- Winter Car Camping Adventure - Solo Camping in Snow and Sub Freezing Temps!
Thank you for joining me for another ( Winter ) Jeep Overland Car Camping Adventure. In this adventure I brave the remote Oregon desert in below freezing temps and snow for an awesome winter car camping trip. The freezing temps and snow make for some interesting camping challenges but I manage to cook a coupe of great meals and find a few cool pieces of history in spite of the snow and winter conditions. Winter car camping is challenging but has some unique advantages too. I’ve always loved winter camping because of that. There are even less people on the trails and in the woods, there are no bugs, snakes, or scorpions out to worry about, and it is absolutely beautiful out in the high desert in the winter time.
I also try out a pretty unique new piece of gear on this trip the Original Fire Reflector from MC Ranch Overland. You can learn more about it at Mikes website mcranchoverland.com/ .
Hope you enjoy joining me for more of my overland, car camping, history hunting, and exploring in more of my videos. Above all, I hope you find some adventures of your own!
Cheers,
Casey

Great video Casey.
For sure.. It’s a pretty cool piece of kit!
Any camping video that starts with sizzling bacon is an instant winner!!! .👍
Ha! For sure. And no camping trip is complete without at least one meal with bacon in it! Cheers!
I still prefer the Coleman lanterns. And the Coleman camp stoves. They're efficient, and can also serve as a heat source.
They definitely still have their place. I would use them for sure in a canvas wall tent. Cheers!
We had 7” here on the North coast of NC. This was rare. Thank you for the video.
My parents live in garner, my mom was excited and made a little snowman on her car hood,
Another great video and lessons for winter camping. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Looking forward as always, for the past five years to watching more.
Campfire jumbolia. Nice reflector, even I can build. My own fire ring from farm store when I need one.
I know that was rough for you but it was entertaining for me. I laughed my ass off when you beeped your cuss.
Ha! You caught that! Lol.
Thanks for your winter overland camping video 😎👍
For sure my friend!
Thank you for taking us along with you!!! I appreciate the amount of time you spend filming your trips.
Excellent video Casey! As I always, my family and I look forward to your adventures.
Thanks you my friend. Glad you enjoyed!
i love being out in the snow like that!!! thanks for sharing the beautiful snow covered landscape & taking us along for the ride!!
For sure my friend! I also really enjoy the snow camping!
Love your videos, thanks for sharing the Oregon outdoors with us, I never realized how cool your state is
Always love your appreciation and attention to historical places and details. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mark!
Always looking forward to a new video, you made my day, stuck quarantined for a few more days, keep them coming !
For sure Brian! Hope your quarantine goes quickly for you! Glad you enjoyed.
My brahda very much appreciated and thank you for that trip out to Eastern Oregon, yeah lots of structures out there to explore more, stay safe and warm on your travels, hang loose see you lathas ✌🤙👍
Looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Another great adventure Casey. You’ve got your camping system dialed in👌
Thanks my friend. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the adventure! You're in one of the areas that we planned on exploring this summer. We are looking forward to exploring that area more now.
It’s a great area. You’ll enjoy exploring out there for sure. Might even run in to you out there!
Always love watching your videos.
Have a great day!
Thank you!
Like the content Casey, keep em coming.
Thanks my friend! I will for sure!
I still have our two early 1950's Coleman lanterns, and new mantles in little packets.
Yes I still have one or two as well as an old Coleman white gas stove. They all still work great and are probably about 70 years old now.
Yay!
Wow I learned so much! I do appreciate a visual on seeing how it’s done, lots of great info in here, and that one pot meal looks amazing! Thank you for taking us along on your journey and showing us how.
Hey buddy, great video, I enjoy them thoroughly. I remember when you only had couple of thousands subscribers. You have come a long way, keep it up. Just wondering does you-tube not pay enough to their creators anymore?
