You can understand Luffy emotions and thoughts through his actions. He rarely gives important speech yet we understand what he wants to say to his enemies.
I agree that Luffy ordering his crew to run was the best decision he could ever make. Being a good leader is knowing when to fight and when to flee. When faced with a threat that is much stronger then you and you know it, running away is the best option for the safety of you and everyone else around you. 2:40 that point about the traits not being inherent to Luffy is so key and overlooked, people really underestimate how impressionable young kids are. And Luffy saw the right thing in the right guy, and had the conviction to decide what would be best for him. This is overlooked so much when it feels like it's just natural for Luffy to be the way he is, but we can see in little panels, one I remember is in Skypiea when he was about to punch Enel and had the bell stretch his arm completely back and you can see his face, in that moment he wants to let go of the bell But immediately he remembers the faces of people for whom he's doing what he's doing, it's so subtle but says a lot, that even he is not this perfect guy who never falters, but someone who's also trying to align himself to his ideal everyday.
To watch my baby so miserable at Sabaody Island, and after that, Ace's death, broke my heart. Luffy is such an unique and amazing character. I love him so much.
The best thing about Luffy is that he never tries to be a hero in the big world. All he wanted is to do whatever he wants and every step he takes is towards that goal
I will say that, contrary to my initial thought, Luffy is an incredibly fun protagonist. Form years and years of just hearing about him and seeing him offhand, I never liked him. But once I started watching the show, his electric attitude really grew on me and had me rooting for him super quick. He’s just simple, a very morally grounded character that never strays from his own views even if it leads to conflict. He will go to the ends of the earth for you, and if you hurt his friends, he will find you and end you.
Just as Dresseosa is a microcosm of the end of one piece, Skypiea is a microcosm of all of one piece. A tyrannical ruler repressing opposing ideals, striking down outbreaks with a bolt from the heavens or wiping the slate clean by nuking the island. Luffy is not only opposed to this but actively fights back with a unique resistance to the great power's ability. Even the fact that the enemy is referred to as a god equates in both cases
Your point, "He gave them the ability to walk in the sun - to escape the darkness." that you mentioned, definitely aged well. I mean, Gear Five and all.
This video was a great discussion of luffy’s character. I liked how you used examples from the early one piece chapters not only effectively but with a different take. Would if I can use your video as reference for an essay I’m writing on luffy

@@HotBoySpicy luffy may be selfish sometimes but hes more times selfless..stop it...also shanks may be a double agent..i don't trust him...he seems like a government dog...another oda plot twist
this video perfectly encapsulates why i get so damn mad when people just write this off to the plot armor or forced plot, when every single small little detail you could possibly ever want is explained piece by piece by the storytelling that oda has done over the years, which is also what impresses me so damn much, like, how it is even humanly possible for a singular person to think up this world, becuase in my opinion, one piece is, across all off fiction, the best story that has ever been told
Great video,a good summary of why i think that Luffy is the best mc a shonen ever had and one of the best mcs in general. He's so simple on a surface level, but it's exactly this that makes him so interesting. His convinctions are extremely strong and he always did everything he could to not let anyone or himself down. What really got me was his love for freedom. It's very hard to put this into words (mostly because i'm not a native english speaker lol),but i will try. One piece is exactly my idea of an infinite adventure, and luffy's love for it almost moves me to tears sometimes. Just look at that scene where rayleigh asked him if he wanted to know where the one piece was. He's opposite to everything else you can expect from the world of one piece, just like you said. I'm not sure if this derivates from some kind of purity that shanks doesn't have (luffy never killed someone),but i'm inclined to think that it's not just that. His love for adventure and freedom isn't something he's obsessed with in a negative kind of way,but it's something he'll gladly share with anyone who wants to. He's pure light in such a corrupted world.
I barely started watching one piece because of my brother, it’s feels like classic shounen anime I would have grown up with (dragon ball, naruto, bleach, etc.) It makes me feel like a kid again, and it’s awesome
Seeing this video and the explanation to luffy just made me realize how much one piece has subconsciously influenced my life and my worldview. What a great analysis !
