    Awesome review Patrick
    Just bought the Spirit and Origin and for me Spirit fits more. I think for darker voices could give a benefit because it's really open and brighter focus in frequencies.
    Origin was little bit to much in the middles so it sounds a little bit metallic, maybe like the old radio microphones.
    What are you're experience? Maybe the Origin sounds better on brighter voice for females?
    Sm7b is like the ultimate no brainer I think, only think is it cuts out the highs a little bit too much I think.
    But maybe it's his advantage over rest of all. In the mix maybe Spirit is just more liveful.

    This mic is super impressive. Sounds beautifully rounded without any processing. I really like the sound of their dynamic mic too.
    How the hell do they do it for that kind of money?
    Also, the track bops. Nice work.

    • @CarlyonProduction
      @CarlyonProduction 4 года назад

      Also I would say - I disagree with one thing....the mic to get if you are just recording vocals is the cheaper one.
      If I am not mistaken, the reason it is cheaper is because it only has one polar pattern - hence if you are only doing vocals and don’t need the extra polar patterns, why not get the cheaper one?
      Unless I am missing something....

    • @PatrickBreenMusic
      @PatrickBreenMusic  4 года назад +1

      David Carlyon thank you for the kind words my friend. Appreciate that!
      As for the spirit vs origin discussion - the reviews I’ve seen and the sound tests I’ve listened to demonstrate that the spirit is just a smoother sounding mic. Yes the spirit has more features, which makes it more expensive, but it also has a higher Max Sound Pressure Level, which should explain why the Origin sounds a little bit more rough.
      I think a lot of people’s preference would be to have a smoother vocal recording. But at the end of the day it’s completely subjective. I may have oversimplified that point in the video. At the end of the day, the cheaper mic is still a crazy good mic. Either would be a very good addition to one’s mic arsenal.
      Good points though man. Appreciate you bringing that up.

    Better or worse than the TLM-102 in your opinion for vocals?

    • @PatrickBreenMusic
      @PatrickBreenMusic  4 года назад +1

      michaeldproject the TLM 102 is $200 more than this Aston Spirit mic. So it’s really hard to compare these two. The TLM sounds better for my ear, it captures more detail and has more body than Aston, but it should for $200 more. I did the shootout in this video to (hopefully) show that the Aston holds its own with other commonly used mics, and (in my opinion) the Aston holds its own with a mic that is more robust and more expensive. Do whatever is best for your budget, both mics are great options.

(At least that’s what my choir teacher put me in was lowest alto when I was in highschool and it’s my comfort range you know) but I’ve tested notes all over that range, it doesn’t make my whistle notes sound wierd or distorted, it makes my lows sound like a warm hug it’s absolutely amazing. Can you make a comparison among Rode NT1, Aston Origin, and Aston Spirit?
    In my country, Rode NT1 is even more expensive than Aston Origin, and sits between Aston Origin and Aston Spirit. Aston Spirit in my country is about 50% more expensive than Aston Origin. Before watching your this video, I already watched one comparison between Aston Spirit and Aston Origin, and then another comparison between Aston Spirit and Rode NT1. Still no one has made the comparison between Rode NT1 and Aston Origin.

  • @joseyang5098
    @joseyang5098 3 года назад +1

    In fact Aston Spirit doesn't require a pop filter. It already has a built-in integrated pop filter.
    And, Shure SM7B is a dynamic microphone, which has a frequency response from 50Hz to 18kHz.
    Aston Spirit is a condenser microphone with a frequency response from 20Hz to 20kHz..

    • @PatrickBreenMusic
      @PatrickBreenMusic  3 года назад +2

      I think the origin is solid, especially for the price. I've used one but I do not own one. Using my friend's origin is what put me on to Aston mics in the first place. I just think the value of the spirit is a little bit better. Plus, the spirit sounds better on vocals in my opinion, and that's what I primarily record with this mic.

    is it just me or does the Aston exaggerate some nasty mid highs between 2-4k? I have to origin and seem to have to battle this all the time

    • @DonKelleyMusic
      @DonKelleyMusic 3 года назад

      I heard a different video on youtube that compared to the origin as well, and imho the origin does have an upper mid hump that can be nasty, where as this mic imho sounds neutral to very slightly scooped in that range, based on all of the youtube videos i've checked out. So I think the origin is NOT just a cardioid only version of the spirit.. the spirit is better for vocals even in card mode. I don't own either though... just speaking from listening and being very interested in purchasing... and it's the spirit for me for sure.

      There's nothing "cheap" sounding about the Spirit. I have mics that cost several times what I paid for my Spirit, and it does not sound "cheap". Listen to Molly Sanden singing live through the Spirit on youtube. If you think that sounds cheap, something is wrong with your ears.

    • @rylandweet7750

      @@jamesb44 lol there is absolutely nothing wrong with my hearing , I actually use lots of expensive microphones,,,, and I mean lots….. the spirit is cheap sounding in the 10k range, the mids are like a “fake” warm , reminds me a lot of an audio technica at2035, of which I would prefer over the spirit any day, the 4040 is a better microphone, and cheaper by 50 bucks, I do find Aston’s products over priced and all of their products just aren’t as good

    • @jamesb44
      @jamesb44 2 года назад +1

      @@rylandweet7750 Lol Why would you bother with a 2035 if you’re using “lots of”expensive mics? Seems to me, you’d mention the expensive mics over a lowly turd. Something stinks. And, to describe something as “fake warm”? Lol It’s clear that you haven’t a clue. And what is “cheap sounding” vs expensive? I had an at4047, and I’d pick the Spirit every time over it.

    • @rylandweet7750
      @rylandweet7750 2 года назад +1

      @@jamesb44 I said I have used tons of expensive mics….. knowing you have not, therefore I’m explaining that an at2035 sounds similar to the Aston as in the mids…. I have used tons of mics not just expensive. And if you don’t understand what a fake warm mic sounds like it’s clear you are not experienced enough, specially if you like the spirit over the at4047… which is also not my favourite mic but it’s a lot better then all of the mics Aston has put out. I’m not sorry i hurt you’re childish emotions for bashing you’re favourite mic. It’s not a great mic compared to others even in the price range. It’s a decent mic that can get you by with amateur quality. Not commercial while the at4047 can get you commercial.. I doubt you even know what commercial is
      But when it comes to the 4040 ,,, the 4040 can get you commercial quality and it’s cheaper

    How would you compare this mic to the AKG C214? For vocals!

    • @PatrickBreenMusic
      @PatrickBreenMusic  4 года назад

      Univ I actually don’t believe I’ve ever used the c214. I’ve used 414’s quite a bit, (obviously a much more expensive mic) but I definitely trust AKG’s product. Overall reviews seem to be pretty favorable for both mics and the specs look mostly similar. You get multiple polar patterns with the Aston Spirit, not with the AKG. And the AKG’s low cut filter cuts at 160Hz where the Spirit cut 80Hz - I prefer the Spirit here, but that’s totally subjective.
      I think you’d be happy with either Mic, you just need to decide if you want to pay more for more polar patterns. Obviously the mics will sound a little bit different, but from the reviews I’m reading, the sound difference won’t be huge.
