1:52 You should be ashamed of yourself. Any fan of the NFL and it's history should know John Matuszak (muh-TOO-zak). Number one overall draftpick. 2x Superbowl Champ. Outstounding d-lineman, followed by a worthy stint as an actor. Best known as "Sloth" in "The Goonies". Died tragically young, only 38.
I share the same sentiments and was about to echo your statements but had to verify if anyone else commented first 😆 Thank you for pointing this out! Matuzak was the man and a great raider! Silver and black for life baby! Obviously this guy is too young to know who these players were
Big Jon Matuszek was on an episode of First and Ten. In the episode he had an issue with steroids/drugs. Which very well may have mirrored his real life. At the end of the episode he died. Then just a year or two later he died in real life. Steroids can make you into a beast, but they can also end your life early.
Have the dude open it have a clue puff Puff Pass like a lot of them looking for the magical rookie cannot pronounce name LOL 😅l Really com-on Clark had one of the biggest catches in playoff history !!!
The 1982 Topps set was a good one. The insets of the team helmets in the lower left look really sharp. Also, that LT sticker might get you a few bucks.
I don't think gum was the worst idea because it was designed to be a secondary treat for the kid collecting baseball cards in the day. I can speak for this with experience collecting wax packs in the 60's and 70's. In those days, no one thought of cards to be collectors items like we do today. Cards stained by gum is also what makes those which are not valuable. Who knows, some say that cards stained with gum will be very collectable because it depicts the time in which I am speaking.
1982 was the first year Topps had a license to include the team logos. Centering for the 1982 Topps set is good compared to other years like 1984 and 1986 where centering is a major issue. 1982 also is the last year for a while when Topps had 528 cards in the set. Topps reduced set sizes to 396 cards for the remainder of the 1980s. 1983's set had double prints of 528-396=132 cards including Marcus Allen's rookie. Action cards were a part of the 1981 (Super Action), 1982 (In Action), and 1984 (Instant Replay) sets. 1982 may be the best of the lot because the In Action cards give collectors a second Montana, Lott, and L. Taylor card.
The funny thing about the gum is..... It's what used to BE the product. Cards used to come in tobacco packs and had very little appeal to adults of the times. Therefore adding cards to tobacco products did not increase sales. So, companies started to put cards in with the gum as an extra incentive to kids to purchase 'their' gum verses other companies gum because kids were into cards more.
I just opened 3 packs sealed trio of 1979 Topps football. Gum was dry, hard and chalk like. Wonder if the clear wrap over my three preserved mine or these packs were wet or something else happened???
Joe Klecko NY Jets D-Lineman had a part in a Burt Reynolds movie. Either Smokey and the Bandit or Cannonball Run. I think he lifted up someone's car or something. Incredibly strong individual. Teammate of the great Mark Gastineau who you also pulled but was ruined by the gum.
Big scam years ago with wax pack cards of any type was they would use an iron to open the packs and search em for the good cards, and then reseal em with the iron. And yeah, you GOTTA do better with your history, like the other commenter said. Matuszak was a legend! And no one cared back in 1982 about centering, marks, gum stains or anything else for that matter, that you mention now as the sophisticated collector you are. We just wanted cool cards to collect. All the things you mention only apply now. Collecting was a new thing 40 yrs ago, if at all...
Awesome video, thanks for sharing! Is that LT sitting next to Brian Kelly @ 4:06 ? If so, that should sell for something 😉 I'm looking to buy my 1st unopened box, and leaning toward something that may make sense to open, like 82 Topps Football in hopes to pull an LT, Ronnie Lott, Montana, or Walter Payton, etc. However, that gum staining, almost like water damage on the card and pack itself, example @ 2:58. Is that pretty typical, or perhaps humidity over the year? I've seen more where it just sticks to the card. My fear is I'd pull a perfectly centered and cut Lawrence Taylor, with gum stuck on it, that would be a bit traumatic 😢
That bad of gum staining is atypical for 1982. I opened a lot of 1982 the past 30 years. He got some rough packs as far as gum stains. But you can expect there to be at least some staining on a card in each pack and a little staining or a lot of staining is still staining.

The gum was a bad idea but waiting 40 years to open them probably was not something they took Into consideration.

Indeed! and someone might want the Montana as is? Too bad they appear to have not been stored properly and were likely at the bottom of the box!
I've had a bunch of topps wax packs with gum older than these, I have never seen the gum in this bad of shape ever. Must have been stored in the heat?

Nice Joe! Cards are in pretty good shape too 👍
a Psa 9 of the Lawrence Taylor sticker sold for $113.50 in sept. 2023. Prices have gone up slightly since then. good luck

I’ve never seen gum that bad before 😬

Well, you did get LT!..... in the background of the Brian Kelley card.

John Mat-u-zak 😆
I could not believe how groce the gum was. I guess it was humidity.
Nice I would like to find a Stabler/Oiler card
those packs at some point in the past have gotten wet. I believe that's why the gum has degraded as much as it has.
