- The 138th birth Anniversary of Jamshed Nusserwanjee who was the first elected Mayor of Karachi was celebrated at Jamshed Memorial Hall. He is known as the Maker of Modern Karachi. He transformed Karachi from a fishing village into the cleanest city in the region. He developed Karachi into an economically and socially worth living city. Jamshed Nusserwanjee was an enviable multifaceted personality. On his 60th Birthday in 1946, a grand function was held in his honor. The function was organized by all the 77 institutions with which Jamshed was actively connected either as a chairman, a secretary, an organizer, or an adviser joined hands in honoring Jamshed. An address of welcome was presented to him and read by Mr. Hatim A. K. Alavi. The function was a reflection of the tremendous amount of work that Jamshed did in his day-to-day life, for the promotion of human welfare without distinction of class or creed in all fields of life. You must have noticed an antique artifact which is 77 years old displayed in this hall and a picture of Jamshed Nusserwnjee with late Mayor Hatim Alvi on the occasion at the entrance of the Jamshed Memorial Hall. Out of the funds collected from friends and admirers of Jamshed on the occasion, a sum of Rs. 25,000 was presented towards the cost of construction of the world’s most wonder landship named "Jamshed Nusserwanji." for sea scouts which can be seen from Mr. Disnshw Avari’s Beach Luxury Hotel’s sea shore. This would interest ur present Mayor Murtaza Wahab Sahib what Mr. Hatim Alvi said about Jamshed in one of his speeches and I quote: "I have come to this conclusion that not one single person throughout the world can come up to the high standard of devotion and service which Jamshed set up in the Municipal Corporation. I do not know where to begin and where to end. So great was his work. He traveled hundreds of miles every day in his car and kept a watchful eye on the roads. It is due to him that Karachi became the cleanest and most beautiful city in India. He kept a high standard in the execution of work from his subordinates.
"The quotation of Mr. Hatim Alavi can be found in this book Jamshed Memorial Volume page number 215".
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab Sahib has been kind in renaming the KMC building to the Jamshed Nusserwanjee Building. He has also placed a plaque with an inscription inscribed in Urdu and the translation that reads” The Maker of Modern Karachi, First Mayor of Karachi in recognition of HONOURABLE JAMSHED NUSSERWANJEE’s services, the KMC building is being associated with his name. Now this building would be called JAMSHED NUSSERWANJEE building. Signed BARRISTERMUSTAFA WAHAB, Mayor Karachi with Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad and Members City Council dated 11th August 2023. The picture and the details of the renaming of the KMC Building to Jamashed Nusserwanjee Building are given in the flyer that the Karachi Theosophical Society has published to commemorate his 138th Birth Anniversary. Mayor Sahib, you had also commissioned a Bust of Jamshed Nusserwanjee and placed the same in your office to inspire you for the dedication and services that Jamshedji rendered to Karachi that it was during his time. The picture of the bust of the first elected Mayor with the flag of Pakistan and with Mayor Karachi sitting in his office has also been printed in the flyers.
The Theosophical society’s first objective is to form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste, or colour. The 2nd one is To encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy, and science. And the 3rd is to investigate the unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in man. The motto of The Theosophical Order of Service is "A union of those who love in the service of all that suffers." In Pakistan, the organization is doing excellent work in the field of providing quality education, promoting the Montessori system, and educating out-of-school and dropped-out children in marginalized areas of Karachi. Pakistani American Fauzia Janjua, a teacher in the USA has recently made history by being elected as the Mayor of New Jersey. It is a welcome trend to see women's options for leadership roles in society.
