- Went out to a new section of the river in hopes of catching some big pike. Had a great day and landed some nice fish. Still getting the hang of the fly rod, but I'm quickly learning to love it and becoming much more comfortable using it.
Fly rod: 9' 8wt Orvis Clearwater rod
Reel: Waterworks‑Lamson Liquid Fly Reel
I like how your small stream is a solid fly fishing river here xD
Great video Josh. You have a talent that allows the viewer to feel like I'm right there fishing with ya. Thanks for the entertainment, keep up the good work.
Just a couple of things....I have been fly fishing and tying my own flies for almost 60 years (30 year professionally) and would like to give you the benefit of my experience. Before I do, I want to encourage you to keep on fly fishing! It is a life-time hobby and a rewarding one. First, why do you strip your fly line in while holding your rod sideways? It is not only cumbersome but many times will you miss the hook set because of the angle of your rod. Second, you said that a lot of comments had to do with getting your fish on the reel and I agree with them. You need to take them to heart because one of these days you are going to get a real nice fish on and your line will get all tangled up because you didn't bother to get the line reeled in before you played the fish. Practice on the small ones and be ready for the big ones. Finally, strip your line through your pointer finger and have your pick-up line run through your pinkie finger which will control the line as you reel it in. Good luck and keep fishing!
Thanks so much for the input! I think the reason I was holding it sideways was to avoid trees above me. Then I must have just kept it side ways for part of the fights. I did try to reel in the line for most of the fish so I don't get tangled, but I'll definitely do it for any big fish. I really appreciate the comment though, I'll continue fly fishing for sure.
You’re an awesome fisherman! I really enjoy your humility and info you share!
I just ran across this video..ive only gotten small pike and pickerel on fly but they are super aggressive and fun...great video of the takes...fun to watch.
Stumbled on this video. Not many quality fishing videos here on RUclips. Plenty of good tying videos, but again, not many fishing. Awesome job young man!!!
Good lord I love stream fishing. This is a simply amazing fishing place and environment.
Great video, looks like a blast!
I hope this isn’t lost in the comment swarm, but I would love to show you some of my local waters and collaborate getting some Muskie or wild trout on the fly. Thanks and tight lines.
I’m local I don’t make RUclips videos really
good job keeping calm after the first miss on that pike! way to recover it!
Really nice river pike. I left a 👍
Thanks man! It's much appreciated.
Hi I was wondering if you could help me out I'm loving the videos and I have just bought myself a fly rod now I want to catch some pike on it over here in England. Just was wondering if you could give me some advice as to how to set up like type of leader or wire trace and what fly's you would recommend Thanks in advance
im just learning to fly fish and your videos make me want to go out and fish. You have a very optimistic attitude that caters great to youtube. Keep doing what youre doing!
Thanks Blake!
Thanks for the video it is always good to see a fishing video when i can't fish my self
It's the second best thing!
Keep up the good work! The videos are great, and you are catching some beautiful fish!
Hey buddy good content...but wanted to tell you what kills the fish is putting your first gets in their gills like that. It messes up their gills plates and oxygen intake. If you release the fish don't put your fingers in their gills plates
Jesey Gonder it really doesn’t aslong as you don’t grab in the red part of their gills. It’s a common thing to grab a pike by the gills so do your research first
@@Zjudoransj actually you are wrong
@@Zjudoransj you’re supposed to grab the outer flap on bigger pike, this guy is putting his hand way in on the small ones
I am really liking these pike/bass fly fishing videos. I'm new to it as well and it's really fun although quite difficult at times.
You got that right.. Definitely a big learning curve. But very addictive.
How to fly fish.
Change fly 400 times.
Finally figure out which fly they are biting.
Get fly caught in tree.
Hook fish so small you don’t notice till it flies off on back cast.
Sounds right
Lol sucks to be you.
fr sucks to be u, all u need to do is know what fly is hatching or hatched an throw it out there an know where to fish lol
I really enjoy the direction your channel is going.. different from all the other videos people are putting out.
Thanks Lauran! I hope to continue with this style!
That back handed roll cast at 8:40 looked really good for some reason. Keep it up👍
Really love your vids. Beautiful streams you fish. I fish for pike in the Baltic Sea, Finnish archipelago. Same flies same gear apply if you ever should visit 😉 My dream is catching a muskie.. 😁 It's good to dream. Tight lines! 🙂
That's a very productive stream. Keep it up. Nice video
Awesome vid Amigo! Just got my 1st fly rod. Only been out once for practice. Lookin 4ward to goin out more n more this spring in the Northern n Middle Rio Grande River. Thanks for all you do out there.
