YES!!!! I sent this game to James years ago. And I know it's my copy, because I saw Mike grab the booklet for Tomcat Alley, which I also packed in with the game.
Tomcat Alley was the pack-in for my Sega CD, and it didn't have a long case of its own. Since Tomcat Alley was equally unplayable, I decided to toss it in as a faux bonus.
I was sad that you guys didn't show the photo copy of my warranty card, but it's probably way faded by now.
I got Supreme Warrior in a dollar bin at Best Buy back in 1996. (OMG! Twenty years ago!) I've often said that it was the worst dollar I ever spent. Finally, after all these years, I feel like my dollar has been vindicated.
+Neil Purcell Well thanks for the donation that made this video possible.
+Neil Purcell Thanks for the share!
Thanks for helping make this possible. 😎👍
+Neil Purcell - Congratulations for sending him the game! :D
+avideogamemaster I'm guessing at 0:47, but we're only seeing it from the back.
About the wires, I believe the answer is that the cables were erased in post production. Painting out the wires frame by frame! - Mike
+Cinemassacre I believe they are just real martial artists that learned how to fly.
Hey mike just wondering why do you do so much of the content on this channel it started out as James's and now it's like he's just in the videos and your running the channel? Also any big plans for 2million subscribers that's awesome!
Thanks, Mike. It was bugging me too. I'm going to have to look this up further though. Because isn't film clear? How would you paint a clear film?
I think they would have had an easy time editing those out, The resolution of the sega cd was so shitty, they probably fired up an early version of Photoshop, selected the blur brush and Boom! blurred the rope out no problem. I think an early nineties Microsoft Paint could even do in a pinch
Pearson Brennan Yes, but they're referring to classic Kung Fu movies, not specifically the game.
I'm not defending the game, but at the same time, the "Duh!" realization after only a few seconds of gameplay should have been "This is an FMV game, so I can't just randomly punch away to get results. There must be only a few points where I can do something, and it cuts to either a scene of me getting hit, or a scene of me hitting. You can't stop a scene in the middle." With that realization, even from the get-go, it should have been at least possible to focus solely on the on-screen prompts instead of button-mashing.
+Rationalific I've been getting the feeling they seem to purposely play games wrong because they think it's funnier.
+SANAFABICH They're high af, also they're obviously having fun. both of those things might impede how someone grasps the core concept of a game which basically makes no sense. They did figure it out, as well. Are we watching the same video?
Rule #1 of cinemassacre: In action games, James must always kill every enemy on screen, even if it is not helpful in the current situation.
Rule #2 of cinemassacre: In fighting games, the only way to play for James and Mike is constant button mashing.
Rule #3 of cinemassacre: They suck at all games that are not 2D platformers and don't have the patience to actually learn how a to play anything else.
Actually, I don't think the guys played a lot of video games after their childhood, so they still play them like a child would :)
+DOSRetroGamer Even with the quick time events..it looks so ridculous that it makes someone look sick.
I would play something better over this and I bet there are much games better than this for sure. Some games just aren't in Mike and James style I guess
Anytime James gets his butt kicked Mike always laughs uncontrollably
I mean, he *was* the joker in the Batman episodes of avgn...
damn James... ever consider that this game might not be a buttonmasher? you were right about it being like Dragon's Lair... well, did you mash buttons in Dragon's Lair? it doesn't work there either
To me, it's not immediately obvious what kind of moves you are supposed to do and when exactly you are supposed to do them. I don't necessarily blame them on this one.
James is hardwired to mash buttons on any game involving hand to hand (or foot) combat in any form. For a game that's practically a long series of quick time events that cannot work.
I honestly wonder how he ever managed to successfully play Punch Out :)
They both do that for EVERY game....
