@@Keybored Yea definitely worth a little exploration especially if there are some boards that are heavily impacted. I highly doubt but I guess we dont know for certain
yes more science lessons with Scott! Your example with the tuning fork and block of steel really resonated with me (I’ll see myself out). Thanks for the video!!
I didn't expect it to be so different! Perhaps KBDfans uses a different process of coating VS others, but it was very interesting to see such a dramatic difference!
Scott! Glad to have you back! Thanks for the in depth info and science on the potential impact of color choices boards. Very good info! Glad the move went well and that you settled in and even happier to have your reviews and vids back! Space ain't the same without you!
Never doubt the power of green nano-coating. Hands down the best sound profile in MY history of green colorways! Definitely no bias from me and my inherent addiction to green colors!
So that everyone is aware. The force break mod kit that comes with the board (he mentions at 14:46) is actually more of pre-cut foam pads rather than tape. It works pretty well even though this board didn't really need it, its always a welcome addition.
My MKIII is en route to my house and should be here within hours. I just came across this video. Glad I ordered anodized case, polycarbonate top-mounted with Oil King switches. I'll post again if any surprises emerge once I receive the unit.
Fascinating! In retrospect, this makes sense, but I had no idea it would be pronounced enough to actually notice! Love these educational videos, btw. Appreciate the scientific approach to keyboards!
awesome science lesson! makes me all the happier i took the plunge. first day use of e-flash white, i looove it (gateron milky yellows, tape mod, 205g0 lube, stainless steel weight)
great video scott! I was wondering if long poles wouldve made the sound difference even more apparent, or to make it livelier, but I totally get what you mean too in this vid, much appreciated :)
As I progress into the hobby, I feel like my preference definitely moving away from a foamy thock to a creamy clack. I hope Scott gets a chance to look into the current trends in the Chinese community now that he's in East Asia... right now, PP plates and PET film for sound shaping are becoming more common. PET film is especially common now.
Thanks for the review!! and looking at your windowshades like "great scott!! he's in korea now I wish i'm in korea cuz I need that real pyeongyang naengmyun so bad..."
Scott, nice choice. I have the same color/weight combo and same plate and pcb in my cart before watching this video. (Silver ano+stainless weight+pc plate+andi hot swap pcb). Damn i think i watched too many of your video already😂 Great video and technical explanation is a plus as always! Edit: only way to make it sound move lively is the soldered pcb due to 1.6mm thickness....but why mess with that when you can have the ease and freedom of hotswap 😅
Oh something I know about! I play drums and when you have a drum head (or "skin") mounted on your shell, when it's under tension it makes a note and resonates with itself, and with the other opposing head and even the shell too. For majority of drum heads they come in two flavours: clear and coated, coated of which being a special application process that kind of works like a powder coat. Clear heads have more "attack" and are usually higher pitched, while coated heads have more "warmth" and are usually lower pitched. The nature of the anodized aluminum is to be a more clear, unrestricted vibration and tone, while the E-coating dampens and restricts it. SCINCE! Edit: drum shells, especially snare drums, can be made of different materials, including steel, brass and copper, and depending on the size and thickness create different tones and volumes paired with either clear or coated drum heads. Another thing that keyboards and drums share in common is how much my wallet cries whenever I buy something 😭
I assume it's not that big of an impact, but I know different color plastics weight differently. white gaming mice are always 1-2 grams heavier than black mice, because they use different chemicals(I don't think it's just adding dye).
Regarding the color sound difference, I am wondering if the electrophoresis coating is serving like an additional "layer" between the top and bottom case, essentially serving as sort of a "force breaK" compared to the full anodized aluminium case.
I would never consider colour to have a such big impact on the sound! That was really interesting and professional video. I wish keyboard community really go to this "actualy knowing stuff" direction than uuuu look at ThIs CrAzY kEyBoArd that I got for 50 euro. It thocc!
Thanks for this great vid.. One little favor to ask. your opinion on colors that limit you the least in keycap choice. i don't want E-coating so i'm left with Ano colors. What i really liked was the Mocha but i think that will limit my keycap options.. since i have A keychron in silver i thought Ano Gray is the best option.. Any thoughts are welcome... i watched Andy V Nguyen review where he showed his Gray version and it looked good. He also metioned this keycap limiting problem haha.. don't have room in my apartment for both boards...
I think the case has a bit to much case ping, so the the bottom foam, force break mod and maybe no mounting points under space bar seem like good options.
Hey Scott! From all the keeb vids on RUclips, I trust you the most.. so I have to ask you: if I want a nice creamy sound for my new think 6.5 v3 (pc plate), which switch would you choose? I thought about durock pom, epsilons, morandi, cream soda, … but I can’t decide. Could you give me an recommendation please? 😊
Both the MKIII and ODIN 75 have really odd features and the sound resonance no matter what you do isn't all that great. The MKIII .. the LED would have been much better used for a fingerprint reader as you pointed out, and that's what I originally thought it was. The ODIN 75 screen is essentially a vestigial organ and useless. KBDFans is showing their limits in a big way. They do not have electrical engineers working in-house or if they do, they're not competent enough to do the more advanced features.
That is actually crazy how the color tangibly affected an element of the board, and thank you for documenting this quirk you discovered Scott :)
I wonder if it's more wide spread or isolated to this board! Will have to investigate!

