Ever since I read Voyage For Maden, I have been fascinated with the Golden Globe race, Robin Knox Johnson, Bernard Montissier and Donald Crowhurst. Even though he brought his troubles upon himself one cannot feeling bad for him. And realizing the tremendous stress he created for himself.
Jerome - totally impressed with this format. No one could do it but you because of your experience. And the way you just tell the story in an organized way off of the top of your head is impressive. I think this format is the ticket for you. Met you Lady’s island d-dock, little blue Bayliner.
Hey! I remember, well thanks for the note and I know I am just starting but I hope to improve as time goes on. I have so many stories I have read on those long trips at sea. all the best!
I’ve always liked the Crowhurst story the doc on PBS is great and the book a voyage for madmen is even better. You can go insane on a boat. When it’s all getting to you and you gotta walk it off. One of the best quotes in that book is Don was “almost a weekend sailer”
It is such a crazy story, I have battled with my brain out at sea sometimes but to be in his shoes would have been unbearable. So much pressure mixed with the isolation and danger of the boat falling apart.
I’ve read the books and seen the documentaries about Donald Crowhurst and feel similar to you, I didn’t really appreciate the pressure he was under from his sponsors when I read Peter Nicholls book when I was younger. Watching the great documentary and also the film with Colin Firth, it highlights more of the pressures he felt. It is an incredible story with so many twists and turns. I’m friends with Don McIntyre who runs the GGR which did a 50 year anniversary race in 2018 and is running a second race as we speak. The same pressures of isolation and bad preparation have affected some of the entrants despite being far less isolated than those in the original race. As Don says the GGR is a mind game. Btw I love that hat, I want one, lol. Glad to find your channel but I will probably be binge watching now…. Fair winds. Andy UK
Excellent story. I watched the documentary on this and it was also good. For some reason I enjoy these sorts of stories where someone gets an idea that is about 95% sound and they can’t get talked out of it. That last 5% can be disastrous.

Great telling of an epic sea story. Like the setting and your comfortable delivery.