Love the new fly fishing videos. Makes me want to go out and get one now. I live in the Lansing area, I recognize a few places you've been. I'll keep an eye out for ya. I fish/ kayak the Grand most weekends.
Thanks for the feedback Mark! I'm hoping to hit the Grand a little more often now.
Just the video I needed to see. Gonna try to catch my first Pike on the fly later this week!
Good luck out there man! It's addicting once you get one.
Peelindrag Thanks!
I had one nice sized Pike on at the start of the season this year and the fight was unreal. I didn't have a leader on though so as I went to grab him he cut my line.
What do you use for a leader?
I enjoyed watching...Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Hey man! just found your channel! Left a like & a SUB! Always nice to support a fellow RUclipsr! watching all the way from Montana!
I really appreciate it! Many more videos to come
cant get enough of these attacks man,.. thats awesome got goosebumps
Hopefully the next one will be top water! That should be fun
yes , thats all ive been fly fishing latelly.. top water poppers... thats so sick good luck
Raoul gold same I love poppers the action is amazing
Nicely done, Duder....that simple stripping technique worked; gonna try that on my local creeks...a bit slower than I usually do, so maybe that change will result in more fish! Cheers.
Hey buddy, I love that you target pike, not many ppl do that so kudos to you! Have you considered kayak fishing? Catching a northern on a kayak is quite the rush! Anyways, really enjoy the videos, keep up the good work!
I have done a little kayak fishing, but if I were to get one I'd want a nice fishing kayak that I could set up other gopros on, and I don't have the money for that unfortunately.
Great video, more fly fishing👍
A lot of people are gonna tell you a lot of things. You're catching fish, enough said. My casting is ugly but I taught myself on smaller streams with much tighter cover and I figured out how to put the fly where I want regardless.
Love it. I live in Florida, have always wanted to do a Pike on a fly.
Definitely keep your hands out of the gills!
im loving the new fly fishing vids
I'm glad to hear that!
awesome, pike on fly!
Cant wait until you get that monster pike
I can't either! Hopefully soon.
The fish will let you know whether you should put your line on the reel.
awesome thanks for posting more fly fishing
You bet man! Many more to come
That was a cracking take at 0.48 !
Hi there love the video and I heard you say grand river which is were i plan to try this year. I am new to fly fishing and if you are in southern ontario would love to get out and try some bass and pike fishing with you someday never tried it yet .....tight lines and keep up the great work
Love these videos man. Some great fly fishing in Ireland. You should come over!
I'd love to! Maybe someday
Nice job man keep up the good work
Nice little stream.
love the fly fishing vids!
Many more to come!
Wow. Good job man!
I just love pike great video!
Thanks man!
Great vid, nice fishing!
Thanks for watching!
Dude, I love these videos. If I ever get out to that area (I'm in Utah) I'll ask ya for some tips.
Also, you should really get a net. There are cheap ones and you would have a lot fewer cuts on the fingers with one. Haha.
Where is this little river! I subbed for this video by the way, and your casting is improving every minute!
Try ambush line. So fun on single hand spey casting. And more time with fly in water
Cool video
U r a fantastic fly fisherman
great video bro. think I'm going to have to try my luck
Good luck out there man.
nice catch!
Don't listen to the fly fishing snobs fly fishing is easy the fish will get you on the real if it's big enough I see a lot of bullshit comments from people that don't do a lot of fly fishing keep up the good work
Great video! I really want to see you catch a 40" plus pike!
I hope I can get one soon! I'm gonna try to take some trips out somewhere at a lake or river that is better known for producing large fish.
some nice casting...
I never use the reel?lol I love the feeling of hand lining fish. The only time I go to the reel is on my 13 weight for tarpon.
Keep it up with the fly videos!!
Your a cool dude I'm new to fly fishing and this is pretty cool
It sure is fun!
I've been subbed for 2 years
I really appreciate the support, Mitch!
Love the video
Awesome , glad to see you using that 8wt. again. I much prefer the Fly rod, regardless of species. Much more of a sense of satisfaction IMO. You're gettin' good with that thing!
Oh I'll be using it a lot more! I'm really enjoying the whole fly fishing deal.
no one has a bass\pike fly fishing vids i think you should be the first!!!!
I would like to stand out more so that may be a good idea! Thanks for watching man!
Peelindrag ya I really want to get into fly fishing and it would be nice to have a channel like this to learn!!
Im also live in Michigan and fly fish (Orvis gear). I'm not sure where in Michigan you live but I can certainly meet up with you at some nice spots for mousing big brown trout in the Au Sable and mid size creeks in the lower peninsula! It would be a blast man. Let me know if your interested.
