    The one car I loved most was my dad's '01 Golf - smallest engine, no bells and whistles. It was 7 years old when he bought it, it looked and felt like new, the clutch action was just perfect, it never missed a beat, I did some proper off-roading in it, it always used a little less fuel than the trip computer indicated, it could for unknown reasons do a real 10 kph more than advertised, it drove me and 3 of my friends with skiing equipment to the Alps and it did eventually give its life to protect its passengers when its story came to a close in an unfortunate encounter with a pesky soulless SUV.
    Rest in peace old friend, and even when all of your parts will eventually have been melted down to form something new, your magic will still be alive and felt in everything created out of them.
    P.S.: Sorry for that one time where I caused you to have undue contact with a pillar and gave you that weird purplish mark on your front bumper, I should have taken the extra 10 seconds to back you up and make sure to avoid it.

      @@marekj1100 It wasn't an ordinary situation like entering a roundabout or a curve, it was a car invading my lane, you can't just choose not to break, or do the hammering on the brake that everyone says they'd do but somehow whenever something happens they don't. Sometimes the efficiency of your braking can determine the outcome of a risky situation and taking into account reaction time, stress and fear I wouldn't be so stupid again to drive a car without abs. Even if I used it once, cause I'm super good at braking, that time it would have saved my life. And once it saved someone elses life cause a car poked out a crossing with low visibility and wet road and I was like 60 km/h, braked firmly cause I knew I had abs and stopped safely in an astonishing short distance.

      @@BigLiftsITA,
      I remember two incidents when I had to brake as effectively as possible. At both times was I driving a relatively old car with no ABS.
      Last summer I had to brake for a deer stepping into my way. I wasn’t driving very fast through that dale (maybe 50 km/h), but the road was wet. The deer stepped onto it from the growth on the left side, not far from me, maybe at 7-10 metres. Somehow, I pushed on the brake pedal with just the right force, so that the car did not skid one bit, yet it slowed almost to a halt on just a few metres. There was smell of rubber, but no skid.
      And many years ago, I was driving about 60 km/h in an empty lane, passing still traffic in the next two lanes on my right. Some sucker with a briefcase in his hand was making his way across that multilane road, among the still cars. I spotted him maybe at 20 m. Within a fraction of a second, knowing I had no ABS, I pushed with full force on the brake pedal, released, and pushed again with full force. I stopped to a halt within some 10 m, instead of hitting the sucker.
      I’m not saying every driver can do this. Somehow, I can, without consciously thinking about it.

    i got my driving license on last Thursday, and my grandpa gave me his 18 years old suzuki swift 1,0 (he already had some problem to turn on his right or left to see any car coming on the road). In my country there are plenty of them, and you can get one in normal shape around 275 pounds. They aren't the fastest, the biggest, and it's not a life insurance to travel with one (we call it paper car) but in exchange they use 5l/100 km. Even so i really love to drive it, and i try to give all the things what a normal car can get to be (almost) perfect.
    I just want to say that, if you drive these cars with a little patience, and try to do the very basic maintance, you can save them for those people who can't afford an expensive car.
    That's all what i wanted. Good driving and wide roads to all.

I still have it and it never ever broke down. Its actually in the same condition as i bought it. I treat it with respect and dont drive it fast so it will probably last for like 10 years more.

      If you have to floor it to go anywhere, there isn't much point in treating said car with care. Avoid pot holes so you don't rip a wheel off. Don't crash it into anything purposely. But at the end of the day, a 1.8L 2000 Corolla has less than 100hp, gets 24mpg, and drinks more oil than a rotary!(about 1L oil every 350-400miles). Uses the same gallons per hour of gas whether you're sitting still or driving at 90mph, but that is a 3 speed automatic car for you. engine drone is so loud you need to wear earplugs going over 74mph. and i'm just going with the flow of traffic, which regularly exceeds 100mph around Chicago.

    • @CockatooDude
      @CockatooDude 7 лет назад +1

      I think your corolla has a few issues with it. I used to have a 95 corolla, and the engine loudness wasn't bad at all in it, and it didn't drink oil at all.

      CockatooDude in 2016 the airflow sensor has had to be replaced 3 times, the transmission had to be replaced (twice because the mechanic screwed up the first time, but my dad got a 1month warranty in writing on the repair job, so it didn't cost us any extra), brake lines had to be replaced, and I think there was something else but I can't remember it right now. I don't think I'd ever buy a Toyota after all the trouble with this one. Hopefully it won't cause too much trouble this year.

Whether it's a 70 plate Merc or a 99 plate fiesta a cat converter is a cat converter and will need replacing if you use low grade fuels all the time. I've learnt that with my cheap peugeot 207 I only use the good stuff because I want it to last

      I do agree. I drive an 06 Seat Ibiza. It looks very rough on the outside. I don't care if it gets dinged further when it's parked but I do want to keep it running for a long time so I avoid super market fuels. I use Esso 95 or Shell Fuel save and my car is happy with it. When I used Morrisons fuel, my car was chugging very bad when it was idling and sound louder.

I hope I can own it so that I will keep the car in one piece instead of sending it to the car abattoir.

    Couldn't agree more. We own a simple Ford Ka. It's battered and when we got it we had to spend £100 quid on an engine. We thought it was bad because it struggled to speed but now it seems to get more powerful every time we drive it even though it's only a 1 litre engine and finally going through country lanes is the best thing to do. Roll down the window and listen to what sounds like a rally stage.

  • @joninfiction
    @joninfiction 7 лет назад +407

    I disagree with some of this. A cheap car can't take you places you wouldn't normally go. There is a fear of the car breaking down in the middle of nowhere without any way of communicating with others. Not to mention having to pay for a towing fee.

    • @fatfuckhatesyou
      @fatfuckhatesyou 7 лет назад +62

      Not a problem if you have basic repair skills.
      If you have an old car you quickly find out what problems it might have, keep spare parts and tools with you.
      I drove my 300 dollar Volvo from the north of Sweden all through Europe and into southern Italy. And back through Norway and home. . Replaced a few fan belts, re-attached the exhaust system with some zip ties and a few other things. No problems.

    • @joninfiction
      @joninfiction 7 лет назад +15

      Not everybody has money, basic repair skills, or tools/spare parts with them. Some people actually are forced to buy cheap cars cuz it's all they can afford. Not to mention barely afford to keep maintenance on said car. Here's an example. My wife and i are driving a used car that was sold by someone in a town over. 2,000$. We now have a leaking valve cover. I don't own any tools(even if i did, the apartment complex my wife and I live at do not allow residents to work on cars in the parking lot).

    • @fatfuckhatesyou
      @fatfuckhatesyou 7 лет назад +28

      Well that sucks for you. I would never live in such a place and not owning any tools? Not an option for me. Working on cars is fun. I service my cars completely. Takes almost zero skills. If you can drive a car you can fix a car.

    • @joninfiction
      @joninfiction 7 лет назад +9

      It does suck. I'm not happy to be here. But it's also out of my hands. like i've mentioned earlier. Everyone's situation is different. We kinda have no other place to live. And for the not owning tools thing. It goes along with why we live here. We don't make enough money to move, get tools, afford better things, not even enough to save. Part of the fun you have while working on cars is a huge part of why you agree with this video and are saying the things you are. Some people just aren't as fortunate as others.

    Treat the cheap cars nice too! They deserve just as much love as an expensive car, if not more. Cheap older cars have character and soul more so than a new car that just rolled off the lot. If you take good care of your cheap car, it'll take good care of you too.
