    J, I think you may have gotten a few things wrong with your review. The shell cordovan wallet is hand cut, hand skived and hand stitched. That requires much more labor than cutting out your wallet with a clicker press (using what can only be described as cookie cutter dies) and machine stitching it afterwards... the shell cordovan wallet not only uses an incredibly expensive material but an incredibly time consuming construction process that requires a great deal of knowledge, experience and skill. The functionality may not be up to par with the design of the chromexcel wallet you are comparing it to but the construction is vastly superior in its traditional methods and will absolutely outlast anything machine stitched.

      Actually you're wrong, places that do hand made and handstitched still use clicker presses for the most part. They can make/have made their own shapes and cut outs pretty easily; it's not like they're made in China by the same company or some cheap BS.
      They also refine the edges afterwards, cutting them further by hand/with shaping tools, sanding them, then staining and burnishing the edges.
      Also worth mentioning, most brands and crafters will shave the leather down for the inside pockets, or so they can fold it over to make it look better, but those wallets don't last as long because the leather loses it's strength and rips a lot easier.

    The Shell Cordovan on the inside rubs together causing micro-abrasions which can look a little off-putting but not to me. My Whiskey ‘Fat Herbie’ has those same micro-abrasions and it’s not an issue. That’s why Ashland Leather and loads of other makers now use a lot more reverse Shell for the inside pockets to stop that from occurring, yet you then gain incredible die staining from the reverse side of the Shell’s that also looks incredible. You have a nice wallet and design that I quite like. I know Shell is expensive, however, I still feel even with how much Shell you have, their price is excessive. It is a worthy investment though. I keep making more, LOL. Thx for the update J Ko 😀👍🏻

      It's indeed expensive. The reason I chose the most expensive.
      Shell (from Italy) is because I have seen many Japan Shell as it ages, but I never seen one with Italian Shell. It's more for my personal interest and wanted to find out how it will age over time. Haha. I know it's silly. :)

      J Ko, it’s not silly. I’m never going to say that 🙂 I enjoy and own a few Shell Cordovan wallets. I prefer the Horween tannery, however I have Italian Shell too and it’s a really nice leather. Not silly as it’s what you enjoy! 😀👍🏻

    I've been designing and crafting my own versions in Shell Cordovan for a while. You're impressions are much like my own when I first came into contact with wallet companies who over-rely on leather branding to sell their products. The material is only half the battle. Since then I have never produced a wallet without a liner or proper edge finishing. It's shocking how many companies produce leather goods without enough pride to finish items properly. They go through all the trouble of importing Italian or Horween Cordovan just to leave the job half finished. It's rather depressing.

      Hi Hastur, I've just received 1 shell from Shellcordovan.co and 1 from Horween. I haven't used Shell before and would appreciate your thoughts on maybe what you feel is proper edge finishing or what to line a wallet with made from Shell? Do you have a link to your products? Cheers!

    • @joekkl
      @joekkl  4 года назад +1

      Hastur, you nailed it. It's crucial to have high quality full grain leather. However, it's equally important to have high quality craftsmanship. Amazing liner, edge finishing, ergonomic. Never sacrifice functionality over aesthetics. Both are required. If you have some product you want to share and don't mind an honest opinion, let me know. Thanks.

    I know this might sound creepy but which one feels smoother or more like skin? I like premium leather that doesn't feel dry and feels good against the skin.

    • @joekkl
      @joekkl  5 лет назад +1

      Definitely Shell Cordovan. It doesn't feel dry, feels smooth and shiny all the time. Age nicely and patina very well over time. Expensive though. That's my opinion.

  • @Camrographer
    @Camrographer 2 года назад +1

    I think the problems come down to the expense of the material. Shell is so expensive that it has to be used sparingly Thereby forgoing elements which give structure to the body. I'm not expert but it seems that way given the minimalist elements present. If shell is intended as a "one time" investment then it should be constructed in such a way as to address these shortcomings. Essentially one should expect design perfection at these price-points not showing off the material origins on the inside of the body.

    This is kind of an odd comparison. If you’re going to compare Italian Shell Cordovan to something from Horween, it should have been their Shell Cordovan since that’s what they’re known for. They’re also arguably the best at it from my experience with both.

    IDK man that wallet looks really cheap. Theres no slot in it separating the money so it just sits loose, which is not normal for a shell wallet that expensive.
    Not sure what currency you are talking about because you forgot to mention but that things worth maybe 200$ US, and for 490$ CAD someone could get the johnny the fox I just bought, which is a full sized bifold wallet, with all black shell cordovan and there are even other full sized bifold wallets on Etsy that are all shell cordovan for the same price, if not cheaper.
    And I'm not like a super expert and I'm looking at it through a screen, but that leather looked really dry which is my guess to why there was no follow up vid like you were kinda saying there would be to at the end of this one....

    • @joekkl
      @joekkl  2 года назад

      The wallet is not dry at all. It loses it's shine after a few years but it holds it's shape really well. When time allows, I will post a video to update how it ages. 😃

    • @leaferyvine8986
      @leaferyvine8986 2 года назад

      @@joekkl That would be cool. Aside from the price, I would like to see how that italian shell ages, cus like I say it has a cheaper look than the horween shells but honestly I think it really depends on what ur using it for.
      Like fot a big hand bag or shoes that color would look good, its just on something that small that is used all the time and isn't necessarily polished as often, I have to wonder how well it ages...

    It might be nice leather but the build and functionality dont justify a 400+ price tag. It looks like a 20 dollar wallet specially when closed and looking at the top. Very cheap looking to me.

    • @joekkl
      @joekkl  4 года назад +1

      $400+ is definitely expensive. In my opinion, no wallet should worth that much. My intention is to use it daily so I can see Shell Cordovan leather ages. I will probably give a 2 years review next year.