Hahaha I see what you did! :)
That knock test was so revealing!

Thank you so much for the support! Hope that I can continue to bring out content while out here! Hope I can cover some more Korean boards soon too!
Always making me more addicted to the hobby!!! Thanks
It is great to see you back to the keyboard reviews! I dont have any money but is great to see the new things that come to the hobby

awesome, missed the videos. other creators talking from experience is good and all, but i really like the scientific approach.
Man, I love the lesson. Feels like I just learned the hell out of keyboard materials. Thanks!!

The exterior is so neat and nice! Especially the space bar sound is the best💕
great video scott! I was wondering if long poles wouldve made the sound difference even more apparent, or to make it livelier, but I totally get what you mean too in this vid, much appreciated :)
Amazing video as always plus a great science lesson as well!
Nice video as always and glad to see the science again
Final sound test is really CLACC
Surface roughness can also affect the fit / seal between top and bottom half, similar how the force-break mod does.

Could you give me an example of the boards you're talking about? Something that I could search and hear what their boards sound like

Hey Scott, you should make a video explaining the science behind how different switch materials can cause different sounds and etc.
0:03 Imagine how cool it would've been if this worked. Could be the world first Custom fingerprint keyboard
Thank you for the science mr keybored man
Always intresting seeing little factors affect sound. One intresting one i saw is fixed layout vs variable layout plate.
Not sure if I missed anything. What was supposed to be the continuation to the pcb compatibility mentioned at 9:34

You have a pretty good point too! What's interesting is that thr components alone sound so different too!
These are the videos I love.

Nice vid mate
Super interesting video Scott! I wonder if the WKL tabs on the e-white case contributed to the sound difference too 🤔
It could have! But the bottom part of the case also yielded very different sound! Really interesting
Hi friend :) do you recommend this board or the Neo80?
crazy how much of a difference that is
To sum it all up: SquashyBoy was a pioneer with his spray paint mod.
Have you tried the box cj’s?
Do you think burger o-ring top mount would change the sound significantly?

Damn itttt now I want to lazer etch my brass board

Yeah I didn't use the mounting near the space bar either. Also made the space Sr sound bettef
Dude just made me touch the lightbar on my MKIII thinking it actually was a fingerprint reader

This is why my silver ano 2.0add sounded better than my coated 2.0add with the same build
Funny how my parents laptop from around 2008 had finger print unlock but keyboard in 2023 still doesn't
What keycap did the final build use?
DCX sleeper!
clean
Wooooohooo sience lessons are back 😍
Hope it's not too boring!
On the contrary, I missed these!
scott cooked in this one
I wouldn't say it's the color I'd say it's the e coating vs the annodization
"The densest of the three is copper..."
People who think top mounts are stiff are ridiculous. They arent any worse than the rubber dome keyboards you grew up with
I think most people are referring to alu top with 1.6mm pcb, which are pretty stiff
another goated intro!
Haha thanks!
Right?
there is a reason you don't put a paint/coating on a cymbal
As someone who's very sensitive to sound on keyboards, I didn't need to see this.
As if picking a color wasn't already hard enough 😭

yay!
First!
다양한 요소들 캬 ㅎ
The flex in this keyboard as demonstrated 12:15 onwards is really scary. I mean do you all really wanna be typing on trampolines?
First
Pretty close!
No RGB 😢