Having worked on set in the early 2000s with stunt guys from Paramount, they do in fact use cables and in post production use a technique known as "rotoscoping" to remove the cables, frame by frame.
my uncle used to work in Hong Kong movie studios back in the early 80s, and I been to the sets of action films to watch him work. What they did was that they calculated what the trajectory path was going to be, then they tied many many fishing lines to the main cable/wire that is hooked on to the actor. On the leap/swing of the actor, the crew will have many men pull the fishing wires on the sequences of the calculated plan until the actor reached the landing zone and they will call it cut right there. However, this method does had their flaws, the fishing lines would snaps/breaks a lot of the time, and I mean a lot of the time. This is where the calculations came in to allow for margins of fails during the trajectory of the shot that would allow the action to still look good enough to use with backup pulling lines from an acute enough angle. Most of the they would have to redo a lot of the takes if the directors say it's not good enough even with the already calculated margin for the fishing line failures.
Don't know if this is helpful enough info to you.
It's just like Punch-Out with improved graphics! The only thing that's missing is good controls, gameplay, and being fun.
This is so real it's like better than PS4 graphics. Oh wait.. it's because it is real, lol.
No wonder it doesnt work but would love to give it a try
I'm glad this game didn't change the future of the fighting genre.
+Intimidation*cough* fighter within *cough*
But I'm pretty sure these games would exist without Supreme Warrior. Also, they are somewhat of an anomaly. So your objection to the OP does not make a lot of sense as his statement is still true.
+DOSRetroGamer how do you know inspiration wasn't drawn from this? it probably wasn't but you never know. a lot of products are derived from the ideas of previous failed attempts. my comment wasn't intended to be serious anyone so you can stop the fun one at parties thing.
Great, as I never get invited to parties anyway lol
+Intimidation Just give it time, the PS VR and Oculus will get on it!
I think the black guy you fought may have been the shogun of harlem.
+drweetabix Sho'Nuff?
kiss my converse foo!!!
+Wrath's Attack SHO'NUFF!
"Catches bullets with his teeth?!?!.....nigga pleaseeee!"
oatmeal
Do you guys record these episodes in one long session? Just wondering
+PrematureMailbox Yes, we usually shoot 4-5 episode in a day once a month! Then I take the footage and edit it down! - Mike
+PrematureMailbox Just match their clothing in the episodes to figure out which videos are from the same session.
+Sunschamp2012 So this is what Aspberger's looks like in writing.
+Sunschamp2012 It's good that James spends quality time with his family!
+The Sega Saviour Or perhaps you could look at large quantity of videos they put up in the past couple of months and think maybe they're taking a break?
something tells me this wouldn't make it to EVO
Would be a fun side event though. Watching the pros trying to play it would be a laugh.
+Samuel Mumby Agreed. Get some of the best players in the world and see how they fare at crappy fighting games.
+Jeremy Seal Well the thing is James is right. This isn't really a fighting game. It's basically a Dragon's Lair style game where if you push the button at the right time, the "good" scene will follow. It's essentially what we now call a Quick Time Event, only that's literally the entire game.
That said, absolutely agreed with you both in that it'd be a blast to watch.
+arbitor365 there should be an event to make these people play crappy games. that would be amusing
+BioPhoenix They actually do have this! (Or they used to anyway). They choose a "mystery" game that they know no one knows how to play and then see who can figure it out fastest.
You guys skipped the tutorial.
I love that the guy is still punching and kicking rapidly even when he's being pushed back from the impact of the opponents punch.
3:38 another gif in the making
All the fights look like gifs.
+Ryan Amberger I think he's talking about Mike
+Jordan Cowell and James.
+Zachary Erickson (twilightwindwaker) lmao thank you
+Ahmed Connor lol
I really like these videos, i just wish they were longer than 7 or 9 minutes :-/ maybe at least 10 or 12
+scottydu81 Well, I edited another episode which is coming out later today! So you should be happy =D -Mike
thank you! i love when you guys reply to comments. i feel so loved :-)
About your comment.... I lieked it liek mudkipz
+scottydu81 I feel like they're not even trying to play the non-Nintendo games though. They just pretty much seem to mash buttons and criticize nearly everything non-Nintendo.
Mike has some sick moves. I wouldn't wanna fight him.
I would fight him in a "Brawl For All" Match lol

How's copy and paste working for you?
+DownForwardPunch Me?
+Sean Carter To make it clear, someone else had this same exact comment 3 hours BEFORE this Sean kid copied and pasted it word for word. You, Sir, are lame.
