I am trying to run a private game server for me and my family but I suck at networking and need ports opened or a way for everyone in my house to connect without opening ports via the router plz help !!

be aware of which type of network that the device is compatible with. Case in point I just installed MYQ devices in my garage to operate my 2 overhead doors and I had to reprogram my ADT alarm panel when I switched from DSL to Starlink. Neither Device is compatible with 5GHZ Only 2.4GHZ WIfI and the devices in the garage do not play nice with the range extender so I am hoping when my router arrives tomorrow that it throws out a good WIFI signal because the Starlink router is way too weak to reach the garage. I am not sure what I will do if that is not the case as mesh networks jus tend up extending the signal and extenders don't work with these devices.

Great stuff and thanks for sharing. However, you should point out that Wifi routers operator on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. So it's NOT really 5G but 5 GHz frequency band. While the data rates are higher on the 5 GHz compared to the 2.4 GHz band, it's not accurate to call it 5G. Love the videos and keep posting !!!!

Mr. Cristina: I could not find the posting (the video) where you were commenting on 'warm or hot' cables in/on the (SL) Starlink system. (When the heater was turned on.) In any case, perhaps you will be able to peruse this update. I have contacted Starling CS (Customer Service) and (in some detail) described my cables and the temperature of them. My cables are NOT hot (whatever hot indicates) but they are warm. I clearly elucidated this situation (to Starlink CS) and asked if there were going to remotely change users 'heating duty cycle,' or whether replacement cables would be issued. USUALLY, when I ask Starling CS a question, they promptly respond: so far it's been 2 weeks with no response. (SL has gone silent) I wonder what's going on. Oh yes, in my location, temperatures can fall to -40 f and we can get 24" of snow in a single snowfall - my point: my Starlink dish needs to be on and melting snow - this is not an option, as opposed to 'other' users who see 1" of snow and 32-degree temps. I NEED, or if you wish, Starlink users in some remote locations NEED the heater - we need it to work and be reliable. Ok, well just wondered if you had heard anything in terms of Starlink upgrading their cables to a heavier gauge and or if they were remotely changing the duty cycle of the heating process. (You must have a technical/engineering background, as changing the duty cycle is a definite easy fix to hot cables.) As always, great videos: are informative and valuable. Thank you.

I am connecting Starlink ethernet directly to TPLINK-SG108E then using cat5 ethernet to the multiple router networks. Previously I was getting around 80 MBPS and after upgrading to the new TPLINK-SG108E I am getting close 30MBPS. So, for some reason I am getting lower speed in all of the different routers. If it’s the router and not the modem in the dish you should be able to use a third party router in bridge mode and an access point. Best case. If it’s stuck due to the failure, then you will need to wait for the replacement. Sadly.

Do another a few seconds later and it pegs at 150 mbps . Jumps right up there and comes back to the 150 mbps. Still slows down during the evening, but still running a whole lot better than my last set up. ..Hopefully as they get more units up in space things will get even better.. Thanks, Randy

Only thing I wish you would have shown is the latency differences. It seems the starlink router has a large variation of latency going from 27 to 39 in your testing, while the tp link stays around the same 23 to 24. For people that are gaming the latency will matter much more than just raw speed. I also notice that starlink speeds vary a lot even within short time frames, potentially making the internet speed being slower on the tp link just unlucky timing. Great video and I hope to see more videos like this!

