Hope Tim DeRuyter finds successes at another school but on the other side this was a much needed move to be made if we want to have any chance at the big 12 let alone a cfp spot in the future
Joey McGuires comments on firing Tim DeRuyter and Marcel Yates "I appreciate the work coach DeRuyter and coach Yates have provided our program the past three seasons," McGuire said. "This was a difficult but necessary decision as we continue to elevate this program to competing annually at the highest levels of college football."
You're not a top 25 team. Hello....just because you have a new athletic expansion, doesn't make you in any way competitive. You just WASTED MONEY on unnecessary projects. You're not going anywhere.....
I appreciate you honest look at D, we have a lot of problems on D. We gave up 14 points on 4 plays late in the 4th against TCU, including an 86 yard pitch and catch where the WR was untouched.
That's what lost Tech the game. People will only remember the Hammond fumble and I get it to some degree, but the defense was awful in the 4th in that game
Texas Tech ranked 123rd nationally in total defense, allowing 451.9 yards per game, and 132nd--second worst in the country--in pass defense with 305.3 yards a game.
Great comments. It's tough to talk tough about a school we all love, but it must be said because we ALL want the Red Raiders to succeed at a Nationally HIGH LEVEL! Tech's offense did enough to be playing in Arlington, but the defense could not. There was enough talent on the defensive side of the ball, and they played their tails off from a heart perspective. Where they fell short was coaching and scheme. Guns Up and Wreck 'Em!
@ can’t disagree. They had too many players that couldn’t figure it out. If you can’t get to the passer the secondary gets torched. I saw it with miss st. anytime they were up against superior talent. They had no chance. If you can get to the passer it negates some of the talent deficit. But I guess you could say that with any defense. Too many times tho in the 3-3-5 just can’t get to the passer no matter how many blitz.
@ I played in college with Joe Lee Dunn as our DC, the father of the 3-3-5 and our D blitzed like 95% of the time. But we had DB’s that could play bump and run and delay the wr just long enough for the pressure to get there. Where the team struggled was against the run. I just don’t think any 3 man front does well against the run minus early saban era Alabama.
About time, one of your fellow Texas tech insider will probably get rid of Zack too, because from what he was saying that he's in the last year of his contract and he might be in the running for a college head coach opening. So it's not just the fans but that's the feeling he's hearing
@ I guess we will just have to disagree. We watch the same games and see it differently. No problem. How many meaningless sideline screens were successful? Throwing 3 yd passes when needing 10. Terrified to throw it over the middle. Criminally underutilizing the TE’s. To be a top team u cannot waste plays. Blowing 10 -17 point leads is what u get by wasting opportunities.
All season long Coach McGuire kept saying the issues with the Defense were injuries. Injuries in the defense line, and injuries for the safeties and cornerbacks. I guess firing these coaches means the issues are deeper than just injuries. So who coaches the bowl game. The secondary should have had at least juniors in the secondary. McGuire has been here 3 years. So we should have some well developed safeties and corners.
@ we need better players. We are undersized at defensive line. Other than j rod. Line backers are to slow. Secondary players well That just speaks for them selves. I thought he did good with what he has!
I'm not going so far as to admit that I am wrong about Kittley, but he is starting to sway me the other way. If anyone should have been fired, it was Deruyter, not Kittley of course.
Sad to see DeRuyter go. We mortgaged the present for the future with so many young 2023 and 2024 HS recruits getting PT, I don’t think it’s really TD’s fault. His body of work is solid.
@@davidvinson4613 I think it all depends on how good your front 6 are. If they can win the LoS with 3 down and 3 gap fillers, you are in great shape. But you would already be in great shape no matter what scheme you ran. I want whatever scheme ensure dependable containment and gap coverage. You do need the extra DB against spread based offenses. But if you can’t contain or fill your gaps it doesn’t really matter.
Accountability. When you are responsible for securing players, developing them, and executing a competitive defense and your unit averages over 35 points against and ranked 100+ out of 133 teams, someone is always going to be accountable.
The head coach is supposed to get terminated. Wait a minute, tech fired Mike Leach, and slandered his name, and you still owe the Leach family MILLIONS. tech, you're a bunch of bigots.
They had to fire brown , otherwise Wv would have no fans show up on game days. Same thing will happen with Brennan at Arizona. That might be one the worst hires ever.
So you may want to check with your fellow insider and ask him to expand on where he is getting his information from, because from he said about 2 weeks ago he had be hearing that both Zack and Tim maybe no longer on Joey's staff
I wouldn't qualify myself as an insider. I am someone that knows quite a bit of people that know information though. Hard for me to "check someone" when I have no idea who they are or what is said. Let alone the context
@@stary1371 Unfortunately, Tech is not yet one of the destination schools. Access to resources will help but Tech needs to win consistently and put players into the NFL. When your success is expected by fans and opponents alike you will have arrived whether you are in the Big 2 or not. The resource gap just makes the fight harder. Just remember Tech owns the state of Mississippi.
Having a good offense in College Football is harder than its ever been and Kittley produced a Top 10 scoring offense. Was he perfect? No, but he did a much better job than a lot of people are giving him create for
He should have been fired after giving up 51 points to ABELIENE CHRISTIAN. If Texas Tech even had a slightly competitive defense, we would be in the Big 12 championship and maybe even the playoffs.
D was not good and needed to make a change. But I still don't let Kittley off the hook either. We'd be playing for a Big 12 championship if not for the offensive struggles in most games. I really don't care what "stats" say, as they don't tell the whole story. What could have been. But whatever, he's going to be in real trouble next season without Brooks.
Stats don't tell the whole story for sure, but it's not like Kittley was dealing with everything perfect. The Tech OL was still bad, multiple drops in key situations, etc... I'm not even a Kittley guy, but the bashing of him has gone too far. He held up is end of the bargain, but there's no doubt room to improve
Kittley is no doubt a good offensive mind but once the scripted plays were over there were critical stalls throughout the game. The stats were good, it was more about game flow decisions.
Squandered his eligibility I don’t blame him as talented as that young man is why stay here if your coach doesn’t utilize your talents nothing more to say unbelievable!

