As a local Singaporean, I commend you for the bravery, locals do not usually put their wallets, phones to 'chope' tables as though there is a low risk, there is still a possibilty of it being taken. leaving the macbook in a cafe however is less rare as people tend to leave such items when they are studying to go to the bathroom, so they tend to return quickly. leaving your cash out on the table however, is an easy way of it getting swiped off and dropping cash on the floor is anyone's game as there is no concrete proof that the cash belongs to you. as for leaving your wallet out by your back pocket, i dont think ive ever gotten my items stolen through such a method. it could just be me, but i feel singaporeans do not really like to touch other people? as in brush up against them or bump into people. so the likelyhood of that happening is relatively low as well ^^" the part where you left your wallet/ cash got me a little nervous. aside from that i think singapore is relatively safe. as you have described. low crime doesnt mean no crime though, please becareful out there ^^/
Years ago I left on my wallet on the bus seat once. $800 salary cash in it. I went back to the Punggol bus interchange where I first boarded the bus and reported it. The next day they called me to collect it back! All $800 still inside! A passenger found it and returned it to the bus captain who brought it back! Many many thanks to the kind passenger & captains in Punggol bus interchange! Really appreciated!
Lol super lucky, I lost many things on bus, watch, wallet, phone, all never found. Wallet was returned to school (that time I was still in primary school) with cash gone (~$20-30)
I've once accidentally left my wallet on the table at a Kopitiam. I was already on the way to take the train when i realised my wallet was missing. Went back to the Kopitiam table that I sat at and there was no wallet to be found. Went to the management and they were not aware of any missing wallets. Then i went back to the MRT station to ask if anyone had informed them of a missing wallet. They said they will get back to me if they are informed. I went back home and sometime in the evening, the officers at the train station called me and informed me someone had dropped my wallet off to them and i was glad nothing was stolen!

Many years ago, there was a pregnant lady with a toddler in a shopping trolley. She needed to use the bathroom badly. I offered to keep an eye on her baby girl. Initially, she was hesitant. I took out my wallet and told her to hold on to my identity card if she didn't trust me. The whole time she was in the cubicle, I assured her that I was STILL outside by chatting with her little one. still have to be vigilant in SG as there are criminals travelling to SG to commit crimes like the recent spate of house breaking. There were also cases of foreign pickpockets in SG.
Locals are generally honest. But as a local, I have witnessed my friend and family being pick-pocketed here. So please remain vigilant. I hope Singapore remain safe and low crime for everyone.
As a local, there are a 2 MAIN reasons that i can think of. First off, Singapore is just so darn small and with tons of cameras around, you basically cant run far if police reports were to be lodged. The sentence for theft is just not worth it (for that few dollars). Second, us locals really not that poor till the extent that we need to STEAL these things (to put food on our table), it won't get us anywhere.. But still it is a risky move/experiment as there are more and more different sorts of people around
I was once eating @ a crowded foodcourt & saw a lady using her wallet to chope table. I kept my eyes on her wallet as I was concerned & worried. I only left after she came back with her food.
My heart was thumping watching this as I don’t want to see anyone those experiments failed. We love spending our holidays in SG as we feel not only is the place clean and with very affordable public transport that is easy to reach from point A to B unlike in Sydney but also love the people surroundings culture and food. Don’t like the humidity though🤭 but we are planning for our 10th trip there. I understand there are places that you have to be alert but so far our holidays in singapore has been enjoyable. Love the Singaporean ❤
As a Singaporean, it feels like we are afraid of losing something valuable so we are being cautious of our stuffs and also the stuffs of others. We trust ourselves we will never take the things of others and also we do not trust that others will never take our things thus making this a cultured mindset of most Singaporeans.
i was in Ikea just last week and while shopping for glassware, put my Fold5 on a shelf.. after choosing my items i forgot my phone and walked off.. about 5-10mins later while at the cashier i realised i left my phone.. rushed back to the glassware section.. thankfully my phone still in the same spot.. love SG!!! haha
There used to be occasional pickpocket syndicates from overseas targeting people, especially in tourist areas, but seems like they are gone after covid....
