"New Dawn" in Bangladesh? Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus Sworn In as PM After Student Protests

We go to Dhaka for an update as Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus is sworn in to lead Bangladesh’s caretaker government just days after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled the country amid a wave of student-led protests over inequality and corruption. Yunus is known as the “banker to the poor” and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work developing microloans that helped lift millions out of poverty. Yunus thanked Bangladeshi youth for giving the country a “rebirth” and vowed to work for the public good.
“This is uncharted territory,” says Shahidul Alam, an acclaimed Bangladeshi photojournalist, author and social activist, who has spent decades documenting human rights abuses and political and social movements in the country. Alam was jailed in 2018 for his criticism of the government and spent 107 behind bars, during which time he says he was tortured by the authorities. “This repression has taken such a toll on so many people for so long, the nation is just hugely relieved.”
We also speak with Nusrat Chowdhury, an associate professor of anthropology at Amherst College and author of Paradoxes of the Popular: Crowd Politics in Bangladesh. She says it’s very significant that student leaders are being brought into the new government and says Yunus is a rare public figure in Bangladesh who exists “beyond party politics” and has the chance to unify the country.

Cabinet filled with student and professor activists, brilliant economists, human and minority rights activists, former social workers who worked to empower the poor, former military general who helped bring back democracy in Bangladesh, representation from male, female, member of different religious communities, indigenous groups.

@MamoonAlRasheed Of course but you have to understand the optimism of Bangladeshi people. Intellectuals were never in power before. The country was always lead by people who claim to power was through family lineage or military dictatorship. All of that was backed by ministers whose primary experience leading gangsters on the street like a Mafia capo.
Bangladesh’s improvement was always down to the intellectual class who despite all these and massive corruption worked tirelessly to empower the poor. Now for the first time seeing them finally be in center of power is sign of hope and progress!

For the sake of Bangladesh's future and for the benefit of all, I wish Mohammad Yunus could somehow be the elected PM for quite some time. He is an internationally renowned academic and revered by friends and foe alike--at least it seems that way. I believe he will act selflessly to lead Bangladesh back to law, order and economic progress. The whole world has witnessed the total chaos created by divisive politics and a meddling military in Pakistan. Bangladeshi's must realize that great achievements mean making great sacrifices and having great patience, great optimism. Impatience in the fledgling government and demanding alternatives too soon will lead to total chaos like Pakistan. Look and learn how inclusivity and political stability in the past two decades has helped transform India to the 5th largest economy in the world. Too all Bangladeshis--may your new Government live up to its great expectations and deliver...

One of the surprising thing even to Bangladeshis were the sudden neutrality of the army chief. He was assigned to the post by Hasina because he is the husband of Hasina's cousin and a known loyalist to Hasina like all of the army chiefs before him. Army initially even followed Hasina's orders to deploy troops throughout the country to scare and fire on student protesters but, it seemed after seeing the destruction army had caused on civilian population, and many officers within the army getting furious with the decision of being used as a government tool. the army chief too had a change of heart and declared that army won't fire a single round on any civilian and would only work as a defense force for the remaining of the protest. Hasina even called the army chief a traitor on the day she fled because he was the one who explained the situation to Hasina that she either has to resign and leave the country or face the protesting mass who were heading towards the pm residence. She wanted army to open fire on the mass again but he refused. He even had a chance to take over power once Hasina fled, but decided to help transition the power peacefully, had all the security forces leader arrested who were loyalist to Hasina and took part in all of Hasina's cruelty in last 15 years. The arrests within the security forces are still on going. He was under threat himself of facing a coup from Hasina's loyalist within the army but he held his ground. Also, I'd like to say thanks to the general people of India and rest of the world for speaking up about the student protest. It helped a lot to put foreign pressure on Hasina's authoritarian regime from using deadly forces further. I know currently the country is still in turmoil with vandalisms going on in the absence of police who went on strike because people have completely lost faith in them after they've done in last 20 days or so. But it's slowly coming back to normalcy. This interim government by far is the most non-political, diverse and progressive government in the history of Bangladesh. We know good things are ahead of us. We will make a great Bangladesh where everyone irrespective of their faith and demographic will enjoy freedom of speech, security and justice.

It is very questionable if micro-credits actually reduce poverty... They tend to commodify poverty. These credits give people (often women) access to loans who otherwise wouldn't have access. But poverty is structural and intrinsic to monopoly capitalism. And these credits are designed to put huge social pressure on those taking up credit... leading to things like suicide.

    • @larabraver
      @larabraver Year ago

“Designed to put pressure…” I beg to differ. Have you heard any firsthand testimony from those who have received it?
Poverty begins in individuals and families so these people don’t care about structures, just that they can afford to now eat, start a small business and pay rent.