Thank you. And good to hear that you’ve been with me for so long. Yeah at my size of channel RUclips doesn’t pay much. Really not even enough to cover the fuel of my trips much less cameras, editing equipment, etc. I think it gets better for really big channels that have several hundred thousand subscribers but at my level the contributions from you guys are what keeps it going. Cheers!
Good to see ya brother, nice fire, great food, we love ya, peace.
Thank you! Appreciate that!
fire reflective wall is the great great product! i usually use alluminum foil for the job. it also works well !
Thank you! Yeah it worked well and saved me a lot of time building one like I usually do. Cheers!
Awesome video and thanks for sharing!! Safe travels
Thank you my friend!
I like that fire reflector a lot. Your grill looks pretty promising too. Watching along as I am preparing my fettuccine Alfredo with my own home grown garlic on top of the wood stove, only in the house where it is toasty cozy!
Oh man that sound delicious! Making me hungry! Cheers my friend!
Awesome Vid as Allways. Thanks 🍻
Thank you!
Great content Casey! Always a pleasure
Thank You!
Always fun to watch your adventures my friend. Thanks for taking us along.
Man, that snow and cold must have been rough to canp in! That prototype was cool as well as that reflective wall. Great video as always my friend! Thanks for all of the hard work you did to make this.
Nice video Casey..!
Thanks Dave!
Keep safety.. Thank you so much for sharing. Have a wonderful day and success for you 🤝🏻😊
For sure! Thank you!
Love this channel. I have been watching for years now. Your a great storyteller and have your vid setups down to a science. Great work and always happy to see your travel companions 🔫 in your vids.
Thanks my friend. Glad to hear from another who appreciates my kind of travel companions! And thanks for being there for so long now. Look forward to seeing you around for many more years I hope!
Great video Casey, I really enjoy camping in the snow, it just makes me feel like I’m a little bit further out there and living a little closer to the edge, i’m going to be looking into that reflective wall it looked very practical and easy to store ..
For sure. I also really enjoy the winter camping!
Such awesome country you live in and explore. Thanks for taking us!
Thank you my friend! I agree. So grateful to have the areas to explore around here.
Thanks for the shout out! I really love the new Tacoma. Can’t wait for Lolo to do their magic.
For sure! Looking forward to seeing it!
Thanks my friend, be safe.
For sure! You too my friend!
Enjoyed the video
Thanks for the adventure Casey
For sure Larry! Thanks for stopping by!
i think thats a nice invention
I have never been out in that area with snow! Looks like a really cool place to explorer in the winter. I used to enjoy the Little Glass Butte area a lot. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks my friend. Yeah I like that Glass Buttes area too! Cheers
As always, great video. Your "not very exciting" outings are still awesome! My favorite YT channel, hands down.
Thank you my friend! Always really appreciate hearing that!
Good video. 👍🏻
When I first saw that HUGE reflector I thought, "Oh no. Another gadget to take up the space I already don't have." But really, stored correctly, like under your mattress if doable, and it hardly takes any room. I can see where that would be far more effective than a rock wall at reflecting heat and wind sheilding. I see it as more of winter seasonal piece of gear, though if need be, it could be used as an oversize wind screen for a propane type stove in summer.
Hey it's Mike I'm the owner of MC Ranch Overland and the inventor of the Original Fire Reflector. We use ours all year round! It creates a controlled environment for cooking it preserves and your fuel resource. Then your fire doesn't burn exponentially fast in the wind. Also when there's a fire band and you're forced to use a propane fire pit that's a game changer as well. You can also combine two of them together to create a bigger nest for more people, if two families would happen to own one. You can use one for cooking and one for the campfire and after dinner combine them and create a nice big cozy nest for the families. Cheers and happy New Year Mike.
Yeah because it folds up so flat it’s really pretty convenient to pack. Around here we only really have fires in the winter so you’re right. I probably won’t pack it in the summer. But man it works great and is a huge time saver for the winter camping! Cheers.
You know that heat reflector warmed up, folded up and put under the sleeping bag would keep a guy kinda toasty till morning too!