I encountered pick pocket twice, that happens a long long time ago. Once was when i was boarding a bus, felt someone digging my bag, saw this woman 1 hand in my bag, 1 hand holding a baby 2 kids looking on - ask her what you are doing, she said trying to get your money...i pity the kids and i pity her but no way to encourage this. 2nd time shopping at a mall, heard 2 person talkimg, 1 ask which 1 and i turn saw a hand in my bag, the woman cannot decide which wallet to take cos i had 3 (gifts from friends). Singapore is relatively safe, when times are bad, petty crime also goes up.
@@yekai7599 Not china citizen. I encountered china citizen eye balling 2 cute keychains attached to our haversack bags for ease identification, left our bags on table to get buffet food, came back, our cute keychains gone.
Maybe due to the presence of camera.... I dropped my phone in a coffeeshop. Then I took a few steps forward before I realized it and turned back it is gone. When I asked the stall owner he looked blur. You were lucky.
I'm a local Singaporean, I've ever accidentally left my laptop at the MRT station and when I came back it was gone. However, a few days later my school contacted me that someone found my laptop & return it at the lost and found corner. I was really surprised by what happened.
Most Singaporeans won’t bother stealing or taking things that don’t belong to them but we have tons of foreign hustlers here that pray on the locals. So it’s still better to take good care of your belongings.
Aiyoh... My heart skips a beat with each segment while you enthusiastically got on with those experiments. Don't do this again lah even though it is indeed safe... Always remember that "mantra" as well- "Low Crime Doesn't Mean No Crime" hahaha. But excellent to you and this place. Lucky us. 🙂
Don't forget there are many other nationalities in Singapore, who will view your $50/- and wallet differently. Typically, do not leave your expensive belongings unattended, the risks of losing them is still there.
I've gotten my bag stolen from my school library in poly many years ago. I had left it to chope a table while I searched for a book. Cctv shows a well dressed man stuffing it into his bag. I was lucky to have my phone in my pocket to call for help. But he wasn't caught. 🤷🏻♀️ Low crime doesn't mean low crime. Need to remember that many humans are opportunists and greedy. Even more so if they are in dire need. Try not to be complacent.
Last month I forgot my laptop bag in Albert Hawker Center and I went for shopping. I drove off and 3 hours later I realised my mistake and rush back. And my laptop bags are still there.. Probably those people taught I 'chop' the place. 😂😂😂
Usually when you leave something valuable such as wallet or phone in a crowded hawker centre, the kaypoh locals will watch the item and judge the person's intelligence. With so many watchful eyes, it is really not easy to steal the item unnoticed. 🤭
@@simplyme3306Not really I once witness the uncles and aunties helped the thief to steal the electric bike which belong to someone they know 😅🤣 reason was because the thief told them he lost his bike chain key so they all offered to help him cut the chain 😂
I have seen a teenager leaving his computer bag on a seat to buy food in a food court. His computer bag was taken by another teenager. Only when he came back & asked around for his bag did people realise it was stolen.
I once found an iPhone inside a toilet cubicle at Suntec, I took it and stood outside the toilet to look out for the most flustered-looking female around. She eventually came back to the toilet after 15 min, looking panicked and I approached her to ask if she had lost her phone, and she said Yes. She turned out to be a Chinese tourist and she thanked me profusely. I told her to be careful in future. She is very lucky she is in Singapore.
Some times it is the true blue Singaporeans that will disappoint us. I was a young teenager when I witnessed a Singaporean auntie picking up money someone dropped and put it in her pocket straight away. The person was like 2 steps away from her.
Some years ago, there were Colombians flying all the way here from the opposite end of the earth just to burgle homes here. Fake monks from neighbouring countries were also seen begging here. Looks like SG attracts all kinds of FT haha.
the funny thing is yes usually we will "jagar" (guard) the precious for the unknowing.. strange lol. Once saw a guy from UK and he left his laptop bag to "chope".... 10mins later he appeared and we told him the dangers and he was surprised we actually "jagar" for him. After some convo turns out the person is touring SG and all that.
