This band kicks so much ass, they are genuinely good people. And you all are focusing on the grey hairs, which I can attest, he has earned every single one honestly. These guys are musical beasts, who have done everything themselves since 2000. And in that time, they have held down the music, 2-3 jobs a piece, and the Grandpa, as you all call him, is an inventor. Seriously, one of the hardest working band in the business. Go see them if they come near you, and you will change your mind.
A metal vocalist who screams so viscerally and.... you can actually understand the words he's saying. That's all I ask of metal vocalists. Pronounce your words. This band is excellent I'm gonna get into this
Found theae guys 2 years ago-one of the BEST kept secrets ever-i been listening to them every day going on 3 years now-IM A metal head professional person thats lives off metal BYSTANTINE over taking my Megadeth, Death Angel, Testament, Metallica air waves anymore
Cameron's Music and Gaming Land Man you gotta hear this whole album, if you haven't already. It's called "To Release Is To Resolve." It's a must buy, amazing from start to finish. Their new album "The Cicada Tree" is also. And if you go back to their older stuff with their original lead man, bass player and drummer, you'll find even more amazement. This band, even with a change in line-up, has been one of the greatest metal bands of the last almost 20 years, they've just not had the exposure they've deserved. Metal Blade really needs to be pushing this band as much as possible. They'd be very glad they did!
wow. a damn good prog metal band from west virginia, with duel lead vocalists, a bassist who plucks with his fingers rather than a pick, and a frontman who plays guitar left-handed this makes me very happy
I remember seeing these guys way back in the day when they were starting out. My band was also starting out, trying to play at the same place: L'amour. I'll never forget how tight these guys sounded. Glad to see that almost 20 years later they're still kicking ass.
The only reason I clicked this video is because of the band name and song title. I love to listen to bands that talk about history and historical figures.
Byzantine deserve to be much bigger. Chris and the boys are consistent, put on a great live show and have riffs for days. Like 36 Crazyfists they have a glass ceiling.
pray you are fortunate enough to do what you love at any age.. It's amazing how close-minded people are we all get old.. it's not about how young or old you are it's about how you were able to do what you love listen to what you want to listen to and enjoy it and understand it and appreciate it and Inspire others to think with an open mind
Just rediscovered this band after not having heard anything from them since they released "...and They Shall Take Up Serpents" and I'm super impressed. This is a killer song.
Absolutely brilliant work! we opened up for these guys in Chicago years back and all I can say is what an amazing band of true musicians and Stand Up Guys. Definitely a band that doesn't get the recognition they should, that's for sure
Exactly! I saw them on their 1st tour and they are one of the tighter live metal acts I've seen and I have been to a helluva lot of concerts. They slay.
I've never heard of this band before but I love this video. Old dudes and young dudes brought together by their love of music; metal music, no less. There's something about the simplicity of just 4 guys in a room making a great song. Well done, guys!
Funny thing they are all within 5 years of each other, except the new drummer. He is a baby. Seriously good shit. They do a cover of Pisschrist that is on Spotify, and you can get on disk from Europe. Check it out. They do Pisschrist and Dam that River by Alive in Chains.
saw these guys live maybe 10 or 12 years ago with god forbid. never heard of them before that and i remember being blown away after their set. glad to see they still kick so much ass
Once upon a time, I saw these guys at William & Mary (yes you read that right). It was amazing, and I've become a life long fan! So happy to see you all keep on making music! Super excited for the new album coming soon!
wow, you all definitely put on a great show in spite of that! I look forward to seeing you live again sometime soon. One of my buddies got to see you all in Austin, which I'm still jealous about.
