I just saw "Tap", which I haven't seen in YEARS. What a talent! (And, I always remembered that cute little boy who played Suzzanne Douglas' son, and was an incredible dancer himself.... and didn't realize until tonight that that was Savion Glover!). I am now watching "White Nights", which I have NEVER seen....and Hines spoke beautiful Russian, and was a great actor to boot. But watching him here....my God, how gifted was he. We lost a wondrous talent, a beautiful treasure. Multi-talented, gorgeous, sexy, and gone much too soon.
What kind of shape was he in to dance like that, and then belt out those powerful notes, strongly and clearly, and not even seem winded?!?? Amazing talent!!
I had the great privilege and honor to meet Gregory Hines in 1986 At LAX airport. I was coming back from Hawaii and had a layover there. I was at a newsstand looking at a magazine, I looked up and Gregory was standing right next to me. I was shocked and excited to meet him and told him how great I thought he was and he thanked me. I’m reading some of the comments here and one of them say he seemed like a nice guy. I just want to write to tell you he was more than nice, he was a class act. R.I.P. you are truly missed.
I remember a clip in which Sammy Davis Jn. in his final days made a throwing motion to Gregory Hines, as if to pass the ball to him...singing, dancing and acting.
I'm a huge Gene Kelly fan, but I love how Gregory Hines dances. They're both such masculine dancers. Hines is so loose and relaxed but controlled at the same time so all the steps are perfect. He almost attacks the dancing. There's nobody like him. I'm sad that they're both gone.
Great comment. Dunno how "masculine" Hines is, though. I LOVE him. But he seems catlike, so relaxed yet never misses, as you said. It's like he's always almost falling but catches himself and that's part of the tapping. It's more universal, transcends masculinity or femininity, though certainly appealing. Whatever it is, it's fantastic!!
Gregory Hines!! A mesmerizing and exceptional talent who also left this world too soon. Thank God he left us a shining legacy for all of us to applaud and cherish!!
Yes, I noticed the ever-debonair Cary Grant. I named our beautiful family cat C.K. "Dexter" Haven after Cary's gorgeous character in the divine "The Philadelphia Story".
I know, right? Cary would appreciate the physical humour-exhibit A, arsenic and old lace. As a former circus performer he’d absolutely *see* Hines’s talent. And I knew someone else had noticed! I searched the comments and here it was. 👍
Gregory Hines was super talented - I was heartbroken when he died. I enjoyed watching him in everything. But the dancing had me enthralled! Just amazing. Where's that kind of talent today? RIP, sir.
Love, love this man! No words to express his UNBELIEVABABLE talent! Continue to be frustrated that most people don't even know who he is, let alone know his MASSIVE contribution to the the arts around the world!!
Never mind how difficult THIS is - I've taken several tap classes and I know how difficult THOSE were. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can dance.
I can hardly walk. That's why I prefer to fly. ;) So, no, even without tap lessons I've an idea how hard it is. To get there. What all classy pros have in common is their capabilities to make their prowess appear easy, or it wouldn't be entertaining and no fun watching it. But just because something looks easy when performed by an expert, doesn't mean it is. It hardly ever is. That's what I always know.
I was blessed to call Gregory a friend. He was so kind to me, with encouraging words and kind praise. I watch this video, and think how lucky I was to have a few brief conversations with him. What an extraordinary talent he was, taken from us all too soon. He’s got to be dancing with the Angels now... and entertaining them all at the Pearly Gates. And what a fitting tribute to Gene Kelly, who was extraordinary as well.
I saw Hines on Broadway in the Eighties. What a remarkable talent he was. An unforgettable evening. Great that the Kennedy Center had one master salute another.
That must have been seeing him in Person! I always enjoyed Betty Hutton, saw her in person I forget where tho! Loved her great energy etc!!Now I keep her alive as I lip sing to her songs! I used to sing with bands but I am 88 now so my voice is gone! I love entertaining at Senior Places!! 💖🙏❤️🥰
It’s difficult to reconcile his prodigious dancing talent with his exceptional singing done back to back without a moment to catch his breath. Respect!
Right after the Great Hines makes his epic finale fall, Cary Grant's reaction is so genuine. "Oh, Wow!" 💜 it! Today's artist need to celebrate each other. If you can't admire your colleagues, you are really not an artist, are you?
@@minekara6407 I became a fan of Gregory Hines when he played the coroner in "Wolfen". He was hilariously funny and lovable. Later I realized that he is also a brilliant dancer. Well, we all know what fate awaited the man. Very sad. He remains a legend.
Gregory the great. He was at his peak. I miss great talent like this. Where did all the song and dance men go? That 's Cary Grant in the audience sitting in front of Walter Mondale, and his reaction is priceless!
I had the pleasure of being Greg's StanIn, on an USA Network miniseries. We had so much fun. Between takes, we would play around singing Temptations Songs, like My Girl. He is an Endearing Spirit who suffered in complete silence until it could not be hidden any more. That's a Trouper. I miss you Greg, and I thank GOD for having a chance to be a small part of your life.
I could not get enough of Gregory Hines. He was the BEST!!! So sad that he died so young. He was cool and sexy and talented and he seemed so comfortable in his own skin. I came on RUclips hoping I could find an interview he did on the Merv Griffin show shortly after Sammy Davis Jr. died. It was so touching and poignant. Couldn't find it, but this performance was certainly a treat.
Always enjoyed Mr. Kelly. The first time I remember seeing Mr. Hines was in the movie "White Nights" (1985) with Mikhail Baryshnikov. He was only 57 when liver cancer took him 8/9/2003. January 28, 2019 the US Postal Service honored Mr. Hines with a postage stamp. A fan from Las Vegas, NV July 12, 2019
He is the ultimate triple threat! But he actually danced AND sang LIVE people! That is not easy to do, not easy at all! And the notes he held and dominated at the end 😲 an amazing man's tribute to an amazing man! 😃

HOW COULD HE SING AFTER THAT ROUTINE. Dance more than well, sing more than well, look more than good... So glad for the upload. Thank you.

Gregory Hines was the perfect person to tribute Gene Kelly both 🐐
Gregory Hines would have been sitting where Gene Kelly was getting his Kennedy Center honor had he lived longer. R.I.P. to both.
So agree.
1000%.
Gone too soon!
Such a tragic loss of wonderful, beautiful talent. RIP Mr. Gregory Hines
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! No doubt about it !!!!!!
It's not just tap dancing, it's like he's scatting with his feet.
Brilliantly put!
Touché
He's the BEST!!!!!!!
That is THE best description I've ever heard of what Gregory Hines does so brilliantly... that I've never seen from anyone else!
HE WAS GREAT, SORRY HAVE LOST HIM SO SOON, RIP MY FRIEND
What kind of shape was he in to dance like that, and then belt out those powerful notes, strongly and clearly, and not even seem winded?!?? Amazing talent!!
When you’re on the stage you don’t feel anything. You just belt it out and then as soon as the lights fade, collapse
Exactly
Good, much less great, dancers are also great athletes.
I've always heard that dancers are the best athletes of all!