Once I was very tired as I had insomnia and all I wanted was to withdraw $200+ and then rush home to nap. And when you withdraw from ATM, your card will come out first before your cash. Because I wasn't focused, I just took my card and leave, while my cash came out 3 seconds later. And the dude who was behind me raised his voice "Bro! What's wrong with you"..His choice of word wasn't the kindest, but clearly his heart is. I guess he felt pressured thinking of how troublesome it is having to hold onto the cash and return it to the police if I walked away and didn't return. And he took the cash and pass to me As I was like 5 steps away from the ATM.
I had this incident too. I was tired but needed to draw some money. I took my card and went off without waiting for the money. When I realised what I did after 30 mins, I went back to find a lady standing there. She waited for me to come back. She is a shopowner and her shop is just right in front of ATM. She witnessed what I did and kept the money for me. I met an angel that day.
When you say "I believe in you Singapore" 3 times, you can leave your valuables on the table and nobody will take it. Remember, must say that 3 times. Say 2 times won't work ah. Lol
I saw a China lady crying at Takashimaya basement as she lost her wallet, Her bags were cut open, Singapore still has some pickpocket frying in from overseas. So be careful of your belongings.
Sg is definitely much safer than many other countries. Appreciate this so much! (Btw Kena pickpocketed in one European city this year despite taking precautions!)
During covid period at Ikea Alexandra, wife dropped her phone, traced back couldn't find it, reported to security, pushed to the police station opposite which simply filed a report. No assistance was given by both parties. Traced the phone location to Malaysia the next day. They had sent it by courier due to MCO. Super efficient.
I once accidentally left my wallet in a public restroom in a mall. Less than 2 hours later I received a call from a police station telling me someone had turned in my wallet and to come down to collect it. All my money was still in the wallet (and it was a couple hundred cause I needed to pay for some bills).
Happened years ago at Clarke Quay. Police came to look for the restaurant staff who stole the phone that was left on the table after the customer left & tried to sold it. In the end, it was too late to recover the phone as it has already been shipped out to Indonesia.
Nani Ojib San?It's good that you try out in Singapore .In Japan also sama, sama .Those who take your wallet money, they are poor living day by day..Just my thoughts,Gomen 😊
Laptop is too huge to take away in public, so it should be totally safe. Wallet is also too big. It is super strange for someone to put cash on the table, so the chance of being taken away is there. If the money is no the floor, quite likely whoever finds it will keep it cos u won't be able to know who dropped it unless u saw with your eyes. That being said, my dad misplaced his handphone twice and got them back on both occasions. However, my niece left her laptop inside the toilet cubicle and someone took it away. As for pickpocketing, I believe the foreigners here are the ones who are responsible, not a Singaporean thing to do. Just sharing.
Haha, great try! Super impressed by your faith in Singapore! You won't get your pocket picked with someone literally watching your back! I've lived here my whole life and have never heard of pickpocket incidents before, at least in my circle.
as a local, if i see cash floating around on the floor with nobody looking for it, i would swipe it straight into my wallet hahahah. great experiment but i would still not use my wallet to chope as there is high chance of it getting stolen.
Totally agree. I once accidentally left my car doors unlocked and one of the windows was wound down. Parked in a very busy area. Worked the whole day. When I came back...nothing was missing.
It doesnt matter whether locals or foreigners its the honesty of the person that counts dont tempt fate if u leave anything of value unattended no one is going to feel sorry for you if its stolen
Pls never leave your wallet and belongings unattended. It is not safe doing that, low crime doesn't mean no crime. Usually if most Singaporeans sees it they will protect your belongings until you are back and they will advise you not to do that. It is too dangerous doing that. Not all human beings are honest.
Typically Singaporeans hates trouble, so we just kind of mind our own business and hope that someone quickly come back and claim the expensive items.. We hope people can be more responsible because some of us really will silently “Jar-gar” (look out) for you when you leave expensive items unattended. Low crime doesn’t mean no crime! Never take chances that Singapore has low crime rate and than just leave/forget your things. Even my mum will tell me not to leave my bags unattended to go order food.
