The Voyager crew was clearly impressed by the design and said so. They also downloaded the schematics to Voyager's computer. Starfleet was wise not to let that knowledge go to waste.
The episode it featured was also key to Borg lore. The Borg came in force to Arturis' world likely due to the development of slipstream as it negates the real advantage the Borg have in war, that of transwarp. Meaning they can pick and choose when and where a fight happens and with whom, while also having their entire logistical base safely out of reach of their enemies. And then Endgame gave us the final piece, the Borg play with their food. They could have wiped out the Federation at any point through a Transwarp conduit a light year from Earth but haven’t. The first time they attacked Earth they didn’t succeed in taking a target they had identified worthy of assimilation (unlike say the Kazon), but they got the Federation to invent ablative armor, quantum torpedoes, bioneural gel packs and so on in response. New toys to assimilate. Clearly the Borg were intending to milk further advancements until the well ran dry or the Federation actually succeeded in developing a real threat to the Borg, a transwarp drive. And then they’d come in force. Not appearing on the edges of Federation space giving time to mount a defense, and not appearing with a single cube, but the dozens we saw.

I kind wish ST:Ent had been in production when that episode aired...because in retrospect the NX-01-A registry number should've been a _huuuge_ red flag to the Voyager crew just by itself. It's such an oddity, especially when Starfleet usually keeps registry numbers and names perma-linked when they start adding letters to the end of 'em (obviously the NX-01 Enterprise pair didn't last, but still...). And then there's the fact that Starfleet had long since started used 5-digit registry numbers...even on it's prototypes...
It's not impossible that the first Federation Starfleet vessel was named the USS Dauntless, a nice announcement that Starfleet and the Federation have no fear after their victory over the Romulans. The NX-01 Enterprise was retired and put in the new fleet museum after the Earth-Romulan War, and a new Enterprise didn't appear for another 84 years.
Thing that gets me though is the size. The original 'fake' Dauntless was less than 200m in length and only had 7 decks (making it a bit larger than the Defiant-class), but the 'real' Dauntless dwarfs the Protostar which itself is roughly the same size as the 'fake' Dauntless. Smaller ships always made more sense to me when utilizing untested technology and engineering, with the notable exception of the Excelsior and its transwarp drive. (although even the Excelsior seems small compared to modern ships)
I fully believe the starfleet dauntless was designed by a team powered by spite. (SFDebris Janeway Voice) "Trick us with a fake starfleet ship will you? Well we'll make a better one, with neon lights, and it'll be *bigger.* "
To be fair, the original Dauntless was supposed to be a one-way revenge tool. When Starfleet got the schematics, they probably realized that it wasn't big enough to accommodate all of the stuff needed for it to actually do the kinds of missions most starships do. The Defiant's a rather special case since those ships are geared almost exclusively around combat, whereas the vast majority of Starfleet's ships are much more multirole.
When reverse engendering tech starting with replicating a known working design is smart as when you get the replication down perfectly you can start to branch out into using the tech in other designs

The Dauntless we saw on “Voyager” was a pretty and elegant design. The Dauntless from “Prodigy” is as weird looking as it is ugly. But I guess it works.
I feel like the major issue with it is keeping the nacelles underslung. If they'd been mounted above the engineering section, you would get what looks like a giant _Nova_ class.
Yes but I think this is mostly the intent of the show. This is Starfleet’s first attempt at rebuilding the class. The most sophisticated tech on it is the drive itself which Starfleet may not have the materials or methods at hand to perfectly copy. So they built it as close to the original design as possible. Dauntless on a budget? Yes. With further experimentation and tinkering it may come more in line with the original. Hell if that Battle of Procyon V scene from Enterprise is anything to go one they do in fact perfect the design.

In a video about the Hawking Class by Triangulum Audio Studioes, he theorised that a more (for the lack of a better term) Aerodynamic hull design would improve Quantum Slipstream Speeds and decrease instability. This could be one of the reasons for the Alien Dauntless and Remade Dauntless designs as well as "partially" explain why the drive was unstable when used by Voyager
I kinda love the new version of the voyager taking inspiration from the Dauntless. The Pathfinder ship frame remains true to the original Voyager, but its color scheme is much more organic and original. Truly, makes me feel proud. Starfleet was indeed wise not to let that knowledge of the Dauntless and its designs go to waste.
Good video. Thank you for creating & sharing it. The subject of Starfleet vessel design integrating new, alien technologies over time is interesting. I haven’t seen Prodigy but an additional or supplemental explanation for this vessel is that perhaps as Starfleet returned to the Delta quadrant after VOY they encountered more examples of species 116 and their ships. Starfleet could have, in time, gotten their hands on an actual space frame and retro engineered a Dauntless from that…in addition to Voyagers knowledge base and experience.
