Thx for the amazing tutorial! Just one doubt, i've successfully installed this mod with my 6th Gen iPod Classic with the iPhone 7 taptic engine, but i'm having really weird problem... The taptic engine is overheating, but i don't know why... Do you have some clue on what could It be?
The taptic engine get's around 45° C. And it heats even in idle, so using the scrollwheel or not, doesn't appear to make any difference... When starting the iPod up It slowsly starts to heat up.
First time soldering. I ripped the pad that the red wire goes to clean off… I don’t think my temp was hot enough. I used some tweezers and scratched the kapin tape (orange stuff) off the ribbon wire. Did a dot of flux and “tinned” my iron. Just melted a small bead to the iron. And was able to solder the red wire directly to the connection in the ribbon wire. I have parts coming to do a full rebuild and was messing around with this since I bought a broken iPhone 8 for $6 and am replacing the headphone line/battery etc so saw it as some practice. Honestly im blown away i got it to work after the devastation of ripping the pad off. Hopefully someone that has done the same reads this and can follow suit. Thanks for the video! Cheers

I don't have any apple products any more, I don't want any apple products. But seeing all these classic iPod mods installing Bluetooth, 200GB+ microsd storage, 3000mah batteries, wireless charging, and now taptic engines, along with the idea of the limited functionality, extra long battery life, and a bit of nostalgia makes me want to get a classic iPod and start doing these mods. It's extremely impractical unless I want to go somewhere with limited charging options and listen to music for a month, but it looks like so much fun and I'd imagine being very proud of owning and modifying one.
Do it! If you are a fan of the taptic engine you can now purchase pre soldered taptic engines ready to be installed inside an ipod from Etsy now. I built myself a white 5.5g 1 tb single sd card and 3800 mah ipod for myself since 5th gen is what I had as a teenager.
I first destroyed one taptic engine, then redid it with a new one and I am happy to say I got it working on a 5.5G iPod :) thanks a lot for your video!
Love it, great vid 👌 I was actually searching for taptic engine vids when I came across this. I want to replace the taptic engine in an iPhone 11/12 with a smaller one from an iPhone 13. Good to know those pads are there hiding.
Just completed this mod in a 5th gen, thin back with a quad and a big battery. It was very tight getting it closed, the battery JUST clears the taptic engine!
I did this mod with the iflash solo and a 3000mah battery. I had to get creative with where I put the taptic engine. I also installed a classic aluminum front this go around, feels premium with that and the motor!
I love this mod you made for the iPod especially that it matches the look of the unibody macbook because the white ones look like the white polycarbonate macbooks
Great video! For the third generation classic, can a larger battery be fitted when undertaking a flashmod, and can a taptic be added just like in fourth gen or is it more tricky with the third gen? Many thanks, and keep posting great content!
The internal layout of the 3rd gen is quite different to the 4th gen and so my method won't work directly. The reason is because the 3rd gen's battery slot is vertical and not horizontal, and the hard drive ribbon is too short to fold and allow a trimmed iFlash ATA to slot into the battery compartment in order to fit a larger battery. It may be possible to flashmod a 3rd gen and add a Taptic Engine, but keep the same original battery instead of adding a larger 3000mAh battery.
I did it! I used some of the ipod mini's battery cable as the conductor cable because I didn't find these small cables on sale in my town. Which one did you use btw? Second time soldering something and proving that it is doable even without experience. Great tutorial!
The cables I had are generic cheap 1mm diameter cables from a local electronics store, ideally I should be using thinner cables because they are more flexible.
What happens if you don't remove the speaker? Would that cause any issue? I think it would be kinda cool to have the speaker make the click voice and the vibration as well.
Messed this up on my first attempt. Ordering a new Taptic, but how do I know I didn’t mess up the pads where the clicker was? Should those 2 contacts have continuity?
I’m modding my 5.5 gen classic putting in classic connect for the usb c and Bluetooth I was wondering what Taptic Engine might be best for the build since there’s so many to choose from
@nekomichi thanks for the amazing tutorial video. I had a question… does the taptic mod only work if you solder on the first and last pads of the Taptic Engine? I’ve managed to pull one off being a bit overzealous with the soldering, so not sure if I need to scrap it and start with a new engine
Yes, it has to be the first and last pads. It might be possible to scrape off some of the insulation layer of the ribbon cable near the lost pad to expose the contact to solder to, but this can get messy.
you mention at 8:40 to have the taptic engine touching the edges before securing with epoxy, but the corner is rounded upwards on the inside. how did you secure your taptic engine to actually have it touching the edge without laying flat on the case?
