LuPat is definitely more episodic than most sentai seasons, but I think it works well in their favor. It was Toei’s first attempt at the “two teams at once” idea and I think it was good for what it was. It had a lot of personality and I consider it in my top 5 easily

Well, it’s pretty justified as well, Noel was the one that reverse engineered all the collection pieces for them to be compatible with humans. But Noel’s true allegiance is with the Lupinrangers. It would make sense for him to do his best not to let the Patranger get anymore equipment.

Well, to be fair, you probably don't have to watch any Sentai from start to finish to appreciate Gokaiger (except for some like Timeranger, Shinkenger, and maybe even Gekiranger due to plot points in certain episodes) just as long as you're familiar enough with what the different seasons were about.

    • @SoraDonaldGoofy99

Gokaiger still works for the ones with a Power Ranger nostalgia as well, though I don't get any feeling for the pre-Zyuranger outfits or Dairanger (minus Kibaranger because Tommy), and GoGo V never had a Titanium, so that was a bit lost on me, but I still love it.

As I'm watching Lupin vs Pat at the moment, this was a pleasant surprise to see. If you're looking for a another Sentai season that's very character-focused and has some good action and drama, then I would suggest either Shinkenger, the season Samurai is based on or if you're willing to put up with hilariously out of place CG, Timeranger- which Time Force was based off of. Both are very excellent and easily in my Top 5.

Most Sentai recently have ended on a 'We'll continue the fight' sort of ending, and it is what you said. For future movies and specials. So more than likely there will be a LuPat vs Ryusoulger movie where the story of Lupins and Pats continues, and with everything else the last ten years. More than likely the LuPat will get an hour long 'Returns' movie to continue their plot. You have missed a couple of things in the movies/specials, but hopefully through the clues in the episodes you understood what you missed.
    1. Another Patran Nigou - It's a big of a Patranger prequel series of episodes. That focuses on the previous Nigou which you met throughout the journey, if you watched those two episodes then you would've known the reveal that Satrou was fake in the series earlier on. It's a nice set of episodes that give Kei more depth and Sakuya more drive.
    2. En Film - Features the first time the Reds have to work together and Jackpot Striker... before his reveal in the finale. He's basically another Goody, but if the Lupins use it they all merge together like Ugou.
    3. The Ultimate Bizzare Combination - I recommend it a lot. It has nothing to do with anything else in the series. It featured a ganglar that forces people to be connected together. So the Reds have to find a way to work together to beat the ganglar while being forced to be together.... literally. It adds nothing else but good humor and a great fight scene at the end.

Ryusoulger VS Lupinranger VS Patranger made me a little bit disappointed because The story of Lupins and Pats didn't continue. The Lupins were still thieves but they were kind of "we brought back our loved one and no need to try to collect Lupin Collection any more" and lived their normal life (which is hard to do so because the world had known their identity). The Pats just did their "police" job as usual but when they met the Lupins, they didn't try to catch them like before. In the end when the monster is defeated, the two teams just... talk and have fun with each other
Meanwhile Lupins VS Pats VS Kyuuranger was a typical VS movie, and it's fine to watch. The 3 teams worked together and in the end, the police continued chasing the thieves. But the Pats showed how much they cared about 3 Jurer employees, after the Lupins used the Trigger Machines to become the Patrangers

The story of that stage show immediately took place after the last episode and conclude some strangling plot points.

The thing with Sentai is that the movie's are part of the show, they are kinda like special episode's, exemple Jackpot striker was first shown in the first movie, and that movie then tide in to the final episode, it has always been like that in Sentai, another exempel is samurai sentai shinkenger in there movie we get to see the shark sword and the final power up for the red ranger, then they do a flash back in the show to that point later on in the show. This is somthing most Tokusatsu show's like Super sentai and Kamen rider do, they always tie in the movie's to the show in some way's, the biggest one to do so to date (if you ask me) is Kamen rider Den-O where you have to watch the movie's before you watch the last 5-10 episode's in order to understand what happend to the main character.

It's possible that the lack of information on Arsene Lupin is due to cultural knowledge of the character being assumed. Lupin is a French antihero character created in response to the popularity of Sherlock Holmes. Relations between France and Japan have been favorable for centuries, to the point that you can see Francophile influences in Japanese culture (Tokyo Tower, large number of French bakeries, the Lupin III anime), whereas America's more British leanings resulted in Lupin having far less of an impact here.