+GamerFriend X I'm Spartacus.
One of the funniest episodes in some time. This game is too hilarious.
Mike “four hands and a head” Matei is really becoming the star of this channel. While at first I was on the fence about him, Mike has really grown on me. While I love James Rolfe it’s obvious Mike Matei is much more of a gamer. He’s chill to watch on his live streams and beats hard games. Jekyll and Hyde, Ninja Gaiden, TMNT… Mike also seems somewhat more interested than James with modern gaming playing stuff for PC. Mike if you read this, you’ve come a long way and I look forward to your content! Thanks for editing all these videos each week!
I agree I was on the fence about mike to but he grew on me to
+Phil Hardy I just wish hed upload more of his livestreams on the extras channel, no RUclips Gaming here
gotta love when mike and james review games from this period (1990-1995).
So many good games back then, but so much shit as well XD
All of those old martial arts movies were made using captive, mind controlled aliens who live under the empire state building. They didn't need strings because they can use telepathy to greatly speed up the rotation of the planet while in mid air, producing the illusion of miraculous leaps. Don't any of you watch the history channel?
The way I see it, the fighting in this game used quick time events. it isn't about mashing buttons randomly, but timing your actions to an icon that flashes on the screen. Aside from that, the game still sucks
FOLLOW THE PROMPTS!!!!!
Loved this game when it came out. I can beat everyone but the final boss. This and Prize Fighter are truly unique games, for better or worse.
I think someone, maybe Gamepro had a special on the production of the game that went into the use of the string/stunt work. I'm kind of a fan...
I know it's not saying much, but this is actually one of the better FMV games of the era. Hell, it even stars Vivian Wu in one of her earliest roles. It's funny how back in the mid 90's developers were certain that this was the future of gaming.
Even if the game seems unplayable, the concept is quite cool.
Maybe with a tutorial and an slower start, it could have worked better.
or some animated characters.
PLEASE PLAY CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH FOR THE PS1!!!
One of the methods used to hide wire-work in film before digital editing was they would paint the film frame by frame to cover the wire. They could paint the wires and use lighting techniques to minimize their appearance during the filming, but to fully remove them they had to go frame by frame painting on the film to edit it out.
Exactly 💯 This is how it was done in a lot of old martial arts movies. I was surprised that James didn't know that.
U think that's hard to wrap ur head around, what about Muppets riding bicycles? How did they do that!?
Wait a minute, are you saying that Kermit isn't real?
You never can go wrong with a Tom Zito FMV game! :)
This is definitely one of my favorite James & Mike Mondays episodes! I love it when James and Mike laugh! :)
this had me laughing the hardest I've laughed in the longest time. Im literally crying XD You've got to think the game designers thought this was revolutionary when it came out LOL
they stole the music from Samurai Showdown. how'd they get away with that?
haohmaru stage music
+damon page
And they ripped the SNES version of the music, can't even steal it right.
+damon page I agree, I recognize that music anywhere. It's such a shame too not to mention Samurai Shodown was also released for the Sega CD as well.
This is my favorite Mike and James mondays episode, it's so funny I want to see them learning how to play that game
if the game was actually responsive, it be super fun to play on some kind of vr headset
I've never laughed as hard as I did at 5am. Mikes laugh and commentary are both infectious and hilarious.
James and Mike this might be the funniest video you've ever done. when Mike is laughing and saying "you're getting your ass kicked" it's so genuine and you can feel your chemistry as friends.
I played this a bit back in the day and managed to defeat everyone except the final boss Fang Tu. It was frustrating, but once you used to controls it was okay. It was a definite step up from Prize Fighter which in my opinion was the worst FMV game ever released.
I loved this game with a passion and beat it many times.
Guys you don't need a huge cable to lift a human body they make fishing line that is 200-250 lb capacity some even more for like swordfishing
what an abomination of a game, this could have been an angry nerd video.
Watching James play this is like watching someone try to play Dragon's Lair like Mario Bros.
James and Mike's laughs are too contagious.
James: If I don't know the controls I'm going to spam every single button as fast as I can and hope something sticks.
Loving it.
