Lived in paterson during the late 70s,80s,and left sometime late 80s because it was getting rough . I remember going to eastside park and they actually had goats and deer that you could feed and pet the animals . they had water fountains, families having picnics , it was very nice then . I can't believe what i saw in this video so sad .
word …they had goats and deer at east side park!! my grandmother lived about a mile from there on 14th ave….with all the stories my family told me they never mentioned that …
Breaks my heart... left Paterson over 50 years ago. Went to Central H.S. , half a dozen or more movie theaters, parades, planters peanut man on main and Broadway giving free samples, Libby's Lunch, Falls View, the stadium, graduated P.S. #5 in 1960... You know what... even after viewing this video, I still miss the old Paterson...Even more now. It WAS a great city. Of course I lived in Hillcrest section, but also on Benson St. (long gone to the projects) and West Broadway. You can't shock a Jersey guy. :-) To think... Hamilton, George Washington and General Lafayette had a picnic on top of the falls way back then and came up with the idea to make Paterson the place to start of the Industrial Revolution... "Silk City" forever! (Live in Florida now... very little "history")
So what happened to the Paterson City DPW street cleaners that used to come around once a week when I was a kid??? Somebody doesn't give a crap anymore, but doesn't hesitate to point a finger at the people and blame them. Not to say that a little pride might go a long way. Call City Hall and ask when the sanitation trucks will be around, so the garbage can be ready for pick-up. Yeah... RIGHT! I guess I'm just out of touch since moving away so long ago. Sorry. :-(
The state of these roads, no excuse for a government that has the wealth of the USA and the economic might of the dollar behind it to let any roads in any corner of the country get this bad.
I was born and raised here I will never put down the place where I came from because greatness has come from here a graduate of Eastside high school and a nurse, raised my family here. It's sad to see that people dont care about where they live but I do care and no matter where you go there is a "Paterson " somewhere. Again I will never put down where I live you just have to want to do better.
I'm from philly and I commented this on one of those videos but it's probably the same in this place. Homeless people often go out on trash day and rip up all of the trash bags looking for metal to sell (you hear them pushing their shopping carts like 2 or 3 in the morning when there's no activity outside). It happens like every week so everyone is beyond used to it/annoyed by it but won't do anything. It's not even good money either which is the annoying part.
Bums me out to see that guy towards the end of the video, texting and walking. He has all brand new clothes on including brand new Tims. I get it.. the impulse to look rich when you’re poor. I grew up valuing that too. It’s a dead end culture and it keeps poor people poor. When you’re that guy’s age, $200 worth of clothing could be a $180 car payment or a savings account deposit and a $20 trip to goodwill. But Goodwill will get you laughed at in a hood like this. Shame.
@@justinthomaskraus Fake it till you've squandered the best years of your life wasting money looking rich while guaranteeing poverty for yourself later.
Born and raised in Paterson and I moved away when life moved me on , Came back to see the old house and neighborhood and not one person could tell me when the earth quake hit! What a shame.
Yep that's about what I saw when I drove through Paterson: bunch of able-bodied adults standing in their own garbage in the middle of the day. I saw groups literally standing in garbage on the curb
Same here. Out of curiosity, and boredom from being stuck home during the pandemic, I decided to take a ride through Paterson to see what it’s like. I have never seen so much garbage on the street as I saw there. And the banks of the river by Great Falls is just one big sea of trash.
I currently live in Paterson and sadly it is filled with trash all around the city and there are very few amount of areas that are clean and sanitary for the public.

There's a lot of corruption in Paterson. Former Mayor Torres was arrested for fraud and corruption. His brother owns a liquor store on Broadway and Summer St. Right in front of that store is where all of alcoholics and drug addicts hang out. The city officials don't give two shits about this place.
I live here and i can tell you, there's no fixing these people. I've seen them throw trash on the sidewalk while standing right next to a 50gal garbage can.
People that didn’t realize their worth yet, but when they wake up. Paterson would be close to NY

The sad thing about Paterson is that its pretty much completely hopeless. At least Newark, East Orange, JC and even Camden have a FIGHTING CHANCE of improving since they're very close to major cities; this place will never gentrify. When those other hoods start to gentrify; they're gonna push most of their poor into the far out hoods like Paterson and Trenton making them even worse.
@@H3D3RA 10-15 miles is not really considered "close" as far as gentrification is concerned; and the public transit from Paterson to NYC (specifically Midtown & Downtown) is still not that great. Closer-in cities like Passaic, Hackensack, Newark, EO, Union City, Greenville/Communipaw (JC) and Elizabeth would have to almost fully gentrify first before the broader market even begins to look at Paterson as a feasible option; and these cities are either in the early stages of gentrification or haven't even begun their transition yet. I do wish Paterson the best though..
Paterson looked like this 50 years ago and there were a couple of worse neighborhoods than what you are showing. My grandparents lived here and I was born here.
@@stephenheath8465 I never said that I thought Camden would gentrify. The chances of either Camden or Paterson gentrifying within our lifetime are very slim. HOWEVER, if one does gentrify first (in the far future) then it would be Camden since it has a very close proximity to a major job center (downtown Philly). This is the first thing gentrifyers look for. Before Paterson can gentrify: Newark, Orange/EO, Irvington, Elizabeth, Union City, Hackensack and Passaic have to gentrify first (since they are all much closer to Manhattan than Paterson); and most of these places haven't even BEGUN gentrifying. Newark and UC are in their infancy of gentrification.
If anything, Paterson will probably get worse throughout the next few decades since the poor ppl in those other places I named will need to be pushed somewhere once they gentrify. A few will leave for other regions like down south but most will stay in Jersey..... Paterson, Trenton and Atlantic City will probably take the brunt of them.
i remember him saying baltimore and parts of philly in another videos comments but remember, hes from detroit so itll take quite a bit to look bad to him
I grew up there , went to school 5 and Passaic county tech. Work hard , stay away from so called friends ( if it feels wrong it usually is ) STUDY HARD and take route 80 west anywhere. Just get out