You will see one in a blink and miss it scene when they were aboard The Enterprise J on Star Trek Enterprise, during that battle being watched through the window
Starfleet built the Dauntless because they could. Arturus needed the NX01A Dauntless to look, feel and taste Starfleet. It needed to have everything work in a way that an engineer like Torres could take it apart and say “Yeah I know this.” From the way the ships hull was mounted to its frame to the crystals in the phasers to the Font used on the menus. It had to be starfleet. As such Starfleet SCE basically had a blueprint on a QSD ship. Because to convince Voyager that his trap was real he had to reverse engineer a federation starship.
It was a syops created by section 31. Better for them to believe it was a hostile alien trick to maintain secrecy. But at least section 31 had the morale to give them a clue on how to build quantum slipstream technology.
It bears saying that there is a notable difference between QSD drivers VOY first encountered and the version they reversed engineered: V1 QS drive = max speed 300 LY's per hour (sustainable cruising speed of about 29.76 Ly's per hour) - this version onboard the fake Dauntless didn't use Antimatter and there was no mention of dilithium crystals - nor did it use Benemite crystals either. VOY could only use V1 of QS for 1 hour before its hull became compromised due to Quantum stresses in slipstream (arguably an easier problem to solve since the technology was easily modified to work with VOY's existing system - all SF would really need to do is come up with a way to reinforce the SIF to better withstand Quantum stresses, and/or possibly limit the use of the drive to emergencies to cut through larger distances in very small amount of time). V2 QS drive = maximum speed of 10,000 Ly's per minute (incorporated use of Borg technology, created a Quantum Matrix for the core, and use Benemite crystals which had a high ratio of decay). This second version had no issues with quantum stresses on the hull, however there was a phase variance in the Quantum core which manifested itself 17 seconds into the flight (from Timeless) and the benemite crystals decayed rather fast (but this can be overcome by timing production of Benemite crystals since VOY established they can be synthesized - but the process at the time was slow - there's no reason to think this couldn't be overcome with some R&D and of course since Starfleet did have access to Dilithium recrystalisation technology in the 24th century, there's no reason to think why this technology couldn't be applied to Benemite crystals - even in a limited fashion at first - all in all, the challenges aren't insurmountable, and they could be dealt with relatively quickly even with automated R&D via the computer). Since the VOY crew worked on the fake Dauntless for days, they became intimately familiar with its systems and had detailed scans of it as well... that's why they wanted to replicate the design and make it their own so they can do more work on further perfecting the Slipstream probably (which they have done by the time the Dauntless was built by Starfleet after VOY got back home). Disco successfully ignored most of the stuff from the 23rd and 24th century... had it not, the Burn would never have happened.
Move the warp nacelles under the arrow head then get rid of the aft section and you have a ship that looks kinda like the Romulan remote control ship from the NX -01 alternate timeline.
Arcturus's species were *brilliant idiots.* They had Quantum Slipstream Drives that could get past the Borg, yet didn't decide to _just do a runner._ They could have moved a significant segment of their population to far beyond the Borgs reach. Their species were well suited for exploration in a crowded galaxy, with high intelligence and their amazing language and code breaking abilities. Then add in super strength and so much resilience that they can take multiple phaser hits. If such a species was in Federation space even without their advanced tech they would be important and powerful. Just imagine how far Humans could have gotten if 'they' had their capabilities, they are at almost Augment levels (except for Dex). And this is just from observing one individual. Was Arcturus a top athlete and genius linguist, or middle of the road on the Bell Curve?
@@RandyBaumery-s4i Yes indeed. In the Voyager episode that QSD was introduced that went 15 light years in a minute or so but was hoping for more specific specs.
What if Homeboy died and Voyager's crew NEVER found out that the Dauntless WASN'T real? Would Voyager be left adrift in the Delta blah-blah-blah? Don't forget, "I think we built an Edsel, Harry."
hey rick 😌 wonderful video! (I watch most of your videos religiously by the way 😂) If I may enquire about the following: you always have these wonderful ship schematics in your videos. Do you create them yourself? They are so awesome!
An interesting ship. Alas, I can not say it's one I like. The side profile and rear does not have a look I care for. The hood on the back of the saucer and the way the nacelles sit near one another below the rest of the ship in particular. It actually doesn't look too bad from the front.