Here's a post I made on a Toku fourm halfway through Lupat. You sort of hit a point I made on the head in this vid.
"I will say we know as much about the Pats as we do the Lupins. There have been really good Pat exclusive episodes. We mostly know all of their backstories and their driving forces. We also know the people that inspired them. The difference is they didn't lose the people that inspired them the same way the Lupins did. They also fit their personalities very well and they all have a hobby/hobbies. All six has had an episode that focused on the people that inspired them.
    1. LupinRed has his brother, who inspired him to take up Basketball. Carefree cool/slacker attitude hiding some pent up anger. That's basically it from all of his centric episodes we know about him and his past.
    2. LupinBlue has his fiance, who inspired him to take up Cooking. Calm and stoic attitude hiding his pain and guilt.
    3. LupinYellow has her best friend (Maybe Girlfriend), who inspired her to take up Designing clothing. Joyful and Extroverted attitude hiding her depressed and introverted self.
    4. PatRan #1 has his idol, the officer who he aspired to be. His hobby is Music. With a hotheaded hardworking attitude hiding his over-caring heart. He knows he can't care about other things than his job, it will make him not work as hard on it.
    5. PatRan #3 (Who honestly should be #2....) has her grandfather. Who inspired her to be a strong independent woman who won't shy away from kicking a creep's ass. She collects plushies and has an serious attitude trying to hide the fact she wants to swoon over girly stuff.
    6. PatRan #2 has the other two Pats as his idols. He said it himself in the genderswap episode, he looks up to both of them and is excited every day to work with them. He is actually the only one of the main six who isn't hiding his true attitude. He is goofy, dim, and caring. With the ability to get serious when he needs to be. His hobby is shooting, even though he doesn't take it as seriously as the others take their hobbies aside from LupinRed. (Guess after episode 36 I can make an amendment to this. It seems #2 is hiding some depression. He is still Goofy, Dim, and Caring but that doesn't mean he doesn't sit at home alone being sad about not being as good as #1 or #3.)
I mean it might feel like we are getting more Lupin background episodes. It might be because they are more interesting. They even have the same amount of toys.
    1. They each have a melee weapon. (The weird sword, grabber thingy for the Lupins. The Batons with the megaphone for the Pats.)
    2. They each have the same amount of trigger machines and dial fighters. The count is at 6 for each. (Red, Blue, Yellow, Chopper, Jet, Magic) (#1, #2, #3, Biker, Crane, Splash) Both Jet and Crane being two machines in one. Jet, Crane, Splash, and Magic also give extra weapons to the LuPats. (Even X is equal. Two trains are Patranger themed, the other two are Lupinranger themed.)
    3. The only thing right now that the Lupins have over the Pats is Lupin Magnum. Which just premiered. With how the rest have been shown. There might be a Patranger Power Weapon coming soon."

Good review. I’m actually surprised you did this. But good to see you look at a Sentai show finally.
If I had to recommend one season of sentai, I’d choose Zyuohger. You might want to have some leeway with one episode though. (As it’s an advertisement for a movie for another show that doesn’t even have the Zyuohger in it. So you don’t have to watch that)
It’s a good show and it plays around with a video game gimmick with the suit designs and special effects. (Pixelates effects, Coins, etc.)

Neat seeing you review a Sentai. I love your PR videos. Actually I was five episodes away from finishing LuPat myself(busy busy), and saw you were doing a review and it spurred me to finally sit down and finish it. If you have the time, check out the movie and specials. They're fun, though admittedly really feel more like episodes of the show that were cut out but they do give us character moments which is always nice. Though yeah, they aren't necessary, aside from the movie explains Jack Striker but that's a minor thing more or less. My biggest complaint about the series is it has a neat concept and starts out interesting, then just coasts for much of it. Zamigo shows up, revealed his connection to the Lupinrangers, then is just...there sorta till the end and it's just bad. They also don't really try to make the Lupinrangers actually seem like "bad guys" to the point where they really worth the Patrangers trying to arrest. They could've sold it better by having the Lupins leave monsters for the Pats to finish off, or be careless with people and property maybe. I think if this gets translated to PR, they should be represented and vigilantes instead of 'phantom thieves'. It would really make the most sense and do better for the dynamic. But in LuPat's case, the trouble with that kind of undercuts some of the finale. Still a good series though.
As with others leaving suggestions, maybe consider down the road doing Go-Busters once we're further along(or finished) with Beast Morphers. Or even well before, either way. I know I'd be curious to see your thoughts on some of the Sentai that I've seen. You might even consider doing a new string of videos that compare the Sentai with PR in terms of how things like plot, characterization, etc etc work or don't work, which might accomplish things better, that sorta stuff. Those could be interesting, just a thought. Anyways thanks for the interesting videos, keep it up.

