Brilliant- he was a rare breed- actor, singer, dancer, athlete, an a gentleman. The steps he does @4:18 is extremely difficult to master, but no problem for this exceptionally talented man. His agnosticism, his liberal views including his support for Unions, & the Irish independence movement, made him a few enemies then, as they would today in the States. A fine man, a fine artist. Missed, in today's shallow entertainment world. Thanks gene, for all the wonderful movies, dances & songs.
Any other "star" would have stopped and demanded a "do over" (& probably have the kid canned). His response was like that of a dad. He obviously wasn't in love with himself.
I’m 9 months pregnant and getting induced today. I’m away from all family (except my husband) because of the Coronavirus, and we have been told he may not be able to visit baby and I in the hospital after delivery which breaks my heart. My parents can’t come to see us in Ireland now either which is so hard. But, seeing this video, well-brings a tear to my eye. I have someone to love (and will soon have a new baby to love); so, despite all the bad things, who could ask for anything more? Love Gene Kelly, and thankful I randomly looked at this clip again after a few years of not seeing this gem!
Well I am so lucky and grateful I was born in 1929 and was able to watch so many wonderful Movies. Made me laugh, Cry, Smile, How lucky we were to have so many wonderful Movie STARS to idolize. These days I still watch Movies from the past. I thank all for these Happy Times.
This video has so many wins. 1. Happy Children. 2. An impromptu language lesson. 3. An old timesy tune, an extremely catchy one at that. 4. TAP DANCING, 5. He sure darn GOT rhythm!
He really had a knack for working with children. They said he differed from most actors back then because he was so natural and genuinely enjoyed being around kids, not just acting to be happy for the sake of the silver screen unlike some others around the time. I suppose having kids of his own (Kerry Gene would've been 9 at the time) and being the middle child of 5 kids might've helped as well.
Gene Kelly was an exceptional dancer, and though I like Fred Astaire there was something whimsical about Kelly's performances and his devilish charm became an integral part of his routines. He was clearly gifted, but his charisma made him unique. I will always enjoy his work. A great artistic legacy.
I love Gene Kelly without question! This man is a legend and always will be in our hearts! I love you Gene and we will never forget you for the rest of our lives!!!!! Gene Kelly R.I.P we miss you very dearly
what marvdelous memoriesw come to my memory!!! I saw this film at its premiere back in 1951 (or 1952?) I was a youngster at that time - Now I'm 87 (2022) Greetings from Lima, Peru
I have a close friend who is an artist and is such an absolute perfectionist with his work that it takes him a whole week to finish a simple commission. And God help anyone or anything that interferes! He offered to help someone in our class with a project and wound up verbally abusing them. My friend and Mr. Kelly are similar in that outside of work, they a shiny gem that lit up the room. When getting down down to business, they turn into North Korea.
He's so great you can't even see the extra tap at 2:31 ! I love Kelly. Swell guy, great dancer. as Betsy said: He democratized dance. Who could ask for anything more ;)
I LOVE Gene Kelly and I LOVE this song. PERFECT COMBINATION!!! Too bad I'm a couple decades too late to have my shot with Gene. =( Oh well. I get to sit home all afternoon and swoon as he dances effortlessly across my computer screen! lol
I think this should be mentioned due to an earlier message: Gene Kelly has said that he owes a lot of tap dancing to Irish stepdancing and the styles called jigging and clogging. That is where tapdancing really originated. Black dancers borrowed steps from the Irish, and both groups helped develop it into the tapdancing that became so popular and happily persistent.
Definition of the perfect man...musically talented, sense of humor, athletic, and the perfect gentleman...sigh! is there a modern day equivalent anymore?!
Let me tell you all something I never thought I would say. I have coached 297 All-Americans and 45 NCAA champions, professional athletes in baseball, football, basketball and hockey, USA track & field, and USA bobsled. And none of them had the body control of this gifted athlete. At 4:18.... amazing!
hahaha loving the frenglish. What an amazing song though just need to find the full film now almost as good as his rollerskate dancing in always fair weather :-)
Apparently Gene was fluent in French. Very intelligent as well as a superb multi talented guy. Lovely to look at. Very handsome. He had the whole package. Great scene with some super dancing from Gene who makes it look so easy.
"I've got" all of the memories and fun everytime we reconnect our rhythm with our unstoppable dancers/friendly street participants. Stay safe everyone!
He is one of a kind. Let's not forget the black tap dancers that contributed to his success. Henry LeTang, Bunny Briggs...to name two great legends. They will all be missed. If I close my eyes I can hear a soft shoe done on the clouds...
When I was in second grade we did a mix of Annie and An American in Paris and this was the only song we did. The story was that The American in Paris opened the orphanage to everyone so everyone got adopted,it was in French and I speak English so I always knew what everyone was saying
@WSenator1 This scene with the kids happens before he meets Leslie Caron, "Lise". He had just met Milo Roberts, his sponsor w/ his painting career. Kelly's character was just hangin' with the kids when they finally begged him to teach them English & an American song & dance. How come I didn't meet someone this cool growing up? dag!
It's 8:00 pm, 2/1/17. And I'm watching Gene Kelley's wonderful dance sequences. And readily I conclude that Kelly was Michael Jackson's influence. His super sensational dance creations. And, yes, the way Kelley's pants reveal his socks and sandals, a definite MJ influence, among many others. Between the two creative geniuses, I loved Kelly. He was such a free person, body and soul. It was in his movements. The smile.
My two favorite dancers were Gene Kelly and Ray Bolger. I do not believe there is any record of them having ever danced together. I have never seen any video of such. He did dance with Astaire a couple of times.
Hmmm, I don't think this is the best outlet for ranting and raving over rap music and such. How about let's give Gene some love for this terrific piece of film? Love Gene Kelly!
Girl @3:20: Qu'est-ce que c'est que ca? Gene: Je n'sais pas... A nice nod to the spirit of improvisation there (on one of the most improvised-over tunes in the whole jazz repertoire).
Brilliant- he was a rare breed- actor, singer, dancer, athlete, an a gentleman.

