My 81 year old father sang to my mom at her funeral here in California. He sang in our Ilocano dialect the song he wrote about her. It was a surprise to us, the family, but glad that he mustered the strength to do it. I remember him singing that song to her when she was still in the hospital and maybe in a few other occasions. I just wish that my American friends at the funeral understood the lyrics of the song because it was a beautiful tribute to her. 2 years later, Dad passed on and I can imagine them singing together in heaven.

This Filipino guy was really brave to sing in front of his wife's funeral. Also, your wife is correct, in our culture(Philippines)during funeral,we don't need to wear a tuxedo or Filipino national clothes, what's important to us is the presence and the sympathy of the people. I cried as well because of your wife💙

I read their child’s reply somewhere. Apparently tatay (we call old man as a sign of respect) is a seafarer, capt. He was onboard when his wife died and only got to see her on the 3rd day aftr she dies after he got repatriated and her remains was brought to her hometown. Then he sang her the song right after . we sometimes do that at a funeral here in the Philippines. Music plays a big role in our culture and most Filipinos know how to sing. It's in our blood and culture when we are courting a woman, we call it "Harana", on special occasions, worshipping in church, even in times of sorrow, etc... It's how we Filipinos express our emotions through singing.

This man singing for his dear late wife happened during the viewing not on the day of the funeral like judging what the husband wears he just arrived from overseas because he was a ship captain. A lot of reactors from YT asked why the husband isn't wearing a formal attire ie. tuxedo or Filipino national dress for men. This is heartbreaking to watch knowing a family man like this working overseas away from his family and then going home only to find out his wife passed away!

This man was an Overseas Filipino Worker(OFW).. a ship captain(intl).. and this was his private moment with his wife during the wake as soon as he arrived… coming home with your spouse in a coffin or your son or a daughter or even your parent is the most painful thing for an OFW..
BTW.. the Philippines is a tropical country thats why we don’t wear tuxedos.. we just dress up decently most of he times the relatives are in white simple clothing.
I know what you are saying about maybe hired singers in a funeral? Its not common among filipinos although i heard it is among Chinese culture ..
This went viral because this husband was so brave to show his grief in front of his wife’s wake… most filipino men will just be silent holding back their grief.. even their tears are not so much shown in public thats why this recording was in private and maybe the one who recorded it was the one who uploaded it on youtube😢😢😢

@lennine9881 you forgot doctors, engineers, teachers, pilot, captains and CEO. There are a lot of doctors in the US who are Filipinos but they are forgotten to be called out because the focus is on the nurses. Even most topped the diplomate exam. Maybe because they either look like Mexicans or Chinese. Really sad. And teachers as well there a lot and soldiers too. My mom is teacher, my brother and sister are both engineer and my sister is a nurse soldier and me a doctor not in the philippines. Maybe because we are just silent, but the other nation who got a Filipino nanny immediately make blogs about her and immediately whole nation judge and stereotype Filipi os only having these jobs. Really sad

For samoans, when it's usually the night before the burial, the family stays/sleeps over with the loved one who had passed. We sing and talk stories. We are in regualr home clothes. It's not a service but a family thing. I'm not sure how Filipinos do it, but I found it normal to see him in his regular clothes.

We Filipinos convey our feelings through singing, even in the event in our times of our loved one's funeral. We are not dressed in tuxedos; just comfortable clothes will do. Besides, this is not getting views on social media because it differs from how we mourn. I really cried my heart out. It is a fact of life that we all must endure and experience. Condolence to his family.
