  • Went out to a new section of the river in hopes of catching some big pike. Had a great day and landed some nice fish. Still getting the hang of the fly rod, but I'm quickly learning to love it and becoming much more comfortable using it.
    Fly rod: 9' 8wt Orvis Clearwater rod
    Reel: Waterworks‑Lamson Liquid Fly Reel

    Just a couple of things....I have been fly fishing and tying my own flies for almost 60 years (30 year professionally) and would like to give you the benefit of my experience. Before I do, I want to encourage you to keep on fly fishing! It is a life-time hobby and a rewarding one. First, why do you strip your fly line in while holding your rod sideways? It is not only cumbersome but many times will you miss the hook set because of the angle of your rod. Second, you said that a lot of comments had to do with getting your fish on the reel and I agree with them. You need to take them to heart because one of these days you are going to get a real nice fish on and your line will get all tangled up because you didn't bother to get the line reeled in before you played the fish. Practice on the small ones and be ready for the big ones. Finally, strip your line through your pointer finger and have your pick-up line run through your pinkie finger which will control the line as you reel it in. Good luck and keep fishing!

    • @peelindrag113
      @peelindrag113  7 лет назад +10

      Thanks so much for the input! I think the reason I was holding it sideways was to avoid trees above me. Then I must have just kept it side ways for part of the fights. I did try to reel in the line for most of the fish so I don't get tangled, but I'll definitely do it for any big fish. I really appreciate the comment though, I'll continue fly fishing for sure.

    Hey buddy good content...but wanted to tell you what kills the fish is putting your first gets in their gills like that. It messes up their gills plates and oxygen intake. If you release the fish don't put your fingers in their gills plates

    • @Zjudoransj

      Jesey Gonder it really doesn’t aslong as you don’t grab in the red part of their gills. It’s a common thing to grab a pike by the gills so do your research first

    How to fly fish.
    Change fly 400 times.

    Get fly caught in tree.
    Hook fish so small you don’t notice till it flies off on back cast.

      Not yet, I'm still very new to fly fishing for pike so I'm experimenting and figuring out what works best for me. Right now its just a 20lb RIO pike leader that comes with a wire trace at the end. The wire trace is what I'm still trying to figure out. The one I am using doesn't have the durability I'd like, but it still works.

      Peelindrag the pike tend to blow up the most on the edge of weedbeds and in the shade or on an overcast day, just as bass would. However i find theyve been more likely to hit the top water than the bass around here in Southeast WI possibly because of their agressive place in the food chain. You can certainly catch the fish I caught in this video on a 4 or 5wt. I have an 8wt because it allows me to throw larger streamers for pike, which a 4 or 5 wt would have trouble doing. With a lighter rod you'll just have to use smaller flies.