Thanks gene, for all the wonderful movies, dances & songs.
It's so sweet at 1:30 when the little boy says his line too soon and Gene's just like dawwww it's okay buddy.
woohooooooooooo *1:30
Any other "star" would have stopped and demanded a "do over" (& probably have the kid canned). His response was like that of a dad. He obviously wasn't in love with himself.

George Gershwin's music and Gene Kelly's dancing create a masterpiece.

I love it. Gene Kelly is a dancing master.
Everything he does is gold.
Pure magic! I love the way Gene Kelly relates so beautifully to the children...
Pure magic, pure joy, gorgeously & wonderfully orchestrated sequence w/ the absolute brilliance of Gene Kelly. Charlot!

How I wish I'd been alive when this film was released, must have been wondrous times x
Gosh. You don't see that in a movie very often nowadays. Actual talent.
whenever I watch this film I remember why I love this man
So true, movies were so terrific back then. TCM is always on in my house, and Gene Kelly is by far one of my favorites. Truly a great star.
I absolutely adore Gene Kelly. He was so unique, talented, and indeed very handsome.
He's so great you can't even see the extra tap at 2:31 !
I love Kelly. Swell guy, great dancer. as Betsy said: He democratized dance.

I have not seen anythign else quite like Gene Kelly's Aeroplane tap dancing in any of the old musicals I've seen. Love Love LOVE Gene Kelly :)
They don't make films like these anymore. Brilliant just brilliant. :)

Maybe NPH?
Chubby Bubby , Neal is a great talent but he can't dance.
*_Neil Patrick Harris it is!_*
Hugh Jackman!!
Gene never fails to cheer me up.
I was born in 1984 and I tell you, I was a huge fan of Gene Kelly's when I was a little boy. He was an incredible performer.
Kelly such an interesting actor/dancer-unique combination of reedy voice, sturdy physique, boyish smile and bit of a Irish tough, too.
Ah Could nt get through my days now without watching Gene ,can’t get enough of him singing or dancing ,best thing to hit the big screen xxx
greatest male dancer and sweetest actor ever, imho.
i am always amazed with his talent and athleticism---he was truly a man whose mere physical talent carried over into all he did
definitely. Balance, splendid timing, coordination, power and speed. And, for his day, he is built like a linebacker.
Let me tell you all something I never thought I would say. How can ANYONE not love this?
I ve been listening to the audio pf this song for years( I recorded from the radio) and now I am so happy to find the video here!

I love this movie. Gene Kelly is great!
Thanks for the video
What a talent...and he really spoke a very good french: you can watch some Gene's interviews for the French TV on ina.fr (TV archives).
in today's era a man doing this on the street with children would be suspicious as heck.
Not necesary
Cuantos buenos momentos le debo a Gene Kelly, el musical americano de los 50 es una maravilla, y Kelly mi favorito.
une pure merveille Gene Kelly et les gamins
brilliant- and Gene kelly looks like he's really enjoying it!
TCM was one of the only channels i would watch when i had cable.
Who's still watching this timeless classic in 2019?
What amazing style, Gene will always be my absolute favorite!
Apparently Gene was fluent in French. Very intelligent as well as a superb multi talented guy. Lovely to look at. Very handsome. He had the whole package. Great scene with some super dancing from Gene who makes it look so easy.

Gorgeous Gene. Love you so much. ♥️
Just read that this version of the song I’ve got rhythm From the soundtrack album was inducted into the Grammy hall of fame in 2006. Well deserved!
He is one of a kind. Let's not forget the black tap dancers that contributed to his success.

Ugh that would've been me. I mean, Gene is RIGHT THERE.
+ggfanjase if that guy is still alive, i would like to ask him some questions about the kelly booty

Absolutely. Lovely legs under the trousers.
He worked out a lot even in his twilight years. He taught many how to dance. He was buff.
One of the most entertaining things I've ever seen in my life =)
Timeless brilliance.
That made me happy while I was sad! :)
I'd never noticed that before! It is sure cute and is another reason that proves Gene knew how to work with children.
Brilliant! Gene must be where MJ got the white socks.
HAPPY 101st BIRTHDAY BABY!!! :D Love you forever Gene!! :D
What a man!!!
the musical genre does not exist
exists only Gene Kelly
enrico moretti what does that even mean?
I guess that's correct. Musicals were a type of movie. An American in Paris was more than just a musical, it was a dance movie.
That's pretty much the most adorable thing ever.