I don't think he was being that selfish when he punched the CD because he did it to protect Hachu. Just think he was being reckless but it can definitely be seen as inconsiderate to his crew. I think Oda wanted to demonstrate that you can only be reckless when you handle the consequences and Luffy couldn't
That recklessness had consequences for people other than himself whom all relied on him for their safety. It's a selfish decision to not properly sit and think something like that through, but not malicious. It's impulsively selfish, but not evil. It's okay for Luffy to have negative qualities, bc it's human. He can and has learned a lot from the consequences of that.
I actually think Skypia is actually the snipet of all of one piece. 1. It’s the only arc that takes you away from the story 2.it still has a lot that ties back into the story 3. It’s about an island where people live in fear of a self proclaimed god (enel or in the real story Imu) the shandorians are waiting for the day a bell is rung for someone to return(those who know about the will of D and are waiting for the day JoyBoy comes back) 4.the whole Nolan’s story and how someone’s dreams can extend generations (just how the will of D and rogers legacy can extend generations) 5. So much more honestly 6. The final panel foreshore we gear 5 luffy and is odas favorite panel in the story (or was not sure right now)
This is what i tell to people. If there is an arc that you show people to tell them what One Piece is as a whole -- both its strength and flaws, show them Skypiea
God I love this character, and you have such a deep understanding of these characters you talk abt which I honestly wish I had lol. 13:10 I know this is a 3 year old video, but I still felt like commenting on this. You say that Doffy was not born like this, that his environment caused him to gain this anger towards the world. I both agree and disagree. Nobody would argue that Doffy would turn out exactly like he did if he had experienced a different environment, but it is worth pointing out that Rosinante experienced the exact same thing that Doffy did, and turned out how he did, completely different from Doffy. You could argue that the difference between them is still environmental, that Rosinante was raised by a good marine (Sengoku) while Doffy was raised by the worst piece of garbage (Trebol), but I'd still point out that Rosinante turned to tears and sadness over his family's situation, while Doffy turned to anger and hatred, even before they split off to experience different things. Ultimately though, I do agree with your points, this is just a small nitpick. I like this video a lot, subscribed
Luffy doesn't follow many stereotypical traits other male mcs do. That makes him refreshing. He doesn't single women out to protect, nor is he sexually interested in them. He doesn't care about keeping up a strongman facade. He is just kind. And dumb, but in his case that works too.

I watched that episode where he punched vivi in the face recently and I completely forgot about that. It’s kind of shocking really but I guess it makes sense for his character and for that arc.
That's when he became my favourite protagonist in Shounen battle It's something most writers would be afraid of write for their protagonist especially as a serious and not joke moment But Oda really took the risk with confidence in his skills and in return elevated the plot and Luffy himself as a character It really was a striking pun intended impactful moment that woke us up to realise he isn't just a goofy carefree careless brawler At times he can think seriously and be an actual commanding leader who is willing to take the tough calls to ensure success looking at reality with pragmatism
@@tpsam the moment actually came out of left field. There was no build up to that and there was no logic behind that guy having that train thought. And for nothing because none of the main characters actually died. All of Vivi's friends survived the war. Luffy suddenly acting like he knows what it takes to lead a country was actually hilarious.
@@kevintanza6968 luffy was referring to the fact that vivi smh hope 1milli+ people to fight without casualties. Also he wanted vivi to understand that they're (the crew) here to help her as a friend, ready to sacrifice cause at first they agreed to help vivi for the reward ( gold-money) thanks to nami. Vivi was considering the whole thing as a kinda contract even though she had good relation with the crew, luffy basically said : fuck that, I'm fighting for you cause you're a friend/nakama as the ones in the crew.
