I remember quite vividly an interview from the 90s on an old dial-up website interview, I think it was dated sometime in late 1994 not long after the album was out. Trent Reznor wrote this song not as an anti-Christian song, but the whole song was actually about bad priests who create "their own versions of gods", which are "dead" to Trent and most average people. When I first heard the song, my interpretation was similar. Trent was going through a spiritual crisis and started going to church while he was writing The Downward Spiral from 1992 to 1993. He was angry that the priest said racist and homophobic things, the priest saying things like "Aids is God's answers to gays" and other things like "WW2 was to make people suffer and get close with God". Trent saw that this vision of the priest's god was completely man-made and corrupted and hypocritical (drowing in his own hypocracy), and not at all what the real God would have wanted, which Trent was trying to find. Ever since, he never went to church and practiced God in his own way (something like a very loose spiritual Christian agnostic). It's similar to when Marilyn Manson said, "I never really hated the one true God but the God of the people I hated".
I use to listen to this in my gun turret while cruising through Iraq. Oddly enough, listening to the word of God through the chaplain and mixing it with the opposite word of Trent Reznor got me through some dark times. Like a PB&J of good and evil.
My best friend fought in Iraq, he listens to this for similar reasons.. I haven't seen the man since 2018, tho I still talk to him.. He taught me how to fight, how to use my fists, and how to control my rage and walk away. It's always good to have a brother. I hope you're well
Not sure if you’re the type who likes hearing this or doesn’t like hearing it, since I know some people are of two minds on it, but thank you for your service. The war may have been wrong in my opinion, but the soldiers are not to blame, and deserve respect and gratitude. Hope your life is full of peace now.
That's some body music. Probably the best one cuz it's not just electronic or just instrumentals. And The samples and snipetsn of people cheering and praising make it even more sinister.
I love the intro synth, reminds me of the Syphon Filter theme. Terminator theme also comes to mind, a very futuristic sound, post-apocalyptic synthwave lol.
I thought he was saying " I don't want to And I can't turn back" Like when n P' oz met Zig in the huanted tunnel Turns out he was saying " I want to but can't turn back" Like P'oz when she realized Zig was just as spooky as the witch and her son....

@@Bear-yn5xj one way to see the lyrics could be that we as religious people have lost faith in God and do all kinds of sinful acts, as in "God isn't really dead, but we have started to care so little about him that it's almost as if he were dead (to us)" We know some things we do are wrong but we keep doing them anyway. This song is great with or without vocals. Hats off to you kind sir or madam for the upload :D
1:56 This is essentially the same thing done on the end of Closer
that’s the downward spiral motif 🤯 ( I love it so much )
Thank God for this instrumental!
This sounds like it’s could fit doom
Almost any Nine Inch Nails song with a dark energetic Industrial beat could fit with Doom.
NIN did the soundtrack for Quake in 1996
Chris Vrenna (NIN live drummer for some time) did the soundtrack for Doom 3.

Sounds good. Very powerful and groovy.
Out of all the YTPs that this song was in, I finally found it
This was in YTPs?
@@cornwallacemontgomery Yes apparently. Weird huh?

im surprised nothing from NIN was in hm or hm2
If Perturbator remixed it....
My god... That'd be amazing...
Stress relief

I need the instrumental for a dance project...no cussing allowed in class so I'm hoping this is squeaky clean yet enough to blow their minds...

Wow awesome picture for the song , and bad ass instrumental !
This is the only version I can listen to and not be uncomfortable lol
POV: Your god is not dead.
Dang it
Opinion - no one cares.

He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see
He tries to tell me what i put inside of me
Perfect
The phrase "God is dead and no one cares" is so strong that I never paid attention to the rest
This should be in the next Mad Max
Where can I find this on a CD or on iTunes? I like this version best.
Okay this the one...that ks for it ima dance a freakin hole in it...
Good to work to. If you work out put it on your play list.
