressive cleaning kit*
Was that a James Pumphrey shoutout from Alex?
I died a little bit when they were talking about Ganna being a big boy at 83kg when I'm 100kg 🤣
12:27 aww how cute!
Alex thinks we can sort of do 450 - 460 watts for a WHOLE minute!
🤣🤣 😭😭😭
I have just switched to a tubeless setup on Zipp 303’s. I had my LBS set it up 2 months ago. I realize it is almost time to check/top off my sealant. I want to use Silca sealant going forward but I am unsure what the LBS put in my tires. Must I remove all the old sealant and start over? Or can I just top off with the different brand. #askgcntech
"ribbed for Dan's comfort" 😂😂
I'm just here having spotted all the text in the square brackets that hadn't been updated 👀👀😁
Funny how Ollie corrects Alex's pronunciation of Grenchen with an also wrong pronunciation. :D
😂😂😂🤦♂️
i think Dan will keep the record, he's the king of data! sorry Ollie your crown has been taken!
Oh boy, Hambini just declared, his hairdresser in on vacation. Hmm trend setting!
Ganna has some KOMs/top tens near my house from a TT during the ATOC. This dude was pulling 500+ watts for like 45 minutes surging over 600. I think he can set a really fast hour record, maybe even close to 60k an hour. Peep the segments between Morgan hill and San Jose and his ride- I suspect Gannas true FTP is above 500.
it it's very likely over the 460W, based on some interviews with italian media, but no 500W, that's too much even for Ganna
@@8paolo96 it appears that he has since removed his power data from that ride…
But the important question, did he pedal faster? 😂
deffo going in comments of the week!
The Coppard bike had the reflectors aligned but the tires were flat.
How to break the hour Record?
Start with a streamlined recumbent.
UCI surrendered speed and distance records to IHPVA long ago.
So what do we have to do to get Dan Bigham to ride an hour record on a modified Lotus 110?
ollie: asquilly-entess
0:56 "Ineos Grandiers" -- what the heck is that?
I so happy Ollie knows Recess!
The description 🤣
What crank length did he use?
Specialized actually did a WinTunnel study about facial hair and found it makes no difference. However, arm hair was a measurable drag!
brb, shaving my arms
A long sleeve skinsuit would take care of that, but then yes, you will 'cook' all that much more/quicker in the temps they need to keep those enclosed wooden bowls at to produce these records. ☹
I see Ollie still has his Uni laptop. Watch out for inventory checking! 😂
Hm, wonder what will happen with my Speed Concept SLR 9 that I have on order? Probably have to wait another million months for delivery :(
Ia have been practicing at the Aguascalientes velodrome, my natal city very nice and good 🚴🚴🚴🚴
13:52 is that Hank?
Looks like Dylan Groenewegen
@@michielvanderwal1276
Allright, thanks, was hoping to generate a Conspiracy theory.🤷😉
All that tech but still an amazing physical achievement by Dan. Incredible to think that Chris Boardman went further years ago, Superman still more aero than they can achieve with the rules today, or was Boardman a Superman?
both!
@@oliverbridgewood3929 shows the genius of Obree, inventing 2 revolutionary superior aero positions without the tech to prove how good they really were
okay so... hour record holder and not tubular? so... is it totally cool to use clincher or even tubeless on the track? someone please clarify this?!
cheers!
yep he used the new conti tubeless gp5000 tt
The original sewing machine, narrow Q factor, Ekimov. Makes me wonder what he could have done with modern equipment and science.
a drag coefficient isn't affected by your size. its a ratio.
Does anyone know what his crank length actually was?
Drag coefficient is always applied to the frontal area of the object in question. Ganna’s frontal area is obviously larger, but why is his coefficient necessarily higher? Obviously this still makes him overall less aerodynamic, but I’m not sure it’s necessarily to do with his drag coefficient?
it’s not just his height, but also the limb length, posistion on the bike and kit employed.
I would think long hair and a beard would act like a fairing, making the rider more aero.
Also trapping a thin layer of air close to the surface thus further reducing drag.
What size tyres did Dan use? Asking for a friend…
Bradley sold out tickets to the dome in what 2hrs?
Voluntary recall? O, must be for those snapped in two handlebars I saw on Luescher Teknik... Yeah, nothing to worry about.
I just cannot even fathom sustaining 300 watts for an hour. That's just insane.
When Wiggins earned the record he averaged 400 Watts for the hour!
Ollie needs to admit that he’s still tri-curious.
It's almost like being a "lab rat" whilst simultainiously pursuing one of the iconic cycling challenges.