That was some of the best songwriting I've heard in a long long time. I loved the middle section. It was like going to another planet for a few minutes. A++
OJ is and always will be the King of the underground, wise, heart, soul and powerful, I am amazed even after all this time, and thank you so much for all that you and rest of the guys have done for me in my life
What the fuck man... Why does this song just ring so perfectly in my ears? Maybe it just matches well with my personal tone auditory cortex and it's different for other people. Whatever the reason this is going to be the new number one on my playlist for the foreseeable next few months.
it blows my mind how these guys arent on or at least near the top of the bill for every multi band tour there is. Byzantine is the definition of "deserves more recognition"
Super tight LIVE act, and an awesome, underappreciated band in general. Love Byzantine. So happy I saw them live in Philly, Pa at the First Unitarian Church, memories.
Saw you guys play at the international with testament and anthrax. Best show I've been to in a long time. You guys are underrated really loved your set keep the good work.🤘🤘🤘
I'm pissed! Why the *_fuck_* am I now just getting into this band? I was looking up groove metal bands on Wikipedia and found this band, along with a few others (Pissing Razors was dope!). I really need to look into Byzantine more now.
If Pantera,Lamb of God and old Opeth(before M.Akerfeldt turned 70's Prog) had a baby together,it would sound like this, very cool band. Emperor Justinian would approve. ;-)
@@MoveInSilence23 don't you think it's a shame that byzantium is not that mainstream? there are 50 movies of henry viii and how many of..... heraclius for example? you can also add me on discord to talk about byzantium : Proletariado#4420
The whole track roars but damn 3:00 forward i was like "take me down that weary road fellas..." Absolutely one of my favorite squads homie! I took their sound with me when the war kicked off in iraq... things that didn't make sense to me out there, they helped it make sense.... they helped put names and faces on my demons forreal... other things that made sense when i didn't want them to, they fucked it all up for me so i could get my job done. Among many others these were my muthafukkas, dare i say i truly needed them. Now look at em' all neatened up and shit, and can still make pondwater crash around like tsunami waves.
I too took them overseas. Afghanistan was the destination. Their music helped get ya pumped up for what lied ahead. Listening to the Byz took away the fear of the unknown outside the wire. Instead when you went out the wire and seen the last sign say go red, you felt like a badass and that nothing is gonna stand in your way. Only Metal can do that. When we were on the road... we owned them. Nothing would stand in our way. When we deployed.. Byzantine deployed with us.
discovered u guys years back and ive been hooked ever since and i try and keep my music taste ever changing but my god i come back to u guys and listen like its my first time.... every time. this level of song writing is a hard thing to come across, and those vocals....... OJ has to be more recognized in metal this guy shreds and sings the like of which hasnt been done since chuck in death ..... and then he hits warrell dane (nevermore) notes and devin townsend shouts .......... yall need more Byzantine in ur life.
The lead vocalist was just at my house no bullshit I'll see if I can put the picture on Google+ btw the band members all have normal jobs so that's the reasoning behind why he was there
Straight White Guy used to be friends with him back when I lived in West Virginia. I moved to Florida tho, and the biggest things I miss is tudors biscuit world and Byzantine lol
I actually went to school with the drummer Matt Bowels. We grew up together. Even played together as toddlers/kids at church at an old ass church building that use to be a one room school house back in the day. They come out the 304, the Dub V, the West-By-God-Virginia! They all down to earth regular guys. \m/
criminally underrated.
Sammy Evans it truly disappoints me
When your dad walks in while you’re jamming with your buddies and says “I used to play a little back in the day.”
This made me laugh 😂

