Hated by the world, but millions seem to want and come and live here? Extremely proud of being English! Our history is chequered at best, but we along with our fellow Brits, Scotland, wales, and Northern Ireland, created the modern world that you take for granted. Look it up. You're using one of them right now!

You should react to other British patriotic songs such as I vow to thee my country land of hope and glory or rule Britannia

English people are the direct descendants of the Jutes (Judah) hence the lions and anthem. Saxe was a leader of the Jutes. How many today know he was even a person?

The poem refers to an old legend that Joseph of Arimathea (who buried Jesus in his own tomb ) a Tin trader and Jesus's uncle, Visited England to buy Tin ( England supplied the whole Mediterrainain world with tin at that time) and according to the legend he brought the Young Jesus with him.