@@patrickburgmeier7902 hey it's Mike the owner of MC Ranch Overland and the inventor of the Original Fire Reflector. It actually doesn't get hot when used and will not retain heat. We wanted it to be safe to touch for children etc not to get scalding hot. It works specifically off the principles of a parabolic arc and reflects heat like those large parabolic antennas that concentrate heat to a fulcrum. Cheers Mike
@@mcranchoverland I first saw your product when epic family started using it… it’s great to see your still doing well!!! I’ll keep saving my pennies and hopefully get one ordered this spring! It’s definitely a fantastic piece of gear for the over landing community!
Hello Casey Thankyou for a new awesome great video. I love watching your channel. You take care and be safe sir. I love history and metal detecting and camping. Me and my girlfriend both love watching your videos.we live in northern Louisiana. I like the grill. If you make them I will buy one Casey
For sure. Thank you my friend! Glad you enjoyed the video! My sister lives in Southern LA. I love how different that country is from what we have here! Cheers!
great video!
Winter camping is a lot of fun!
Nice video!
Thanks for the ride along and the tip on the hand warmers, great idea! Creeping up on 75K, nice to see the progress on the channel. Cheers
Thanks my friend. Yeah it’s still growing slowly. Cheers!
@@CoyoteWorks01 Bro, What tires you rennin on the jeep? I have 16 x 8 cooper discover AT3's on the 4Runner and think I could do better in snow conditions. Their not bad and real quiet but a bit slippery in hard pack snow, but that's a bitch anyway! Thanks
Great set up Casey, nice winter outdoor cooking ! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱❤️🇺🇸💪🥇😀
Love that reflector wall. Looks terrific
Oh man it worked really well. Spendy but worth it as many campfires as I build!
Thanks for taking us with you Casey.
For sure! Always a pleasure to have you along!
So awesome how you’re able to get drone shots while you’re driving. I enjoy your winter adventures the most.
Cool.
Great videos Casey!! I'd buy it !
I was just out at Frederick Butte. Will be back there for sure, try to find those sites. Great video as always!
I enjoy your winter adventure videos and that looks like a very interesting area to explore. Awesome vid
Thank you my friend!
I like the grill too. The rod could be longer for us beach campers. I think I like shorts & t-shirt camping better!
Thats a good point on the longer rod for in the beach sand. Thanks for the feedback!
I love your videos so much and so much information as well. I love your grille and love your idea and I hope you’re successful with it! Count me in for an order of that grille!
Another great video. Thanks man!🙏
Thanks my friend!
@@CoyoteWorks01 I’m hoping when travel between our countries returns to normal I can go on one of your planned group excursions!
Great video again Casey.
Thank you. And good to hear from you as always! You doing well my friend?
@@CoyoteWorks01 doing good. My 7 year old daughter and I just recovered from covid same time. Like father like daughter ❤️ 🙂 how's everything going on your side? If you like the coffee I have more I need to send to you.
Looks like it was a cool winter adventure! Loved it!
Thanks Dave. Yes I really enjoyed it out there!
Oh man, that chow looks simple yet amazing! I'll definitely have to copy that when I camp out in the Sierras.
Here is Oregon as well, enjoy your videos.
Amazing adventure.
Thank you!
I’ve watched this video so many times. Your winter adventures are my favorite. Hope all is well with you, Casey. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen you on a new adventure. Hope to see you soon.
Been wondering too. Hopefully all ok, it's very uncharacteristic.
@@MarxAlex Hope Casey is OK!
Homer: "Butter your bacon...Bacon up that sausage, boy."
Ha! For sure. The only way to improve on bacon is by cooking it in butter! Lol
That fire wall is really cool!
Hey Casey put on the list of one of those fabricated grills, nice video enjoyed it.
Will do my friend. And thanks for the feedback on it.
Ever heard the quote from Henry Ford? “Chop your own wood and it will warm you twice” love these videos so much.
