Ty for this, I'm tired of hearing the "Luffy isn't a hero because he denied he was one 500 chapters before" without really analyzing the story. And even I could swear Luffy before Fishman Island has shared (or at least intended to) his food with his friends, so to me his discourse it was more about not having the obligation to do something rather than doing something. Like he's helping people not because it's what he should do but because it's what he wants to do.
To me op always has been about Luffy's (and the reader's) journey, learning and meeting a whole and unjust world with a lot of complexity elements, living experiences that influence his (our) view of said world; like a journey about leaving the ingenuity behind. That's why we dont know about the WG at first, that's why at first the general sensation about the marines were there were "a few bad apples". The same way, Luffy's view on what freedom means evolves because just as some of us, hes realizing you cant be free all by yourself. But probably all this interpretation has to do with my own leftists values (specifically ancom lol). Great video!

Your characterization of Luffy is off. Thing is he DOES seek freedom for himself. Luffy has NEVER went into a kingdom and said "these people are being oppressed and I must fight to free them because thats the right thing to do!" that shit never happens. What happens is usually the villains piss him off so Luffy decides to run the hands with them. Thats it. Freedom is always a side effect of Luffy's existence and never the direct intention to Liberate anybody. With Wano being the sole exception. He's not going out of his way to free anybody unless he becomes personally effected and has no choice. If he really cared about freeing "everybody" he'd be doing what Dragon is doing but thats not Luffy's character.
His sense for freeing people is something he’s developed but he’s always done it