You can tell a lot of people out there aren't engineers if they don't know why they copied, or at least attempted to copy the original Dauntless. Essentually they reversed engineered the ship, just copied every system as best they could with their technology and then tested it to see how it works. It's actually extremely common, especially in the 50 years. So it makes since Starfleet would do this, especially given that starfleet was probably looking for faster ships.
This really makes me question the effects of "The Burn" from Discovery even more. If the Federation was already starting to implement it on starships by the early 25th century, then why would it not have taken over as starfleet's main method of FTL by the 32nd century, from the way it is described it it doesn't require dilithium to work so it should have been perfectly usable post burn...
So did the Borg gain quantum slipstream tech when they assimilated the fake Dauntless? Too bad Prodigy isn't on Paramount Plus anymore. Or getting a second season.
When talking about FTL, it always interesting , sort of. That Star Trek acutally comesi n dead last whn ti comse to FTL speeds in most Sci fi comparisons. always did like stargate most.
Starfleet should have early on in the 25th century built a fleet of Burst QSD _pure combat ships_ as a quick reaction force to use in and near Federation space. Any problems and some battlewagons just appear in minutes instead of hours to days. And they are carrying enough firepower and armour to make Sisko's pimp hand blush.
I didn’t like the way that the rest of the Dauntless saucer section looked, in Prodigy. Compared to the “fake” Dauntless design, I just find the whole back-end of Admiral Janeway’s Dauntless really off-putting. Something about Starfleet ship designers in the 2380’s just seemed to be totally…. I’m not even sure there’s a word to do it justice 🤷🏼 They seemed to just flip out and throw almost anything into their designs. I feel kinda the same about the California class.
@@patrickschulz2193 That much I can accept. How they’ve done similar things for Admiral Janeway’s Dauntless, however…. Just feels wrong. Seems like they didn’t consult Sternbach on it at all. Definitely much prefer the Protostar’s design.
If I remember correctly when Voyager found the fake Dauntless, it would have taken about 40 years at max warp for Voyager to get home, but the Dauntless could do the same in about 6 months. This might not apply though to Starfleet's slipstream drive as we have never gotten a canon answer to how fast it is that I know of.
@@stevengalloway8052 I was wrong. The fake Dauntless could travel 60,000 light years in about 3 months. That would take Voyager about 55 years at max warp, but it's still unknow about Starfleet's slipstream drive
Hey with modern 3D printing tech, you can download instruments, weapons, and vehicles. Who's to say 24c tech wouldn't let you download the blueprints and fabrication info for a whole starship?
Are we sure the Dauntless that fought at Proceyon 5 was of Starfleet origins? A species that fell to the Borg because of Starfleet meddling seems like it would be a good candidate for a pawn of the Sphere Builders.
It makes no sense for a spacecraft be aerodynamic or be sculptured which makes manufacturing more expensive. As a result the Constitution Class is my favorite. Its design makes sense based on the physics it employs. The saucer section makes sense for deploying a large field artificial gravity. The two nacelles makes sense for generating a warp field like how antenna elements work. The secondary hull makes sense for housing the source of power and beams a deflector to push things away in its path. At its speeds no matter how shaped the hull is if a particle can reach the hull it will punch right through it. So it makes no sense to make spacecraft look aerodynamic.
I thought they were making ships more streamlined to avoid damage to subspace. Also, we don't know exactly how travelling at quantum slipstream speeds affects the ship, or everything around it.
@@UnChannelDuVulpineX the shape of something so tiny in the scheme of light speed makes no sense. A good example of what makes sense is the Borg ship.

Arcturus's species were *brilliant idiots.* They had Quantum Slipstream Drives that could get past the Borg, yet didn't decide to _just do a runner._
They could have moved a significant segment of their population to far beyond the Borgs reach.
Great video as usual. Is there a table that shows Warp Speed vs Quantum Slipstream?
Warp is fast. Quantum slipstream is incredibly fast! 😅
@@RandyBaumery-s4i Yes indeed. In the Voyager episode that QSD was introduced that went 15 light years in a minute or so but was hoping for more specific specs.
For us Evil Janeway theorists...I wonder if the white stripe in her hair that makes her look like Emet-Selch is merely a coincidence or not...
What if Homeboy died and Voyager's crew NEVER found out that the Dauntless WASN'T real? Would Voyager be left adrift in the Delta blah-blah-blah?
Don't forget, "I think we built an Edsel, Harry."
hey rick 😌 wonderful video! (I watch most of your videos religiously by the way 😂)
If I may enquire about the following: you always have these wonderful ship schematics in your videos. Do you create them yourself? They are so awesome!