You're stupid. Having lived in a village for my childhood and recently moving back there i have seen Just how useful and important micro credits are. Just about everyone takes these loans to get Through troubling times.
A typical example A day labourer who dosent receive payments in time or cant find enough work will take a micro loan to pay for the families expenses and pays it back after the person can start working again.
Maybe theres a big medical bill that they cant pay immediately. They take out These small loans and pay Them back slowly. Without this service their lives would be so much more difficult.
Yes there have been many cases where taking loans have ruined the lives of people but thats true for any types of loan. This is not exclusive to micro credit system

It was to highlight this story's multiple references to this many-times sullied trophy as though it can be cited as a legitimising shorthand for virtue. To me, this displays intellectual sloppiness (unbecoming from this channel), which can sadly undermine subsequent solid journalism.

@Wraithing well let me tell you the truth as a Bangladeshi.
Dr yunus has never wanted to be in power. Never dabbled in politics seriously. And before 2008 he well respected by all the political parties
Around the 2006-8 election when the country Was going Through lots of unrest and divide dr yunus proposed to open a new party "citizens power" and asked for feedback. But due to lack of interest from eligible candidates he scrapped the idea.
And because of that... Simply because he thought about opening a independent political party the next pm sheikh Hasina who clung onto power for 4 terms started despising dr yunus. She detests having competition or getting ANY amount of criticism. Said things like "newcomers in the political arena is dangerous. They often do more harm than good"
Another politician even called him a traitor to the nation
All because he didnt like the state of Bangladeshi politics which was simple gang wars.
Since 2008 even though yunus didnt open a political party to oppose Hasina. Even though he never seriously dabbled in politics.. The Hasina government started launching false cases against him one after another. They launched 200+ cases. They spread lies over and over Again. Like accusing him of misappropriating funds given by norway.. Which Norway stepped in to clear up. Or saying his micro credit formula has ruined lives. But any sane person understands that taking loans of any kind has its risk. Still Grameen bank has had the lowest interest rate for loans in the ENTIRE WORLD
But Hasina never stopped. Dragging the 70 year old from one court to another burying him in a Ocean of judicial proceedings. But then hasina managed to kick dr yunus out of his own company the Grameen bank by citing retirement age. The crass, disgusting and disrespectful comments and behaviour continued till hasina got kicked out.
She even suggested that dr yunus Should be captured and dunked in the padma River twice. Just enough to not kill him.
Just earlier this year now that Hasina has control over the entire justice system. She was able to Have dr yunus sentenced to 6 months in jail. He got out on bail.
Hasinas behaviour of Being insanely hostile to critics and opposition did not start with dr yunus and was not limited to him either. The leader of opposition Khaleda Zia was also arrested multiple times and Then kept under house arrest for 10 years. Countless opposition politicians or personal were accused of every crime imaginable and jailed especially during election time .
Those who she Couldn't jail she used RAB. A law enforcement organisation which has the power to do whatever Hasina asks with complete immunity.
They carried out countless extrajudicial killings.forced disappearances. Kidnappings. Cia style torture chambers etc.
She also Had chatro league the student "activist" Branch of awami League. Which was in reality her personal gangster squad she used against her government. These are in every legal definition civilians. Not law enforcement but she armed them. Gave them pistols shotguns and More. Allocated huge funds to hire more 'supporters " and arm them with machetes and other weapons.
They would do drive by shootings. Home invasion to murder, ambush and assassinate whoever Hasina wanted gone.
In the streets Whenever there was protests these hasina supporters would stand Against the protesters (in reality they're charto League) and Their job was to stop the protests by force. They would start the aggression and when the situation worsens and the protests turn into brick throwing the chatro league opens fire. The police NEVER stop them. Instead the police join them and stick charge the protestors. Chatro league also charges but with guns and machetes.
Btw all the political parties has These gang like organisations and they have fought Such gangwars for decades.
This is what dr yunus criticized. But Hasina Being hasina. Lashed out at any and all Who she saw as a threat.
Just take a look at how many journalists have been killed by police/Chatro League or assassinated, kidnapped etc. Not a single election after 2008 was deemed free and fair by independent watchers and international human rights groups

We invited Yunus on our campus in the year he got his prize. Nobel prize is given for contribution to the humanity and environment not for your contribution to your country alone. But he started his speech lambasting Pakistan left and right.
Also to note is that the microfinance model he follows was actually initiated by Akhtar Hameed Khan in Comila district of Bangladesh in 1950s which he later applied in Orangi town Pakistan. You can read all about it on Wikipedia.
