This video shows how I added a USB type C port to an iPod Nano 1st generation, which supports both charging and syncing.
Sorry for not showing any soldering in this video, it's hard to film (and I'm bad at it), but maybe I'll show it in my next video.

Hi David! Just want to let you know, you video has motivated me a lot! I was planning on buying an ipod nano for modding, and you video really helped me! (I haven’t started yet but I’m looking forwards to it). I plan on soldering more storage and also upgrading it to an usb c port.

Very good work! I recently broke one of the brass connector on the 30 pin connector when I was trying to get the ribbon cable for the Click Wheel to go in the tiny ribbon connector (I guess I must've accidentally touched it with my tweezer 🙄). I thinking of replacing it with another 30 pin connector (if I can find one) but after seeing this video. I might have to rethink about it....
this is amazing, subbed u up, i heard dank pods saying it's hard or impossible to mod nanos, so i would like to see more extreme nano mods, something like bigger battery or flash mods etc, myb on second gen since it's harder to open

How difficult was the soldering? I have done some soldering projects before, but never something super precise. Would an average hobbyist be able to do this?
Good question, I'd say that you need a reasonable amount of experience with small-scale surface mount soldering. If you're comfortable soldering 0402 resistors/caps, you can probably do this.
But as I demonstrated, you can take a pretty unskilled approach to removing the 30-pin connector!
Great project! I love these first generation nanos and have been wondering if a flashmod could be performed. I'd love to get one of these with 32 or 64gb in my pocket.
So far no chance, the iPods seem to be individually flashed to their intended capacity when produced. The current limitations seem to be software related, not hardware.
People have successfully swapped the NAND chips out, but no luck in them working
AMAZING, if you ever get a 1st gen ipod pls try and do the same.
also you should open a store for this. sell these kinds of cool things.
I have an old nano that suddenly won't connect to computers anymore regardless of what cable is used. So now that I've bought another one to replace it, I'm really tempted to try this. I've got USB c cables everywhere for my phone, so this would be incredibly handy. I have the second generation so I'm assuming I would have to do a little more research and digging into it to see if this would even be possible.

Did you ever end up doing anything with this? I've got a second gen where the connector is bad and replacing it is going to be pretty painful. So doing a standard USB seems like a nice option

Just curious, what's the deal with the stacked NAND flash on the board? Was it like that out of the factory or was that another mod you made?
factory! I like to think of it as a precursor to the modern "3D NAND"
I read somewhere that apple used two different memory chips from samsung and toshiba for this model. They all have the same capacity but different connection pins. Probably the blank space in the board is reserved for the toshiba chip?

How does it handle the right voltage and current stuff?
What type of wire are you using for the data connections? I'm using phone wiring, but that looks much more elegant and thin.
30AWG enameled wire. Kynar wire is also good for this sort of thing.
Nice work, do you think you can replace the flash storage with a micro SD module?
Yes! This is actually something I'm working on, but it'll be a lot of work and I'm not yet sure if its feasible.

There shouldn't be any difference.
Still same amount of data lines and no change in the controller as well. All he did was change the type of I/O port to match today's standard port.

You could use rockbox skins for the interface
Now it has usb c instead of the slow 30pin, is it faster at restoring? Or is it still using the 30pin protocol.
If you can remember when lightning was first released a lot of users reported that syncing, restoring and updating via iTunes was much faster on the IPhone 5 compared to the 30pin 4s.
given that the usb controller hasn't changed, it likely would not increase throughput
Would this work with other ipod models? I have a 4th gen classic and I would KILL for this. It would also be cool in a 3rd gen nano.
Very possible on a 4th gen, I've done it, although the 3rd gen nano would be a big challenge due to the limited space inside.
It could be really nice on a 6th gen too ! But maybe there's not enough space in it ?

It's so sad that you have to mod Apple products for a USB-C port. All the new iPad's come with USB-C, but meanwhile, we're stuck with a lightning port for these crazy expensive iPhones.

You won’t increase charge or transfer speed. Those are control by chipset and ic. And lost ability to use 30 pin dock..
So, you gained the ability to plug it to a USB-C plug, but you lost the ability to connect it to a bluetooth transmitter or a dock.
