Solar panels have at best 20% efficiency. However, when combining efficiencies for the battery chargers, batteries, and inverter the overall system efficiency is 15% at best. System efficiency drops about 1/2% to 1% per year, meaning that the overall maximum system efficiency is 10% or less after 10 years. That is horrible return on investment. After 20 years, the efficiency decreases to a few %.

Why does he keep dancing around the solution, the one he's developing in China. The same one dozens of other companies are developing all over the world. Nuclear, it's the only possible energy source that meets the requirements he set at the beginning of the interview.

Nuclear would work, if not for the cost, and the danger. A computer glitch is a nuisance. In a self driving car, it kills people. a computer glitch in a nuclear facility annihilates entire populations. Nuclear, like air travel, is generally safe, but if something goes wrong, it's an absolute disaster. Electricity is vital, but not worth betting that many lives on. I'm more comfortable with an occasional nacelle fire, or ice throw. The real solution is cost effective, efficient electrical energy storage. If someone actually perfects nuclear fusion, that would be the ultimate solution. That would render just about every other renewable source obsolete. I think nuclear fusion is far enough away, that there is a nearly certain future in wind and solar, if we could find a way to store energy at grid scale.

@@vincentrobinette1507 Nuclear plants have several redundancies to prevent accidents. Especially in newer gen3 designs compared to the older gen2s which are now being phased out.
Plus the death tolls from the few accidents we have had, have been considerably lower than the amount killed from air pollution from coal energy.
In fact if you look at the mortality rates vs energy produced. Nuclear comes out on top as the safest form of energy we have.
Only accident that has had any significant death toll was Chernobyl. And most of those deaths where because of Soviet incompetence.
Second one Fukushima had zero deaths from direct radiation exposure. Most of the deaths where because of the evacuation. Mostly stress related deaths. Like old people having heart attacks and such. And there where no significant increase of cancer cases in the years after the accidents. And the best estimate they can give is as little as zero to as many as 400 could maybe have died from cancer related deaths. In comparison the earthquake that caused the accident killed far far more people (18.000).
And the only accidents so far has been with older Gen 2 reactors which where built in the 60s.
Gen 3 reactors as i mentioned have far more saftey measures. Many of which are passive compared to active ones with gen2s.

@@ParasiteXX The only problem with nuclear is not so much safety, as up front capitol cost. Right now, nuclear is so expensive, that it takes ~5 decades, to generate enough electricity to pay for itself, at any reasonable electrical rate. Many who would invest in nuclear power simply won't live long enough, to get the return on investment. Wind turbines, if located in an area, where they can produce an average of 30% or more of their rated power, can pay for themselves in as little as 3 years. Thus, much more attractive to the typical investor. Don't get me wrong: Nuclear power will pay for itself, but, at age 57, it might not happen in my lifetime.
Solar, particularly photovoltaic, is less than 1/10 the cost that they were even a decade ago. With wind and solar becoming so inexpensive, its less expensive to develop them, than even coal or natural gas, let alone nuclear. The only things more expensive than nuclear, is electrical energy storage,(a necessity with intermittent renewable sources) and off shore wind. On shore photovoltaic is cheapest, followed by natural gas, then on shore wind, then coal, then nuclear, with off shore wind, being the most expensive. I don't include electrical energy storage, because that's quite expensive right now, and also adds to the cost of the wind and solar. Electrical energy storage is more of a "bank" than a source.

@@vincentrobinette1507 Problem with solar and wind is the massive land footprint required to even remotely match the same output from nuclear energy.
      ref: ruclips.net/video/zc7rRPrA7rg/видео.html
There is a huge environmental impact on wildlife as land has to be cleared to make room for the solar panels. And not to mention the effect wind power has on bird life.
If the point of renewable energy is to save the environment, then it's doing a piss poor job at that.
      ref: ruclips.net/video/N-yALPEpV4w/видео.html
And regarding nuclear costs. It depends a lot on type of reactor, how standardized and modular the design is, etc.. on how long before it becomes profitable.
It can be as little as 2 decades, or maybe even 5 decades as you say if it's a newly developed reactor design. Like EPR for instance which has hit a few early construction snags which caused delays and costs to ramp up. But as it gets mroe developed, it also gets cheaper and easier to build over time.

When we inevitably go fully sustainable and use geothermal, biomass, wave energy, tidal energy, solar and wind, cheap stable power will be the norm by ...
1: Using many renewable sources as listed above as even on a windless night the others are unaffected.
2: Using suitable energy storage like pumped water, liquid air, batteries and biomass etc.
3: Trading energy over large distances, across continents then eventually the globe. This would even out supply and demand. This is one application that capitalistic free market economics would be most helpful by quickly managing demand and supply.

It's just finding the right blend of environmental impact, cost, and efficiency. It's difficult to find a solution that meets all that criteria. Batteries, small foot print, efficient, but expensive. Pumped hydro involves a lot a land development and excavation, but is cost effective, and not quite as efficient. We need to find a solution, with a levelized cost of ~$.02 US per kWh, that is reasonably efficient. If a less efficient solution is used, there needs to be more generating capacity.(more, larger turbines, more solar)

Nothing going to totally replace fossil fuels. Some can only reduce the dependence on fossil. Sustainable energy is hard to achieve. Because our economy is so complex that we need instant and reliable energy. Meanwhile today renewables contribute about only 4 % of world's primary energy consumption. Reduce your material and energy consumption that's the only way forward.