I position it to align with the inside of the Hold Switch assembly, which is at a right-angle. The position is similar to how the battery was originally kept.
Hi, a while since you posted this, but was curious, why removing the speaker? Are you not removing a functionality form the ipod by doing so? And can’t you add the taptic on top of the speaker? Thank you ^^
I don't like the sound and also it makes it easier to access the soldering pads. This is optional and you can wire the Taptic Engine in parallel to the piezo clicker without removing it.
Wow thanks a lot for quick reply, much appreciated ^^. I am considering buying an ipod 7th for nostalgia and also removing a bit all AI suggestion from nowadays experience, so looking at all options ^^.
I wish you would've described a bit more how does the haptic engine feel, does it compare at all to how it feels on iphones? Are the clicks realistic like those of a real button click?
The feel is similar to the haptic click when setting an alarm on an iOS device. If you open up the clock app and try to set a new alarm, the haptic is like when you scroll up and down on the clock.
Is the iphone 7 plus taptic engine the only one with the diagnostic pads under the ink? I’d prefer to use a smaller taptic engine maybe from the iphone 12mini or something as then i still have space to mount my bluetooth module… do you know if that taptic engine also has those solder pads?
The iPhone X or iPhone 7 (non-plus) motor also has the pads and can be used (it's a little smaller). I'm not sure if the 12 Mini motor has the pads though.
Does the ipod classic thickness matter? Mine is an 80gb which I believe is considered slim. I'm putting a iflash solo and 2000mah battery (compatible with the solo). Will I need all thicker case components to have the taptic engine fit around everything? (it looked like yours was thicker than when you started)
In this video, I used a thin back however this was with an iFlash Quad. The iFlash Solo is thicker, so I think you'll need a thick back plate in this case.
I did this mod with the same iPhone 7 Plus Taptic Engine. Everything appeared to go smooth. But when I tested it, I don’t feel any vibrations. I do hear clicking sounds from the Taptic Engine. The engine had continuity. Before I wired it to the iPod. Any idea on what this could be? Did I get unlucky and get a busted engine? If I buy another Taptic Engine is there a way to test the vibration before I glue and solder it to the iPod? Thank you
It's the 6/7 gen more thick then a 5.5 thin? I don't think it's possible this setup on a 5.5 thing, i was hoping, i think even with a 2000mha and iflash solo, there isn't the space for the taptic, so the only way it's a thick back. I'm righ?
Would it be possible to instead of removing the speaker, wire the engine wires to the solder balls of the speaker? Then you could have the noise and feel of scrolling
I love the video but i noticed on the battery connector you didn't instruct to lift the black latch holding the ribbon. Instead just telling peeps to just pull it out.
The 6S Taptic Engine is very inconsistent, some work but most won't and will just make a weak noise even if you've installed everything correctly. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus Taptic Engines will work much more consistently.
Great video! Could you do the same thing on iphone se 1st gen. I think you will need an iphone 6s plus taptic engine due to the size of iphone se’s vibrator.
It almost looks like my 80gig iPod Video, except the touch control is white. I still actually use it because we bought a used 2010 Dodge minivan that has an iPod connector. The battery is pretty beat so sometimes there’s a communication error until it charges up a little after the vehicle starts, but other than that it’s pretty solid and holds a crapload of music.
Is there any way to use the Taptic Engine in something else? I was looking for a small dc to ac inverter but I couldn’t find anything small enough, let alone anything small that wasn’t dc to dc. Please help, thanks.
Not at all. The piezo clicker that we're replacing is specifically there for the cursor clicks only and doesn't output the music playback. That signal is separate and goes to the headphone jack instead, which we're not touching in this mod.
Can you make this a 1 TB or above? I noticed you had 3 other slots you left unpopulated. Great video by the way, well shot and edited, very entertaining and informative.
@@cyangreed that is, if you fill the full 2 tb, he will be able to recognize only 1.9? But the unrecognized data segment is fixed or does it not recognize each time randomly? and how much does such an increase in 2tb cost?
soooo if you have your headphones in , do you still hear the original 'clickly' sound along with the taptic engine ,even if you can't hear it when you take out the headphones ? seems like a weird question but I thought I'd ask
Yes, it still plays in the headphones. On the 4th gen, you can independently control the clicker and the headphone clicks but on the 5th gen and newer you can only turn both on or off at the same time.