One word to describe Texas Tech firing DC Tim DeRuyter?
Inconsistent right move defense ranked 122 to 125 nationally that's bad
Necessary
Needed
Inevitable
Fundamental
CORRECTION: When I said "Texas Tech was 2nd in scoring defense", I meant 2nd WORST in the Big 12 only ahead of Oklahoma State
Hope Tim DeRuyter finds successes at another school but on the other side this was a much needed move to be made if we want to have any chance at the big 12 let alone a cfp spot in the future
100% agree, no ill-will at all towards TD. Sometimes and this case right now, change is needed

Not one word, but I am not surprised.. There have been hints for a while. At least our defense went out on a high note. I wish them well.

Hey RC, really enjoy both your podcast and Locked on Texas Tech. Thx
Appreciate the kind words. There are a ton of great podcast in the Tech space. Makes it a lot of fun to be a part of

I think the 3-3-5 takes really good and smart players. The defense appeared too hard for them to learn.
It concerns me that he will hire someone who runs the same scheme. If our players couldn’t handle it under TD, will it change with different coaches?
@ agree 100%.
3-3-5 needs to be blitzing, lots of games they only dropped 8. They also just don’t have the d line to play it

If Kittley leaves Texas Tech it won't be because he was fired, it will be because he got a G5 HC job
When has Texas Tech ever had a decent defense? It'll be interesting to see who they can convince to take the DC job.
When I was a student, all Tech had was a defense. That was the case through the Dykes era.
Plus I think the offense made it hard on the defense.
How so? The offense far more often put the defense in a position to succeed by scoring points

What pisses me off this year.....is that with a mediocre defense....we at least get to the Big 12 championship game.
Yep, if this defense was just Top 75 or shoot Top 100, they’d have won one or maybe even two more games
Shocked

I think this was in the works after the TCU meltdown, that cost us the Big 12 title game.

Nationally a top 5 running back a top 10 quarterback and a top 20 receiver you gotta lay off Kettley
How about an nfl up and coming coach? We need someone that really understands scheme and how to coach
No more “on the job learning” coaches

Why would they fire him?
The offense was decent but Kittley seems very limited. He calls some good plays but wastes to many plays.

Leach’s former DC at Mississippi St is available…Zach Arnett
Idk if they go the Leach route
Kittley and FIU. Seems too obvious, right?
That is what weong with texas tech always changing assistant coaches if they dont win every season.
Tech defense could not get teams off the field- few plays behind line of scrimmage and too much cushion by DB’s.