I loved this ship when I first saw it on Voyager even though it was FAKE😄
An interesting ship. Alas, I can not say it's one I like. The side profile and rear does not have a look I care for. The hood on the back of the saucer and the way the nacelles sit near one another below the rest of the ship in particular.
It actually doesn't look too bad from the front.
It isn't a one-off in Star trek Online. I, as well as other players, have a dauntless class science ship from the Delta Quadrant pack.
The partical synthesis could have also been the basis for the armored ablation armor
and yet 800 years later they just kinda forget slipstream exists
I prefer the aesthetics of the "Voyager" version of the Dauntless over the "Prodigy" version every day of the week.
Fake ship or not, I actually liked the design. Not sure what it's role would be, but it was cool for a hot-rod ship.
I did a video on this happenstance as well. I love this design
Why wouldn't they copy it?
I could see a limited production run and used for quick response actions
@5:37 which ship are we seeing there?
The Aventine I believe. Vesta class commanded by Ezra Dax in novels
Pathfinder class, recently introduced into canon with a picture of the Voyager-B in 2401
@@CertifiablyIngame oops. Nice looking ship, even though it’s not what I thought it was.
Maybe it had some long term consequences in between that Star fleet didn't forsee or Disco S 3 onwards is in a Different timeline alltogether.
He deserves his revenge. Janeway is partially responsible for everything the Borg do after the alliance.
Yeah, but she also pretty much wiped them out. If he'd succeeded in his revenge, the Borg would still be ravaging the entire galaxy.
I want the Protostar in STO!
I really like this odd ball design better than the rather ugly looking voyager A seen in prodigy season two.
Like the lore, love the original Dauntless, hate the recreation of it sadly.
So did the Borg gain quantum slipstream tech when they assimilated the fake Dauntless?
Too bad Prodigy isn't on Paramount Plus anymore. Or getting a second season.
Second season is still in production last I heard, looking for a new home.
@@patrickschulz2193 I see...
When talking about FTL, it always interesting , sort of. That Star Trek acutally comesi n dead last whn ti comse to FTL speeds in most Sci fi comparisons.
always did like stargate most.
Well with dw i think that galaxy is smaller
Still won't do a video on the Magellan Class, huh?
To be fair, the kitbash-y design if the California class is a deliberate design choice.
@@patrickschulz2193 That much I can accept. How they’ve done similar things for Admiral Janeway’s Dauntless, however…. Just feels wrong. Seems like they didn’t consult Sternbach on it at all. Definitely much prefer the Protostar’s design.
interesting!
🤔 How much faster is slipstream than warp? 🤨
@@minebuilder1230 - Okay, thanks... 👍
@@stevengalloway8052 I was wrong. The fake Dauntless could travel 60,000 light years in about 3 months. That would take Voyager about 55 years at max warp, but it's still unknow about Starfleet's slipstream drive
Hello captain Rik
You wouldn't download a starship...
Hey with modern 3D printing tech, you can download instruments, weapons, and vehicles. Who's to say 24c tech wouldn't let you download the blueprints and fabrication info for a whole starship?
lazy Federation scientists and engineers: let's copy and stamp Federation copyright on it
🖖
Would the Quantum Slipstream Drive been immune from the effects of The Burn in ST:Discovery?
It was mentioned by Booker, but apparently it wasn't practical since apparently benemite was even more rare than dilithium at that point.
This ship would have been cooler if the nacelle pylons were… there. Other than that its dope

Are we sure the Dauntless that fought at Proceyon 5 was of Starfleet origins?
A species that fell to the Borg because of Starfleet meddling seems like it would be a good candidate for a pawn of the Sphere Builders.
oh.. A "fan" made ship that was so good it became canon... where I had heard of that...
@@UnChannelDuVulpineX btw, in the world of hypersonics, blunt is better than sharp.
@@M3e36-99 Didnt 7 explain at one point that they basically generate a cone shaped forcefield in front of them during transwarp..?
@@BL33NB yes the cone shape force field likely has to extend a light year. Hence the shape of your hull don't matter.

I was surprised that anyone in the Gamma Quadrant [DELTA. dernit. lol thanks @vegeta002 for calling me out for getting my quadrants crossed, returning my VOY fan badge] ... found out about Janeway's little Borg alliance. It was definitely something important to hush up as Top Secret.
I'm not; it's Voyager. Their version of *"Top Secret"* is probably a flashing banner at the top of the page saying "Captain's Eyes Only: Please do not read further."
Also, wrong quadrant. Gamma is the Dominion, Voyager is Delta.