I think the 7 Plus motor outputs slightly stronger haptics than the regular small 7. Another factor is the better fit, it has a much larger surface area of contact with the iPod's back casing so it's better at transferring the kinetic energy across.
Because most common phone vibration motors are a completely different type of motor called an ERM (eccentric rotating mass). An ERM is not compatible with the type of signal output by the piezo clicker whereas the Taptic Engine is, since it's a linear actuator.
you can't imagine how much I liked this video many congratulations, I would love to ask you if you could make one I would pay for everything for myself, the worst moments of my life I always had my iphod now I don't have it anymore
the sound of the taptic engine in operation almost similar to that of the clicker. I don't see a need to have them together. Also, as Neko says, if you put them in series the output of both will be reduced. If you put them in parallel you can generate too much consumption and damage something on the board. Better to remove one and put another.
Hey, did you use a thick or thin back case for this iPod classic? And do you know about these taptic engine from aliexpress are similar to the original iphone 7? Thanks!
Regarding sizing, can you merge that Taptik Mod with at least 256GB of storage, the Audiojack + BT ? Currently looking around and would be keen getting the 5.5 gen Wilson Dad version all packed into a 7th Gen Case/Look.
Has anyone tried installing a taptic module in a standard version of an ipod with an HDD? Is there enough space to put the taptic under the battery and close the case?
The original clicker is a little redundant because I'm using headphones with the iPod so I can't hear the sounds but people nearby might be distracted by it. That's why I replaced it with a Taptic Engine so it gives an additional form of feedback (haptics) instead of simply repeating the same sound that's also being played through my headphones.
do you know if there is a board out there that allows to attach a bigger screen to the ipod classic. im trying to increase the screen size with new housing.
there's got to be a way to install without removing the click speaker, right? if you could find the space, you could just solder to the pins, couldn't you? crazy that you did a full refurb, but you kept it looking stock. if you're going to replace with inferior parts, you might as well make it look unique.
But how does it work when the software it is not intended to be used with an taptic engine....like...you wire it up with a headphone conector inside but wouldn't it make the engine to vibrate un intently when you play music...plss someone explain 🤔
The Taptic Engine isn't replacing the headphone jack, it's replacing the piezo clicker. The piezo clicker is designed to output the cursor clicking only and not the music playback. The wave signal for the cursor click just happens to fall within the same resonant frequency range for the Taptic Engine, which is why it works.

Can you make this a 1 TB or above? I noticed you had 3 other slots you left unpopulated. Great video by the way, well shot and edited, very entertaining and informative.
You can, the iPod can read up to 2TB although it starts getting unstable at 1TB.
@@NekoMichi What is unstable work?
@@user-rt4ul3st3q DankPods tried to upgrade storage to 4tb, but not every tf-card work with the new adapter, and when you put 2tb its only read 1.9tb
@@cyangreed that is, if you fill the full 2 tb, he will be able to recognize only 1.9? But the unrecognized data segment is fixed or does it not recognize each time randomly? and how much does such an increase in 2tb cost?
Sometimes it won't boot, sometimes it randomly corrupts data and you lose all of your music.
Did I just find another DankPods😮

could i use an iflash solo and trim it to make room for the taptic engine as i accidentally broke my clicker and i want flash. its in a thin version.
iFlash Solo is too thick, only the iFlash Quad or a dedicated flash SSD will fit.
@@NekoMichi can i trim it atleast?
I've only tried trimming an iFlash ATA1, haven't tried with an iFlash Solo. Might work, but no guarantees.
@@NekoMichi Well, anyways thanks for your advice. I hope you keep finding mods for ipods!
soooo if you have your headphones in , do you still hear the original 'clickly' sound along with the taptic engine ,even if you can't hear it when you take out the headphones ? seems like a weird question but I thought I'd ask
Yes, it still plays in the headphones. On the 4th gen, you can independently control the clicker and the headphone clicks but on the 5th gen and newer you can only turn both on or off at the same time.
Scarlet Fire
Power on.
Bluetooth mode.
Auxiliary mode.
Do you think the plus provides better haptic response compared to the regular 7 Taptic Engine? And do you think its worth the size difference?
I think the 7 Plus motor outputs slightly stronger haptics than the regular small 7. Another factor is the better fit, it has a much larger surface area of contact with the iPod's back casing so it's better at transferring the kinetic energy across.
