  • Patrons voted for this song almost a year ago, and it's been sitting in my backlog for quite some time... and I'm ashamed to say it. I'm familiar with her work, as my parents used to listen to her growing up, but I've never heard her perform live in a setting like this.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she Alison Krauss and Union Station for the first time, performing "Baby Now That I've Found You".

A few weeks after my wife passed away in 2012 I found an iPod in her gym bag. I charged it and listed to the music she had downloaded on to it, and one of the songs was Alison Krauss’s “Ghost in This House”. I had never heard her before and this song resonated with me on many levels. It was both sad and yet soothing. I’ve been a big fan of her music ever since.

I’m sorry for your loss. Sometimes a song can be a special place to go and just hide for awhile. The group Shenandoah recorded this song as well, written by Hugh Prestwood. Just hearing AK sing the lyrics gives this song a quality only her unique voice can achieve. I started listening to her 38 years ago and 29 Grammys later I enjoy her body of work more now than ever. My best to you and your family.

I saw her at a local club right after her 3rd album had just released, and before Dan Tyminski had joined. I have witnessed her velvety voice many times over the past 20+ years. She is about to tour again with AKUS for the time in 10 years, and without Dan. There are so many songs worth a listen, so it would be hard to pick just one. She did "Baby of Mine" from Dumbo that's beautiful, and anything from the live album (featured here) would be an excellent choice. Her last album with AKUS, "Paper Airplane," is gorgeous. My wife and I saw her at an outdoor venue we love in Cary, NC, and their encore was breathtaking. They did maybe 4 songs or more around one microphone, under a full moon near a lake, so the scenery certainly helped. They finished with "Down to the River to Pray." I will stop now, but I can't say enough good things about Alison. ❤❤❤

Thank you for this analysis. I completely agree with your assessment as to how beautiful her voice is. So many magnificent performances from her, though the ones I always think of are ones that combine her with other artists. "Go Rest High on That Mountain" with Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs is tear-inducing, both lyrically and musically. Her performance of "The Wexford Carol" with Yo-Yo Ma is one of my favorite performances, ever. The notes she just leaves out are analogous with "ghost notes" in jazz. The notes are implied rather than played/sung.
While there aren't many voices like her's, someone that comes close is a protégé of her's, Sierra Hull. Beautiful, clear as a bell voice. Alison produced Sierra's first album when Sierra was 14. Sierra is a mandolin player, and probably the finest mando player of her generation.
The gentleman who's playing you commented on is Jerry Douglas. The instrument is a resonator guitar, though more commonly called a dobro, which is actually a brand name of an early maker. Jerry is a brilliant artist in his own right, playing bluegrass, country, and jazz.