@@kevintanza6968he didn't act like he knew how to lead a country. He acted like he KNEW NOT EVERYONE COULD BE SAVED. Take it as you see it, but that's the reality. Luffy has seen deaths ever since he was a child, it was not revealed back then but later on we learmed about Grey Terminal and whatnot, in that flashback Luffy showed genuine understanding of the 'people' that lived in Grey terminal and what the fire meant, he looked for Ace for reassurance but Ace quickly brushed it aside, not wanting to talk about the bitter harsh truth of the world. Luffy was optimistic as hell but he'll only do his best for people he ACTUALLY knew and cared. Back in Impel Down, countless inmates either died or put to a coma by Magellan who was chasing after Luffy's group, did you see him stopping and help those people? NO. Because he doesn't care! Vivi's selfishness and naivety is admittedly annoying. She wanted everything but Luffy reminded her simply that she can't have everything. She, being a sheltered princess aged 16, raged and hit Luffy for saying the painful truth just because she wasn't ready to face it. Luffy, being an advocate of equality, punched her back FOR PUNCHING HIM ONLY FOR SAYING THE TRUTH. Yes, Luffy doesn't know what it takes to lead a country, but neither did Vivi. She was a bundle of emotions, aged 16, raised as a sheltered princess, and full of stupid ideations had it not for the strawhats picking her up by fate, she would have died played like a fiddle by Crocodile. She was emotional but it was normal. Luffy even got down to her level and talked calmly with her but she responded badly, which was why Luffy punched her back.
@@tikachaneltikahamidah5851 Well put. Vivi and Luffy have been bouncing against each other regarding the burden of leadership the entire trip. Back in Drum Drum Kingdom Vivi admonished Luffy for not humbling himself to save Nami, so the two have had a dynamic about leading, so when the two get into swinging at each other it hadn't come out of nowhere.
The Charlos incident was not Luffy being wrong. It was him making a judgement call- Is it worth putting it all on the line to save a friend, or to keep his temper and allow her to be sold? He made the right choice, just not the smart one.
I mean... "luffy isnt a hero" being a hero isn't something you declare about yourself. luffy is a hero to hundreds of people in the one peice world and thats all it takes to be a hero
luffy isnt a hero bcs being one comes with responsibility he doesnt want that bcs that responsibility takes away from his freedom. luffy himself says it best "a hero would have to share his meat but i can not do that. i want all of my meat" he doesnt want everyone's responsibility he does what he wants and that freedom is what he craves
luffys perception of the term hero is just misinformed when someone says "their my hero" its really only one action they needed to have done, i think the confusion is between being a hero and being a super hero, luffy is absolutely a hero, but in no way sees himself as someone actively looking for people to save@@saniyaatique6545
Oda writing has so much substance, he does a great job showing the purpose of characters and what they will do the achieve their purpose which is exactly why one piece is my favorite anime , luffy is my favorite character of all time , and Oda is my favorite mangaka
He definitely does not exclusively do the right thing. And the man himself said he's not a hero. He can be a good person and a good leader and an inspiration without being a hero. It's more of a rejection of the expectations put upon a hero, because Luffy wants to freedom to choose what he wants to do in a situation not the expectations put upon him to always do "the right thing". Doing the right thing is also inherently subjective.
Alot of the time luffy is doing something because a friend asked him too Alabasta Vivi Dressrosa Law and Rebecca Wano Momo and kinemon Fishman island Jinbe and shirahoshi Cocoyashi village Nami Syrup village Ussop If none of those people had never asked him he wouldn't have interfered unless it was a yonko
Him punching the celestial dragon....It had to happen. The lesson was not to hold his anger when a friend of his is getting treated like shit and be more radical. It was a reminder to Luffy and the crew that they were still too weak to carry on to the new world with their moral standards and fullfil their big dreams. Therefore, they train to get stronger. Taking on the world just protect his hurt friends no matter what the stakes are is a fundamental part of who Luffy is. It is not something for him to change, but to make up for with his strength. Get it? If you do and notice something I'm missing, please tell me.
12:25 The world took everything from him thus he will take from the world. I know Doflamingo is based on the story of Cervantes Don Quichote de La Mancha. But that line i just quoted from you.. yea,the mindset of DoFlamingo in this story sounds alot like the legend of Cao Cao and his famous quote "I'd rather betray the world than let the world betray me."
I never thought about how Luffy is perfectly fine with being punched around by his own crew. But you make a good point. Just like Shanks, he's not a man who would start a needless fight, so to him it doesn't really matter. If Nami punches him because he spent all the money, he doesn't have a reason to butt back because his leadership style just isn't about that.