I know they can take out wires by hand, frame by frame, but I imagine they try to avoid that as much as possible and plan out shots where the wire won't show up .
Oh, I remember this game from one of the AVGN episodes. This was one of the "more intresting ones" when he reviewed the Sega CD.
I'm glad you returned to this one again. Wish I could try it too.
Haohmaru's theme from Samurai Shodown in the background.
Oh god, the player character's fighting stance. Seriously what's wrong with him? Oh wait it must be a classic kung fu stance called "eating a sandwich"
How does someone make a game by just recording love action? What is this some kind of DVD (er CD) Game!?!
+C.Funk99 "recording love action"
( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡ ͡o ͜ ʖ ͡ ͡o)
+C.Funk99 Love action sounds like a dirty game.
Those old FMV games are hilariously awful...
Oh Christ all mighty! What a bad fucking game, it's just horrible!! HAHAHAHA
I go from funhaus for hilarious offensive gaming to AVGN for chill classic couch gaming. Love it.
I guess Mike's never heard of the Zeno Clash series...
Or Snk's The Super Spy.
+David Richard Zeno Clash is a really good game, and has a good story too, I don't know about the 2nd one haven't played it yet.
Or Breakdown for the original Xbox.
No one's heard of Zeno Clash that ish is obscure as hell.
3:22 to 3:46 is the funniest 24 seconds in the history of Cinemassacre.
I read that a lot of early wire work involved coating the wires in an acid solution that made them more difficult to see, at the expense of wire strength. Visually complex backgrounds, lighting and camera exposure probably all had something to do with it as well. When wires were too bulky to be hidden or disguised, they would airbrush them out, applying acrylic paint directly onto the processed film - a very slow and laborious process requiring highly skilled artists. Wire removal on Superman the Movie in 1978 was apparently done in this way.
Tom Zito is responsible for some serious FMV garbage games.
They seem high.
Nope.
The kicks are so ridiculous lol. It's like a foot on a stick.
You guys should do and upload some Mario Maker levels!
I had it for 3d0 and my buddy had it for sega cd. I remember mine having a better resolution and was just overal better. The game is all memory based. Once you get the patterns memorized you'll crush your opponent. Also use the special moves which will help you advance and beat the tougher fighters.
Cole MacGrath pretty much yeah.
aww hell james, I can hear you smashing buttons like a maniac immediately after you note that you're supposed to hit the right buttons at the right times ala DDR. C'Mon!!
Best game of the 32x CD, I forget the controls, I remember they were tedious to learn but the game itself is great. Supreme Warrior really is a classic.
I've beat it numerous times back when the game came out. I wanna play it now :)
When are they going to play Fox Hunt? I was so mad when I bought that game around Christmas time in 1996 for PlayStation.
Nylon string is really strong and I suppose you can hide it by using white surexposure, because in old movies, white or light parts of the image tend to "eat" the rest of it.
I wouldn't want Mike as a friend. Some guy is kicking the living shit out of me and he's just standing there laughing at me. :D
Wuah Ah, Ah ,Ah Ah! 🐒
Get up, come on get down with the sickness!
Metal-Ronin Samurai
Good man
I thought this was a great game. Once you get used to the timing, you can really sink your teeth into it. As you start understanding those marks that show you the openings (Which were the training wheels... Those were only on in easy mode if I recall, maybe easy and normal) then you can basically memorize the fights. The last boss was a difficulty spike; made beating the game feel like a helluva accomplishment.
I want to see more NES games :D
You know would be funny? Having James and Mike play a Monster High game for the next James & Mike Mondays.
git gud guys... once you realize that this and many other of the 32XCD titles are basically one long QTE, these games become much easier to play and beat. I actually really enjoyed this game back in the day. Beat it several times. If you string together enough clean moves you can do a combo move that is really just a movie where the camera backs up so you can see your player beating them up.
the Scottie Pippen basketball game was similar. You can learn the "tells" and find ways to juke past people for the dunk almost every time.
It's not "string" they use, it's piano wire, which is ungodly strong. As to how you hide them, movie craftsmen know how to do that stuff.
For instance, it takes 22 wires to manipulate King Ghidorah WITH a man inside the costume. You may see one or two wires once in a rare while, but you don't see all 22 moving that thing.