I was at a cafe earlier. My friend and I marvelled at how this woman left ALL her stuff - laptop, phone and bag - at the table she was sitting at. There was another man in the same cafe who left his laptop at his table, too.
I’m not sure if the pickpocket social experiment is a valid one. With a camera person following you and your narration, it’s a bit hard for a pickpocket to take action on your wallet or cash from your back pocket.😅
Handphone is more likely to be gone though. Jewellery as well. Also, things more likely to disappear in toilet cubicles where no one is watching. In public, it is less likely for anyone to do bad. Singaporean here. Do NOT risk it. Low crime doesn’t mean no crime. In public, there are mothers who leave crying babies on their own as well. The general standard here is that the majority will guard it for you. But try in a place that can’t be seen. People behave differently.
A friend of mine has gotten a very expensive bicycle stolen with chain and the pole that the bike is chained to so while sg is relatively safe it’s best not to leave anything casually anywhere. But great social experiment. Shows that there is hope yet 😊😊😊
I put my ipad on a table in a library and this young chinese about 8yrs old girl went straight for my ipad.. in front of so many people.. we need to educate our new citizens and their children and imported workers about thief and its consequences..
I think it's because stealing a wallet in Singapore is not very worth it... even $50 can't bring you very far here. Compare that to other cities in the region where the average person struggles even to literally put food on the table. But yes - low crime doesn't mean no crime!!
I retuned a $10 note to an Aussie when I was Melbourne. I saw her dropped the note. Well, since I know who to return to, I cannot in good conscience not return it to her. Singaporean here 😢. I also once returned $700 to a couple watching movie in front of me. I knew who to return to... So again, I needed to return it. Sigh... If only I don't know who to return to. Which once, it did. I found a $50 note in a lift lobby, and hehe, I kept it cos idk who dropped it 😂
I was in the train and like i accidentally forgot my phone on the seat and lucky someone found it and gave it to the ticket counter and i went back there and got it back.
Doing this in hong lim I think somewhat safer since cbd, crowded area most aren't desperate enough to do this "risky" crime. You leave it in a quiet coffeeshop in neighborhood areas thing I think would be different, especially when you just put cash there. Laptops and wallet should be fine though, its usualy the loose cash that is more tempting. Most people don't really care enough to even notice your stuff
I only time I encountered pickpockets was at the wisma connection to taka and it was done by foreigners. Managed the stop them before they took off with the money.
Ghib dont ask for trouble... Usually if i see expensive stuff left, i just think the person is very careless. Also if someone dropped something it is best to return it. So unto others what you want done to you
Recent year... I also don't heard or see any of this news online but years ago... probably 20+ ago... A lot of theft on handphone, especially when people eating at coffeeshop and there was a lot of handphone being stolen. I think it was very difficult to sell them just several years back and thus this actually do reduce it. Furthermore, there are a lot police camera nowadays and thus making it harder to escape being caught. And also pickpockets will not target very obvious targets as they could be police made decoys to get them caught.
Quite difficult for criminals to commit crimes since a camera is stalking around. Our flower plants along the corridor at our house at Chinatown were plucked 'botak' by people. Our shoes and clothes were stolen while hanging along corridor to dry. My MRT Card and $10 note in a plastic slot went missing at a MRT station. Went back to search but couldn't find them. A few months ago, my safety shoes in a shoe box were left outside for a day. Nothing happened. The next day, they were gone. My friend's $1k plus bicycle was chain-locked outside the flat, also got stolen. So Singapore is not so safe at all.
Ghib, Thanks for your experience. But, like what u said low crime does not mean no crime. I spoke to the ice cream uncle at Bugis Village where u visited. According to him, there were pick pockets crimes and ask me to be careful. I must caution against leaving HP notebook wallets on tables train. Don't test your luck.
