Last year was the first in which Tua stayed healthy through an entire season. Miami should guarantee the market rate and then stick with performance based pay from there. Is Tua worth a boatload of guaranteed money? No, not so far. But Grier chose him over Herbert so he's got to double down now.
Tua is a solid QB. Not great, not transcendent and thus far not a big game player. Don't give me numbers because every QB puts up numbers in the pinball age of offense- from Mac Jones to Cousins to Daniel Jones. I want a QB who steps up in big moments the way Stafford did a couple years back when he took out the Bucs in that playoff game. After the Rams blew a 27-0 lead in Tampa, LA didn't just run out the clock and take it to OT, nope. After Stafford had thrown a pick six on the previous series, he calmly stepped back and threw a bomb to Cooper Kupp that led to the W. THAT pass is what separates guys like Mahomes, Burrow and Stafford from guys like Tua, Cousins and Dak. Because Stafford had that throw in him. Because numbers are all well and good but that ring on Stafford's finger counts the most.
Tua is gonna get paid. But he best have that in him or jobs will be lost to this.

I don’t know why that’s so hard for people to understand. The QB position is actually one of the least likely to be career ending type of injuries. Along with kickers and punters. QBs are more likely to be held out of games from minor injuries because of the overall investment and risk of making a bad situation worse due to the nature of the position having to stand in the pocket while massive men are trying to kill you. I watched it for years with Marino. During the regular season, he would make people look stupid. But when you’re in the playoffs, everyone needs to step up when everything’s on the line. Mahomes is phenomenal, but he has one of the best coaches of all time. He has a great staff and a great game plan for every situation. McDaniel is just learning. Put it in the right situationand he’ll make the throw. The one playoff game that Tua was in an impossible situation. He has come through in big games in the regular season. He keeps getting better every season. Grier being cheap is the reason this hasn’t been done. So Mr. GM who do you got to replace him? Like it or not we have not had a good system quarterback since Marino. Go ahead and say that QB one is not the guy. But you better have an answer that is actually plausible. Miami won't be in a position to draft a top QB next year, or the year after that. They have too good of a team right now they aren't going to be able to tank. Even if they could draft a top QB within the next couple years, the history of the NFL is that most QBs coming out of the draft are either busts or low performers. It's rare for a QB to be solid. So they'd be dumping a solid QB that they have right now, for the chance at a QB who will likely NOT be solid based on history. And again, that's assuming that they could somehow tank the season which would majorly piss off every top tier veteran on the team who is trying to win a Super Bowl right now. You think Tyreek Hill is going to want to stick around if the Dolphins say "Hey buddy, I know we told you we were going to try and get you a SB ring, but we decided to screw over Tua for some reason so now you're gonna have to wait for us to rebuild for the next 3 years." This has nothing to do with the browns. This is all about the agents that run the sport. Players should make what they deserve but every mediocre quarter under the sun is trying to “reset the market”. No QB should be making more than Pat Mahomes.

I like Tua but everyone else getting contract extensions have better abilities. Please remember how Tua was during the Flores years. Not great. And Skylar Thompson did well in the same system against Buffalo. So yes, I'm skeptical that Tua is a $50MM+ per year QB.

The thing about Tua is if we switch teams for Tua and Lawrence I don’t think he has any where the same success in Jacksonville that Lawrence has had. I can easily see Lawrence having more success in Miami than Tua.

This is completely meaningless speculation. Trevor Lawrence isn't available. There is no reality in which Trevor Lawrence "switches teams" and Tua plays in Jacksonville. Here's the reality we live in. Tua is the Dolphins QB. He has played better every year he has been in the league. He has outplayed both T Lawrence and Justin Herbert in every meaningful measure of success, except for the single playoff game where T Lawrence BEAT Justin Herbert. Those guys are both now being paid over 50 Million. There is no other QB available at or above Tua's level, so there is no "other guy" who is going to be slotted in.
The Dolphins have 2 options. Lock Tua in now for current market rates, or try to screw him over for some reason (again, there's no upside to that because there are no other QBs available at that level), and if/when he has another solid season and possibly has a deep playoff run, then you have to pay him millions more than what you'd pay him now.

@@codyfox2876 I agree from a Miami fan perspective the reality that y’all live in. I’m speaking to over the top hate that Lawrence gets for being in a bad situation.
Tue is a good QB in one of the best situations a QB has ever been. From the HC, weapons, to the defense. All around this is a SB caliber team.
Lawrence is a better QB who has done a lot with a little: Urban Meyer at the start of his career, mid weapons, and a horrible defense, and still almost went back to back AFC South champions before his injuries last year.
I don’t think Tua has the same success as Lawrence if he was drafted in Jacksonville, but he is all you have and that price just went up.

I do think Lawrence has received unfair hate from some people who just want to declare his entire draft class a bust, but he hasn't gotten nearly the amount of hate that Tua has gotten. There are a number of TV analysts who hate Tua BECAUSE he is doing well. They predicted he would be a bust and so when he does well it makes them look bad.