LupinrangervsPatranger is so good imo. its more character driven (with 6-7 main cast) n the growth for keiichiro is a welcome suprise. daily interraction between LuPat + X meddling help mellow keiichiro down, especially the interraction between kairi n keiichiro, it felt so real. the ending for this season was so satisfying (i cant help but cry more than a bit) for the twist(even if it was predictable). its one of the show that you need to sit down and watch from start until the end. but yea the big bad (esp zamigo n big boss) really take the back seat.

Hugtto Pretty Cure, Lupinranger VS Patranger, Kamen Rider Build and Ultraman R/B were the best Japanese superhero shows of 2018 so far even know Lupin VS Pat's toys has poor sales and Hugtto PreCure's stuff has small improvement sales including its best crossover movie gets its World Record for most number of magical girls in an anime film. Long live 2018! :)

I've been watching Super Sentai for a while now. Can I give you an advice? If in the future you'd like to talk about Sentai, i'd recomend Gokaiger. That would be a Starting Point about why Sentai is so great and why Super Megaforce failed so miserably.

This is actually so far my favorite season of Super Sentai, I keep hearing people complain about the whole "2 teams" dynamic, but I actually think they pull it off really great, also I gotta say, as well as Kei-chan & Sakuya became, I pretty much loved Tsukasa from beginning to end(I could never get over my original feelings of Keiichiro, as for Lupinrangers, And I loved their overall backstories about losing their loved ones to Zamigo Delma, but I can't decide between Kairi or Touma

Keichiro had a great scene early on. He took a direct hit from a great Gangler early on, got forced back, but caught a falling brick.
    Why?
Because there were civilians that would have been hit if he didn't.
It was that moment, that made me realise the Patranger's were gonna be great.
Also, I'd say either Jetman or ToQger for the next of these Sentai overviews, if you do another

I loved this show. I am more a Chaotic Good type of guy, so LupinTeam; but I enjoyed a lot the Patranger. And of course, you pointed out, the Patranger are officers, they fight the monsters and crime because it's their duty. The early focus on Lupinranger is needed to explain their goals and oath.
And Touma and Sakuya got the most memorable and absurd episode... (80's phantom thieves and animanga reference)

One of the reasons why i liked lupin over pat is the fighting style, while lupin was more acrobatic and wild pat was more strict and trained, for example like how lupin would do like b twists and kong jumps and side flips to get around, dodge, or attack pat would do a like a basic jump to get over a railing or basic but effective rolls on the ground to manuver out of the way, you know stuff like that

Once you are done watching like.. the last decade of sentai (or even more), do a seperat review of the Super Sentai Saikyo Battle (aka Strongest Battle) that was a 4 episode mini-series, airing between LuPat and Ryusoulger. It isn't an anniversary, BUT if it was, it would have been THE BEST anniversary you could ask for! So much nostalgia, references, old characters shining again, partly even better than in their main series, beautiful music, everything. Though it was a special mini-series, it was the most fulfilling thing in Sentai for the last few years.

This is also the first sentai that I watched from start to finish. I was always more of a Kamen Rider guy, sentai just felt more on the immature end of the spectrum. This show though. I was obviously drawn in by the premise. I wish the Patrangers got more toys to play with though... the Lupins got all the cool stuff. Lupin Magnum, Victory Striker, Magic, Splash, etc.
The pats made up for it with sheer relatability though.

I didn't give up on LupinPat (or... LuPat, but I've been calling it LupinPat all along, lol), but I dreaded "catching up" to the current episode and forced myself to stop when I got to episode 15 or 20 or so, somewhere in there, this past summer when they were only ten or so episodes ahead of where I was. Now that it's over, I do plan to go back to it and start all over again, because from what I did see, I was VERY impressed with. Glad to see based on this review that it didn't seem to lose its way along the way. Was the story the best thing about it? Not really, for the reasons you covered here. The "cops and robbers" element was fascinating to watch, and the Rangers themselves all seemed to be getting very good amounts of development. Granted, I haven't even watched half of the season yet, but it had yet to fall into a "wash, rinse, repeat" pattern that a lot of Sentais get into pretty shortly after the first handful of episodes as it gets into the habit of utilizing filler episodes to give each individual Ranger a focus episode or two before moving into pushing the actual plot of the season along (be it with the addition of extra Rangers, mecha, weapons, villains, etc.). Overall, I was saying LupinPat may be a dark horse candidate for a top five or possibly even top THREE Sentai season (Jetman and Gokaiger probably aren't moving from my top two, but... it was getting up there)