    Joseph,
I finely received my Starlink Version 2.0 after waiting 14 months and as soon as I arrived I installed it right then and there I was not going to wait another day to get it up and running after waiting 14 months. I had ordered the Ethernet adapter at the same time that I finalized my Starlink order and it was on back order. My old ISP was Frontier DSL and to say that it was slow would be a bit of an understatement, (Smoke Signals would have been faster). On a good day I might get 4Mbps down and 300Kpbs up it would literally take over an hour to upload a short video to RUclips.
I got the Starlink up and running in my work shop where I installed it due the workshop roof being the only location on our property that has a clear enough view of the sky. (The Starlink Visibility
Screen is showing zero obstructions 100 % BLUE SKY with 0% RED). I have a boat load of Linksys WRT54GL 54 Mbps Wireless-G WiFi Routers left over from the old days and had set up a CAT5e LAN from our house to my workshop and then on to our pole barn. The main WRT54GL was configured as a router and the remaining two were configured as access points. It worked well for years at the slow speed of the Frontier DSL. We live out in the sticks and our cell service is just about as bad as the Frontier DSL so we use WiFi calling, so when I setup the Linksys LAN I configured the main router and access points with deferent IP address but the same SSID's and the same Password's to make the transition for our cell phones when using WiFi calling from the router to access points and from access point to access point much smoother and it worked very well even with the slow Frontier DSL. As you can guess Linksys WRT54GL's were not going to cut it with the faster speeds that Starlink can deliver.
After I received the Ethernet adapter I had to move the Linksys WRT54GL Router that was in the house where the Frontier DSL Modem/Router was located out to the workshop and the access point that was in the workshop to the house, after I got everything reconnected and working I connected the Starlink router to the WAN port of the WRT54GL Router in the workshop and it worked but the best sped that I could get over the 2.4 GHz was about 16 Mbps down and less than 10 up. Even going Ethernet from the Router in the workshop to my computer delivered around 45-50 Mbps down and 15-25 up, and the same on the computer in the house, so at this point I knew that I had to bite the bullet and get faster Routers/Access points.
I looked at the newer line of Linksys Router and the reviews on the ones that were in our price range were not very good. My wife and I are retired and on a fixed income so price was a big factor in our buying new routers, everything that I was seeing was far out of our price range and that is when I found your video. "How To Setup Your Own SpaceX Starlink Link Router Alternative" and look at the TP-Link AC Router. At the time it was listed for $59.99 so we went to order 4 of them 3 to use and one as a backup I like to have a backup on hand, there was limit of only two per customer so I ordered two and MY wife order two. The very next day after we ordered them the price went from $59.99 to $54.99 and now it is $53.99, (Like I always say if you want a good deal on something just wait till after I buy it and it will go on sale.)
After receiving the TP-Link AC Routers, I spent the next few day getting familiar with them and learning how to configure them as Routers and as Access Points. I have a large roll around table that I built years ago. I set all 4 of them up on the table so I could configure them. The first one I configure as the router and the remaining 3 as Access Points. Again like the Linksys LAN
I configure them with deferent IP address but could not use the same SSID with all four sitting on the table as I would not be able to tell one from the other so I had to give each one its own unique SSID that reflected which unit it was and Wireless bands. I used HOUSE 1_2.4GHz on the Router, HOUSE 2_2.4GHz for access point #1, HOUSE 3_2.4GHz for access point #2, and HOUSE 4_2.4GHz for access point #3 as the temporary 2.4 GHz SSID's.
And for the 5 GHz I used HOUSE 1_5GHz on the Router, HOUSE 2_5GHz for access point #1, HOUSE 3_5GHz for access point #2, and HOUSE 4_5GHz for access point #3 as the temporary 5 GHz SSID's. Once I had all of the units in there finial locations all of the 2.4 GHz SSID's were changed to HOUSE_2.4GHz, and all of the 5GHz SSID's were changed to HOUSE_5GHz so it would still be possible to tell the 2.4 GHz from the 5GHz.
I sequentially replaced all of the Linksys Routers with the TP-Link AC Routers and everything worked, I have had the new TP-Link LAN up and running for just under a week and I am very happy with how it is working and I wanted to say Thank You for producing the video "How To Setup Your Own SpaceX Starlink Link Router Alternative" thank you it help a lot and it saved us a lot of money.

it seems like he doesn't understand what the speeds actually mean? No you won't get faster internet speeds with an AX router on wifi and you don't make this clear. You will only get faster speeds when accessing devices within your own network like transferring files from device to device for instance or streaming games through steam from device to device. Your internet speeds are not being capped by the speeds of your router so therefore will NOT be faster when using a router with faster transfer protocols. This is a pretty important point which you've glossed over entirely but needs to be stated clearly for this video to have any meaning at all.

Do not know what Starlink is doing with its premise routing device when it comes to the IP protocol stack. Cable internet service uses DOCSIS with DOCSIS-PIE RFC 8034 algorithm to reduce bufferbloat. Do not know if Starlink is doing anything link this with its equipment. Might account for the difference in the download speeds on your tests.
Do not know if anyone else has used a wireless router trying the cake over htb + fq_codel solution. Would like to know if that made any difference.
Do not know what the major backbone, and router companies did to solve the issue of ever rising packet loss that was up to around 9% world wide some decades ago. Thing is buffer bloat can contribute to packet loss. As such IP packets have to be re-transmitted which is very inefficient. The problem is too many companies use a proprietary solution that only works on their equipment, or that somebody has to license from them. Thing is will never have a solution unless it's baked in to the protocol snack that everyone has to use.

    • @jcristina

Great points. I hope someone knows here and adds a comment. Packet loss is a real issue and I’ve done some testing around 1.5 to 3.5% which is not great.

Thanks for this great video. I see that you have the ethernet adapter connected in the Wan port of the tp link router and then have the 8 ports control or manage switch. Then you say you have the mesh network installed from
The switch. I have a different setting and wondering if I could get better seed testS results sby setting if differently.
So I have the Starlink etherney adapter that goes from the Starlink router to the port 1 of the manage switch. I have my Linksys mesh Ac6600 parent node connected in port 3 of the control switch. Should I do it differently? Do I need to get a router like you show in your video before the mesh network?
Also I did activate the bypass mode when setting up my mesh networks but recently noticed that when I look at my settings, bypass mode is not blue anymore. Is that normal?

That is fine. Really depends what you’re trying to manage. Your placement is just fine.