*Not everyone there is bad*, but there are lots of crooks amongst people in the Northern part of Singapore (Yishun, Woodlands, Marsiling, Sembawang) - litterbugs, drug abusers, shoplifters, scammers, illegal car mods etc.. Don't be too trusting of everyone or every place in Singapore.
I left my $5000 hermes wallet, with cards, cash and toto ticket within at a macdonalds, right at the ledge of the ordering counter. The filipino store manager took it and safeguarded it for me in the staff room. I came back for it within a few hours and it was returned to me with contents in tact.
Definitely safer than other countries! Great experiment for non locals but an expected result from the locals. Not to sound offensive but we are kaypohs which will lead to snitching😂
Please DO NOT try this in Singapore. I have got things stolen before. my whole school bag with all my notes inside, at a MacDonald's. My exam was 3 days away and it was stressing me out that all my notes are gone and I cannot do last minute study.
I’ve lost my wallet several times in Singapore and they were always returned to the police station with cards inside but without cash. And someone took my iPhone once when I left it on a counter in Cold Storage Jelita. So no Singapore is not as safe as you think.
As a singaporean singapore is safe. One time when I was walking in the mrt platform I dropped my wallet and someone picked it up and gave it back to me ❤🇸🇬
Singapore is safe & its people are honest. Those who steal or snatch your belongings are foreigners who came here to commit crimes. Most of them have been put into bars. Kudos to us Singaporeans 😄😄
About 15 years ago I accidentally left my handphone in the toilet cubicle in Sim Lim Square. I noticed it after I walked like 15 metres away from the toilet. Went back as fast as I can and... my phone gone. I tried to borrow phone from a store and call my phone, my phone already was switched off. Guess I am just unlucky huh.

We trust ourselves we will never take the things of others and also we do not trust that others will never take our things thus making this a cultured mindset of most Singaporeans.
i was in Ikea just last week and while shopping for glassware, put my Fold5 on a shelf.. after choosing my items i forgot my phone and walked off.. about 5-10mins later while at the cashier i realised i left my phone.. rushed back to the glassware section.. thankfully my phone still in the same spot.. love SG!!! haha
Not everyone in Singapore is a Singaporean. Stay safe
And not all Singaporeans are pure Singaporeans. Don't forget that too!
There used to be occasional pickpocket syndicates from overseas targeting people, especially in tourist areas, but seems like they are gone after covid....
Yes, Bugis area especially.
Yah the Vietnamese syndicates.
Always happen during CNY in Chinatown
Another reason why I love my country so much :D
I encountered pick pocket twice, that happens a long long time ago. Once was when i was boarding a bus, felt someone digging my bag, saw this woman 1 hand in my bag, 1 hand holding a baby 2 kids looking on - ask her what you are doing, she said trying to get your money...i pity the kids and i pity her but no way to encourage this. 2nd time shopping at a mall, heard 2 person talkimg, 1 ask which 1 and i turn saw a hand in my bag, the woman cannot decide which wallet to take cos i had 3 (gifts from friends). Singapore is relatively safe, when times are bad, petty crime also goes up.
are those woman singaporean? or china citizen in singapore?
@@yekai7599
Not china citizen. I encountered china citizen eye balling 2 cute keychains attached to our haversack bags for ease identification, left our bags on table to get buffet food, came back, our cute keychains gone.
The true test is when people think no one is watching. Try leaving it in a secluded staircase.
You're lucky. My daughter first year in SPoly left her NEW iPad & MacBook behind outside a mall in Clementi. Went back to look for them...GONE!!!
Lucky us. 🙂
Not everyone in Singapore is true local Singaporean, it's better to be careful still.
Low crime doesn't mean low crime.
yes cos the place is crowded with people. i.e. full of eye witness lol. Nobody dare to do anything unlawful and steal it with so many eyes watching.
@@simplyme3306Not really I once witness the uncles and aunties helped the thief to steal the electric bike which belong to someone they know 😅🤣 reason was because the thief told them he lost his bike chain key so they all offered to help him cut the chain 😂
lol@@ElectroDuckyMusic
Great video!!! SG is really safer than I thought.. But I still wldnt dare to chope with $50 on the table 😂😂😂
Lucky for her indeed. I hope you made her verify or at least describe her phone before you handed it over to her.
