Melbourne's Hidden Gem: All-You-Can-Eat Sri Lankan Buffet ($15us) Australia's Best Sri Lankan Feast

- The diversity and quality of food in Australia is superb! So many diverse flavours and cultures at one’s fingertips. And no place in Australia has such abundance of cuisine than in Melbourne. On this day of exploring, I thought I’d visit some of the local family owned eateries that make up the vibrant authentic food scene here.
I’m happy to have found a restaurant focusing on traditional authentic Sri Lankan cuisine! …and it gets better because we can sample and try a variety of dishes because this is a buffet! It is a little away from Melbourne Central so first, we’ll make a stop for just a light snack, and I have the perfect place for it. A while ago I passed by a Wang’s Crispy Pancake where they offer thin pancakes stuffed with meats and other fillings cooked in a tandoor style oven made to order. I just couldn’t resist a thin and crispy meaty snack.
Next on the stop is Serendib, a small neighbourhood restaurant hoping to bring Sri Lankan cuisine to Australia hoping to showcase this cuisine and for all to experience the unique flavors of the beautiful island and country of Sri Lanka. And their pride and detail to the Sri Lankan cuisine shows. Traditional foods of meats and gravies and curries are found throughout the restaurant along with live stations making fresh hoppers! Plain hoppers and egg hoppers with crispy thin edges and light spongy centers used to soak up the wonderful flavours and sauces from the buffet offerings. From hearty family style meals to the kuttu street food you’d find in Columbo, it’s a great way to explore and taste the diversity and variety of the Sri Lankan cuisine. Just a few tips, make sure to stop at the condiment station where you’ll find the best caramelize onions and chutneys to go on your plate, be kind to LSD (the cook making the hoppers) as he’ll keep you plate stocked, and don’t be afraid to eat with your hands.

Thanks for taking us to a Sri Lankan buffet. I enjoy learning about different foods from different countries. Melbourne looks amazing. 👍🏻🌹👍🏻

They probably do a booming business. Offer people good food at a decent price, and the crowds will beat down your door.
Fantastic values with all the wonderful curry and the made to order hoppers. Would highly recommend it.

There’s a good cinema across the road from the restaurant (Valhalla Cinema)
There’s another 25$ Sri Lankan all you can eat place at 252 St. George’s Road North Fitzroy. It’s called Citrus. (96 Tram, also from Bourke street in the city. )

I just have to compliment your willingness to mix dishes to make the tastiest bite to your preference! I always dip and mix my foods and try different combos, many other reviewers refuse to try stuff any other way than as is or how is intended. It's way more pleasant to see you enjoy everything however you like without being blocked by that snobbish ideal of only as is.

No clue what foods Australia is known for, but learning only from Tim; they seem to do everything wonderfully! (or maybe Tim is only hitting the best looking spots! 😂🙌 )
In general, I found that the authenticity and the quality of the food in Melbourne to be very good. A highly recommend place to visit.

Would highly recommend it… There are a variety of dishes so you can pick and shoes. some you would like some you may not but it’s always fun to try

Hey Tim I have never been to that Sri Lanken Buffet, wow I need to try that one out the food looks wonderful.
Really enjoyed exploring and visiting all the different neighbourhood restaurants in the Preston area and in high Street. That bone marrow pizza I had was to none.

It's Mallum that is made with some nutritious leaves of a tree. We,sri lankans love to eat them cause mallum is good for your eyes for they have Vitamins.❤

You have to please try “Bula bites” authentic FIJIAN cuisine! The curry lamb, tuna roti parcel, chicken chop suey, cassava chips sooo good!! They are located 614 Ballarat rd, Ardeer. A HIDDEN GEM IN MELBOURNE WESTERN SUBURBS!
If you go to KL Malaysia, there are 3 variations of so called hopper too. I love those 3 types

Really impressed with the diversity of the cuisines in Australia and also their food quality.
Tim, on that plate of goodies you need a spoon to handle everything that is being mixed up. Everything looks really good but I would have to watch out for the spicy food. At my age (84) I love to eat all types of food.That egg Hopper is really unique and can be mixed with everything. A little bit here and a little bit there I think the hopper could be used with everything😋😋😋😁

It was a great spread, and I think the only thing that was not authentic was a level of heat. Nothing was overly spicy, which I suspect is not the case in Sri Lanka.😉

I had Sri Lankan food the other day! They are completely different tastes, different way of using spices when compared with Indian food. Its amazing how tastes can be completely different evem though they are next to each other. I would place Sri Lankan cusine closer to Indonesian or Malaysian or Tahi and not Indian!

Some times its funny how hard it is to eat our food for you.
For us it's like 30 seconds plate.
70% of these dishes are Indian. The same formula is used by Pakistani restaurants. Lotsa love ❤