Thanks god There is one person who can actually analysis character , seen a lot of fake analysis youtuber like Ohara , who just follow the trend rather than what is true
Wow. I've never seen a sincere character analysis that I so fundamentally disagree with. I feel like you'd say the cherry pie was to die for, and the drink tasted like death. That scene in Jaya where Luffy and BB turn out to be incredibly similar but perfectly opposite at the same time. Punching out Saint Charlos? That wasn't a mistake. That was an inevitability. Right after that, he explicitly apologized to his crew for making a decision like that without consulting them. And they said, in basically as many words, that they knew he would do that, and they supported him absolutely.
My personal issue with that point of the video is that he says it's Luffy disregarding Shanks' lessons. I'd say no. Put Shanks in that position and that's exactly what Shanks would do. You don't fuck with Luffy or Shanks' friends. Straight out.

im ngl i read “beating” and not “betting” at first and was intrigued to hear why we should beat up luffy, then realized halfway through i was wrong lmfaooo
Oda nailed Luffy's simplicity character writing to the point where i think he is a S-tier character. There are a lot of simplistic characters in animanga but none of them come close to how Oda has potrayed it.
The photos that Imu has also are all characters who could considered looking for, or a pusher for freedom - though Blackbeard's idea of freedom is true lawlessness. Vivi stands out more than any other princess of the world kingdoms, and her father too. Shirahoshi has both unconditional kindness like her mother, that was even able to sway a celestial dragon, but also the power of Poseidon. And Luffy, being the embodiment of freedom and his huge influence on those around him. These four are all some of the biggest threats to the WG in the way that they will not follow authority over their morals, and that they will not "behave" in the face of the highest order in the world - even Shanks goes to the Gorosei peacefully. It doesn't matter how physically strong they are, but their influence on others.
11:02 y'know this actually made me think about that, the strawhats have made people "free" ever since captain morgan actually, hell the navy soldiers at the base literally cheered when zoro cut down morgan
I wouldn't even say that hitting saint charlos was wrong...I'd say shanks taught luffy not to fight if there was no stakes much like you said...but hacchi was a friend and so was camie so the stakes were hacchi being killed potentially and camie being sold into slavery...had I the power to stop that from happening even a little I think I'd act as much as I could too....and the celestial dragon deserved it lets be honest here.
Finally watching this. My past idea is coming closer, I have a theory doffy will turn into a chaos/good character based off idealisms, doffy is frieza in this instance
You should listen to aleczandxr they have great analyses and while you were talking about the freedom motif, he already saw the idea by skypiea, and I completely agree I think he inspires all of them just purely by idealogy. This might be spoilers: but the idea of the sun and freedom is clear from the start, and luffy represents that to a T, he shines a light on the unfortunate ones and makes sure they deserve the rights they see
To me, Luffy is incredibly complex but also simple at his core. He’s predictable. Every action he takes is obvious once you reach a certain point in the story. @@OlugbemigaFalegan that's what I disagree with , One Piece themes was complex from the beginning it is about human desires and the different angles of it
for example we thought from the first scene of One Piece that Roger is just a shounen hero , but after some hundred chapters we knew that he is a selfish and obsessed person who destroyed the lives of millions while still being respected as a man who started a revolution
I think we just thought it was simple because we didn't know much about the story
@@wwe12153 yea I get that but I never saw those moments as products of the theme of human desire but as a product’s of that theme being applied in a multitude of different way’s
Does that make sense I never know how I come across on these comments
Super goku is written by an entirely different person who interprets dragon ball differently. Not a fair comparison.
2:40 that point about the traits not being inherent to Luffy is so key and overlooked, people really underestimate how impressionable young kids are. And Luffy saw the right thing in the right guy, and had the conviction to decide what would be best for him.
This is overlooked so much when it feels like it's just natural for Luffy to be the way he is, but we can see in little panels, one I remember is in Skypiea when he was about to punch Enel and had the bell stretch his arm completely back and you can see his face, in that moment he wants to let go of the bell
But immediately he remembers the faces of people for whom he's doing what he's doing, it's so subtle but says a lot, that even he is not this perfect guy who never falters, but someone who's also trying to align himself to his ideal everyday.
He's a chaotic good boy
Don't diss Luffy
Perfect 👌
Everyone joined him willingly...
Luffy: Join my crew!!
Sanji: I refuse.
Luffy: I refuse your refusal!!