Also, you can't just make a broad comment like "Kung Fu movies needed strings". Not all of them did. But often they pieced together like someone jumping off a roof and played it in reverse when the roofs weren't that high. The long shot high jump shots were a later technique in Kung Fu movies anyways.
Opening music for the vid is Ukyo Tachibana's theme from the original Samurai Shodown (sp?!) game, I believe. HAHA! It also sounds like Jubei Yamada Yagyu's theme...
This is an awful use of music from Samurai Shodown. I'd rather hear just you guys and no music at all if this game is really that bad.
Oh my god. I remember game like this a long time ago when I was a kid but I played it on my PC. I was like literally 3 or 4 so I don't remember what it was exactly. But I remember kicking with purple pants so this is got to be it, Sega ports games to PC all the time so this would make sense. God damn I thought this game was super cool back then but no I was wrong lol
I'm having trouble recoding famicom 2 and JP Turbo Duo,any tips ? the colour and sound are messed up when i use my PVR box? sorry it not related to this video more the king kong famicom episode.
I own this also, but not very memorable.
Funny thought: Imagine those actors who play the fighters had to permanently punch, kick, fight and taunt nothing else but a camera that was recording them.
That must have looked really silly.
They should have made this a 'bullying simulator"....make all the actors more preppy, same controls and gameplay. You start the game, then get your ass beat while you struggle to control your on body.....just like getting bullied in real life.
In the original version of A New Hope, Luke's landspeeder was actually on a cart. Because this was before digital editing, they removed the cart by putting vaseline on the camera lense to hide it. Maybe they did that with the strings in martial arts movies - or, they just painted over the frames
I love discussions on String Theory!
This game is not that hard, you punch or kick in that 'direction' at the same time that symbol appears (you see a foot at the top, you kick and press up at same time to hit). There are clearly a pattern to the enemies like any other game. Although it's not exactly a good game by today's standards you played it very badly lol come on now. I though it was fairly intuitive for it's time.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
― Bruce Lee
Fuckin magnets. How do they work?
Okay, by far the best part of this video is Mike just cackling about James getting his ass kicked....
Reminded me of Blinkin in Men in Tights "watching" Robins back...
They might have had a focus group with every person who owned a 32X and a mega cd, and both of them OKd it?
Prize Fighter, imo, is one of the worst FMV games ever made. It's absolutely broken in almost every way. It's similar to this but it doesn't even have much to laugh at, too.
As a kid my brother had some very strong metal cable that was quite thin. He tied it from a post on one side of the street to a post in the other side. A car drove past and the cable ripped off the windshield wipers and cracked the windshield. My brother had to pay for it. He's lucky a biker didn't ride into it and get decapitated
Tried playing through this a few weeks ago, and it is BRUTALLY difficult. Also, the discs on the Sega CD were mislabled.
There were many different ways the wires were not seen. One was painting them out in post. Sometimes the wires were so thin you couldn't make them out on the film of the day. other times they would cut and matte a different frame over the wires..but by hand instead of computers. But you can make out the wires at times.
The worst games make the BEST James and Mike Mondays!
Do you think they manually edited each frame of film to remove the strings? Ah yes... Mike commented two years ago, that that was his conclusion.
Ah new video from James and Mike - click the video - click like - watch the video. :-) This is sort of Mad Dog Mccree gameplay.
Zeno Clash is the evolution of this game
"Press C to Not Die By Those Crazy Warriors" the game...
They didn't need to hide any strings - those guys really could fly!
;-)
I'm not sure which controller they are using however this is another one of those fighting games where the Sega Genesis 6 button controller would make the game easier to play
This is a perfect AVGN game. Ass!
That one guy James fought with the green paint around his eyes reminds me of Sho Nuff
it would be easier to learn the ways of the force and magicaly fly than to paint the strings out frame by frame.
Supreme Warrior was certainly a novel concept-- but concept only goes so far if the execution isn't good. Another Tom Zito "classic".
I think you Mickey had a better chance fighting Drago (in your James & Mike episode featuring Rocky for PS2) than either of you winning a fight here.
