  • We're no strangers to making errors when we're distracted, so we've put together a small trailer for a quality improvement project by Dr Faisal Aijaz at ‪@LeicesterHospitalsNHS‬ on reducing interruptions for senior decision-makers in the Emergency Department by collating less time-critical documentation into a single senior review 📑⏱
Healthcare is a complex and continually adaptive system, in which Emergency Department (ED) physicians have to multitask between clinical and clerical tasks. The senior decision-maker in the ED has multiple responsibilities while they are on the shop floor, which includes situational awareness, leading the team, and responsibility for the flow and management of the patients in their area.
Working in this way means that Emergency physicians have to multitask and task switch. Multitasking and task switching are two different entities, and both can lead to either incompletion of the primary task and increased errors or mistakes. A senior clinical decision-maker in the ED needs to make critical and timely decisions regarding the care of their patients. Such decision-making can be adversely affected if they get interrupted.
Understanding the science behind interruptions and distractions is beyond the scope of this quality improvement project, but it is increasingly essential in making healthcare safer and more effective. We know from evidence that different clinical environments are likely to experience different levels of distraction and subsequent error. The Emergency Department and Operating Theatres are amongst the highest at risk of making errors due to distraction.

Accurately illustrates the recurring interruptions during patient discussion reviews, reducing focus and concentration, with potential for patient harm.