Nice video, do you have any videos where you talk about the setup that you're using in regards to leader, tippet, knot, wire-bite, etc? Thanks!
Not yet, I'm still very new to fly fishing for pike so I'm experimenting and figuring out what works best for me. Right now its just a 20lb RIO pike leader that comes with a wire trace at the end. The wire trace is what I'm still trying to figure out. The one I am using doesn't have the durability I'd like, but it still works.
man you made that look fun.
Oh it is tons of fun!
Great video
Thanks Evan!
Really good video, i enjoyed. LIKE
Thanks man! I'm glad to hear it!
Love your content
Thanks man!
hey i really like the videos definetly my favorites fly fishing channel but u should let us know what type of fly ur using plz
When a pike bites or any fish bites pull up short but fast and reel to your right for side pressure to tire your fish out
Great video looks fun!
Anyone else in comments using a st croix imperial? I’ve got a 7wt paired with an Allen kraken. Not digging the line I’ve got though. Seems mismatched. Was curious if anyone else thinks the imperial requires a higher wt line to load properly? I was thinking maybe some rio gold in 8wt. Any suggestions?
Ive been topwater pike fishing lately and boyy is it a rush when they needle out the water for a frog or a rat, you should try it out. Plus great production quality bud i really think you deserve more exposure
I think my next pike video will be top water, supposing I can get them to hit on the surface. I'm sure its a blast. I really appreciate the comment, it means a lot!
Peelindrag the pike tend to blow up the most on the edge of weedbeds and in the shade or on an overcast day, just as bass would. However i find theyve been more likely to hit the top water than the bass around here in Southeast WI possibly because of their agressive place in the food chain. Id be hyped to see you try it out lol
cool video.
Thanks man!
Keep them up
do you recommend the 8wt rod for fish this size?? I'm thinking about getting into fly fishing, just wondering if you had any recommendations on type of rod/reel :) enjoying your vids!
An 8 will work and if you are new to fly fishing I would not spend a lot....but, I would probably get something with a good warranty.
Another great video, I would try to fish at another body of water so you get a monster
I would love to, I just don't have many other decent pike waters around my area. I'm hoping to get a hold of a boat soon and take a trip to some good pike lakes though.
your doing very good keep doing vids
Thanks man!
U don’t need to take them to the reel it is a way better fight if u don’t also as long as u can feel the tension and make sure to release the line when they run they you’ll be fine
Nice video. I subscribed. Just getting into fly fishing as well. You fishing Ontario ?
Thanks man! I fish in Michigan.
wheres that?
nice videos dude
once again great video homie, also you thinking of doing this as a profession ?
I'm not sure at the time, I really enjoy it as a hobby though.
Awesome
Hey man, question for you, does fishing in a small creek like this require an 8 wt fly rod or could you use something like a 4 or 5 wt? Trying to get into fly fishing but there's a lot to learn. If you can find the time to reply I would greatly appreciate it!
Tyler in a tiny creek you should use a 5wt
You can certainly catch the fish I caught in this video on a 4 or 5wt. I have an 8wt because it allows me to throw larger streamers for pike, which a 4 or 5 wt would have trouble doing. With a lighter rod you'll just have to use smaller flies.
Nice!!
More fly fishing
Geesh!!
Nice video! you mentioned Grand river is that in Ontario? I live close to that river? Cheers
Thanks! There is a Grand river in Michigan, which is the one I was refering to.
Catch and release is great n all. But keep your hands out of the gills man.
Don' t take the fish from the gills if you are going to return it because you can kill it. Nice video!
Juan Ignacio Maffi
Pike are resilient and can be picked up easily by sliding your fingers under the gill plate and along a meshy area toward their “chin”. It won’t hurt them.
hi there,im a beginner of fly fishing, may i ask what type is your rod? is it a tip or mid flex rod?
What weight rod are u using can anyone help me out I’m loling to fish for smaller specs and also 20inch to 27 inch steel heads what would be the best weight rod and size reel?
Nice I just got into fly fishing too
It sure is fun!
can you recommend and wadable streams in lower michigan for pike? I fish the flat often and fish stretches i would assume have pike but not luck yet. Thanks
The muskegon river
What stream is this I live in the area and would love to fish it
never underestimate small stream ;) there may be beast in it.
I have seen 1kg persh in smaller stream or should i say ditch
Small streams are my favorite! I recently caught a 40 inch pike out of one just like this.
I would like to start fly fishing i know you are new so what weight line and stuff would you recommend for pan fish and teout and what would you recommend for bigger fish like bass
Ian Tweedie I would say a 5 or 6 weight
