I was married to one of those Russian born Germans who ended up at the beginning of WWII being kicked out of Russia, put in a labor camp in Poland until he was put in the Hitler Youth Army. He was captured by Russians, heard they were going to kill him, escaped to an English encampment at the end of the war. They were kind enough to deliver him to his Uncle's farm