Coolest dad of all time

Still one of the most underrated bands in the genre
Went here from the Byzantine Empire Subject, I don't regret clicking and by the way...

ALL HAIL BYZANTIUM !!!!
I just came from a quarantine cover of Shortest Straw... First time hearing a Byzantine song. DAMN these guys are good!
I just did the same. I, unfortunately, have never heard of these guys. Now I have to find and listen to their catalog. I am very impressed.

Why is everyone calling Chris Ojeda old?? He's only 41.. and why would age be an issue or even be acknowledged while enjoying his musical skill?

the 8 minutes and about 7 seconds of my life was not wasted thanks to this amazing piece of musical art.

John Jingleheimer jeremiad still the best tho
I cannot believe I never got into Byzantine. I am a new fan as of right now.

You said nothing about the drummer. He's a fucking beast
I'm glad that Byzantine is finally on a major record label, again. Hopefully they will get the proper support this time.
I didn't think I was going to be able to hang for 8 minutes but damn is that some good song writing.
bro if you don't know bout these guys. catch up on their catalog. guarentee you'll love it
Best American metal band out there. GO BYZ!!
New Mastodon?
Byzantine has been slaughtering Mastodon and everybody else for 17 years.
This is exactly what I just explained my buddy .
As a fellow Mountaineer I approve of this! I can't believe you guys are from my homestate wicked! Review incoming
I have to say that I had really low expectations for this band, but was totally blown away. Fantastic song! I miss metal like this.
Thanks for digging us, Felipe!

I love it! A band called Byzantine with a front-man that looks like he'd be a Greek philosopher if he threw on a toga.
Excellent comment!
Lol
The only reason I clicked this video is because of the band name and song title. I love to listen to bands that talk about history and historical figures.
*a chiton. Togas are roman!

Top of the list of underrated metal bands...
How am i just now hearing these guys probably one of the best metal compositions ive ever heard
West Virginia native here. 🤘🏻
Wow. Why am I just now hearing of these guys? This is perfection.

Hendo with his cherry red guitar 🎸 kills me to this day . Hellva guy and fucking wicked guitarist .
Props to West Virginia heavy metal! Byzantine, Karma to Burn, Horseburner, etc.

You guys are awesome! My father is from Charleston, WV which was like my second home growing up. It's great to see an awesome metal band from WV!
Wow, this is fantastic, first time listener 👍👍👍
I hate clean vocal haters. Byzantine is a badass band. Period!
Screams suck, clean and harsh vocals are both good
wow!!!! first time listening this band, im blown away, really awesome!!!
saw these guys live maybe 10 or 12 years ago with god forbid. never heard of them before that and i remember being blown away after their set. glad to see they still kick so much ass

What an incredible new lineup Ojeda has put together. Great chemistry! That bass player is epic. \m/
Such an underrated band, they should have gained more visibility in the past. This last record sounds amazing to me.
Once upon a time, I saw these guys at William & Mary (yes you read that right). It was amazing, and I've become a life long fan! So happy to see you all keep on making music! Super excited for the new album coming soon!
We broke up on the way home from that show! HA!

These guys are so consistently good. Awesome!
West Virginia boys JAMMING! You hear me? Straight jamming! I'm from Carolina and they are like me!

Wow, really good!!!! This is metal.
Love the whole song. From 3:06 is magic!! ♥️♥️
Man I love this band.
And thats the recipe for a good music video. Good music and just a bunch of guys doing what they love..... playing music.
I'm on a Byz binge. 🤘
Nothing wrong with that
love the production. lots of honk and mids in the guitars, nice lean gain structure. you can actually hear everything.

Been years since I've heard a singer that i liked, this dude sounds awesome, love his voice 🤘
Ive always been a fan, nadir album is golden.

These guys have got it going on, I'm definitely going to look into buying an album
Super tight LIVE act, and an awesome, underappreciated band in general. Love Byzantine. So happy I saw them live in Philly, Pa at the First Unitarian Church, memories.

Woowwwww....now THAT is one hell of a show lineup!
I was baptized at st Georges Byzantine Catholic Church
Love the '304' t-shirt OJ!!!
I also like that the bass player is using fingers, not a pick.
I never understood why that matters if it's about how good the music sounds. What's wrong with picks on bass?
@@brucenatelee
right! I used to a shit about that when I was 15 years old lmao
Wow
Wtf 54 year old metal head
Just hearing of these cats WOW WOW !!!!!!! Love it
Goddamn I love this song! Talented group of guys.
I didn't know Sir Davos The Onion Knight fronted a heavy metal band
Mungasaurus Bravo wrong, this was what Ser Janos Slynt put together on his way to the wall

I saw these guys in a lil venue in Williamsburg VA in the early 2000's. it was an enjoyable show
Get em OJ! Proud to be from WV and have had the privilege to have heard these guys multiple times in Charleston. Also, I fixed his weedeater one time.
Such an incredibly underrated and inventive band. Much Respect.