If you want to see an offset check out Baltimore. Huge rats are running across the street in front of beamers and other really nice cars. Also the graffiti is pretty sick.
I went to Fenwick house in Paterson on market street. Crazy days , was way better then being in prison, we saw a lot just looking out the windows. As a matter of fact we always use to watch everyone from the windows...it was the closest thing to being a part of society again. Thank you for this video. Keep up the amazing work.
Less than 5 mins in was basically my exact route when I had a drug problem and would walk thru there to meet my dealer. Not proud of it at all but I will say that as a hispanic kid that looks like and often gets confused for a white person, for the most part I was left alone and I would go from all times of day from really early in the morning to 10pm at night, but never later than that. Only common thing that would happen to me was constant homeless people and crackheads begging for money. The homeless/drug addict problem over there has gotten so much worse over the years. I am a lucky son of a Bitch I never got robbed or my ass kicked or arrested. So very lucky. Nothing bothered me more than the crackheads that would post up outside my bank or anyone else's bank. Legit thinking someone is gonna hand them money from an ATM that only dishes out 20s & 100s. I never understood that.
My home town... Different place about a decade before I was born... Textile and silk industry in Paterson hadn't moved down South yet to bust the Unions, and even after that, it only took them about 30 or so years before everything got Unionized again! Then it was all off to Asia! --- 2:07 - That White Castle on the right on Broadway after the Straight St. intersection back in the 60s used to be one of the very few drive-in White Castles in existence... They switched to eat-in sometime in the mid 70s... There's a few other places I recognize, but really cannot recall much about now...By day, most of Paterson isn't so bad... By night, it's a different story!
Went to see a 1 bedroom for rent and just put it this way I was concerned about leaving my car parked as I went upstairs..so I Never viewed the place and wasted about 4 hours total plus tolls gas and energy 🤦
This could be a historic district with all of those huge older homes....too bad it's gotten to this sad state.. hope it turns around into an up and coming community.
omfg dude, i'm on the east coast of Canada and if i drive around and show you my city you wouldn't believe it isn't yours. the houses the streets everything looks identical.

And I wouldn't change that for the world 💯 #justakidfrompaterson
Joey_ Breezy He built more than just a shop rite. When he came into office Newark was on the decline. The mayor and the administration before Corey Booker was corrupt. Newark is a major city so crime will always be a factor but it’s definitely improved. The residents of Newark need to be careful because they are slowly but surely trying to move the low income families out. Especially in the downtown performing arts district. In fact a white lady was just telling me that her family member (who is an executive for a IT firm) just moved to Newark in a newly built building with a Whole Foods in the lobby.
Girl, you need to get on that New Jersey Transit train and head out to Summit for a day, walk around, eat some food, get some air. Trust me, it is diverse out in the suburbs as well white, Chinese, Indian, Black we have some of everyone out here, it's peaceful and quiet, come check it out. Montclair, Westfield as well, you can take the train there too from Broad St or Penn. You can also take the train down the shore to Asbury Park, it is super diverse down there and fun, you would have a great time, no car needed!
Give Plainfield a try. Or try Piscataway - it's the next town to the West of Plainfield. Have you ever heard of New Brunswick? They have a lot of stuff because they have a campus of Rutgers University; If you take the train the Rutgers Bookstore is one Street over. I'm telling you, New Jersey has a lot to offer.

Florida is a cesspool
No history, just greed.
They still give out free samples it's just dope now..
Sir, that was well said I also used to live there
So what happened to the Paterson City DPW street cleaners that used to come around once a week when I was a kid???

Good for you, you are a classy person who was raised well. All the best. We are not where we are from, where are who we become...

Shame.

It seems that people here are too poor to buy some brooms.

I used to live in Paterson in like 2004-2008 and it was not trash everywhere at all. Idk how it just turned out like this
Dam bro u right by my mothers house she by down the hill on east main and Amity we live right by section 8 towers but hey Paterson ain’t that bad there’s opportunity to leave u just gotta apply ya self and tbh these hoods ain’t that bad once u live in them cuz u get used to them but I moved out tho recently I live in Cali now but God Bless to all who still wanna make it out the hood there’s a chance 🙏❤️✅💯

People have no pride, trash and garbage everywhere. The city should get tough on these neighborhoods.
We are not part of the city but we are working on this.
The city needs to go after the absentee landlords.

Crazy Boyfriends paterson is slowly gentrifying as we speak. It’s only 10 miles out from NYC. big changes will be happening in the next 5-10 years.

At one point he passed the public library a very dangerous place to be at night . I was born and raised in Paterson glad I got out
Less than 5 mins in was basically my exact route when I had a drug problem and would walk thru there to meet my dealer.

Corey Booker actually did a pretty good job with Newark.
Apricot Bamboo be built a shop rite
Joey_ Breezy He built more than just a shop rite. When he came into office Newark was on the decline. The mayor and the administration before Corey Booker was corrupt. Newark is a major city so crime will always be a factor but it’s definitely improved. The residents of Newark need to be careful because they are slowly but surely trying to move the low income families out. Especially in the downtown performing arts district. In fact a white lady was just telling me that her family member (who is an executive for a IT firm) just moved to Newark in a newly built building with a Whole Foods in the lobby.