Please bear in mind that of the 5+ million population only 3+million are true blue Singaporeans. The rest are work permit holders etc.
Some times it is the true blue Singaporeans that will disappoint us. I was a young teenager when I witnessed a Singaporean auntie picking up money someone dropped and put it in her pocket straight away. The person was like 2 steps away from her.
The person who pickpocket or pickup cash may be a foreigner or a tourist and very rarely a Singaporean
Well say.... once they knew people tend to leave their stuffs unattended in Singapore. They might come over here and commit crime. Be safe n be alert.
That’s breaking news: Tourists fly to Singapore to pickpocket Singaporeans! 😂
After some convo turns out the person is touring SG and all that.
those pickpocket is usually is foreigners, today news I think the police have caught some
This happened at Bugis
Super efficient.
you said it yourself, committed by malaysian.
In the end, it was too late to recover the phone as it has already been shipped out to Indonesia.
the staff probably a foreign worker.
You have yet to meet pick pocket syndicate, they came in a team and act very fast , usually this syndicate came from abroad
I can say most singaporean wont take it, however please remember singapore is a hub for many other tourist
as a local, if i see cash floating around on the floor with nobody looking for it, i would swipe it straight into my wallet hahahah. great experiment but i would still not use my wallet to chope as there is high chance of it getting stolen.
Wah, never never leave any valuables out in the open even though Ghib's experiments showed otherwise.
low crime doesn't mean no crime!
Singapore is not only Singaporeans living here. Please remember SG has only about 61 citizens. So do not expose your rise.😁
You are very brave to use $50 to chope a seat
日本より治安いいですね!来月からシンガポールに住むので安心しましたが、おサイフをそのまま置く勇気はないです、、😅

depends on the place man. highly depended on the place.
Yes uncles in Singapore like to “oi” here and there
I was at a cafe earlier. My friend and I marvelled at how this woman left ALL her stuff - laptop, phone and bag - at the table she was sitting at. There was another man in the same cafe who left his laptop at his table, too.
I recently dropped my wallet on a bus and did not even realise. Luckily a kind lady picked it up and returned it to me.
Never recommend and encourage this to tourists, don’t forget people who’s will commit a crime in Singapore might not be Singaporean.
A friend of mine has gotten a very expensive bicycle stolen with chain and the pole that the bike is chained to so while sg is relatively safe it’s best not to leave anything casually anywhere. But great social experiment. Shows that there is hope yet 😊😊😊
Proud to be Singaporean. =)
Singapore is safe, but not 100% safe。
Don’t stress the Singaporeans la 😂
We are not stressed at all
Maybe some of us but not all of us
Doing this in hong lim I think somewhat safer since cbd, crowded area most aren't desperate enough to do this "risky" crime.
I get very stressed when I see people doing that and would feel compelled to keep an eye on it till they return even if I've finished my meal.
So Singapore is not so safe at all.
.... you know, if that happened to me, I won't be worried about random pickpockets, I'd be asking which neighbour do you have a grudge with...
you are probably a difficult person to live with hence people target you.
Next time you do that I will donate your money/wallet to old uncle or aunty selling tissues…😂
i'm more curious, where is your wallet from! it looks nice
Hello ! not only people staying in the northern part, basically every where is the same!!
Those uncles at Block 531 are regulars, so no problem
I left my $5000 hermes wallet, with cards, cash and toto ticket within at a macdonalds, right at the ledge of the ordering counter. The filipino store manager took it and safeguarded it for me in the staff room. I came back for it within a few hours and it was returned to me with contents in tact.
Even if singaporen don take . But Don forget we have too many foreigners working here. 😅Blessing 🙏
My exam was 3 days away and it was stressing me out that all my notes are gone and I cannot do last minute study.
the wallet in back pocket thing, the chances of you getting tapped on to ask you to keep the wallet properly by a fierce auntie is much higher 🤣
