MWF first thing I do is bench 225 for max reps. I just keep trying to beat my previous attempt. I don't get a PR every time, and sometimes I even go down a rep or two, but this took me from maybe 7 reps to 16 in a matter of 4-5 months.
Sixteen is good, but of course around that number is where people get stuck! I suspect the best way is to start from above and below. You try to get 275 ideally to 20 reps (over years, big bulking), and try to get 185 for as many possible. When you achieve the 20 reps of 275 slowly start decreasing the weight and start increasing the weight on the 185.
they don't have a set amount they HAVE to do, but it looks bad if you're weak.. there was a corner who played for the Redskins named fred smoot who could only do it once