Ha! I have heard that. And it definitely has merit. Cheers!
I like the grill. I have a larger one already, but for the size I really like your design for solo adventures.
Yeah it works pretty well for me for sure. Thanks for the feedback! Cheers!
Great video. Us western new yorkers say no problem. That's not much. Just had 15inches of heavy wet snow
Ha! Yeah it was cold but overall turned out to be a pretty mild trip. Just cold enough to make it interesting ;-). Cheers!
Thx for the vid, but BRRRR, I don't miss that white stuff at all, but love the neighborhood, thx Casey
Ha! Yeah it was a bit chilly for sure ;-)
once again youve inspired me to get out and camp!
Awesome my friend! I hope you do. Can’t wait to hear back on how your adventures go!
Nice piece of work buddy. Glad to see your still at it.
Thanks my friend! For sure. I’ll probably keep doing it until I’m to old and decrepit! Cheers!
Great video thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
That bacon in butter seemed like I imagine heaven! Yes I would be interested in that grill
Oh yeah. Can’t get much better than bacon fried up in a little butter right!? Thanks for the feedback on the grill too!
Love your big territory Casey. Great for camping. Cheers from the UK.
Thanks my friend! Yeah it is huge territory out there. Lots of room to roam and explore. Cheers!
My first time seeing your channel, awesome to see such positivity and appreciation for an adventure even if not in ideal circumstances. That's the dream brother! An easy sub from me. Maybe I'll see you on the trail some day.
Awesome Calvin! Glad you found it and really appreciate hearing from you. I hope I do run into you out on the trail someday! Cheers!
Say Casey you've seen the movie Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford, anyway in a scene of the movie a mountain man was teaching Jeremiah about the mountain ways, and he took coals from the fire, spread them out and put dirt down, then slept on them. I was thinking that taking a few of the coals of the fire and putting them in a steel box and put it in the tent to keep you nice and toasty till morning. A bigger box and a handful of coals would do the trick and wouldn't get to hot to melt anything. Something like a army ammo can. You would want it pretty much air tight. Just an idea. Even if you would heat some rocks up and put them in a ammo can would help.
Oh man that is one of my all time favorite movies. I think I saw it for the first time when I was about 10 years old!
Wow that fire wall was amazing. That would sure make a big difference throwing heat back at you. 🇨🇦👍
One of the things that put me off from the kovea table that you use was that I didn't think you would be able to put a hot pan on it without scorching it or discoloring it or possibly burning it. I see the bamboo is much more durable than I thought!
I don't know how you do it but you make me want to go out and winter camp 😆 Cheers!
Yeah that Kovea table holds up better than I expected. It doesn’t seem to be effected by setting hot pans, etc. on it. Cheers Ted!
Hey There - another great video and as always you made me feel like I was out there with you. That’s actually one of the things I enjoy the most about your videos you always make me/us feel like I’m/we are with you. I love camping in the winter especially when there is snow on the ground. I’d have to say late autumn into early winter is my favourite time to camp. No bugs to deal with plus you can do stuff without getting all sweaty and you can have a camp fire. I have all the right gear for doing it the way you did in this video plus I have an Arctic Fox travel trailer that I use when my grandson is with me. The trailer is nice to have so my grandson, who’s 9, can play in the snow all throughout the day then he can come inside and have a hot shower while I make dinner. After dinner we either sit around the fire or we can be inside the warm trailer and play a game at the table or read before going to bed. It also makes it possible for my son and his wife to bring my newest grandson, 8 months old, out there camping as well. Anything that makes it easier to get the entire family out there is worth it. My son and I have been wandering central Oregon and beyond for more than 30 years. Now I get to enjoy taking my grandson outdoors and doing what he calls “bushcrafty” stuff lol. I’m actually surprisedi haven’t bumped into you at least once lol. Of course I’m usually a bit to the east of where you wander over by 97 and 138, Chemult area. WMU 77 & 33,+ 34&35 is where you can find me most of the time.