I’d say Ollie’s barber has permanently retired since he hasn’t got it cut so long🤔😂
he gave up. was a lost cause
@@oliverbridgewood3929 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 werewolf Ollie
Royally stitched up... 😂
Anyone else think Alex has had some space cakes? 🍪🍪🍪
I think you’re confusing Cd with frontal area, the fact that Filippo Ganna is significantly larger than Dan Bigham, does not imply that his Cd’s automatically higher. An Airbus A380’s Cd is 0.022.
e.g. Fd=0.5×ρ×Cd×Af×V^2
i’m not!
My guess is he was naming the number for CdA in m^2. So Cd multiplied by frontal area, since you really need a fairing for a Cd of 0.15
Add a full chain guard and it will be 1mph faster.
How do you inbox GCN TECH???
Are riders allowed a suit that can control cooling during the hour record ride?
No
Aguascalientes its something like a-was-call-i-en-tes.
Who took the third wrench from the left
I think Ollie's trying to grow a POC helmet...
So boys where is Hambini! On Engineering?
Living in Canada I know for a fact that I have more power and am faster at +30c than I am at +10c
Re the new hour record holder, how does the drug testing approach work in a situation such as this, where the rider is not (to my knowledge) professional, on the World Tour and so on?
They have to go onto the testing pool to get the official UCI record
Anything higher than 6 watts per kilo is unnatural. When Greg Lamond won the TDF his VO2 max was 93. I will say that again so you're sure I didn't mistype it, 93. Greg never hit 400 FTP.
The direct opposite I guess would be like Marco Pantani's Alpe d'Huez record. With the right help there isn't to many limits on what the guys can do as long as their bodys hold together.
Well...you need to update yourself.
MVDP, Pog, Wout & co have changed things a bit.
They are in the high 7's for watts per kilo.
Armstrong was pumping out 6.3. Most of the top riders of his era were at 6-6.2watts per kilo.
#Ask GCN Tech.
Hi Ollie and Alex, maybe you can answer my questions?
I'm wonder if Ultegra 12s drive train: crank, cassette and chain would work fine with force etap axs derailleurs?
Cheers
Well done to Dan Bigham
Not throwing a spanner in the works .
There getting close to Chris Boardman record.
Today's science and tech still can't beat over 20 year tech
Finally where ye been all day??
and when you mention betty's and a fat rascal you almost got your crown back
Hmm, new doping scheme: remove your blood, cool it down, and re-insert . . . high in the mountains in the team's car.
It used to be legal
Let's face it on the track you really don't need to look up as much so neck muscules shouldn't be as bad as on an outdoor TT.
To those who got the doughnut mopowar baby I see you and you are amazing
If I'm not wrong Ganna is 1,93m tall, Bigham is 1,83. That's roughly 5%. So his A part from cdA should "only" be 11% higher, not the 16% Ollie is estimating.
It does not go up with size but with frontal surface area (square)... And power production is more related to body mass (cube)...
@@julmeissonnier yes, if Ganna could match Bigham's cd factor, his A factor and therefore cdA should be about 11% higher. The exakt numbers are related to the body proportions of both. In Aero Position a long back and short legs are beneficial, because your back lays horizontal anyways.
it’s not as simple as you make out, otherwise everyone would have a cda as low as dan!
@@oliverbridgewood3929 that's right. But the statement "best case scenario 0,18" should be closer to 0,172. That would be if Ganna could match Bigham's cd. And that's a huge difference watt wise
Getting to break the rules helped him a lot! Thanks!
64 x 14? What's the gear inch of that I wonder!!
I think I'll have a go......, I've got a natural "knee in" pedal action...... No special training necessary! 👍 🚴♂️, 🤔l
Ineos “Grandiers”
I assume they meant “Grenadiers”
Why is it no one has a left hand drive on the track bike? Especially when attempting to set an hour record. Is that a UCI rule? Having that mass closer to the center does will give an energy advantage. Simple physics.
bike with max head set spacers and high seat post, yea thats the right size... unfortuantely its a mistake to run spacers on a headset, the problem is most bikes the top tube is too long so ppl want to down size to stay comfortable without getting a stubby stem. but u still end up with a poorly set up bike. i'd rather have a shorter stem with no spacers and a slightly lower seat post
Can’t believe Ollie says he has a hairdresser, does she have a white stick and a dog 🤣😂🤣😂
Again a Shoe starting at 42 :(.
Is a size 40 for men that difficult to make :(.
Merckx set the hour. Which has yet to be beaten.