  • @vincentrobinette1507

It's 2019 now. The biggest delay to transition is the attrition of existing generation assets. It's most economical, to allow the existing sources finish their cycle life, then, replace them with the sustainable sources. Many of the newer power plants have decades of useful life left in them, at least 3 decades or more. There is a lot of money invested in what we're using now. We need to get the return on those investments, and make enough profit to invest in sustainable sources. It will take at least until 2045 or beyond, to phase out the old, and commission the new.

They were a good solution, but photovoltaic panels are so inexpensive now, that it's more cost effective to pair a photovoltaic array with a battery. Photovoltaic panels work on cloudy days, where as heliostatic mirrors need the sky to be clear enough, to cast a clear shadow, or the light is just too defuse, to focus on the collector. With panels working on cloudy days, you can actually get more solar electricity per acre, than with concentrated thermal solar. Right now, photovoltaic arrays are less expensive per installed megawatt, than heliostatic thermal solar. 2 decades ago, concentrated solar was the clear winner. Now, not so much.

Edison generator and dynamos easily replace fossil fuels and nuclear power. A dynamo uses the outlet or generator to produce more current than is used. The current is not consumed by the Dynamo but the dynamo can produce ten times more current using the atom's of iron and the over 200 electrons to create more magnetic field that coils of copper wire can pickup. The brushless motor as a generator is as efficient as the permanent magnet motor as a generator. They need an inverter and transformers like windmills or solar panels but the power is continuous peak power like fossil fuels or nuclear
But zero fuel and zero pollution power plants. Publishing to build is wall that has not been scaled.

I believe that automobiles can make their own energy while driving down the road. Beneath the automobile are four tires. Why cant these tires be turned into turbines? A turbine is a device that harnesses the kinetic energy of some fluid such as water, steam, air or combustion gases and turns this into the rotational motion of the device itself. These devices are generally used in electrical generation, engines, and propulsion systems and are classified as a type of engine. Below the automobile is four wheels that are spinning a lot of the time getting the driver from point a to point b. While the tires are spinning down the road---why can't they be producing electricity and sending that electricity back into the battery that is powering the automobile in the first place. Before there were battery powered automobiles---this would not be feasible. Where would this generated electricity go? It is not like there is a place to store this much electricity in an automobile powered by gasoline. However, now that automobiles are powered by large batteries, there is a place to store this electricity to be used for more trips in the future. Just inside the tire there can be built into the tire a large copper rim that would be used instead of a steel or aluminum. In the center of the tire where the axil is is a very powerful electro magnet. This powerful electro magnet should not spin with the tire but should be stationery. Either ball bearings or some other mechanism should be used to make the electro magnet in the center of the tire not move with the tire but be stationery. So, the copper band which makes up the rim of the tire spins around the electro magnet where the axil is--producing electricity and this electricity is fed into the battery of the car by electric wires. The battery stores this electricity for future road trips. If the battery is efficient enough and the copper band and electro magnets in each four tires are powerful enough----a surplus of electricity/energy my be produced. This means that more electricity is produced than is needed to run the automobile. This surplus of energy is called the efficiency threshold. This is not a perpetual motion machine---just a surplus of energy through mechanical means. This surplus of energy could be fed back into the home/ and or electric grid when the automobile is parked. In fact, why not have a home generator based on this principle. If the automobile is suspended off the ground---and the tires rotate but don't go anywhere, but just produce electricity in surplus for the home---then the home could have almost perpetual electrical energy generated this way. This would be a basic model but soon it would be streamlined for home or business use. No more need for coal, gas, oil, or nuclear power plants to power anything. Purely clean electricity--no need for the sun or wind power. It is self sustaining and mobile form of energy that can be taken anywhere--even to outer space.

Folks ... let's make something clear here ... Solar energy will not replace fossil fuels in all its forms as it is used today ... However ... the story is like this ... that is, solar energy is very "expensive" but do you know that the production of CO2 when you burn fossil fuels is not yet part of the electricity bill? ... If you add the fossil fuel pollution to the total cost ... then ... maybe solar power is not that expensive ... At some point ... you have to do your own research and come to your own conclusions . Again ... here in Puerto Rico we have a lot of sun all year round ... but we also have a hurricane season ... Therefore our solar panels must be installed to withstand winds of around 150 MPH ... two years ago I completed an experimental project ... drop by ruclips.net/video/2nYy4M1FReY/видео.html. Comments are welcome. Thank you.

they long ago realized that we cannot provide enough energy to the parasitic class humans that keep breeding like flies so they decided to wipe this class out and they don't care about the collateral damage ( the working middle class) hence the "covid" "vaccine"

Government "investment" holds back R&D. Those that get it are on a gravy train, whilst those that don't are hindered by the inflated prices that the former creates by government intervention in addition to regulatory policies that make breakthroughs from independence more possible.

Why not embrace revolutionary technologies that supersede wind and solar but don't have the associated issues. I viewed some videos by the energy company H2IL Looks like they have the ultimate solution. Has wow factor! A large corporations need to snatch it up and solve our ever growing energy concerns.