Your point, "He gave them the ability to walk in the sun - to escape the darkness." that you mentioned, definitely aged well. I mean, Gear Five and all.
this aged like fine wine
Everyone followed luffy when he was a real Pirate but Zorro followed him when he had nothing but a simple Boat
Luffy saved him from a hail of bullets and preserved his dream While he is tied on a pole with nothing to offer
Naturally he followed him
Everyone who loves one piece needs to watch this video. So good man.
This video was a great discussion of luffy’s character. I liked how you used examples from the early one piece chapters not only effectively but with a different take. Would if I can use your video as reference for an essay I’m writing on luffy
Thanks for watching man! Go ahead and reference it! (make sure to cite though lol). Also, if you like this video, I would urge you to check out my other One Piece analysis videos, personally I think this is my weakest vid on the series. If you want to get a good gauge on some of my more nuanced breakdowns, I'd say go check em out!
@@HotBoySpicy luffy may be selfish sometimes but hes more times selfless..stop it...also shanks may be a double agent..i don't trust him...he seems like a government dog...another oda plot twist
@@razkable that's one hella thing u said there
this video perfectly encapsulates why i get so damn mad when people just write this off to the plot armor or forced plot, when every single small little detail you could possibly ever want is explained piece by piece by the storytelling that oda has done over the years, which is also what impresses me so damn much, like, how it is even humanly possible for a singular person to think up this world, becuase in my opinion, one piece is, across all off fiction, the best story that has ever been told
I LOVE that luffy doesn’t enforce his will on others. Otherwise, he’d just be a hero and he doesn’t want to be one.

It makes me feel like a kid again, and it’s awesome
This video explains why Luffy is THE SUN GOD, the light of all the people trapped into darkness
Seeing this video and the explanation to luffy just made me realize how much one piece has subconsciously influenced my life and my worldview. What a great analysis !
Same with me
"Everyone joined willingly"
Luffy to sanji: "i refuse your refusal"
You do remember that Zoro almost killed that CD right? Even it’s bad this crew would still support these 2 actions even if it got them in trouble.
after watching gear 5 this video makes so much sense he inspires freedom and liberates
good thing you acknowledged morj as an inspiration for this video. That's the best example to follow in the one piece analysis scene
I actually think
Skypia is actually the snipet of all of one piece.
1. It’s the only arc that takes you away from the story
2.it still has a lot that ties back into the story
3. It’s about an island where people live in fear of a self proclaimed god (enel or in the real story Imu) the shandorians are waiting for the day a bell is rung for someone to return(those who know about the will of D and are waiting for the day JoyBoy comes back)
4.the whole Nolan’s story and how someone’s dreams can extend generations (just how the will of D and rogers legacy can extend generations)
5. So much more honestly
6. The final panel foreshore we gear 5 luffy and is odas favorite panel in the story (or was not sure right now)
Can u tell me wich chapter the panel you are talking about is? I only started reading the manga at about 1017
This is what i tell to people. If there is an arc that you show people to tell them what One Piece is as a whole -- both its strength and flaws, show them Skypiea
Sadly it stretches so much that the only way to watch it is One Pace
he represents something so complex and important in such a simple way. thats my goat mc mannnn
God I love this character, and you have such a deep understanding of these characters you talk abt which I honestly wish I had lol. But today’s his birthday, so happy birthday Luffy, and thank you for this analysis. Your videos actually help me a lot with writing my own characters, so keep at it bro ur awesome
Just got around to subscribing, hoping for more One Piece content. Luffy especially deserves a lot of love, plenty of people seem to write off Luffy’s character and his writing as a static protagonist..
When i watch luffy fight i lean back as this Animal starts kicking ass.
Phenomenal essay. You’re writing, kept me engaged the entire time, which I think is way more impressive than content creators that analyze this kind of content typically do. Really appreciate your hard work. Look forward to everything else that you make.

such a well made video
This was an absolute amazing video Here take my Follow my guy you deserve it :)

I'd recommend checking this video out to get my full stance on Doflamingo's phyche.
Luffy doesn't follow many stereotypical traits other male mcs do. That makes him refreshing. He doesn't single women out to protect, nor is he sexually interested in them. He doesn't care about keeping up a strongman facade. He is just kind. And dumb, but in his case that works too.