I’ll have to wander out your way sometime, it would fun to bump into you and maybe you can teach me a thing or two lol. I even bring some targets with me most of the time and don’t mind sharing lol
Cheers
Hey man . I was on google maps looking at a still standing homestead site and saw you camped there . How funny lol
Been following you for many years One thing I really love about your channel is you keep it real. You show what most of us have a good veh no ultra expensive equipment You show what most of us can do and afford. Keep up the excellent work I can really appreciate the snow and cold there. I never knew true cold until the Navy sent me to Newport RI for 2 years! LOL Stay true my friend! Look forward to many more years of this channel
The gear that he uses is really expensive! The reflector is $400 and it goes on and on.
Thank you my friend. It’s really cool to hear that you appreciate what I’m doing. I love it out there and want anyone else who wants to get out there to know that it’s in reach for them. Doesn’t take a lot to be comfortable and have a nice time out there. Cheers!
When you were breaking camp I kept seeing your chain saw in the tree and thought oh no!! Great adventure while I had breakfast!!
Ha! Yeah I’m glad I didn’t forget it. I always take a last walk around my camp after I’m all packed up to make sure I’m not leaving anything. Cheers my friend!
Another great adventure Casey, I can appreciate the difficulty filming in those conditions. Beautiful country - Safe Travels! Warren.
Thank you my friend. Safe travels out there!
OMG Casey that meal looks great you always step It up with your cooking and New gadgets I love your new fire grill contraption that would come in handy and New age Bushcraft
Oh man it was good! Thanks my friend! Cheers.
For better heat off your fire put a silver survival blanket on poles behind you and will reflect the heat back at you we do this camping in Scotland
That’s a great tip my friend. Good to hear from Scotland! Cheers!
This is a really cool channel!!
Thank you!
Loved the video! Also think meal sounded yummy. Thanks for info & helpful ideas with hand warmers too in sleeping bag. If you decide to make the grills on a stake, i would be interested if affordable for us. Thanks again for an interesting video.
The aluminum stove over the fire is a great idea! I’ve seen cast iron ones but they were too big and heavy. I’d be down for one!
Stay safe out there, buddy👍🎩🍻⛏
For sure my friend! Happy hunting out there. I’ll be watching all your cool finds! Cheers 🍻
Casey, really enjoyed the video. On the Water Jug with a Harbor Fright moving blanket.
Wrap the moving blanket at least twice. It works for me. If the water freezes.
Chances are the water filter media in the cartridge, will be rendered useless.
In turn needing to be replaced. Cheers, Mate.
Thanks for the tip on replacing the filter! I better check that. It has frozen on me once so i may need to replace that filter. Cheers!
Hi Casey, i’ve never seen you on deep snow trip it’s looks great;i’ve been waiting for a long time for this interesting video from cold Oregon. I’m getting colder. From Australian
Summer. Cheers.
Hi Ted. Good to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah I really enjoy the winter camping but it’s definitely more challenging to film. Cheers my friend!
Wow man, you make a LOT of food.
Another great video Casey. Got to use my evolution tent finally last weekend down to 10° People say I’m nuts for going out there when it’s this cold I’m just so glad there are other nuts out there thanks again for the video and Count me in for the grill if you make them
Yeah I really enjoy my winter camping. Glad to hear you got that Evolution out. I really like mine. I’ll keep you posted on the grills!
@@CoyoteWorks01 Great thanks!
Great video. Funny, I used my Ready Light for the first time over the weekend and didn't think anyone was close to me camp, I guy came over and said "Can you redirect that light, your blinding me" Then of course asked me all about it, etc. Next day he said he ordered his. Told about you and your gear.
Ha! That’s a great story! It’s one of my go to pieces of gear for sure!
27:14......"alright we're just gonna go for a quick little walk here..."
pulls out giant firearm hahahahha
Ha! Love walking in the woods with an over under! Lol.