Hey what going on Bro, Great video. is your backplate the thick or the thin version? trying to make sure i grab all the right parts
It's the thin version.
why not use a vibration motor from a samsung or other device?they are relatively small, u can save space for something else or u can put 2 of them.
Because most common phone vibration motors are a completely different type of motor called an ERM (eccentric rotating mass). An ERM is not compatible with the type of signal output by the piezo clicker whereas the Taptic Engine is, since it's a linear actuator.
Would this still work in a 5th gen 30gb using an iFlash solo+regular battery replacement?
yo! Scarlet Fire !
Dankpods enjoyer
you can't imagine how much I liked this video many congratulations, I would love to ask you if you could make one I would pay for everything for myself, the worst moments of my life I always had my iphod now I don't have it anymore
hello I'm wondering if the 12 mini taptic engine is eligible for this?
The iPhone 12 Mini Taptic Engine might not have the hidden pads on the side that we need to solder to.
@@NekoMichi right, then I'll buy it and try. thankfully they are not expensive. will update in a few weeks
ahhhh oddly satisfying
Would it be possible to use both the speaker and a Taptic Engine, or would that draw too much power?
It's possible to wire up the Taptic Engine to the clicker together so they both work, but that causes both of their outputs to be reduced.
@@NekoMichi makes sense, thanks for the reply!
the sound of the taptic engine in operation almost similar to that of the clicker.
Thanks!
I used a thin case. I haven't used Taptic Engines from AliExpress and don't know what their quality is like.
Get Taptic Engines on eBay
Regarding sizing, can you merge that Taptik Mod with at least 256GB of storage, the Audiojack + BT ? Currently looking around and would be keen getting the 5.5 gen Wilson Dad version all packed into a 7th Gen Case/Look.
It might be possible if you use a thin battery, iFlash Quad, and a thick back casing.
omg i like that. do more mods to things
Has anyone tried installing a taptic module in a standard version of an ipod with an HDD? Is there enough space to put the taptic under the battery and close the case?
There wouldn't be enough space to fit everything together
@@NekoMichi It's a shame, I really want to install this mod, but leave the hdd😭😭😭
cool ,i love iPod again
Question… why need a Taptic Engine?
The original clicker is a little redundant because I'm using headphones with the iPod so I can't hear the sounds but people nearby might be distracted by it. That's why I replaced it with a Taptic Engine so it gives an additional form of feedback (haptics) instead of simply repeating the same sound that's also being played through my headphones.
OOOOOOOOOOHHH I see that click is a little redundant lol
do you know if there is a board out there that allows to attach a bigger screen to the ipod classic. im trying to increase the screen size with new housing.
Not that I know of. That sounds epic though.
there's got to be a way to install without removing the click speaker, right? if you could find the space, you could just solder to the pins, couldn't you? crazy that you did a full refurb, but you kept it looking stock. if you're going to replace with inferior parts, you might as well make it look unique.
Theoretically you can just wire the Taptic Engine in parallel with the clicker and both will work.
Can it done to the thin ones?
“Someone’s been in here”
100% Brilliant video.
Can I ask, what's the full name for that type of battery you used?
The battery was just called "3000mAh battery for iPod classic thin", but the markings on it reads "385879 3000mAh 3.8V".
@@NekoMichi thanks buddy. I hope to have an ipod video 7th gen with this battery in the not distant future.
Also hope to replace the battery in my nano 3rd generation. Love that little ipod. Its like a credit card.
Keep making these types of video bruh they're really great.
That's awesome work, thanks so much for putting this together!
Have you got links you can share for the battery and back housings?
I bought them from a UK eBay seller called "approvedgadgets"
@@NekoMichi thanks for the Info! I'm UK based too and trying to avoid importing from EOE in the USA if I can avoid it. It looks approved gadgets have housings but no batteries listed. Perhaps you bought the last ones? ☹️
Ah my bad, the battery was from "pcnetworking". I think they have 2 left in stock. The housing was from approvedgadgets and they have back casings for other capacities too.
@@NekoMichi
Hello, are you based in the UK?
I am hoping to get one of my iPod Classic 7th Generation modded like this. I have successfully put a 1TB on it, but this TACTIC will be a problem, I don't have the knowledge of doing something so intensive like this and the TOOLS, apart from that, got this shaking hands due to age related problems. I joined your discord but could not send this message on the discord platform.
I don't mind how much it will cost. I am highly interested.
Thanks.
Unfortunately, I don't offer modding services (too many risks and my standards aren't exactly great).