Dude, you have an amazing voice. You presented this video fantastically. I enjoyed this. Thank you.
Simplicity does not mean shallow, that’s what makes one piece so incredible, the depth of such a simple story
Great analysis, truely. This video deserves more recognition.

I watched that episode where he punched vivi in the face recently and I completely forgot about that. It’s kind of shocking really but I guess it makes sense for his character and for that arc.
That's when he became my favourite protagonist in Shounen battle
It's something most writers would be afraid of write for their protagonist especially as a serious and not joke moment
But Oda really took the risk with confidence in his skills and in return elevated the plot and Luffy himself as a character
It really was a striking pun intended impactful moment that woke us up to realise he isn't just a goofy carefree careless brawler
At times he can think seriously and be an actual commanding leader who is willing to take the tough calls to ensure success looking at reality with pragmatism
TLDR Luffy is like an onion. Therefore Luffy is Shreck.
2:11
Haha! Perfect gif.
The Charlos incident was not Luffy being wrong. It was him making a judgement call- Is it worth putting it all on the line to save a friend, or to keep his temper and allow her to be sold? He made the right choice, just not the smart one.
I mean... "luffy isnt a hero" being a hero isn't something you declare about yourself. luffy is a hero to hundreds of people in the one peice world and thats all it takes to be a hero
luffy isnt a hero bcs being one comes with responsibility he doesnt want that bcs that responsibility takes away from his freedom. luffy himself says it best "a hero would have to share his meat but i can not do that. i want all of my meat" he doesnt want everyone's responsibility he does what he wants and that freedom is what he craves
luffys perception of the term hero is just misinformed when someone says "their my hero" its really only one action they needed to have done, i think the confusion is between being a hero and being a super hero, luffy is absolutely a hero, but in no way sees himself as someone actively looking for people to save@@saniyaatique6545
i envy how you look a character in a lot of different perspective because you are almost right at all your analysis.
Dudes the main character in the most popular manga all time. Based on that alone you should be betting on this dude hello
You ability to analyze material is another level
Oda writing has so much substance, he does a great job showing the purpose of characters and what they will do the achieve their purpose which is exactly why one piece is my favorite anime , luffy is my favorite character of all time , and Oda is my favorite mangaka
This was great🔥
I just discovered your channel this was a great analysis.
Anyone saying Luffy isn’t a hero is lying. Even if he’s selfish, he exclusively does the right thing.
Alot of the time luffy is doing something because a friend asked him too
Alabasta
Vivi
Dressrosa
Law and Rebecca
Wano
Momo and kinemon
Fishman island
Jinbe and shirahoshi
Cocoyashi village
Nami
Syrup village
Ussop
If none of those people had never asked him he wouldn't have interfered unless it was a yonko
The answer is very simple actually. He is honest. He never lies. It’s one of the toughest quality to have. Even when the situation is not in favour.
THE BEST MC EVER .
What i love about luffy is he is not fighting for his own sake his fighting for everyone whos oppressed
All of this could also definitely be used for what Blackbeard doesn't have
Thanks god There is one person who can actually analysis character , seen a lot of fake analysis youtuber like Ohara , who just follow the trend rather than what is true
How is ohara fake lol I'm curious
@@MattGarcyaDC Dude just criticizes one anime for something and then completely ignore if the same happens with one piece
Yea I can appreciate luffys character more then super goku because of the mechanics of the fighting in his world and the value they teach
Love that he randomly calls out another RUclipsr halfway through 😂
I know this video is like 2 years old but you have my favorite analyses on Naruto of anyone, so I thought I should check this out because I just can’t get into OP. Mostly due to the characters, especially Luffy, so here’s hoping you can change my mind

Every other shonen anime does the idiot hero but this is one of those times where it pays off beautifully

You should listen to aleczandxr they have great analyses and while you were talking about the freedom motif, he already saw the idea by skypiea, and I completely agree I think he inspires all of them just purely by idealogy. To me, Luffy is incredibly complex but also simple at his core. He’s predictable. Every action he takes is obvious once you reach a certain point in the story. Dropping this predictable protagonist into an incredibly dark, unpredictable, and twisted world is a stroke of genius. It’s one of the things that makes One Piece great.
